'I have many people on my side in this city'

A Reading from the Acts of Apostles  18: 9-18 

At Corinth one night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision, ‘Do not be afraid to speak out, nor allow yourself to be silenced: I am with you. I have so many people on my side in this city that no one will even attempt to hurt you.’ So Paul stayed there preaching the word of God among them for eighteen months.

  But, while Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews made a concerted attack on Paul and brought him before the tribunal. ‘We accuse this man’ they said ‘of persuading people to worship God in a way that breaks the Law.’ Before Paul could open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, ‘Listen, you Jews. If this were a misdemeanour or a crime, I would not hesitate to attend to you; but if it is only quibbles about words and names, and about your own Law, then you must deal with it yourselves – I have no intention of making legal decisions about things like that.’ Then he sent them out of the court, and at once they all turned on Sosthenes, the synagogue president, and beat him in front of the court house. Gallio refused to take any notice at all.

  After staying on for some time, Paul took leave of the brothers and sailed for Syria, accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila. At Cenchreae he had his hair cut off, because of a vow he had made.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தம் சீடரிடம்: “இன்னும் சிறிது காலத்தில் நீங்கள் என்னைக் காணமாட்டீர்கள்; மீண்டும் சிறிது காலத்தில் என்னைக் காண்பீர்கள்” என்றார். அப்போது அவருடைய சீடருள் சிலர், “ ‘இன்னும் சிறிது காலத்தில் நீங்கள் என்னைக் காணமாட்டீர்கள்; மீண்டும் சிறிது காலத்தில் என்னைக் காண்பீர்கள்’ என்றும் ‘நான் தந்தையிடம் செல்கிறேன்’ என்றும் சொல்லுவதன் பொருள் என்ன?” என்று தங்களிடையே பேசிக்கொண்டனர். “இந்தச் ‘சிறிது காலம்’ என்பது என்ன? அவர் பேசுவது நமக்குப் புரியவில்லையே” என்றும் பேசிக்கொண்டனர்.

அவர்கள் தம்மிடம் கேள்வி கேட்க விரும்புவதை அறிந்த இயேசு அவர்களிடம் கூறியது: “ ‘இன்னும் சிறிது காலத்தில் நீங்கள் என்னைக் காணமாட்டீர்கள்; மீண்டும் சிறிது காலத்தில் என்னைக் காண்பீர்கள்’ என்று நான் சொன்னதைப் பற்றி உங்களிடையே சிந்தித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறீர்கள். உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்: நீங்கள் அழுவீர்கள், புலம்புவீர்கள்; அப்போது உலகம் மகிழும். நீங்கள் துயருறுவீர்கள்; ஆனால் உங்கள் துயரம் மகிழ்ச்சியாக மாறும்.”

கொரிந்து நகரில் பவுல் வேலை செய்துவந்தார். ஒவ்வொரு ஓய்வுநாளும் அவர் தொழுகைக்கூடத்தில் பேசினார்.

திருத்தூதர் பணிகள் நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் 18: 1-8

அந்நாள்களில்

பவுல் ஏதென்சை விட்டு கொரிந்துக்குப் போய்ச் சேர்ந்தார். அங்கே போந்துப் பகுதியில் பிறந்த அக்கிலா என்னும் பெயருடைய ஒரு யூதரையும் அவர் மனைவி பிரிஸ்கில்லாவையும் கண்டு அவர்களிடம் சென்றார். அவர்கள், “யூதர் அனைவரும் உரோமை நகரத்தை விட்டு வெளியேற வேண்டும்” என்ற கிலவுதியு பேரரசருடைய கட்டளைக்கு இணங்கி இத்தாலிய நாட்டைவிட்டு அண்மையில் அங்கு வந்திருந்தார்கள். கூடாரம் செய்வது அவர்களது தொழில். தாமும் அதே தொழிலைச் செய்பவராதலால் பவுல் அவர்களிடம் தங்கி வேலை செய்துவந்தார். ஒவ்வொரு ஓய்வுநாளும் அவர் தொழுகைக் கூடத்தில் யூதரிடமும் கிரேக்கரிடமும் பேசி அவர்கள் நம்பிக்கை கொள்ளச் செய்தார்.

சீலாவும் திமொத்தேயுவும் மாசிதோனியாவிலிருந்து வந்தபோது பவுல் இறைவாக்கை அறிவிப்பதில் ஆர்வத்தோடு ஈடுபட்டிருந்தார்; ‘இயேசுவே மெசியா’ என்று யூதரிடம் சான்று பகர்ந்துவந்தார். அவர்கள் அதனை எதிர்த்துப் பழித்துரைத்தபோது அவர் தமது மேலுடையிலிருந்த தூசியை உதறி, “உங்கள் அழிவுக்கு நீங்களே பொறுப்பு, நான் அல்ல. இனிமேல் நான் பிற இனத்தாரிடம் செல்கிறேன்” என்று கூறினார்;

அவ்விடத்தை விட்டுவிட்டுக் கடவுளை வழிபடும் தீத்துயுஸ்து என்னும் பெயருடைய ஒருவரின் வீட்டுக்குப் போனார். அவரது வீடு தொழுகைக்கூடத்தை அடுத்து இருந்தது. தொழுகைக்கூடத் தலைவரான கிறிஸ்பு என்பவர் தம் வீட்டார் அனைவரோடும் ஆண்டவரிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொண்டார். கொரிந்தியருள் பலரும் பவுல் கூறியவற்றைக் கேட்டு நம்பிக்கை கொண்டு திருமுழுக்குப் பெற்றனர்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 16: 16-20 

Jesus said to his disciples:

‘In a short time you will no longer see me,

and then a short time later you will see me again.’

Then some of his disciples said to one another, ‘What does he mean, “In a short time you will no longer see me, and then a short time later you will see me again” and, “I am going to the Father”? What is this “short time”? We do not know what he means.’ Jesus knew that they wanted to question him, so he said, ‘You are asking one another what I meant by saying: In a short time you will no longer see me, and then a short time later you will see me again.

‘I tell you most solemnly,

you will be weeping and wailing

while the world will rejoice;

you will be sorrowful,

but your sorrow will turn to joy.’
