Every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are proclaiming the death of the Lord

A reading from the first letter of St.Paul to the Corinthians 11: 23-26 

This is what I received from the Lord, and in turn passed on to you: that on the same night that he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread, and thanked God for it and broke it, and he said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this as a memorial of me.’ In the same way he took the cup after supper, and said, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Whenever you drink it, do this as a memorial of me.’ Until the Lord comes, therefore, every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are proclaiming his death.

அக்காலத்தில்

யோவானின் சீடர் இயேசுவிடம் வந்து, “நாங்களும் பரிசேயரும் அதிகமாக நோன்பு இருக்க, உம்முடைய சீடர்கள் ஏன் நோன்பு இருப்பதில்லை?” என்றனர். அதற்கு இயேசு அவர்களை நோக்கி, “மணமகன் தங்களோடு இருக்கும்வரை மணவிருந்தினர்கள் துக்கம் கொண்டாட முடியுமா? மணமகன் அவர்களை விட்டுப் பிரியவேண்டிய காலம் வரும். அப்பொழுது அவர்களும் நோன்பு இருப்பார்கள்.

மேலும் எவரும் பழைய ஆடையில் புதிய துணியை ஒட்டுப் போடுவதில்லை. ஏனெனில் அந்த ஒட்டு ஆடையைக் கிழித்துவிடும்; கிழிசலும் பெரிதாகும். அதுபோலப் பழைய தோற்பைகளில் புதிய திராட்சை மதுவை ஊற்றி வைப்பதில்லை. ஊற்றி வைத்தால் தோற்பைகள் வெடிக்கும்; மதுவும் சிந்திப்போகும்; தோற்பைகளும் பாழாகும். புதிய மதுவைப் புதிய தோற்பைகளில்தான் ஊற்றி வைப்பர். அப்போது இரண்டும் வீணாய்ப் போகா” என்றார்.

தொடக்க நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் 27: 1-5, 15-29

ஈசாக்கு முதிர்ந்த வயதை அடைந்தபோது அவர் கண்களின் பார்வை மங்கிப்போயிற்று. அவர் தம் மூத்த மகன் ஏசாவை அழைத்து, ‘என் மகனே’ என்றார்; ஏசா, ‘இதோ வந்து விட்டேன்’ என்றான். அவர் அவனை நோக்கி, “இதோ பார்; எனக்கு வயதாகிவிட்டது. சாவு எந்நாள் வருமோ என்று அறியேன். இப்பொழுது உன் கருவிகளான வில்லையும் அம்புக் கூட்டையும் எடுத்துக்கொள். காட்டுக்குப் போ. வேட்டையாடி, எனக்கு வேட்டைக் கறி கொண்டுவா. நான் விரும்பும் முறையில் சுவையான உணவு வகைகளைச் சமைத்து என்னிடம் கொண்டு வா. நான் அவற்றை உண்பேன். நான் சாகுமுன், உனக்கு மனமார ஆசி வழங்குவேன்” என்றார்.

ஈசாக்கு தம் மகன் ஏசாவிடம் பேசியதை ரெபேக்கா கேட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்தார். வேட்டையாடி வேட்டைக்கறி கொண்டு வருமாறு ஏசா காட்டிற்குப் புறப்பட்டவுடன் ரெபேக்கா தம்முடன் வீட்டில் வைத்திருந்த தம் மூத்த மகன் ஏசாவின் உடைகளில் சிறந்தவற்றைத் தம் இளைய மகன் யாக்கோபுக்கு உடுத்துவித்தார். அவன் கைகளையும் மிருதுவான கழுத்தையும் வெள்ளாட்டுக் குட்டிகளின் தோலால் மூடினார். அவர் சுவையான உணவு வகைகளையும், தாம் சுட்ட அப்பங்களையும் தம் மகன் யாக்கோபின் கையில் கொடுத்தார்.

அவனும் அவற்றைத் தன் தந்தையிடம் எடுத்துச்சென்று, ‘அப்பா’ என்று அழைத்தான். அவரும் மறுமொழியாக, ‘ஆம் மகனே, நீ எந்த மகன்?’ என்று கேட்க, யாக்கோபு தன் தந்தையிடம், “நான்தான் உங்கள் தலைப்பேறான ஏசா. நீங்கள் சொன்னவாறு செய்திருக்கிறேன். எழுந்து உட்கார்ந்து என் வேட்டைப் பதார்த்தங்களை உண்டு மனமார எனக்கு ஆசி வழங்குங்கள்” என்றான். ஈசாக்கு தன் மகனை நோக்கி, “மகனே! இது உனக்கு இவ்வளவு விரைவில் எப்படி அகப்பட்டது?” என்று கேட்க, அவன், “உம் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரால்தான் எனக்கு இது நிகழ்ந்தது,” என்றான்.

