At that time: Jesus told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

A reading from the second letter of St.Paul to Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18

Beloved: I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, Which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. At my first defence no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Sirach 35:15b-17, 20–22a

The Lord is the judge, and with him is no partiality. He will not show partiality in the case of a poor man; and he will listen to the prayer of one who is wronged. He will not ignore the supplication of the orphan or the widow when she pours out her story. He whose service is pleasing to the Lord will be accepted, and his prayer will reach to the clouds. The prayer of the humble pierces the clouds, and he will not be consoled until it reaches the Lord; he will not desist until the Most High visits him and does justice for the righteous and executes judgment.

அக்காலத்தில்

தாங்கள் நேர்மையானவர் என்று நம்பி மற்றவர்களை இகழ்ந்து ஒதுக்கும் சிலரைப் பார்த்து இயேசு இந்த உவமையைச் சொன்னார்: “இருவர் இறைவனிடம் வேண்டக் கோவிலுக்குச் சென்றனர். ஒருவர் பரிசேயர், மற்றவர் வரிதண்டுபவர்.

பரிசேயர் நின்றுகொண்டு, இவ்வாறு இறைவனிடம் வேண்டினார்: ‘கடவுளே, நான் கொள்ளையர், நேர்மையற்றோர், விபசாரர் போன்ற மற்ற மக்களைப் போலவோ இந்த வரிதண்டுபவரைப் போலவோ இல்லாதது பற்றி உமக்கு நன்றி செலுத்துகிறேன்; வாரத்தில் இரு முறை நோன்பு இருக் கிறேன்; என் வருவாயில் எல்லாம் பத்திலொரு பங்கைக் கொடுக்கிறேன்.’ ஆனால் வரிதண்டுபவர் தொலையில் நின்றுகொண்டு, வானத்தை அண்ணாந்து பார்க்கக்கூடத் துணியாமல் தம் மார்பில் அடித்துக் கொண்டு, ‘கடவுளே, பாவியாகிய என்மீது இரங்கியருளும்’ என்றார். “

இயேசு, “பரிசேயர் அல்ல, வரிதண்டுபவரே கடவுளுக்கு ஏற்புடையவராகி வீடு திரும்பினார். ஏனெனில் தம்மைத் தாமே உயர்த்துவோர் தாழ்த்தப் பெறுவர்; தம்மைத் தாமே தாழ்த்துவோர் உயர்த்தப் பெறுவர் என நான் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்” என்றார்.

அன்பிற்குரியவரே,

நான் இப்போதே என்னைப் பலியாகப் படைக்கிறேன். நான் பிரிந்து செல்லவேண்டிய நேரம் வந்துவிட்டது. நான் நல்லதொரு போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டேன். என் ஓட்டத்தை முடித்துவிட்டேன். விசுவாசத்தைக் காத்துக்கொண்டேன். இனி எனக்கென வைக்கப்பட்டிருப்பது நேரிய வாழ்வுக்கான வெற்றி வாகையே. அதை இறுதி நாளில் ஆண்டவர் எனக்குத் தருவார்; நீதியான அந்த நடுவர் எனக்கு மட்டுமல்ல, அவர் தோன்றுவார் என விரும்பிக் காத்திருக்கும் அனைவருக்குமே தருவார்.

நான் முதன்முறை வழக்காடியபோது எவரும் என் பக்கம் இருக்கவில்லை; எல்லாரும் என்னை விட்டு அகன்றனர். அக்குற்றம் அவர்களைச் சாராதிருப்பதாக. நான் அறிவித்த செய்தி நிறைவுற்று, அனைத்து நாட்டவரும் அதனைக் கேட்க வேண்டுமென்று ஆண்டவர் என் பக்கம் நின்று எனக்கு வலுவூட்டினார்; சிங்கத்தின் வாயிலிருந்தும் என்னை விடுவித்தார்.

தீங்கு அனைத்திலிருந்தும் அவர் என்னை விடுவித்துத் தம் விண்ணரசில் சேர்த்து எனக்கு மீட்பளிப்பார். அவருக்கே என்றென்றும் மாட்சி உரித்தாகுக! ஆமென்.

ஆண்டவர் நடுவராய் இருக்கிறார்; அவரிடம் ஒருதலைச் சார்பு என்பதே கிடையாது. அவர் ஏழைகளுக்கு எதிராய் எவரையும் ஒருதலைச் சார்பாய் ஏற்கமாட்டார்; தீங்கிழைக்கப்பட்டோரின் மன்றாட்டைக் கேட்பார். கைவிடப்பட்டோரின் வேண்டுதலைப் புறக்கணியார். தம்மிடம் முறையிடும் கைம்பெண்களைக் கைவிடார்.

ஆண்டவரின் விருப்பத்திற்கு ஏற்றவாறு பணிசெய்வோர் ஏற்றுக் கொள்ளப்படுவர். அவர்களுடைய மன்றாட்டு முகில்களை எட்டும். தங்களைத் தாழ்த்துவோரின் வேண்டுதல் முகில்களை ஊடுருவிச் செல்லும்; அது ஆண்டவரை அடையும்வரை அவர்கள் ஆறுதல் அடைவதில்லை. உன்னத இறைவன் சந்திக்க வரும்வரை அவர்கள் நற்பயிற்சியில் தளர்ச்சியடைவதில்லை; அவர் நீதிமான்களுக்குத் தீர்ப்பு வழங்குகிறார்; தம் தீர்ப்பைச் செயல்படுத்துகிறார்.
