அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தம்மிடம் வருவதைக் கண்ட யோவான், “இதோ! கடவுளின் செம்மறி! செம்மறியாம் இவரே உலகின் பாவத்தைப் போக்குபவர். எனக்குப்பின் வரும் இவர் என்னைவிட முன்னிடம் பெற்றவர்; ஏனெனில் எனக்கு முன்பே இருந்தார் என்று நான் இவரைப்பற்றியே சொன்னேன். இவர் யாரென்று எனக்கும் தெரியாதிருந்தது. ஆனால் இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களுக்கு இவரை வெளிப்படுத்தும் பொருட்டே நான் வந்துள்ளேன்; தண்ணீரால் திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுத்தும் வருகிறேன்” என்றார்.

தொடர்ந்து யோவான் சான்றாகக் கூறியது: “தூய ஆவி புறாவைப் போல வானிலிருந்து இறங்கி இவர்மீது இருந்ததைக் கண்டேன். இவர் யாரென்று என்குத் தெரியாதிருந்தது. ஆனால் தண்ணீரால் திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுக்கும்படி என்னை அனுப்பியவர் ‘தூய ஆவி இறங்கி யார்மீது இருப்பதைக் காண்பீரோ அவரே தூய ஆவியால் திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுப்பவர்’ என்று என்னிடம் சொல்லியிருந்தார். நானும் கண்டேன்; இவரே இறைமகன் எனச் சான்றும் கூறி வருகிறேன்.”

அன்பிற்குரியவர்களே,

இறைவன் நேர்மையாளர் என நீங்கள் அறிந்துகொண்டால், நேர்மையாகச் செயல்படுவோர் அனைவரும் அவரிடமிருந்து பிறந்தவர்கள் என்பதைப் புரிந்துகொள்வீர்கள்.

நம் தந்தை நம்மிடம் எத்துணை அன்பு கொண்டுள்ளார் என்று பாருங்கள். நாம் கடவுளின் மக்களென அழைக்கப்படுகிறோம்; கடவுளின் மக்களாகவே இருக்கிறோம். உலகம் அவரை அறிந்துகொள்ளாததால்தான் நம்மையும் அறிந்துகொள்ளவில்லை. என் அன்பார்ந்தவர்களே, இப்போது நாம் கடவுளின் பிள்ளைகளாய் இருக்கிறோம். இனி எத்தன்மையராய் இருப்போம் என்பது இன்னும் வெளிப்படவில்லை. ஆனால் அவர் தோன்றும்போது நாமும் அவரைப்போல் இருப்போம்; ஏனெனில் அவர் இருப்பதுபோல் அவரைக் காண்போம்.

அவரை எதிர்நோக்கி இருக்கிற அனைவரும் அவர் தூயவராய் இருப்பதுபோல் தம்மையே தூயவராக்க வேண்டும். பாவம் செய்யும் அனைவரும் சட்டத்தை மீறுகின்றனர். சட்டத்தை மீறுவதே பாவம்.

பாவங்களை நீக்கவே அவர் தோன்றினார் என்பது உங்களுக்குத் தெரியும். அவரிடம் பாவம் இல்லை. அவரோடு இணைந்திருக்கும் எவரும் பாவம் செய்வதில்லை. பாவம் செய்பவர் எவரும் அவரைக் கண்டதுமில்லை, அறிந்ததுமில்லை.

The next day John saw Jesus coming towards him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

Everyone must try to be as pure as Christ

A Reading from the First Book of St.John 2:29-3:6 

Beloved:  If you know that God is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practises righteousness has been born of him. See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practises lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.