ஈசாக்கு யாக்கோபிடம், “மகனே, அருகில் வா, நீ உண்மையிலேயே என் மகன் ஏசாதானா என்று நான் உன்னைத் தடவிப் பார்த்துத் தெரிந்துகொள்வேன்” என்றார். யாக்கோபு தன் தந்தை அருகில் வந்தான். ஈசாக்கு அவனைத் தடவிப் பார்த்து, ‘குரல் யாக்கோபின் குரல்; ஆனால் கைகளோ ஏசாவின் கைகள்’ என்றார். அவன் கைகள் அவன் சகோதரன் ஏசாவின் கைகளைப் போல் உரோமம் அடர்ந்தவையாய் இருந்ததால், அவனை அடையாளம் கண்டுகொள்ளவில்லை. எனவே அவனுக்கு ஆசி வழங்கினார். மீண்டும் அவர் ‘நீ உண்மையிலேயே என் மகன் ஏசாதானா?’ என்று வினவ, அவனும் ‘ஆம்’ என்றான்.

அப்பொழுது அவர், ‘மகனே, உண்பதற்கு வேட்டைப் பதார்த்தங்களைக் கொண்டு வா. மனமார நான் உனக்கு ஆசி வழங்குவேன்’ என்றார். அவ்வாறே யாக்கோபு கொண்டுவர, அவர் அதை உண்டார். பின், அவன் திராட்சை ரசம் கொண்டுவர, அவர் அதைக் குடித்தார். அப்பொழுது அவன் தந்தை ஈசாக்கு அவனை நோக்கி, ‘மகனே, அருகில் வந்து என்னை முத்தமிடு’ என்றார். அவனும் அருகில் போய் அவரை முத்தமிட, ஈசாக்கு அவன் அணிந்திருந்த ஆடைகளின் நறுமணத்தை முகர்ந்து ஆசி வழங்கி உரைத்தது இதுவே:

“இதோ, என் மகனிடமிருந்து எழும்பும் நறுமணம்! ஆண்டவரின் ஆசிபெற்ற விளை நிலத்தின் வாசனையாம்! வானின் பனித் துளியும், மண்ணின் செழுமையும், மிகுந்த தானியமும், திராட்சை இரசமும் கடவுள் உனக்கு வழங்குவாராக! நாடுகள் உனக்குப் பணி புரிந்திடுக! மக்கள் உனக்குப் பணிந்திடுக! உன்றன் சோதரர்க்குத் தலைவன் நீ ஆகிடுவாய்! உன் அன்னையின் மைந்தர் உன்னடி பணிந்திடுவர்! உன்னைச் சபிப்பார் சாபம் பெறுக! உன்னை வாழ்த்துவார் வளமுற வாழ்க!” என்று ஆசி வழங்கினார்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 9:14-17 

John’s disciples came to him and said, ‘Why is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not?’ Jesus replied, ‘Surely the bridegroom’s attendants would never think of mourning as long as the bridegroom is still with them? But the time will come for the bridegroom to be taken away from them, and then they will fast. No one puts a piece of unshrunken cloth on to an old cloak, because the patch pulls away from the cloak and the tear gets worse. Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; if they do, the skins burst, the wine runs out, and the skins are lost. No; they put new wine into fresh skins and both are preserved.’

Jacob obtains Isaac's blessing by fraud

A Reading from the book of Genesis 27: 1-5,15-29 

Isaac had grown old, and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see. He summoned his elder son Esau. ‘My son!’ he said to him, and the latter answered, ‘I am here.’ Then he said, ‘See, I am old and do not know when I may die. Now take your weapons, your quiver and bow; go out into the country and hunt me some game. Make me the kind of savoury I like and bring it to me, so that I may eat, and give you my blessing before I die.’

  Rebekah happened to be listening while Isaac was talking to his son Esau. So when Esau went into the country to hunt game for his father, Rebekah took her elder son Esau’s best clothes, which she had in the house, and dressed her younger son Jacob in them, covering his arms and the smooth part of his neck with the skins of the kids. Then she handed the savoury and the bread she had made to her son Jacob.

  He presented himself before his father and said, ‘Father.’ ‘I am here;’ was the reply ‘who are you, my son?’ Jacob said to his father, ‘I am Esau your first-born; I have done as you told me. Please get up and take your place and eat the game I have brought and then give me your blessing.’ Isaac said to his son, ‘How quickly you found it, my son!’ ‘It was the Lord your God’ he answered ‘who put it in my path.’ Isaac said to Jacob, ‘Come here, then, and let me touch you, my son, to know if you are my son Esau or not.’ Jacob came close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, ‘The voice is Jacob’s voice but the arms are the arms of Esau!’ He did not recognise him, for his arms were hairy like his brother Esau’s, and so he blessed him. He said, ‘Are you really my son Esau?’ And he replied, ‘I am.’ Isaac said, ‘Bring it here that I may eat the game my son has brought, and so may give you my blessing.’ He brought it to him and he ate; he offered him wine, and he drank. His father Isaac said to him, ‘Come closer, and kiss me, my son.’ He went closer and kissed his father, who smelled the smell of his clothes.

  He blessed him, saying:

‘Yes, the smell of my son

is like the smell of a fertile field blessed by the Lord.

May God give you

dew from heaven,

and the richness of the earth,

abundance of grain and wine!

May nations serve you

and peoples bow down before you!

Be master of your brothers;

may the sons of your mother bow down before you!

Cursed be he who curses you;

blessed be he who blesses you!’
