Consolations from the heart of Jerusalem.

A Reading from the Book of Isaiah 40: 1-11. 

‘Console my people, console them’

says your God.

‘Speak to the heart of Jerusalem

and call to her

that her time of service is ended,

that her sin is atoned for,

that she has received from the hand of the Lord

double punishment for all her crimes.’

A voice cries, ‘Prepare in the wilderness

a way for the Lord.

Make a straight highway for our God

across the desert.

Let every valley be filled in,

every mountain and hill be laid low.

Let every cliff become a plain,

and the ridges a valley;

then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed

and all mankind shall see it;

for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.’

A voice commands, ‘Cry!’

and I answered, ‘What shall I cry?’”

– ‘All flesh is grass

and its beauty like the wild flower’s.

The grass withers, the flower fades

when the breath of the Lord blows on them.

(The grass is without doubt the people.)

The grass withers, the flower fades,

but the word of our God remains for ever.’

Go up on a high mountain,

joyful messenger to Zion.

Shout with a loud voice,

joyful messenger to Jerusalem.

Shout without fear,

say to the towns of Judah,

‘Here is your God.’

Here is the Lord coming with power,

his arm subduing all things to him.

The prize of his victory is with him,

his trophies all go before him.

He is like a shepherd feeding his flock,

gathering lambs in his arms,

holding them against his breast

and leading to their rest the mother ewes.

ஒரு நாள் இயேசு கற்பித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தபோது, கலிலேய, யூதேயப் பகுதிகளிலுள்ள எல்லா ஊர்களிலிருந்தும் எருசலேமிலிருந்தும் வந்திருந்த பரிசேயரும் திருச்சட்ட ஆசிரியர்களும் அமர்ந்திருந்தார்கள். பிணி தீர்ப்பதற்கான ஆண்டவரின் வல்லமையை அவர் கொண்டிருந்தார்.

அப்பொழுது சிலர் முடக்குவாதமுற்ற ஒருவரைக் கட்டிலோடு சுமந்துகொண்டு வந்து, அவரை உள்ளே கொண்டுபோய் இயேசுமுன் வைக்க வழி தேடினர். மக்கள் திரண்டிருந்த காரணத்தால் அவரை உள்ளே கொண்டு போக அவர்களால் முடியவில்லை. எனவே அவர்கள் கூரைமேல் ஏறி ஓடுகளைப் பிரித்து அவ்வழியாய் மக்கள் நடுவில் அவரைக் கட்டிலோடு இயேசுவுக்கு முன் இறக்கினார்கள். அவர்களுடைய நம்பிக்கையைக் கண்ட இயேசு அந்த ஆளைப் பார்த்து, “உம் பாவங்கள் மன்னிக்கப்பட்டன” என்றார்.

இதனைக் கேட்ட மறைநூல் அறிஞரும் பரிசேயரும், “கடவுளைப் பழித்துரைக்கும் இவன் யார்? கடவுள் மட்டுமன்றிப் பாவங்களை மன்னிக்க யாரால் இயலும்?” என்று எண்ணிக்கொண்டனர்.

அவர்களின் எண்ணங்களை உய்த்துணர்ந்த இயேசு அவர்களைப் பார்த்து, “உங்கள் உள்ளங்களில் நீங்கள் எண்ணுகிறதென்ன? ‘உம் பாவங்கள் உமக்கு மன்னிக்கப்பட்டன’ என்பதா, அல்லது ‘எழுந்து நடக்கவும்’ என்பதா, எது எளிது? மண்ணுலகில் பாவங்களை மன்னிக்க மானிடமகனுக்கு அதிகாரம் உண்டு என்பதை நீங்கள் அறிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும்” என்றார். எனவே அவர் முடக்குவாதமுற்றவரை நோக்கி, “நான் உமக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்: நீர் எழுந்து உம்முடைய கட்டிலைத் தூக்கிக்கொண்டு உமது வீட்டுக்குப் போம்!” என்றார். உடனே அவர் அவர்கள் முன்பாக எழுந்து, தாம் படுத்திருந்த கட்டிலைத் தூக்கிக்கொண்டு, கடவுளைப் போற்றிப் புகழ்ந்தவாறே தமது வீட்டுக்குப் போனார்.

இதைக் கண்ட யாவரும் மெய்ம்மறந்தவராய்க் கடவுளைப் போற்றிப் புகழ்ந்தனர். அவர்கள் அச்சம் நிறைந்தவராய், “இன்று புதுமையானவற்றைக் கண்டோம்!” என்று பேசிக்கொண்டார்கள்.

ஆண்டவராம் இறைவன் உரைப்பதைக் கேட்பேன்; தம் மக்களுக்கு, தம் பற்றுமிகு அடியார்க்கு நிறைவாழ்வை அவர் வாக்களிக்கின்றார்;

அவருக்கு அஞ்சி நடப்போர்க்கு அவரது மீட்பு அண்மையில் உள்ளது என்பது உறுதி; நம் நாட்டில் அவரது மாட்சி குடிகொள்ளும். - பல்லவி

பாலைநிலமும் பாழ்வெளியும் அகமகிழும்; பொட்டல் நிலம் அக்களிப்படைந்து, லீலிபோல் பூத்துக்குலுங்கும். அது வளமாய்ப் பூத்துக் குலுங்கி மகிழ்ந்து பாடிக் களிப்படையும்; லெபனோனின் எழில் அதற்கு அளிக்கப்படும்; கர்மேல், சாரோனின் மேன்மை அதில் ஒளிரும்; ஆண்டவரின் மாட்சியையும் நம் கடவுளின் பெருமையையும் அவர்கள் காண்பார்கள்.

