A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah 55:1-11 

Thus says the Lord:

Oh, come to the water all you who are thirsty;

though you have no money, come!

Buy corn without money, and eat,

and, at no cost, wine and milk.

Why spend money on what is not bread,

your wages on what fails to satisfy?

Listen, listen to me, and you will have good things to eat

and rich food to enjoy.

Pay attention, come to me;

listen, and your soul will live.

With you I will make an everlasting covenant

out of the favours promised to David.

See, I have made of you a witness to the peoples,

a leader and a master of the nations.

See, you will summon a nation you never knew,

those unknown will come hurrying to you,

for the sake of the Lord your God,

of the Holy One of Israel who will glorify you.

Seek the Lord while he is still to be found,

call to him while he is still near.

Let the wicked man abandon his way,

the evil man his thoughts.

Yes, as the rain and the snow come down from the heavens and do not return without watering the earth, making it yield and giving growth to provide seed for the sower and bread for the eating, so the word that goes from my mouth does not return to me empty, without carrying out my will and succeeding in what it was sent to do.

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah 54:5-14 

Thus says the Lord:

Now your creator will be your husband,

his name, the Lord of Hosts;

your redeemer will be the Holy One of Israel,

he is called the God of the whole earth.

Yes, like a forsaken wife, distressed in spirit,

the Lord calls you back.

Does a man cast off the wife of his youth?

says your God.

I did forsake you for a brief moment,

but with great love will I take you back.

In excess of anger, for a moment

I hid my face from you.

But with everlasting love I have taken pity on you,

says the Lord, your redeemer.

I am now as I was in the days of Noah

when I swore that Noah’s waters

should never flood the world again.

So now I swear concerning my anger with you

and the threats I made against you;

for the mountains may depart,

The sons of Israel went on dry ground right into the sea

A Reading from the Book of Exodus 14:15-15:1 

The Lord said to Moses, ‘Why do you cry to me so? Tell the sons of Israel to march on. For yourself, raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and part it for the sons of Israel to walk through the sea on dry ground. I for my part will make the heart of the Egyptians so stubborn that they will follow them. So shall I win myself glory at the expense of Pharaoh, of all his army, his chariots, his horsemen. And when I have won glory for myself, at the expense of Pharaoh and his chariots and his army, the Egyptians will learn that I am the Lord.’

  Then the angel of God, who marched at the front of the army of Israel, changed station and moved to their rear. The pillar of cloud changed station from the front to the rear of them, and remained there. It came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. The cloud was dark, and the night passed without the armies drawing any closer the whole night long.

  Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. The Lord drove back the sea with a strong easterly wind all night, and he made dry land of the sea. The waters parted and the sons of Israel went on dry ground right into the sea, walls of water to right and to left of them. The Egyptians gave chase: after them they went, right into the sea, all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.

  In the morning watch, the Lord looked down on the army of the Egyptians from the pillar of fire and of cloud, and threw the army into confusion. He so clogged their chariot wheels that they could scarcely make headway. ‘Let us flee from the Israelites,’ the Egyptians cried. ‘The Lord is fighting for them against the Egyptians!’

  ‘Stretch out your hand over the sea,’ the Lord said to Moses, ‘that the waters may flow back on the Egyptians and their chariots and their horsemen.’

  Moses stretched out his hand over the sea and, as day broke, the sea returned to its bed. The fleeing Egyptians marched right into it, and the Lord overthrew the Egyptians in the very middle of the sea. The returning waters overwhelmed the chariots and the horsemen of Pharaoh’s whole army, which had followed the Israelites into the sea; not a single one of them was left. But the sons of Israel had marched through the sea on dry ground, walls of water to right and to left of them.

  That day, the Lord rescued Israel from the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore. Israel witnessed the great act that the Lord had performed against the Egyptians, and the people venerated the Lord; they put their faith in the Lord and in Moses, his servant.

  It was then that Moses and the sons of Israel sang this song in honour of the Lord:

A Reading from the Book of Genesis 22:1-18 

The sacrifice of Abraham, our father in faith

God put Abraham to the test. ‘Abraham, Abraham’ he called. ‘Here I am’ he replied. ‘Take your son,’ God said ‘your only child Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him as a burnt offering, on a mountain I will point out to you.’

