God can grant even the pagans the repentance that leads to life

A Reading from the Acts of Apostles 11: 1-18 

The apostles and the brothers in Judaea heard that the pagans too had accepted the word of God, and when Peter came up to Jerusalem the Jews criticised him and said, ‘So you have been visiting the uncircumcised and eating with them, have you?’ Peter in reply gave them the details point by point: ‘One day, when I was in the town of Jaffa,’ he began ‘I fell into a trance as I was praying and had a vision of something like a big sheet being let down from heaven by its four corners. This sheet reached the ground quite close to me. I watched it intently and saw all sorts of animals and wild beasts – everything possible that could walk, crawl or fly. Then I heard a voice that said to me, “Now, Peter; kill and eat!” But I answered: Certainly not, Lord; nothing profane or unclean has ever crossed my lips. And a second time the voice spoke from heaven, “What God has made clean, you have no right to call profane.” This was repeated three times, before the whole of it was drawn up to heaven again.

  ‘Just at that moment, three men stopped outside the house where we were staying; they had been sent from Caesarea to fetch me, and the Spirit told me to have no hesitation about going back with them. The six brothers here came with me as well, and we entered the man’s house. He told us he had seen an angel standing in his house who said, “Send to Jaffa and fetch Simon known as Peter; he has a message for you that will save you and your entire household.”

  ‘I had scarcely begun to speak when the Holy Spirit came down on them in the same way as it came on us at the beginning, and I remembered that the Lord had said, “John baptised with water, but you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.” I realised then that God was giving them the identical thing he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ; and who was I to stand in God’s way?’

  This account satisfied them, and they gave glory to God. ‘God’ they said ‘can evidently grant even the pagans the repentance that leads to life.’

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு கூறியது: “என் ஆடுகள் எனது குரலுக்குச் செவிசாய்க்கின்றன. எனக்கும் அவற்றைத் தெரியும். அவையும் என்னைப் பின்தொடர்கின்றன. நான் அவற்றிற்கு நிலைவாழ்வை அளிக்கிறேன். அவை என்றுமே அழியா. அவற்றை எனது கையிலிருந்து யாரும் பறித்துக்கொள்ள மாட்டார். அவற்றை எனக்கு அளித்த என் தந்தை அனைவரையும்விடப் பெரியவர். அவற்றை என் தந்தையின் கையிலிருந்து யாரும் பறித்துக்கொள்ள இயலாது. நானும் தந்தையும் ஒன்றாய் இருக்கிறோம்.”

திருத்தூதர் யோவான் எழுதிய திருவெளிப்பாட்டிலிருந்து வாசகம் 7: 9, 14b-17

யோவான் நான் யாராலும் எண்ணிக்கையிட முடியாத பெரும் திரளான மக்களைக் கண்டேன். அவர்கள் எல்லா நாட்டையும், குலத்தையும் மக்களினத்தையும் மொழியையும் சார்ந்தவர்கள்; அரியணைக்கும் ஆட்டுக்குட்டிக்கும் முன்பாக நின்றுகொண்டிருந்தார்கள்; வெண்மையான தொங்கலாடை அணிந்தவர்களாய்க் கையில் குருத்தோலைகளைப் பிடித்திருந்தார்கள்.

மூப்பர்களுள் ஒருவர் என்னிடம் கூறியது: “இவர்கள் கொடிய வேதனையிலிருந்து மீண்டவர்கள்; தங்களின் தொங்கலாடைகளை ஆட்டுக்குட்டியின் இரத்தத்தில் துவைத்து வெண்மையாக்கிக் கொண்டவர்கள். இதனால்தான் கடவுளது அரியணைமுன் நின்று கொண்டு அவரது கோவிலில் அல்லும் பகலும் அவரை வழிபட்டு வருகிறார்கள்; அரியணையில் வீற்றிருப்பவர் அவர்களிடையே குடிகொண்டு அவர்களைப் பாதுகாப்பார். இனி அவர்களுக்குப் பசியோ தாகமோ இரா; கதிரவனோ எவ்வகை வெப்பமோ அவர்களைத் தாக்கா. ஏனெனில் அரியணை நடுவில் இருக்கும் ஆட்டுக்குட்டி அவர்களை மேய்க்கும்; வாழ்வு அளிக்கும் நீரூற்றுகளுக்கு வழிநடத்திச் செல்லும். கடவுள் அவர்களின் கண்ணீர் அனைத்தையும் துடைத்துவிடுவார்.”

