It is the same justice of God that comes to Jew and pagan alike

A reading from the letter of St.Paul to the Romans 3: 21-30 

God’s justice that was made known through the Law and the Prophets has now been revealed outside the Law, since it is the same justice of God that comes through faith to everyone, Jew and pagan alike, who believes in Jesus Christ. Both Jew and pagan sinned and forfeited God’s glory, and both are justified through the free gift of his grace by being redeemed in Christ Jesus who was appointed by God to sacrifice his life so as to win reconciliation through faith. In this way God makes his justice known; first, for the past, when sins went unpunished because he held his hand, then, for the present age, by showing positively that he is just, and that he justifies everyone who believes in Jesus.

  So what becomes of our boasts? There is no room for them. What sort of law excludes them? The sort of law that tells us what to do? On the contrary, it is the law of faith, since, as we see it, a man is justified by faith and not by doing something the Law tells him to do. Is God the God of Jews alone and not of the pagans too? Of the pagans too, most certainly, since there is only one God.

Your peace will rest on that man

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 10:1-9 

The Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out ahead of him, in pairs, to all the towns and places he himself was to visit. He said to them, ‘The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to his harvest. Start off now, but remember, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Carry no purse, no haversack, no sandals. Salute no one on the road. Whatever house you go into, let your first words be, “Peace to this house!” And if a man of peace lives there, your peace will go and rest on him; if not, it will come back to you. Stay in the same house, taking what food and drink they have to offer, for the labourer deserves his wages; do not move from house to house. Whenever you go into a town where they make you welcome, eat what is set before you. Cure those in it who are sick, and say, “The kingdom of God is very near to you.”’

Only Luke is with me

A reading from the second letter of St.Paul to Timothy 4:10-17 

Demas has deserted me for love of this life and gone to Thessalonika, Crescens has gone to Galatia and Titus to Dalmatia; only Luke is with me. Get Mark to come and bring him with you; I find him a useful helper in my work. I have sent Tychicus to Ephesus. When you come, bring the cloak I left with Carpus in Troas, and the scrolls, especially the parchment ones. Alexander the coppersmith has done me a lot of harm; the Lord will repay him for what he has done. Be on your guard against him yourself, because he has been bitterly contesting everything that we say.

  The first time I had to present my defence, there was not a single witness to support me. Every one of them deserted me – may they not be held accountable for it. But the Lord stood by me and gave me power, so that through me the whole message might be proclaimed for all the pagans to hear.

அக்காலத்தில்

ஆண்டவர் வேறு எழுபத்திரண்டு பேரை நியமித்து, அவர்களைத் தாம் போக இருந்த எல்லா ஊர்களுக்கும் இடங்களுக்கும் தமக்கு முன்னே இருவர் இருவராக அனுப்பினார்.

அப்போது அவர் அவர்களை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: “அறுவடை மிகுதி; வேலையாள்களோ குறைவு. ஆகையால் தமது அறுவடைக்குத் தேவையான வேலையாள்களை அனுப்பும்படி அறுவடையின் உரிமையாளரிடம் மன்றாடுங்கள். புறப்பட்டுப் போங்கள்; ஓநாய்களிடையே ஆட்டுக் குட்டிகளை அனுப்புவதுபோல் உங்களை நான் அனுப்புகிறேன். பணப் பையோ வேறு பையோ மிதியடிகளோ எதுவும் நீங்கள் எடுத்துச் செல்ல வேண்டாம்; வழியில் எவருக்கும் வணக்கம் செலுத்த வேண்டாம்.

நீங்கள் எந்த வீட்டுக்குள் சென்றாலும், ‘இந்த வீட்டுக்கு அமைதி உண்டாகுக!’ என முதலில் கூறுங்கள். அமைதியை விரும்புபவர் அங்கு இருந்தால், நீங்கள் வாழ்த்திக் கூறிய அமைதி அவரிடம் தங்கும்; இல்லா விட்டால் அது உங்களிடமே திரும்பிவிடும்.

அவர்களிடம் உள்ளதை நீங்கள் உண்டு குடித்து அந்த வீட்டிலேயே தங்கியிருங்கள். ஏனெனில் வேலையாளர் தம் கூலிக்கு உரிமை உடையவரே.

வீடு வீடாய்ச் செல்ல வேண்டாம். நீங்கள் செல்லும் ஊரில் உங்களை ஏற்றுக்கொண்டால் உங்களுக்குப் பரிமாறுவதை உண்ணுங்கள். அங்கு உடல் நலம் குன்றியோரைக் குணமாக்கி, இறையாட்சி அவர்களை நெருங்கி வந்துவிட்டது எனச் சொல்லுங்கள்.”

அன்பிற்குரியவரே,

விரைவில் என்னிடம் வர முழு முயற்சி செய். தேமா இன்றைய உலகப் போக்கை விரும்பி என்னை விட்டு அகன்று, தெசலோனிக்கா சென்றுவிட்டார். கிரேஸ்கு கலாத்தியாவுக்கும் தீத்து தல்மாத்தியாவுக்கும் சென்றுவிட்டனர். என்னுடன் லூக்கா மட்டுமே இருக்கிறார். மாற்கை உன்னுடன் கூட்டி வா. அவர் திருத்தொண்டில் எனக்கு மிகவும் பயனுள்ளவர். திக்கிக்குவை நான் எபேசுக்கு அனுப்பிவிட்டேன். நீ வரும்போது நான் துரோவாவில் கார்ப்புவிடம் விட்டுவந்த போர்வையையும் நூல்களையும், குறிப்பாகத் தோற்சுருளையும் எடுத்துவா.

கன்னானாகிய அலக்சாந்தர் எனக்குப் பல தீமைகளைச் செய்தான். அவன் செயலுக்குத் தக்கவாறு ஆண்டவர் அவனுக்குப் பதிலளிப்பார். அவனிடமிருந்து உன்னைக் காத்துக்கொள். அவன் நம்முடைய போதனையை அதிகம் எதிர்த்தவன்.

நான் முதன்முறை வழக்காடியபோது எவரும் என் பக்கம் இருக்கவில்லை; எல்லாரும் என்னை விட்டு அகன்றனர். அக்குற்றம் அவர்களைச் சாராது இருப்பதாக. நான் அறிவித்த செய்தி நிறைவுற்று, அனைத்து நாட்டவரும் அதனைக் கேட்கவேண்டுமென்று ஆண்டவர் என் பக்கம் நின்று எனக்கு வலுவூட்டினார்; சிங்கத்தின் வாயிலிருந்தும் என்னை விடுவித்தார்.
