A Reading From The Holy Gospel According To Luke (16, 19-31) 

At that time, Jesus said to the Pharisees, “There was a rich man, clothed in purple and fine linen, who made sumptuous feasts every day. Before his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, who was covered with ulcers. He would have liked to be satisfied with what fell from the rich man's table; but the dogs came to lick his ulcers. But the poor man died, and the angels took him to Abraham. The rich man also died, and they buried him.

In Hades he was a prey to torture; looking up, he saw Abraham from a distance and Lazarus close to him. Then he cried out: “Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water to cool my tongue, for I am suffering terribly in this furnace. - My child, answered Abraham, remember: you received happiness during your life, and Lazarus, misfortune during his. Now he finds consolation here, and you suffering. And on top of all this, a great chasm has been established between you and us, so that those who would like to pass to you cannot, and so that, from there, no one will cross to us either. ” The rich man replied: “Well! father, I beg you to send Lazarus to my father's house. Respons: Happy is the man who puts his faith in the Lord. 

Psalm 1 

Happy is the man who does not enter into the council of the wicked,

who does not follow the path of sinners,

does not sit with those who sneer,

but delights in the law of the Lord

and murmurs his law day and night! R 

He is like a tree planted by a stream,

which bears fruit in due time,

and its leaves never die;

whatever he does will be successful.

This is not the fate of the wicked. R 

But they're like windswept straw.

The Lord knows the way of the righteous,

but the way of the wicked will be lost. R

"Cursed be the man who puts his faith in a mortal. Blessed be the man who puts his faith in the Lord ” 

Reading from the book of the prophet Jeremiah (17, 5-10) 

Thus says the Lord: Cursed be the man who puts his faith in a mortal, who leans on a being of flesh, while his heart turns away from the Lord. He will be like a bush on a desolate land, he will not see happiness coming. His home will be the arid places of the desert, a salty, uninhabitable land.

Blessed is the man who puts his faith in the Lord, whose trust the Lord is. He will be like a tree, planted near the waters, which grows its roots towards the current. It does not fear when the heat comes: its foliage remains green. In the year of the drought, it is without worry: it does not fail to bear fruit.

Nothing is more false than the heart of man, it is incurable. Who can know him? I, the Lord, who penetrates the hearts and scrutinizes the loins, in order to render to each one according to his conduct, according to the fruit of his deeds.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு எருசலேமை நோக்கிச் செல்லும் வழியில் பன்னிரு சீடரையும் தனியே அழைத்து, “இப்பொழுது நாம் எருசலேமுக்குச் செல்கிறோம். மானிடமகன் தலைமைக் குருக்களிடமும், மறைநூல் அறிஞர்களிடமும் ஒப்புவிக்கப்படுவார். அவர்கள் அவருக்கு மரண தண்டனை விதிப்பார்கள். அவர்கள் அவரை ஏளனம் செய்து, சாட்டையால் அடித்து, சிலுவையில் அறையும்படி பிற இனத்தவரிடம் ஒப்புவிப்பார்கள். ஆனால் அவர் மூன்றாம் நாள் உயிருடன் எழுப்பப்படுவார்” என்று அவர்களிடம் கூறினார்.

பின்பு செபதேயுவின் மனைவி தம் மக்களோடு ஒரு வேண்டுகோள் விடுக்குமாறு இயேசுவிடம் வந்து பணிந்து நின்றார். “உமக்கு என்ன வேண்டும்?” என்று இயேசு அவரிடம் கேட்டார். அவர், “நீர் ஆட்சி புரியும்போது என் மக்களாகிய இவர்கள் இருவருள் ஒருவன் உமது அரியணையின் வலப்புறமும் இன்னொருவன் இடப்புறமும் அமரச் செய்யும்” என்று வேண்டினார். அதற்கு இயேசு, “நீங்கள் என்ன கேட்கிறீர்கள் என உங்களுக்குத் தெரியவில்லை. நான் குடிக்கப்போகும் துன்பக் கிண்ணத்தில் உங்களால் குடிக்க இயலுமா?” என்று கேட்டார். அவர்கள் “எங்களால் இயலும்” என்றார்கள். அவர் அவர்களை நோக்கி, “ஆம், என் கிண்ணத்தில் நீங்கள் குடிப்பீர்கள். ஆனால் என் வலப்புறத்திலும் இடப்புறத்திலும் அமரும்படி அருளுவதோ எனது செயல் அல்ல; மாறாக அவ்விடங்களை என் தந்தை யாருக்கு ஏற்பாடு செய்திருக்கிறாரோ அவர்களுக்கே அவை அருளப்படும்” என்றார்.

இதைக் கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்த பத்துப்பேரும் அச்சகோதரர் இருவர்மீதும் கோபங் கொண்டனர். இயேசு அவர்களை வரவழைத்து, “பிற இனத்தவரின் தலைவர்கள் மக்களை அடக்கி ஆளுகிறார்கள். உயர்குடிமக்கள் அவர்கள்மீது தங்கள் அதிகாரத்தைக் காட்டுகிறார்கள்; இதை நீங்கள் அறிவீர்கள். உங்களிடையே அப்படி இருக்கக்கூடாது. உங்களுள் பெரியவராக இருக்க விரும்புகிறவர் உங்கள் தொண்டராய் இருக்கட்டும். உங்களுள் முதன்மையானவராக இருக்க விரும்புகிறவர் உங்களுக்குப் பணியாளராக இருக்கட்டும்.

இவ்வாறே மானிடமகனும் தொண்டு ஏற்பதற்கு அல்ல, தொண்டு ஆற்றுவதற்கும் பலருடைய மீட்புக்கு ஈடாகத் தம் உயிரைக் கொடுப்பதற்கும் வந்தார்” என்று கூறினார்.
