மக்கள் கூட்டத்தோடு இயேசு பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்தபோது அவருடைய தாயும் சகோதரர்களும் வந்து அவருடன் பேச வேண்டும் என்று வெளியே நின்றுகொண்டிருந்தார்கள். ஒருவர் இயேசுவை நோக்கி, “அதோ, உம் தாயும் சகோதரர்களும் உம்மோடு பேச வேண்டும் என்று வெளியே நின்றுகொண்டிருக்கின்றார்கள்” என்றார்.

அவர், இதைத் தம்மிடம் கூறியவரைப் பார்த்து, “என் தாய் யார்? என் சகோதரர்கள் யார்?” என்று கேட்டார். பின் தம் சீடர் பக்கம் கையை நீட்டி, “என் தாயும் சகோதரர்களும் இவர்களே. விண்ணகத்திலுள்ள என் தந்தையின் திருவுளத்தை நிறைவேற்றுபவரே என் சகோதரரும் சகோதரியும் தாயும் ஆவார்” என்றார்.

யூதாவும் அவருடைய சகோதரர்களும், “நம் பகைவர்கள் முறியடிக்கப் பட்டார்கள். இப்போது நாம் புறப்பட்டுப் போய் திருஉறைவிடத்தைத் தூய்மைப்படுத்தி மீண்டும் கடவுளுக்கு உரித்தாக்குவோம்” என்றார்கள். எனவே படைவீரர்கள் எல்லாரும் சேர்ந்து சீயோன் மலைக்கு ஏறிச் சென்றார்கள்.

நூற்று நாற்பத்தெட்டாம் ஆண்டு கிஸ்லேவு மாதமாகிய ஒன்பதாம் மாதம் இருபத்தைந்தாம் நாள் விடியற்காலையில் அவர்கள் எழுந்திருந்து, தாங்கள் எழுப்பியிருந்த புதிய எரிபலி பீடத்தின்மீது திருச்சட்டப்படி பலி ஒப்புக்கொடுத்தார்கள். வேற்றினத்தார் பலிபீடத்தைத் தீட்டுப்படுத்தியிருந்த அதே காலத்தில் அதே நாளில் அது மீண்டும் அர்ப்பணிக்கப்பட்டது. அப்பொழுது பாடல்களும் நரம்பிசைக் கருவிகளும் யாழ்களும் கைத்தாளங்களும் முழங்கின.

எல்லா மக்களும் குப்புற விழுந்து தங்களுக்கு வெற்றி அளித்த விண்ணக இறைவனை வழிபட்டு வாழ்த்தினார்கள்; பலிபீட அர்ப்பணிப்பு விழாவை எட்டு நாள் கொண்டாடி மகிழ்ச்சியோடு எரிபலிகளைச் செலுத்தினார்கள்; நல்லுறவுப் பலியும் நன்றிப் படையலும் ஒப்புக்கொடுத்தார்கள்; பொன் முடிகளாலும் குமிழ்களாலும் கோவிலின் முகப்பை அணி செய்து, வாயில்களையும் அறைகளையும் புதுப்பித்துக் கதவுகளை மாட்டினார்கள்.

A reading from the first book of Maccabees 4:36-37,52-59 

In those days: Judas and his brothers said, “Behold, our enemies are crushed; let us go up to cleanse the sanctuary and dedicate it.” So all the army assembled and they went up to Mount Sion. Early in the morning on the twenty-fifth day of the ninth month, which is the month of Chislev, in the one hundred and forty-eighth year, they rose and offered sacrifice, as the law directs, on the new altar of whole burnt offering that they had built. At the very season and on the very day that the Gentiles had profaned it, it was dedicated with songs and harps and lutes and cymbals. All the people fell on their faces and worshipped and blessed heaven, who had prospered them. So they celebrated the dedication of the altar for eight days and offered whole burnt offerings with gladness; they offered a sacrifice of deliverance and praise. They decorated the front of the temple with golden crowns and small shields; they restored the gates and the chambers for the priests and furnished them with doors. There was very great gladness among the people, and the reproach of the Gentiles was removed. Then Judas and his brothers and all the assembly of Israel determined that every year at that season the days of the dedication of the altar should be observed with gladness and joy for eight days, beginning with the twenty-fifth day of the month of Chislev.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு எருசலேம் நகரை நெருங்கி வந்ததும் கோவிலைப் பார்த்து அழுதார். “இந்த நாளிலாவது அமைதிக்குரிய வழியை நீ அறிந்திருக்கக் கூடாதா? ஆனால் இப்போது அது உன் கண்களுக்கு மறைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

ஒரு காலம் வரும். அப்போது உன் பகைவர்கள் உன்னைச் சுற்றி அரண் எழுப்பி, உன்னை முற்றுகையிடுவார்கள்; உன்னையும் உன்னிடத்திலுள்ள உன் மக்களையும் எப்பக்கத்திலுமிருந்து நெருக்கி அழித்து உன்னைத் தரைமட்டமாக்குவார்கள்; மேலும் உன்னிடம் கற்கள் ஒன்றின்மீது ஒன்று இராதபடி செய்வார்கள். ஏனெனில் கடவுள் உன்னைத் தேடி வந்த காலத்தை நீ அறிந்து கொள்ளவில்லை” என்றார்.

அந்நாள்களில்

கடவுளைப் புறக்கணிக்குமாறு யூதர்களைக் கட்டாயப்படுத்துவதற்காக மன்னன் ஏற்படுத்திய அலுவலர்கள், மக்களைப் பலிசெலுத்த வைக்கும்படி மோதயின் நகருக்குச் சென்றார்கள். இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களுள் பலர் அவர்களிடம் போய்ச் சேர்ந்தனர். மத்தத்தியாவும் அவருடைய மைந்தர்களும் தனியே கூடிவந்தார்கள்.