  Rising early next morning Abraham saddled his ass and took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. He chopped wood for the burnt offering and started on his journey to the place God had pointed out to him. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. Then Abraham said to his servants, ‘Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there; we will worship and come back to you.’

  Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering, loaded it on Isaac, and carried in his own hands the fire and the knife. Then the two of them set out together. Isaac spoke to his father Abraham, ‘Father’ he said. ‘Yes, my son’ he replied. ‘Look,’ he said ‘here are the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?’ Abraham answered, ‘My son, God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering.’ Then the two of them went on together.

  When they arrived at the place God had pointed out to him, Abraham built an altar there, and arranged the wood. Then he bound his son Isaac and put him on the altar on top of the wood. Abraham stretched out his hand and seized the knife to kill his son.

  But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven. ‘Abraham, Abraham’ he said. ‘I am here’ he replied. ‘Do not raise your hand against the boy’ the angel said. ‘Do not harm him, for now I know you fear God. You have not refused me your son, your only son.’ Then looking up, Abraham saw a ram caught by its horns in a bush. Abraham took the ram and offered it as a burnt-offering in place of his son.

  Abraham called this place ‘The Lord Provides’, and hence the saying today: On the mountain the Lord provides.

  The angel of the Lord called Abraham a second time from heaven. ‘I swear by my own self – it is the Lord who speaks – because you have done this, because you have not refused me your son, your only son, I will shower blessings on you, I will make your descendants as many as the stars of heaven and the grains of sand on the seashore. Your descendants shall gain possession of the gates of their enemies. All the nations of the earth shall bless themselves by your descendants, as a reward for your obedience.’

A Reading from the Book of Genesis 1:1-2:2 

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was a formless void, there was darkness over the deep, and God’s spirit hovered over the water.

  God said, ‘Let there be light’, and there was light. God saw that light was good, and God divided light from darkness. God called light ‘day’, and darkness he called ‘night.’ Evening came and morning came: the first day.

  God said, ‘Let there be a vault in the waters to divide the waters in two.’ And so it was. God made the vault, and it divided the waters above the vault from the waters under the vault. God called the vault ‘heaven.’ Evening came and morning came: the second day.

  God said, ‘Let the waters under heaven come together into a single mass, and let dry land appear.’ And so it was. God called the dry land ‘earth’ and the mass of waters ‘seas’, and God saw that it was good.

  God said, ‘Let the earth produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants, and fruit trees bearing fruit with their seed inside, on the earth.’ And so it was. The earth produced vegetation: plants bearing seed in their several kinds, and trees bearing fruit with their seed inside in their several kinds. God saw that it was good. Evening came and morning came: the third day.

  God said, ‘Let there be lights in the vault of heaven to divide day from night, and let them indicate festivals, days and years. Let them be lights in the vault of heaven to shine on the earth.’ And so it was. God made the two great lights: the greater light to govern the day, the smaller light to govern the night, and the stars. God set them in the vault of heaven to shine on the earth, to govern the day and the night and to divide light from darkness. God saw that it was good. Evening came and morning came: the fourth day.

  God said, ‘Let the waters teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth within the vault of heaven.’ And so it was. God created great sea-serpents and every kind of living creature with which the waters teem, and every kind of winged creature. God saw that it was good. God blessed them, saying, ‘Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the waters of the seas; and let the birds multiply upon the earth.’ Evening came and morning came: the fifth day.

  God said, ‘Let the earth produce every kind of living creature: cattle, reptiles, and every kind of wild beast.’ And so it was. God made every kind of wild beast, every kind of cattle, and every kind of land reptile. God saw that it was good.

  God said, ‘Let us make man in our own image, in the likeness of ourselves, and let them be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven, the cattle, all the wild beasts and all the reptiles that crawl upon the earth.’

God created man in the image of himself,

in the image of God he created him,

male and female he created them.

God blessed them, saying to them, ‘Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and conquer it. Be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven and all living animals on the earth.’ God said, ‘See, I give you all the seed-bearing plants that are upon the whole earth, and all the trees with seed-bearing fruit; this shall be your food. To all wild beasts, all birds of heaven and all living reptiles on the earth I give all the foliage of plants for food.’ And so it was. God saw all he had made, and indeed it was very good. Evening came and morning came: the sixth day.