தளர்ந்துபோன கைகளைத் திடப்படுத்துங்கள்; தள்ளாடும் முழங்கால்களை உறுதிப்படுத்துங்கள். உள்ளத்தில் உறுதியற்றவர்களை நோக்கி, “திடன் கொள்ளுங்கள், அஞ்சாதிருங்கள்; இதோ, உங்கள் கடவுள் பழிதீர்க்க வருவார்; அநீதிக்குப் பழிவாங்கும் கடவுளாக வந்து உங்களை விடுவிப்பார்.”

அப்போது பார்வையற்றோரின் கண்கள் பார்க்கும்; காது கேளாதோரின் செவிகள் கேட்கும். அப்பொழுது, கால் ஊனமுற்றோர் மான்போல் துள்ளிக்குதிப்பர்; வாய்பேசாதோர் மகிழ்ந்து பாடுவர்; பாலைநிலத்தில் நீரூற்றுகள் பீறிட்டு எழும்; வறண்ட நிலத்தில் நீரோடைகள் பாய்ந்தோடும். கனல் கக்கும் மணல்பரப்பு நீர்த் தடாகம் ஆகும்; தாகமுற்ற தரை நீரூற்றுகளால் நிறைந்திருக்கும்; குள்ளநரி தங்கும் வளைகள் எங்கும் கோரையும் நாணலும் முளைத்து நிற்கும்.

அங்கே! நெடுஞ்சாலை ஒன்று இருக்கும்; அது ‘தூய வழி’ என்று பெயர் பெறும். தீட்டுப்பட்டோர் அதன் வழியாய்க் கடந்து செல்லார்; அவ்வழி வரும் பேதையரும் வழி தவறிச் செல்லார். அங்கே சிங்கம் இராது; அவ்வழியில் கொடிய விலங்குகள் செல்வதில்லை, காணப்படுவதுமில்லை; மீட்படைந்தவர்களே அவ்வழியில் நடப்பார்கள். ஆண்டவரால் விடுவிக்கப்பட்டோர் திரும்பி வருவர்; மகிழ்ந்து பாடிக்கொண்டே சீயோனுக்கு வருவர்; அவர்கள் முகம் என்றும் உள்ள மகிழ்ச்சியால் மலர்ந்திருக்கும்; அவர்கள் மகிழ்ச்சியும் பூரிப்பும் அடைவார்கள்; துன்பமும் துயரமும் பறந்தோடும்.

'Your sins are forgiven you: get up and walk'

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 5: 17-26 

Jesus was teaching one day, and among the audience there were Pharisees and doctors of the Law who had come from every village in Galilee, from Judaea and from Jerusalem. And the Power of the Lord was behind his works of healing. Then some men appeared, carrying on a bed a paralysed man whom they were trying to bring in and lay down in front of him. But as the crowd made it impossible to find a way of getting him in, they went up on to the flat roof and lowered him and his stretcher down through the tiles into the middle of the gathering, in front of Jesus. Seeing their faith he said, ‘My friend, your sins are forgiven you.’ The scribes and the Pharisees began to think this over. ‘Who is this man talking blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?’ But Jesus, aware of their thoughts, made them this reply, ‘What are these thoughts you have in your hearts? Which of these is easier: to say, “Your sins are forgiven you” or to say, “Get up and walk”? But to prove to you that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,’ – he said to the paralysed man – ‘I order you: get up, and pick up your stretcher and go home.’ And immediately before their very eyes he got up, picked up what he had been lying on and went home praising God.

  They were all astounded and praised God, and were filled with awe, saying, ‘We have seen strange things today.’

I will hear what the Lord God has to say,

  a voice that speaks of peace,

  peace for his people.

His help is near for those who fear him

  and his glory will dwell in our land.

Mercy and faithfulness have met;

  justice and peace have embraced.

Faithfulness shall spring from the earth

  and justice look down from heaven.

Look, our God is coming to save us.

The Lord will make us prosper

  and our earth shall yield its fruit.

Justice shall march before him

  and peace shall follow his steps.

The return of the redeemed through the desert.

A Reading from the Book of Isaiah 35: 1-10. 

Let the wilderness and the dry-lands exult,

let the wasteland rejoice and bloom,

let it bring forth flowers like the jonquil,

let it rejoice and sing for joy.

The glory of Lebanon is bestowed on it,

the splendour of Carmel and Sharon;

they shall see the glory of the Lord,

the splendour of our God.

Strengthen all weary hands,

steady all trembling knees

and say to all faint hearts,

‘Courage! Do not be afraid.

‘Look, your God is coming,

vengeance is coming,

the retribution of God;

he is coming to save you.’

Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,

the ears of the deaf unsealed,

then the lame shall leap like a deer

and the tongues of the dumb sing for joy;

for water gushes in the desert,

streams in the wasteland,

the scorched earth becomes a lake,

the parched land springs of water.

The lairs where the jackals used to live

become thickets of reed and papyrus...

And through it will run a highway undefiled

which shall be called the Sacred Way;

the unclean may not travel by it,

nor fools stray along it.

No lion will be there

nor any fierce beast roam about it,

but the redeemed will walk there,

for those the Lord has ransomed shall return.

They will come to Zion shouting for joy,

everlasting joy on their faces;

joy and gladness will go with them

and sorrow and lament be ended.