அந்நாள்களில்

பவுலும் பர்னபாவும் பெருகையிலிருந்து புறப்பட்டுச் சென்று பிசிதியாவிலுள்ள அந்தியோக்கியாவை அடைந்தார்கள். ஓய்வு நாளன்று அவர்கள் தொழுகைக்கூடத்திற்குச் சென்று அங்கு அமர்ந்திருந்தார்கள். தொழுகைக் கூடத்தில் இருந்தோர் கலைந்து சென்றபோது பல யூதர்களும் யூதம் தழுவிக் கடவுளை வழிபட்டவர்களும் பவுலையும் பர்னபாவையும் பின்தொடர்ந்தார்கள். இவ்விருவரும் அவர்களோடு பேசிக் கடவுளின் அருளில் நிலைத்திருக்கும்படி அவர்களைத் தூண்டினர்.

அடுத்து வந்த ஓய்வுநாளில் ஆண்டவரின் வார்த்தையைக் கேட்க ஏறக்குறைய நகரத்தார் அனைவரும் கூடிவந்தனர். மக்கள் திரளைக் கண்ட யூதர்கள் பொறாமையால் நிறைந்து, பவுல் கூறியதை எதிர்த்துப் பேசி அவரைப் பழித்துரைத்தார்கள். பவுலும் பர்னபாவும் துணிவுடன், “கடவுளின் வார்த்தையை உங்களுக்குத்தான் முதலில் அறிவிக்க வேண்டியிருந்தது. ஆனால் நீங்கள் அதனை உதறித்தள்ளி நிலை வாழ்வுக்குத் தகுதியற்றவர்கள் என்று உங்களுக்கு நீங்களே தீர்ப்பளித்துக் கொண்டீர்கள். எனவே நாங்கள் பிற இனத்தாரிடம் செல்லுகிறோம். ஏனென்றால், ‘உலகம் முழுவதும் என் மீட்பை அடைவதற்கு நான் உன்னை வேற்றினத்தார்க்கு ஒளியாக ஏற்படுத்துவேன்’ என்று ஆண்டவர் எங்களுக்குக் கட்டளையிட்டுள்ளார்” என்று எடுத்துக் கூறினார்கள்.

இதைக் கேட்ட பிற இனத்தார் மகிழ்ச்சியடைந்தனர்; ஆண்டவரின் வார்த்தையைப் போற்றிப் புகழ்ந்தனர். நிலைவாழ்வுக்காகக் குறிக்கப்பட்டோர் அனைவரும் நம்பிக்கை கொண்டனர். அப்பகுதியெங்கும் ஆண்டவரின் வார்த்தை பரவியது. ஆனால் யூதர்கள் கடவுளை வழிபட்டு வந்த மதிப்புக்குரிய பெண்களையும் நகரின் முதன்மைக் குடிமக்களையும் தூண்டிவிட்டு, பவுலையும் பர்னபாவையும் இன்னலுக்குள்ளாக்கி, அவர்களைத் தங்களது நாட்டிலிருந்து துரத்திவிட்டார்கள். அவர்கள் தங்கள் கால்களில் படிந்திருந்த தூசியை அவர்களுக்கு எதிராக உதறிவிட்டு, இக்கோனியாவுக்குச் சென்றார்கள். சீடர்களோ தூய ஆவியால் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டு மகிழ்ச்சியில் திளைத்திருந்தார்கள்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. John 10: 27-30 

Jesus said:

‘The sheep that belong to me listen to my voice;

I know them and they follow me.

I give them eternal life;

they will never be lost

and no one will ever steal them from me.

The Father who gave them to me is greater than anyone,

and no one can steal from the Father.

The Father and I are one.’

A reading from the book of the Apocalypse 7: 9,14-17 

I, John, saw a huge number, impossible to count, of people from every nation, race, tribe and language; they were standing in front of the throne and in front of the Lamb, dressed in white robes and holding palms in their hands. One of the elders said, ‘These are the people who have been through the great persecution, and because they have washed their robes white again in the blood of the Lamb, they now stand in front of God’s throne and serve him day and night in his sanctuary; and the One who sits on the throne will spread his tent over them. They will never hunger or thirst again; neither the sun nor scorching wind will ever plague them, because the Lamb who is at the throne will be their shepherd and will lead them to springs of living water; and God will wipe away all tears from their eyes.’