  Thus heaven and earth were completed with all their array. On the seventh day God completed the work he had been doing. He rested on the seventh day after all the work he had been doing.

இயேசு தம் சீடர்களோடு கெதரோன் என்னும் நீரோடையைக் கடந்து சென்றார். அங்கே ஒரு தோட்டம் இருந்தது. தம் சீடர்களோடு இயேசு அதில் நுழைந்தார். அவரைக் காட்டிக் கொடுத்த யூதாசுக்கு அந்த இடம் தெரியும். ஏனெனில், இயேசுவும் அவருடைய சீடர்களும் அடிக்கடி அங்குக் கூடுவர். படைப் பிரிவினரையும், தலைமைக் குருக்களும் பரிசேயரும் அனுப்பிய காவலர்களையும் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு யூதாசு விளக்குகளோடும் பந்தங்களோடும் படைக்கலங்களோடும் அங்கே வந்தான். தமக்கு நிகழப்போகிற அனைத்தையும் இயேசு அறிந்து அவர்கள்முன் சென்று, “யாரைத் தேடுகிறீர்கள்?” என்று கேட்டார். அவர்கள் மறுமொழியாக, “நாசரேத்து இயேசுவைத் தேடுகிறோம்” என்றார்கள். இயேசு, “நான்தான்” என்றார். அவரைக் காட்டிக்கொடுத்த யூதாசும் அவர்களோடு நின்றுகொண்டிருந்தான். ‘நான்தான்’ என்று இயேசு அவர்களிடம் சொன்னதும் அவர்கள் பின்வாங்கித் தரையில் விழுந்தார்கள். “யாரைத் தேடுகிறீர்கள்?” என்று இயேசு மீண்டும் அவர்களிடம் கேட்டார். அவர்கள், “நாசரேத்து இயேசுவைத் தேடுகிறோம்” என்றார்கள். இயேசு அவர்களைப் பார்த்து, “ ‘நான்தான்’ என்று உங்களிடம் சொன்னேனே. நீங்கள் என்னைத் தேடுகிறீர்கள் என்றால் இவர்களைப் போகவிடுங்கள்” என்றார். “நீர் என்னிடம் ஒப்படைத்தவர்களுள் எவரையும் நான் இழந்துவிடவில்லை” என்று அவரே கூறியிருந்தது இவ்வாறு நிறைவேறியது.

சீமோன் பேதுருவிடம் ஒரு வாள் இருந்தது. அவர் அதை உருவித் தலைமைக்குருவின் பணியாளரைத் தாக்கி அவரது வலக்காதை வெட்டினார். அப்பணியாளரின் பெயர் மால்கு. இயேசு பேதுருவிடம், “வாளை உறையில் போடு. தந்தை எனக்கு அளித்த துன்பக் கிண்ணத் திலிருந்து நான் குடிக்காமல் இருப்பேனோ?” என்றார்.

படைப்பிரிவினரும் ஆயிரத்தவர் தலைவரும் யூதர்களின் காவலர்களும் இயேசுவைப் பிடித்துக் கட்டி, முதலில் அவரை அன்னாவிடம் கொண்டு சென்றார்கள். ஏனெனில் அந்த ஆண்டில் தலைமைக் குருவாய் இருந்த கயபாவுக்கு அவர் மாமனார். இந்தக் கயபாதான், “மக்களுக்காக ஒருவர் மட்டும் இறப்பது நல்லது” என்று யூதர்களுக்கு ஆலோசனை கூறியவர்.

சீமோன் பேதுருவும் மற்றொரு சீடரும் இயேசுவைப் பின்தொடர்ந்து வந்தனர். அந்தச் சீடர் தலைமைக் குருவுக்கு அறிமுகமானவர்; ஆகவே இயேசுவுடன் தலைமைக் குருவின் மாளிகை முற்றத்தில் நுழைந்தார். பேதுரு வெளியில் வாயிலருகே நின்றுகொண்டிருந்தார். அப்போது தலைமைக் குருவுக்கு அறிமுகமாயிருந்த அந்தச் சீடர் வெளியே வந்து, வாயில் காவலரிடம் சொல்லிப் பேதுருவை உள்ளே கூட்டிச் சென்றார். வாயில் காவல் செய்த அப்பணிப்பெண் பேதுருவிடம், “நீயும் இம்மனிதனுடைய சீடருள் ஒருவன்தானே?” என்று கேட்டார். பேதுரு, “இல்லை” என்றார். அப்போது குளிராய் இருந்ததால் பணியாளர்களும் காவலர்களும் கரியினால் தீ மூட்டி அங்கே நின்று குளிர்காய்ந்து கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். பேதுருவும் சென்று அவர்களோடு நின்று குளிர்காய்ந்து கொண்டிருந்தார்.

