Ruth gives birth to Obed, the grandfather of David.

Ruth 2:1-3,8-11,4:13-17. 

Naomi had a kinsman on her husband’s side, well-to-do and of Elimelech’s clan. His name was Boaz.

  Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi, ‘Let me go into the fields and glean among the ears of corn in the footsteps of some man who will look on me with favour.’ And she said to her, ‘Go, my daughter.’ So she set out and went to glean in the fields after the reapers. And it chanced that she came to that part of the fields which belonged to Boaz of Elimelech’s clan.

  Boaz said to Ruth, ‘Listen, my daughter, and understand this. You are not to glean in any other field, do not leave here but stay with my servants. Keep your eyes on whatever part of the field they are reaping and follow behind. I have ordered my servants not to molest you. And if you are thirsty, go to the pitchers and drink what the servants have drawn.’ Then she fell on her face, bowing to the ground. And she said to him, ‘How have I so earned your favour that you take notice of me, even though I am a foreigner?’ And Boaz answered her, ‘I have been told all you have done for your mother-in-law since your husband’s death, and how you left your own father and mother and the land where you were born to come among a people whom you knew nothing about before you came here.’

  So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. And when they came together, the Lord made her conceive and she bore a son. And the women said to Naomi, ‘Blessed be the Lord who has not left the dead man without next of kin this day to perpetuate his name in Israel. The child will be a comfort to you and the prop of your old age, for your daughter-in-law who loves you and is more to you than seven sons has given him birth.’ And Naomi took the child to her own bosom and she became his nurse.

  And the women of the neighbourhood gave him a name. ‘A son has been born for Naomi’ they said; and they named him Obed. This was the father of David’s father, Jesse.

இயேசு சதுசேயரை வாயடைக்கச் செய்தார் என்பதைக் கேள்விப்பட்ட பரிசேயர் ஒன்றுகூடி அவரிடம் வந்தனர். அவர்களிடையே இருந்த திருச்சட்ட அறிஞர் ஒருவர் அவரைச் சோதிக்கும் நோக்கத்துடன், “போதகரே, திருச்சட்ட நூலில் தலைசிறந்த கட்டளை எது?” என்று கேட்டார்.

அவர், “ ‘உன் முழு இதயத்தோடும், முழு உள்ளத்தோடும், முழு மனத்தோடும் உன் ஆண்டவராகிய கடவுளிடம் அன்பு செலுத்து.’ இதுவே தலைசிறந்த முதன்மையான கட்டளை. ‘உன்மீது நீ அன்பு கூர்வது போல உனக்கு அடுத்திருப்பவர்மீதும் அன்பு கூர்வாயாக’ என்பது இதற்கு இணையான இரண்டாவது கட்டளை. திருச்சட்ட நூல் முழுமைக்கும் இறைவாக்கு நூல்களுக்கும் இவ்விரு கட்டளைகளே அடிப்படையாக அமைகின்றன” என்று பதிலளித்தார்.

நீதித் தலைவர்கள் ஆட்சியாளராய் இருந்த காலத்தில், நாட்டில் ஒரு கொடிய பஞ்சம் உண்டாயிற்று. யூதாவிலுள்ள பெத்லகேம் ஊரைச் சார்ந்த ஒருவர் பிழைப்பதற்கென்று தம் மனைவியையும் மைந்தர் இருவரையும் அழைத்துக்கொண்டு மோவாபு நாட்டிற்குச் சென்றார். அவர் பெயர் எலிமலேக்கு.

அவர்கள் மோவாபு நாட்டை அடைந்து அங்கு வாழ்ந்து வந்தார்கள். அவர்கள் அங்கே இருந்த காலத்தில் எலிமலேக்கு இறந்துபோனார். எனவே, நகோமி தம் இரு மைந்தரைத் தவிர வேறு துணையற்றவரானார்.

அவ்விருவரும் மோவாபு நாட்டுப் பெண்களை மணந்துகொண்டனர். ஒருவர் பெயர் ஓர்பா; மற்றவர் பெயர் ரூத்து. அவர்கள் பிழைக்க வந்து ஏறத்தாழப் பத்தாண்டுகள் ஆயின. பிறகு, மக்லோனும் கிலியோனும் இறந்து போயினர். நகோமி தம் கணவரையும் இரு மைந்தரையும் இழந்து தன்னந்தனியராய் விடப்பட்டார்.

நகோமியின் சொந்த நாட்டில் ஆண்டவர் தம் மக்களைக் கருணையுடன் கண்ணோக்கி, அவர்களுக்கு உணவு கிடைக்கும்படி செய்தார். இதை நகோமி மோவாபு நாட்டில் இருந்தபோதே கேள்விப்பட்டார். எனவே, அவர் மோவாபு நாட்டை விட்டுப்போக ஏற்பாடு செய்தார்.

அதைக் கேட்டு அவர்கள் மீண்டும் கதறி அழுதார்கள். பிறகு ஓர்பா தம் மாமியாருக்கு முத்தம் கொடுத்துவிட்டுத் திரும்பிச் சென்றார். ஆனால் ரூத்தோ பிரிந்துபோக மறுத்துவிட்டார்.

நகோமி அவரிடம், “இதோ பார்! உன் ஓரகத்தி தன் இனத்தவரையும் தன் தெய்வங்களையும் நோக்கித் திரும்பிப் போய்விட்டாள். அவளைப் போல் நீயும் திரும்பிப் போ” என்றார்.

அதற்கு ரூத்து, “உம்மோடு வராமல் உம்மை விட்டுப் பிரிந்து போகும்படி என்னை நீர் வற்புறுத்த வேண்டாம். நீர் செல்லும் இடத்திற்கே நானும் வருவேன்; உமது இல்லமே எனது இல்லம்; உம்முடைய இனமே எனது இனம்; உம்முடைய தெய்வமே எனக்கும் தெய்வம்” என்றார்.

இவ்வாறு, நகோமியும் அவர்தம் மருமகளான மோவாபியப் பெண் ரூத்தும் அந்நாட்டை விட்டுத் திரும்பி வந்தனர். அவர்கள் பெத்லகேம் ஊர் வந்து சேர்ந்தபோது, வாற்கோதுமை அறுவடை தொடங்கியிருந்தது.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 22:34-40. 

When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees they got together and, to disconcert him, one of them put a question, ‘Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?’ Jesus said, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets also.’
