The Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords

A reading from the book of Deuteronomy 10:12-22 

Moses said to the people:

  ‘Now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you? Only this: to fear the Lord your God, to follow all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul, to keep the commandments and laws of the Lord that for your good I lay down for you today.

  ‘To the Lord your God belong indeed heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth and all it contains; yet it was on your fathers that the Lord set his heart for love of them, and after them of all the nations chose their descendants, you yourselves, up to the present day. Circumcise your heart then and be obstinate no longer; for the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, triumphant and terrible, never partial, never to be bribed. It is he who sees justice done for the orphan and the widow, who loves the stranger and gives him food and clothing. Love the stranger then, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. It is the Lord your God you must fear and serve; you must cling to him; in his name take your oaths. He it is you must praise, he is your God: for you he has done these great and terrible things you have seen with your own eyes; and though your fathers numbered only seventy when they went down to Egypt, the Lord your God has made you as many as the stars of heaven.’

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு கூட்டத்தினரை அவ்விடத்திலிருந்து அனுப்பிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். அப்பொழுது சீடரையும் உடனே படகேறித் தமக்கு முன் அக்கரைக்குச் செல்லுமாறு அவர் கட்டாயப்படுத்தினார். மக்களை அனுப்பிவிட்டு, அவர் தனியே இறைவனிடம் வேண்டுவதற்காக ஒரு மலையின் மேல் ஏறினார். பொழுது சாய்ந்த பிறகும் அங்கே அவர் தனியே இருந்தார். அதற்குள் படகு கரையிலிருந்து நெடுந்தொலை சென்றுவிட்டது. மேலும் எதிர்க்காற்று அடித்துக் கொண்டிருந்ததால் அலைகளால் படகு அலைக்கழிக்கப்பட்டது. இரவின் நான்காம் காவல் வேளையில் இயேசு அவர்களை நோக்கிக் கடல்மீது நடந்து வந்தார். அவர் கடல்மீது நடப்பதைக் கண்ட சீடர் கலங்கி, “ஐயோ, பேய்” என அச்சத்தினால் அலறினர். உடனே இயேசு அவர்களிடம் பேசினார். “துணிவோடிருங்கள்; நான்தான், அஞ்சாதீர்கள்” என்றார்.

பேதுரு அவருக்கு மறுமொழியாக, “ஆண்டவரே, நீர்தாம் என்றால் நானும் கடல்மீது நடந்து உம்மிடம் வர ஆணையிடும்” என்றார். அவர், “வா” என்றார். பேதுருவும் படகிலிருந்து இறங்கி, இயேசுவை நோக்கிக் கடல்மீது நடந்து சென்றார். அப்பொழுது பெருங்காற்று வீசியதைக் கண்டு அஞ்சி அவர் மூழ்கும்போது, “ஆண்டவரே, என்னைக் காப்பாற்றும்” என்று கத்தினார். இயேசு உடனே தம் கையை நீட்டி அவரைப் பிடித்து, “நம்பிக்கை குன்றியவனே, ஏன் ஐயம் கொண்டாய்?” என்றார். அவர்கள் படகில் ஏறியதும் காற்று அடங்கியது. படகில் இருந்தோர் இயேசுவைப் பணிந்து, “உண்மையாகவே நீர் இறைமகன்” என்றனர்.

ஆண்டவரின் அருள்வாக்கு.

என் சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளுக்கு மீட்பு கிடைப்பதற்காக நான் கிறிஸ்துவைப் பிரிந்து சாபத்துக்கு உள்ளாகக்கூட விரும்பியிருப்பேன்.

திருத்தூதர் பவுல் உரோமையருக்கு எழுதிய திருமுகத்திலிருந்து வாசகம் 9: 1-5

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

கிறிஸ்துவைச் சார்ந்த நான் சொல்வது உண்மை, பொய்யல்ல. தூய ஆவியால் தூண்டப்படும் என் மனச்சான்றே நான் சொல்வதற்குச் சாட்சி. உள்ளத்தில் எனக்குப் பெருந்துயரமும் இடைவிடாத வேதனையும் உண்டு.

என் சொந்த இனத்தைச் சேர்ந்த என் சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளுக்கு மீட்பு கிடைப்பதற்காக நான் கிறிஸ்துவைப் பிரிந்து சாபத்துக்கு உள்ளாகக்கூட விரும்பியிருப்பேன். அவர்கள்தாம் இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள்; அவர்களையே கடவுள் தம் மக்களாக ஏற்றுக்கொண்டார். அவர்கள் நடுவில்தான் கடவுள் தம் மாட்சியை விளங்கச் செய்தார். உடன்படிக்கைகளும் திருச்சட்டமும் திருவழிபாடும் வாக்குறுதிகளும் அவர்களிடமே ஒப்படைக்கப்பட்டன. குலமுதல்வர்களின் வழிவந்தவர்கள் அவர்கள்; மனிதர் என்னும் முறையில் கிறிஸ்துவும் அவர்களிடமிருந்தே தோன்றினார். இவரே எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் மேலான கடவுள்; என்றென்றும் போற்றுதற்குரியவர். ஆமென்.

அந்நாள்களில்

எலியா ஓரேபு என்ற கடவுளின் மலையை அடைந்தபின் அங்கிருந்த குகைக்கு வந்து, அதில் இரவைக் கழித்தார். அப்போது ஆண்டவர், “வெளியே வா; மலைமேல் என் திருமுன் வந்து நில். இதோ! ஆண்டவராகிய நான் கடந்து செல்ல இருக்கிறேன்” என்றார்.

உடனே ஆண்டவர் திருமுன் பெரும் சுழற்காற்று எழுந்து மலைகளைப் பிளந்து பாறைகளைச் சிதறடித்தது. ஆனால் ஆண்டவர் அந்தக் காற்றில் இல்லை. காற்றுக்குப் பின் நிலநடுக்கம் ஏற்பட்டது. நிலநடுக்கத்திலும் ஆண்டவர் இருக்கவில்லை. நிலநடுக்கத்திற்குப் பின் தீ கிளம்பிற்று. தீயிலும் ஆண்டவர் இருக்கவில்லை. தீக்குப்பின் அடக்கமான மெல்லிய ஒலி கேட்டது. அதை எலியா கேட்டவுடன் போர்வையினால் தம் முகத்தை மூடிக்கொண்டு வெளியே வந்து குகையின் வாயிலில் நின்றார்.

Jesus walks on the water

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 14:22-33 

Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he would send the crowds away. After sending the crowds away he went up into the hills by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, while the boat, by now far out on the lake, was battling with a heavy sea, for there was a head-wind. In the fourth watch of the night he went towards them, walking on the lake, and when the disciples saw him walking on the lake they were terrified. ‘It is a ghost’ they said, and cried out in fear. But at once Jesus called out to them, saying, ‘Courage! It is I! Do not be afraid.’ It was Peter who answered. ‘Lord,’ he said ‘if it is you, tell me to come to you across the water.’ ‘Come’ said Jesus. Then Peter got out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus across the water, but as soon as he felt the force of the wind, he took fright and began to sink. ‘Lord! Save me!’ he cried. Jesus put out his hand at once and held him. ‘Man of little faith,’ he said ‘why did you doubt?’ And as they got into the boat the wind dropped. The men in the boat bowed down before him and said, ‘Truly, you are the Son of God.’