தலைமைக் குரு இயேசுவின் சீடர்களைப்பற்றியும் அவருடைய போதனையைப்பற்றியும் அவரிடம் கேட்டார். இயேசு அவரைப் பார்த்து, “நான் உலகறிய வெளிப்படையாய்ப் பேசினேன். யூதர் அனைவரும் கூடிவரும் தொழுகைக்கூடங்களிலும் கோவிலிலும்தான் எப்போதும் கற்பித்து வந்தேன். நான் மறைவாக எதையும் பேசியதில்லை. ஏன் என்னிடம் கேட்கிறீர்? நான் பேசியதைக் கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்தவர்களிடம் கேட்டுப்பாரும். நான் என்ன சொன்னேன் என அவர்களுக்குத் தெரியுமே” என்றார்.

அவர் இப்படிச் சொன்னதால் அங்கு நின்று கொண்டிருந்த காவலருள் ஒருவர், “தலைமைக் குருவுக்கு இப்படியா பதில் கூறுகிறாய்?” என்று சொல்லி இயேசுவின் கன்னத்தில் அறைந்தார். இயேசு அவரிடம், “நான் தவறாகப் பேசியிருந்தால் தவறு என்னவெனக் காட்டும். சரியாகப் பேசியிருந்தால் ஏன் என்னை அடிக்கிறீர்?” என்று கேட்டார். அதன்பின் அன்னா அவரைக் கட்டப்பட்ட நிலையில் தலைமைக் குரு கயபாவிடம் அனுப்பினார்.

சீமோன் பேதுரு அங்கு நின்று குளிர்காய்ந்து கொண்டிருந்தார். அப்போது அங்கிருந்தவர்கள் அவரிடம், “நீயும் அவனுடைய சீடர்களுள் ஒருவன்தானே” என்று கேட்டனர். அவர் “இல்லை” என்று மறுதலித்தார். தலைமைக் குருவின் பணியாளருள் ஒருவர், “நான் உன்னைத் தோட்டத்தில் அவரோடு பார்க்கவில்லையா?” என்று கேட்டார். பேதுருவால் காது வெட்டப்பட்டவருக்கு இவர் உறவினர். பேதுரு மீண்டும் மறுதலித்தார். உடனே சேவல் கூவிற்று.

அதன்பின் அவர்கள் கயபாவிடமிருந்து ஆளுநர் மாளிகைக்கு இயேசுவைக் கொண்டுசென்றார்கள். அப்போது விடியற்காலம். பாஸ்கா உணவை உண்ணுமுன் தீட்டுப்படாமலிருக்க ஆளுநர் மாளிகையில் அவர்கள் நுழையவில்லை. எனவே பிலாத்து வெளியே அவர்களிடம் வந்து, “நீங்கள் இந்த ஆளுக்கு எதிராகக் கூறும் குற்றச்சாட்டு என்ன?” என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு அவர்கள், “இவன் குற்றம் செய்யாதிருந்தால் இவனை நாங்கள் உம்மிடம் ஒப்புவித்திருக்கமாட்டோம்” என்றார்கள். பிலாத்து அவர்களிடம், “நீங்கள் இவனைக் கொண்டுபோய் உங்கள் சட்டப்படி இவனுக்குத் தீர்ப்பு வழங்குங்கள்” என்றார். யூதர்கள் அவரிடம், “சட்டப்படி நாங்கள் யாருக்கும் மரண தண்டனை விதிக்க முடியாது” என்றார்கள். இவ்வாறு, தாம் எப்படிப்பட்ட சாவுக்கு உட்படப் போகிறார் என்பதைக் குறிப்பிட்டு இயேசு கூறியிருந்ததை நிறைவேறச் செய்தார்கள்.

