Your only debt should be the debt of mutual love

A reading from the letter of St.Paul to the Romans 13:8-10

Brethren: Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet”, and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbour; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசுவோடு பந்தியில் அமர்ந்தவர்களுள் ஒருவர் இயேசுவிடம், “இறையாட்சி விருந்தில் பங்கு பெறுவோர் பேறுபெற்றோர்” என்றார்.

இயேசு அவரிடம் கூறியது: “ஒருவர் பெரிய விருந்து ஒன்றை ஏற்பாடு செய்து பலரை அழைத்தார். விருந்து நேரம் வரவே அவர் அழைப்புப் பெற்றவர்களிடம் தம் பணியாளரை அனுப்பி, ‘வாருங்கள், எல்லாம் ஏற்கெனவே ஏற்பாடு செய்தாகிவிட்டது’ என்று சொன்னார். அவர்கள் எல்லாரும் ஒருவர் பின் ஒருவராய்ச் சாக்குப்போக்குச் சொல்லத் தொடங்கினர். முதலில் ஒருவர், ‘வயல் ஒன்று வாங்கியிருக்கிறேன்; அதை நான் கட்டாயம் போய்ப் பார்க்க வேண்டும். என்னை மன்னிக்க வேண்டுகிறேன்’ என்றார். ‘நான் ஐந்து ஏர் மாடுகள் வாங்கியிருக்கிறேன்; அவற்றை ஓட்டிப்பார்க்கப் போகிறேன். என்னை மன்னிக்க வேண்டுகிறேன்’ என்றார் வேறொருவர். ‘எனக்கு இப்போதுதான் திருமணம் ஆயிற்று; ஆகையால் என்னால் வர முடியாது’ என்றார் மற்றொருவர்.

பணியாளர் திரும்பி வந்து இவற்றைத் தம் தலைவருக்கு அறிவித்தார். வீட்டு உரிமையாளர் சினமுற்றுத் தம் பணியாளரிடம், ‘நீர் நகரின் வீதிகளுக்கும் சந்துகளுக்கும் விரைந்து சென்று ஏழையர், உடல் ஊனமுற்றோர், பார்வையற்றோர், கால் ஊனமுற்றோர் ஆகியோரை இங்கே கூட்டி வாரும்’ என்றார். பின்பு பணியாளர், ‘தலைவரே, நீர் பணித்தபடி செய்தாயிற்று; இன்னும் இடமிருக்கிறது’ என்றார். தலைவர் தம் பணியாளரை நோக்கி, ‘நீர் வழியோரங்களிலும் நடைபாதைகளிலும் போய், எனது வீடு நிரம்பும் அளவுக்கு மக்களை வற்புறுத்திக் கூட்டி வாரும்.

அழைக்கப் பெற்றவர்களுள் எவரும் என்னுடைய விருந்தைச் சுவைக்கப் போவதில்லை என உமக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்’ “ என்றார்.

நாம் பலராய் இருந்தாலும் கிறிஸ்துவோடு இணைந்திருப்பதால் ஒரே உடலாய் இருக்கிறோம்; ஒருவருக்கொருவர் உடனுறுப்புகளாய் இருக்கிறோம். ஆயினும், நமக்கு அளிக்கப்பட்டுள்ள அருளுக்கேற்ப வெவ்வேறு அருள்கொடைகளைப் பெற்றுள்ளோம். இறைவாக்கு உரைக்கும் கொடையை நாம் பெற்றிருந்தால் நாம் கொண்டிருக்கும் நம்பிக்கைக்கு ஏற்றவாறு அதைப் பயன்படுத்த வேண்டும். தொண்டாற்றும் கொடையை நாம் பெற்றிருந்தால் அதைத் தொண்டு புரிவதற்குப் பயன்படுத்த வேண்டும். கற்றுக்கொடுப்போர் கற்றுக்கொடுப்பதிலும், ஊக்கமூட்டுவோர் ஊக்கம் தருவதிலும், தமக்குள்ளதை வழங்குவோர் தாராளமாய்க் கொடுப்பதிலும், தலைமை தாங்குவோர் முழு ஆர்வத்தோடு செயல்படுவதிலும், இரக்கச் செயல்களில் ஈடுபடுவோர் முக மலர்ச்சியோடு அவற்றைச் செய்வதிலும் தாம் பெற்ற அருள் கொடைகளைப் பயன்படுத்த வேண்டும்.

உங்கள் அன்பு கள்ளமற்றதாய் இருப்பதாக! தீமையை வெறுத்து நன்மையையே பற்றிக்கொள்ளுங்கள். உடன் பிறப்புகள் போன்று ஒருவருக்கொருவர் உளங்கனிந்த அன்பு காட்டுங்கள்; பிறர் உங்களை விட மதிப்புக்கு உரியவரென எண்ணுங்கள். விடாமுயற்சியோடும் ஆர்வம் மிக்க உள்ளத்தோடும் ஆண்டவருக்குப் பணிபுரியுங்கள். எதிர் நோக்கி இருப்பதில் மகிழ்ச்சி கொள்ளுங்கள்; துன்பத்தில் தளரா மனத்துடன் இருங்கள்; இறைவேண்டலில் நிலைத்திருங்கள். வறுமையுற்ற இறைமக்களோடு உங்களிடம் உள்ளதைப் பகிர்ந்து கொள்ளுங்கள்; விருந்தோம்பலில் கருத்தாய் இருங்கள்.

உங்களைத் துன்புறுத்துவோருக்கு ஆசி கூறுங்கள்; ஆம், ஆசி கூறுங்கள்; சபிக்க வேண்டாம். மகிழ்வாரோடு மகிழுங்கள்; அழுவாரோடு அழுங்கள். நீங்கள் ஒரு மனத்தவராய் இருங்கள்; உயர்வு மனப்பான்மை கொள்ளாமல் தாழ்நிலையில் உள்ளவர்களோடு நன்கு பழகுங்கள்.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 14: 15-24

At that time: One of those who reclined at table with Jesus said to him, “Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!” But he said to him, “A man once gave a great banquet and invited many. And at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. Please excuse me.’ And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to examine them. Please excuse me.’ And another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ So the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’ And the servant said, ‘Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’ And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.’”

Use the gifts you have been given

A reading from the letter of St.Paul to the Romans 12:5-16 

Brethren: We, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honour. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another.