மன்னனின் அலுவலர்கள் மத்தத்தியாவை நோக்கி, “நீர் இந்த நகரத்தில் மதிப்பிற்குரிய பெருந்தலைவர். உம் மைந்தர்கள், சகோதரர்களுடைய ஆதரவு உமக்கு உண்டு. ஆதலால் இப்பொழுது நீர் முன்வாரும்; பிற இனத்தார், யூதேயா நாட்டு மக்கள், எருசலேமில் எஞ்சியிருப்போர் ஆகிய அனைவரும் செய்தவண்ணம் நீரும் மன்னரின் கட்டளையை நிறைவேற்றும். அப்படியானால் நீரும் உம் மைந்தர்களும் மன்னரின் நண்பர்கள் ஆவீர்கள்; பொன், வெள்ளிமற்றும் பல்வேறு பரிசுகளால் சிறப்பிக்கப் பெறுவீர்கள்” என்று கூறினார்கள்.

அதற்கு மறுமொழியாக மத்தத்தியா உரத்த குரலில், “மன்னரின் ஆளுகைக்கு உட்பட்ட எல்லா மக்களினத்தாரும் அவருக்குக் கீழ்ப்படிந்து, தங்கள் மூதாதையரின் வழிபாட்டு முறைகளைக் கைவிட்டு, அவருடைய கட்டளைகளை நிறைவேற்ற இசைந்தாலும், நானும் என் மைந்தர்களும் சகோதரர்களும் எங்கள் மூதாதையரின் உடன்படிக்கையின்படியே நடப்போம். திருச்சட்டத்தையும் அதன் விதிமுறைகளையும் நாங்கள் கைவிட்டுவிடுவதைக் கடவுள் தடுத்தருள்வாராக! மன்னரின் கட்டளைகளுக்குக் கீழ்ப்படிய மாட்டோம்; எங்கள் வழிபாட்டு முறைகளினின்று சிறிதும் பிறழ மாட்டோம்” என்று கூறினார்.

மத்தத்தியா இச்சொற்களைக் கூறி முடித்ததும், மன்னரின் கட்டளைப்படி மோதயின் நகரத்துப் பீடத்தின் மேல் பலியிட யூதன் ஒருவன் எல்லாருக்கும் முன்பாக வந்தான். மத்தத்தியா அதைப் பார்த்ததும் திருச்சட்டத்தின்பால் கொண்ட பேரார்வத்தால் உள்ளம் கொதித்தெழுந்தார்; முறையாகச் சினத்தை வெளிக்காட்டி அவன்மீது பாய்ந்து பலிபீடத்தின்மீதே அவனைக் கொன்றார். அதே நேரத்தில், பலியிடும்படி மக்களை வற்புறுத்திய மன்னனின் அலுவலனைக் கொன்று பலிபீடத்தையும் இடித்துத் தள்ளினார். இவ்வாறு சாலூவின் மகன் சிம்ரிக்குப் பினகாசு செய்ததுபோல், திருச்சட்டத்தின்பால் தாம் கொண்டிருந்த பேரார்வத்தை மத்தத்தியா வெளிப்படுத்தினார்.

பின்னர் மத்தத்தியா நகரெங்கும் சென்று, “திருச்சட்டத்தின்பால் பேரார்வமும் உடன்படிக்கை மீது பற்றுறுதியும் கொண்ட எல்லாரும் என் பின்னால் வரட்டும்” என்று உரத்த குரலில் கத்தினார். அவரும் அவருடைய மைந்தர்களும் நகரில் இருந்த தங்கள் உடைமைகளையெல்லாம் விட்டுவிட்டு மலைகளுக்குத் தப்பியோடினார்கள்.

அப்போது நீதி நேர்மையைத் தேடிய பலர் பாலைநிலத்தில் தங்கி வாழச் சென்றனர்.

At that time: When Jesus drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade round you and surround you and hem you in on every side and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

A reading from the first book of Maccabees 2: 15-29 

In those days: The king’s officers who were enforcing the apostasy came to the city of Modein to make them offer sacrifice. Many from Israel came to them; and Mattathias and his sons were assembled. Then the king’s officers spoke to Mattathias as follows: “You are a leader, honoured and great in this city, and supported by sons and brothers. Now be the first to come and do what the king commands, as all the Gentiles and the men of Judah and those who are left in Jerusalem have done.

Then you and your sons will be numbered among the friends of the king, and you and your sons will be honoured with silver and gold and many gifts.” But Mattathias answered and said in a loud voice: “Even if all the nations which live under the rule of the king obey him and have chosen to do his commandments, departing each one from the religion of his fathers, yet I and my sons and my brothers will live by the covenant of our fathers. Far be it from us to desert the law and the ordinances.

We will not obey the king’s words by turning aside from our religion to the right hand or to the left.” When he had finished speaking these words, a Jew came forward in the sight of all to offer sacrifice upon the altar in Modein, according to the king’s command. When Mattathias saw it, he burned with zeal and his heart was stirred. He gave vent to righteous anger;

he ran and slaughtered him upon the altar. At the same time he killed the king’s officer who was forcing them to sacrifice, and he tore down the altar. Thus he burned with zeal for the law, as Phinehas did against Zimri son of Salom. Then Mattathias cried out in the city with a loud voice, saying: “Let everyone who is zealous for the law and supports the covenant come out with me!” And he and his sons fled to the hills and left all that they had in the city. Then many who were seeking righteousness and justice went down to the wilderness to dwell there.