பிலாத்து மீண்டும் ஆளுநர் மாளிகைக்குள் சென்று இயேசுவைக் கூப்பிட்டு அவரிடம், “நீ யூதரின் அரசனா?” என்று கேட்டான். இயேசு மறுமொழியாக, “நீராக இதைக் கேட்கிறீரா? அல்லது மற்றவர்கள் என்னைப்பற்றி உம்மிடம் சொன்னதை வைத்துக் கேட்கிறீரா?” என்று கேட்டார். அதற்குப் பிலாத்து, “நான் ஒரு யூதனா, என்ன? உன் இனத்தவரும் தலைமைக் குருக்களும்தானே உன்னை என்னிடம் ஒப்புவித்தார்கள். நீ என்ன செய்தாய்?"என்று கேட்டான். இயேசு மறுமொழியாக, “எனது ஆட்சி இவ்வுலக ஆட்சி போன்றது அல்ல. அது இவ்வுலக ஆட்சி போன்றதாய் இருந்திருந்தால் நான் யூதர்களிடம் காட்டிக்கொடுக்கப்படாதவாறு என் காவலர்கள் போராடியிருப்பார்கள். ஆனால் என் ஆட்சி இவ்வுலக ஆட்சி போன்றது அல்ல” என்றார். பிலாத்து அவரிடம், “அப்படியானால் நீ அரசன்தானோ?” என்று கேட்டான். அதற்கு இயேசு, “அரசன் என்று நீர் சொல்கிறீர். உண்மையை எடுத்துரைப்பதே என் பணி. இதற்காகவே நான் பிறந்தேன்; இதற்காகவே உலகிற்கு வந்தேன். உண்மையைச் சார்ந்தவர் அனைவரும் என் குரலுக்குச் செவிசாய்க்கின்றனர்” என்றார்.

பிலாத்து அவரிடம், “உண்மையா? அது என்ன?” என்று கேட்டார். இப்படிக் கேட்டபின் பிலாத்து மீண்டும் யூதரிடம் சென்று, “இவனிடம் நான் குற்றம் ஒன்றும் காணவில்லையே” என்றான். மேலும், “பாஸ்கா விழாவின்போது உங்கள் விருப்பப்படி ஒரு கைதியை விடுதலை செய்யும் வழக்கம் உண்டே! யூதரின் அரசனாகிய இவனை நான் விடுதலை செய்யட்டுமா? உங்கள் விருப்பம் என்ன?” என்று கேட்டான். அதற்கு அவர்கள், “இவன் வேண்டாம். பரபாவையே விடுதலை செய்யும்” என்று மீண்டும் கத்தினார்கள். அந்தப் பரபா ஒரு கள்வன்.

பின்னர் பிலாத்து இயேசுவைச் சாட்டையால் அடிக்கச் செய்தான். வீரர்கள் ஒரு முள்முடி பின்னி அவர் தலையின்மேல் வைத்து, செந்நிற மேலுடையை அவருக்கு அணிவித்தார்கள். அவரிடம் வந்து, “யூதரின் அரசே வாழ்க!” என்று சொல்லி அவருடைய கன்னத்தில் அறைந்தார்கள்.

பிலாத்து மீண்டும் வெளியே வந்து அவர்களிடம், “அவனை நான் உங்கள்முன் வெளியே கூட்டிவருகிறேன், பாருங்கள். அவனிடம் நான் குற்றம் ஒன்றும் காணவில்லை என்பதை அறிந்துகொள்ளுங்கள்” என்றான். இயேசு முள்முடியும் செந்நிற மேலுடையும் அணிந்தவராய் வெளியே வந்தார். பிலாத்து அவர்களிடம், “இதோ! மனிதன்” என்றான். அவரைக் கண்டதும் தலைமைக் குருக்களும் காவலர்களும், “சிலுவையில் அறையும், சிலுவையில் அறையும்” என்று கத்தினார்கள். பிலாத்து அவர்களிடம், “நீங்களே இவனைக் கொண்டுபோய்ச் சிலுவையில் அறையுங்கள். இவனிடம் குற்றம் இருப்பதாக எனக்குத் தெரியவில்லை” என்றான். யூதர்கள் அவரைப் பார்த்து, “எங்களுக்கு ஒரு சட்டம் உண்டு. அச்சட்டத்தின்படி இவன் சாகவேண்டும். ஏனெனில் இவன் தன்னையே இறைமகன் என உரிமை கொண்டாடுகிறான்” என்றனர்.

