If you wish to be perfect, go and sell what you own.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 19:16-22

There was a man who came to Jesus and asked, ‘Master, what good deed must I do to possess eternal life?’ Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you ask me about what is good? There is one alone who is good. But if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.’ He said, ‘Which?’ ‘These:’ Jesus replied ‘You must not kill. You must not commit adultery. You must not bring false witness. Honour your father and mother, and: you must love your neighbour as yourself.’ The young man said to him, ‘I have kept all these. What more do I need to do?’ Jesus said, ‘If you wish to be perfect, go and sell what you own and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.’ But when the young man heard these words he went away sad, for he was a man of great wealth.

  ‘and see what becomes of them.

For they are a deceitful brood,

  children with no loyalty in them.

‘They have roused me to jealousy with what is no god,

  they have angered me with their beings of nothing;

I, then, will rouse them to jealousy with what is no people,

  I will anger them with an empty-headed nation.’

The Lord will profane his sanctuary.

A Reading from the Book of Ezekiel 24: 15-24.

The word of the Lord was addressed to me as follows, ‘Son of man, I am about to deprive you suddenly of the delight of your eyes. But you are not to lament, not to weep, not to let your tears run down. Groan in silence, do not go into mourning for the dead, knot your turban round your head, put your sandals on your feet, do not cover your beard, do not eat common bread.’ I told this to the people in the morning, and my wife died in the evening, and the next morning I did as I had been ordered.

  The people then said to me, ‘Are you not going to explain what meaning these actions have for us?’

  I replied, ‘The word of the Lord has been addressed to me as follows, “Say to the House of Israel: The Lord says this. I am about to profane my sanctuary, the pride of your strength, the delight of your eyes, the passion of your souls. Those of your sons and daughters whom you have left behind will fall by the sword. And you are to do as I have done; you must not cover your beards or eat common bread; you must keep your turbans on your heads and your sandals on your feet; you must not lament or weep. You shall waste away owing to your sins and groan among yourselves. Ezekiel is to be a sign for you. You are to do just as he has done. And when this happens, you will learn that I am the Lord.”’

அக்காலத்தில்

செல்வரான இளைஞர் ஒருவர் இயேசுவிடம் வந்து, “போதகரே, நிலைவாழ்வைப் பெற்றுக்கொள்வதற்கு நான் என்ன நன்மை செய்ய வேண்டும்?” என்று கேட்டார். இயேசு அவரிடம், “நன்மையைப் பற்றி என்னை ஏன் கேட்கிறீர்? நல்லவர் ஒருவரே. நீர் வாழ்வடைய விரும்பினால் கட்டளைகளைக் கடைப்பிடியும்” என்றார்.

அவர், “எவற்றை?” என்று கேட்டார். இயேசு, “கொலை செய்யாதே; விபசாரம் செய்யாதே; களவு செய்யாதே; பொய்ச் சான்று சொல்லாதே; தாய் தந்தையை மதித்து நட. மேலும், உன்மீது நீ அன்பு கூர்வதுபோல் உனக்கு அடுத்திருப்பவர் மீதும் அன்பு கூர்வாயாக” என்று கூறினார்.

அந்த இளைஞர் அவரிடம், “இவை அனைத்தையும் நான் கடைப்பிடித்து வந்துள்ளேன். இன்னும் என்னிடம் குறைபடுவது என்ன?” என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு இயேசு, “நிறைவுள்ளவராக விரும்பினால் நீர் போய், உம் உடைமைகளை விற்று ஏழைகளுக்குக் கொடும். அப்பொழுது விண்ணகத்தில் நீர் செல்வராய் இருப்பீர். பின்பு வந்து என்னைப் பின்பற்றும்” என்றார்.

அவர் சொன்னதைக் கேட்ட அந்த இளைஞர் வருத்தத்தோடு சென்றுவிட்டார். ஏனெனில் அவருக்கு ஏராளமான சொத்து இருந்தது.

ஆண்டவரின் வாக்கு எனக்கு அருளப்பட்டது: “மானிடா! உன் கண்களுக்கு இன்பம் தருவதை உன்னிடமிருந்து ஒரே நொடியில் எடுத்துவிடப் போகிறேன். ஆனால் நீ புலம்பவோ, அழவோ, கண்ணீர் சிந்தவோ கூடாது. மெதுவாய்ப் பெருமூச்சு விடு! இறந்தோர்க்காய்ப் புலம்பாதே! உன் தலைப்பாகையைக் கட்டிக்கொள்! காலில் மிதியடியை அணிந்துகொள்! உன் வாயை மூடிக்கொள்ளாதே! இழவு கொண்டாடு வோரின் உணவை உண்ணாதே!"

நான் மக்களிடம் காலையில் உரையாடினேன். மாலையில் என் மனைவி இறந்துவிட்டாள். மறுநாள் காலையில் ஆண்டவர் கட்டளையிட்டதைச் செய்தேன். அப்போது மக்கள் என்னிடம், ‘நீர் செய்வதன் பொருள் என்னவென்று எங்களுக்குச் சொல்ல மாட்டீரோ?’ என்று கேட்டனர்.

எனவே, நான் அவர்களுக்குச் சொன்னது: ‘ஆண்டவரின் வாக்கு எனக்கு அருளப்பட்டது: இஸ்ரயேல் வீட்டாருக்குச் சொல்: தலைவராகிய ஆண்டவர் கூறுவது இதுவே: உங்கள் வலிமையின் பெருமையும், கண்களின் இன்பமும், இதயத்தின் விருப்பமுமாகிய என் தூயகத்தை நான் தீட்டுப்படுத்துவேன்; நீங்கள் விட்டுச் சென்ற ஆண் மக்களும் பெண் மக்களும் வாளால் மடிவர். நான் செய்ததுபோல் நீங்களும் செய்வீர்கள்; நீங்களும் உங்கள் வாயை மூடிக்கொள்ள மாட்டீர்கள்; இழவு கொண்டாடுவோரின் உணவை உண்ணவும் மாட்டீர்கள். தலைப்பாகையை உங்கள் தலையில் வைத்திருப்பீர்கள். கால்களில் மிதியடிகள் இருக்கும். நீங்கள் புலம்பவோ அழவோ மாட்டீர்கள். ஆனால் உங்கள் குற்றப்பழி குறித்துத் தளர்வுற்று உங்களிடையே புலம்பிக் கொள்வீர்கள். இவ்வாறு எசேக்கியேல் உங்களுக்கு ஓர் அடையாளமாய் இருப்பான். அவன் செய்ததுபோல் நீங்களும் செய்வீர்கள். இவை நடக்கையில் நானே தலைவராகிய ஆண்டவர் என அறிந்துகொள்வீர்கள்.