பிலாத்து இதைக் கேட்டதும் இன்னும் மிகுதியாக அஞ்சினான். அவன் மீண்டும் ஆளுநர் மாளிகைக்குச் சென்று இயேசுவிடம், “நீ எங்கிருந்து வந்தவன்?” என்று கேட்டான். ஆனால் இயேசு அவனுக்குப் பதில் கூறவில்லை. அப்போது பிலாத்து, “என்னோடு பேசமாட்டாயா? உன்னை விடுதலை செய்யவும் எனக்கு அதிகாரம் உண்டு, உன்னைச் சிலுவையில் அறையவும் எனக்கு அதிகாரம் உண்டு என்பது உனக்குத் தெரியாதா?” என்றான். இயேசு மறுமொழியாக, “மேலிருந்து அருளப்படாவிடில் உமக்கு என்மேல் எந்த அதிகாரமும் இராது. ஆகவே என்னை உம்மிடம் ஒப்புவித்தவன்தான் பெரும் பாவம் செய்தவன்” என்றார்.

அதுமுதல் பிலாத்து அவரை விடுவிக்க வழி தேடினான். ஆனால் யூதர்கள், “நீர் இவனை விடுவித்தால் சீசருடைய நண்பராய் இருக்க முடியாது. தம்மையே அரசராக்கிக்கொள்ளும் எவரும் சீசருக்கு எதிரி” என்றார்கள். இவ்வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்டதும் பிலாத்து இயேசுவை வெளியே கூட்டிவந்தான். ‘கல்தளம்’ என்னும் இடத்தில் இருந்த நடுவர் இருக்கைமீது அமர்ந்தான். அந்த இடத்திற்கு எபிரேய மொழியில் ‘கபதா’ என்பது பெயர்.

அன்று பாஸ்கா விழாவுக்கு ஏற்பாடு செய்யும் நாள். ஏறக்குறைய நண்பகல் வேளை. பிலாத்து யூதர்களிடம், “இதோ, உங்கள் அரசன்!” என்றான். அவர்கள், “ஒழிக! ஒழிக! அவனைச் சிலுவையில் அறையும்” என்று கத்தினார்கள். பிலாத்து அவர்களிடம், “உங்கள் அரசனை நான் சிலுவையில் அறையவேண்டும் என்கிறீர்களா?” என்று கேட்டான். அதற்குத் தலைமைக் குருக்கள், “எங்களுக்குச் சீசரைத் தவிர வேறு அரசர் இல்லை” என்றார்கள். அப்போது பிலாத்து அவரைச் சிலுவையில் அறையுமாறு அவர்களிடம் ஒப்புவித்தான். அவர்கள் இயேசுவைத் தம் பொறுப்பில் ஏற்றுக்கொண்டார்கள்.

இயேசு சிலுவையைத் தாமே சுமந்துகொண்டு ‘மண்டை ஓட்டு இடம்’ என்னுமிடத்திற்குச் சென்றார். அதற்கு எபிரேய மொழியில் கொல்கொதா என்பது பெயர். அங்கே அவர்கள் இயேசுவையும் அவரோடு வேறு இருவரையும் சிலுவைகளில் அறைந்தார்கள்; அவ்விருவரையும் இரு பக்கங்களிலும் இயேசுவை நடுவிலுமாக அறைந்தார்கள். பிலாத்து குற்ற அறிக்கை ஒன்று எழுதி அதைச் சிலுவையின்மீது வைத்தான். அதில் “நாசரேத்து இயேசு யூதர்களின் அரசன்” என்று எழுதியிருந்தது. இயேசு சிலுவையில் அறையப்பட்ட இடம் நகரத்துக்கு அருகில் இருந்ததால் யூதருள் பலர் இந்தக் குற்ற அறிக்கையை வாசித்தனர். அது எபிரேயம், இலத்தீன், கிரேக்கம் ஆகிய மொழிகளில் எழுதப்பட்டிருந்தது. யூதரின் தலைமைக் குருக்கள் பிலாத்திடம், “ ‘யூதரின் அரசன்’ என்று எழுத வேண்டாம்; மாறாக, ‘யூதரின் அரசன் நான்’ என்று அவனே சொல்லிக்கொண்டதாக எழுதும்” என்று கேட்டுக்கொண்டார்கள். பிலாத்து அவர்களைப் பார்த்து, “நான் எழுதியது எழுதியதே” என்றான்.

இயேசுவைச் சிலுவையில் அறைந்தபின் படைவீரர் அவருடைய மேலுடைகளை நான்கு பாகமாகப் பிரித்து ஆளுக்கு ஒரு பாகம் எடுத்துக்கொண்டார்கள். அங்கியையும் அவர்களே எடுத்துக்கொண்டனர். அந்த அங்கி மேலிருந்து கீழ்வரை தையலே இல்லாமல் நெய்யப்பட்டிருந்தது. எனவே அவர்கள் ஒருவரை ஒருவர் நோக்கி, “அதைக் கிழிக்க வேண்டாம். அது யாருக்குக் கிடைக்கும் என்று பார்க்கச் சீட்டுக் குலுக்கிப் போடுவோம்” என்றார்கள். “என் ஆடைகளைத் தங்களுக்குள் பகிர்ந்து என் உடைமீது சீட்டுப் போட்டார்கள்” என்னும் மறைநூல் வாக்கு இவ்வாறு நிறைவேறியது.

சிலுவை அருகில் இயேசுவின் தாயும், தாயின் சகோதரியும் குளோப்பாவின் மனைவியுமான மரியாவும், மகதலா மரியாவும் நின்றுகொண்டிருந்தனர். இயேசு தம் தாயையும் அருகில் நின்ற தம் அன்புச் சீடரையும் கண்டு தம் தாயிடம், “அம்மா, இவரே உம் மகன்” என்றார். பின்னர் தம் சீடரிடம், “இவரே உம் தாய்” என்றார். அந்நேரமுதல் அச்சீடர் அவரைத் தம் வீட்டில் ஏற்று ஆதரவு அளித்து வந்தார்.

இதன்பின், அனைத்தும் நிறைவேறிவிட்டது என்பதை அறிந்த இயேசு, “தாகமாய் இருக்கிறது” என்றார். மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ளது நிறைவேறவே இவ்வாறு சொன்னார். அங்கே ஒரு பாத்திரம் நிறையப் புளித்த திராட்சை இரசம் இருந்தது. அதில் கடற்பஞ்சை நன்கு தோய்த்து, ஈசோப்புத் தண்டில் பொருத்தி, அதை அவர்கள் அவரது வாயில் வைத்தார்கள். அந்த இரசத்தைக் குடித்ததும் இயேசு, “எல்லாம் நிறைவேறிற்று” என்று கூறித் தலை சாய்த்து ஆவியை ஒப்படைத்தார்.

அன்று பாஸ்கா விழாவுக்கு ஏற்பாடு செய்யும் நாள். அடுத்த நாள் ஓய்வுநாளாகவும் பெருநாளாகவும் இருந்தது. எனவே அன்று சிலுவையில் உடல்கள் தொங்கலாகா என்பதற்காகக் கால்களை முறித்துச் சடலங்களை எடுத்துவிடுமாறு யூதர்கள் பிலாத்திடம் கேட்டுக்கொண்டார்கள். ஆகவே படைவீரர் வந்து இயேசுவோடு சிலுவையில் அறையப்பட்டிருந்தவருள் ஒருவனுடைய கால்களை முதலில் முறித்தார்கள்; பின்னர் மற்றவனுடைய கால்களையும் முறித்தார்கள். பின்பு அவர்கள் இயேசுவிடம் வந்தார்கள். அவர் ஏற்கெனவே இறந்துபோயிருந்ததைக் கண்டு அவருடைய கால்களை முறிக்கவில்லை. ஆனால் படைவீரருள் ஒருவர் இயேசுவின் விலாவை ஈட்டியால் குத்தினார். உடனே இரத்தமும் தண்ணீரும் வடிந்தன. இதை நேரில் கண்டவரே இதற்குச் சாட்சி. அவரது சான்று உண்மையானதே. அவர் உண்மையையே கூறுகிறார் என்பது அவருக்குத் தெரியும். நீங்களும் நம்பவேண்டும் என்பதற்காகவே அவர் இதைக் கூறுகிறார். “எந்த எலும்பும் முறிபடாது” என்னும் மறைநூல் வாக்கு இவ்வாறு நிறைவேறியது. மேலும் “தாங்கள் ஊடுருவக் குத்தியவரை உற்று நோக்குவார்கள்” என்றும் மறைநூல் கூறுகிறது.

அரிமத்தியா ஊரைச் சேர்ந்த யோசேப்பு என்பவர் இயேசுவின் சீடர்களுள் ஒருவர்; யூதருக்கு அஞ்சியதால் தம்மைச் சீடர் என்று வெளிப்படையாகக் காட்டிக்கொள்ளாதவர். அவர் இயேசுவின் உடலை எடுத்துக் கொண்டுபோகப் பிலாத்திடம் அனுமதி கேட்டார். பிலாத்தும் அனுமதி கொடுத்தான். யோசேப்பு வந்து இயேசுவின் சடலத்தை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு போனார்.

முன்பு ஒரு முறை இரவில் இயேசுவிடம் வந்த நிக்கதேம் என்பவரும் அங்கு வந்துசேர்ந்தார். அவர் வெள்ளைப் போளமும் சந்தனத் தூளும் கலந்து ஏறக்குறைய முப்பது கிலோகிராம் கொண்டுவந்தார். அவர்கள் இயேசுவின் உடலை எடுத்து யூத அடக்க முறைப்படி நறுமணப் பொருள்களுடன் துணிகளால் சுற்றிக் கட்டினார்கள். அவர் சிலுவையில் அறையப்பட்டிருந்த இடத்தில் ஒரு தோட்டம் இருந்தது. அங்கே புதிய கல்லறை ஒன்று இருந்தது. அதில் அதுவரை யாரும் அடக்கம் செய்யப்படவில்லை. அன்று பாஸ்கா விழாவுக்கு ஆயத்த நாளாய் இருந்ததாலும் அக்கல்லறை அருகில் இருந்ததாலும் அவர்கள் இயேசுவை அதில் அடக்கம் செய்தார்கள்.

கீழ்ப்படிதலைக் கற்றுக்கொண்டார்; தமக்குக் கீழ்ப்படிவோர் அனைவரும் என்றென்றும் மீட்படையக் காரணமானார்.

வானங்களைக் கடந்து சென்ற இறைமகனாகிய இயேசுவை நாம் தனிப்பெரும் தலைமைக் குருவாகக் கொண்டுள்ளதால் நாம் அறிக்கையிடுவதை விடாது பற்றிக்கொள்வோமாக! ஏனெனில், நம் தலைமைக் குரு நம்முடைய வலுவின்மையைக் கண்டு இரக்கம் காட்ட இயலாதவர் அல்ல; மாறாக, எல்லா வகையிலும் நம்மைப்போலச் சோதிக்கப்பட்டவர்; எனினும் பாவம் செய்யாதவர். எனவே, நாம் இரக்கத்தைப் பெறவும், ஏற்ற வேளையில் உதவக்கூடிய அருளைக் கண்டடையவும், அருள்நிறைந்த இறை அரியணையைத் துணிவுடன் அணுகிச் செல்வோமாக.

அவர் இவ்வுலகில் வாழ்ந்த காலத்தில், தம்மைச் சாவிலிருந்து காப்பாற்ற வல்லவரை நோக்கி உரத்த குரல் எழுப்பி, கண்ணீர் சிந்தி, மன்றாடி வேண்டினார். அவர் கொண்டிருந்த இறைப்பற்று கலந்த அச்சத்தை முன்னிட்டு, கடவுள் அவருக்குச் செவிசாய்த்தார். அவர் இறைமகனாய் இருந்தும், துன்பங்கள் வழியே கீழ்ப்படிதலைக் கற்றுக்கொண்டார். அவர் நிறைவுள்ளவராகி, தமக்குக் கீழ்ப்படிவோர் அனைவரும் என்றென்றும் மீட்படையக் காரணமானார்.

கிறிஸ்து சாவை ஏற்கும் அளவுக்கு, அதுவும் சிலுவைச் சாவையே ஏற்கும் அளவுக்குக் கீழ்ப்படிந்து தம்மையே தாழ்த்திக்கொண்டார். எனவே கடவுளும் அவரை மிகவே உயர்த்தி, எப்பெயருக்கும் மேலான பெயரை அவருக்கு அருளினார்.
