அக்காலத்தில்

எருசலேமிலுள்ள யூதர்கள் குருக்களையும் லேவியர்களையும் யோவானிடம் அனுப்பி, “நீர் யார்?” என்று கேட்டபோது அவர், “நான் மெசியா அல்ல” என்று அறிவித்தார். இதை அவர் வெளிப்படையாகக் கூறி, மறுக்காமல் ஒப்புக்கொண்டார். அப்போது, “அப்படியானால் நீர் யார்? நீர் எலியாவா?” என்று அவர்கள் கேட்க, அவர், “நானல்ல” என்றார் “நீர் தாம் வர வேண்டிய இறைவாக்கினரா?” என்று கேட்டபோதும், அவர், “இல்லை” என்று மறுமொழி கூறினார். அவர்கள் அவரிடம், “நீர் யார்? எங்களை அனுப்பியவர்களிடம் நாங்கள் மறுமொழி சொல்லியாக வேண்டும்; எனவே உம்மைப்பற்றி என்ன சொல்கிறீர்?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். அதற்கு அவர், “‘ஆண்டவருக்காக வழியைச் செம்மையாக்குங்கள் எனப் பாலைநிலத்தில் குரல் ஒன்று கேட்கிறது’ என்று இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயா உரைத்தது என்னைப்பற்றியே” என்றார்.

பரிசேயரால் அனுப்பப்பட்ட அவர்கள் அவரிடம், “நீர் மெசியாவோ எலியாவோ வர வேண்டிய இறைவாக்கினரோ அல்லவென்றால் ஏன் திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுக்கிறீர்?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். யோவான் அவர்களிடம், “நான் தண்ணீரால் திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுக்கிறேன். நீங்கள் அறியாத ஒருவர் உங்களிடையே நிற்கிறார்; அவர் எனக்குப்பின் வருபவர்; அவருடைய மிதியடிவாரை அவிழ்க்கக்கூட எனக்குத் தகுதியில்லை” என்றார். இவை யாவும் யோர்தான் ஆற்றுக்கு அக்கரையிலுள்ள பெத்தானியாவில் நிகழ்ந்தன. அங்குதான் யோவான் திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.

அன்பிற்குரியவர்களே,

இயேசு ‘மெசியா’ அல்ல என்று மறுப்போரைத் தவிர வேறு யார் பொய்யர்? தந்தையையும் மகனையும் மறுப்போர்தாம் எதிர்க் கிறிஸ்துகள். மகனை மறுதலிப்போர் தந்தையை ஏற்றுக்கொள்வதில்லை; மகனை ஏற்று அறிக்கையிடுவோர் தந்தையையும் ஏற்றுக்கொள்கின்றனர்.

தொடக்கத்திலிருந்து நீங்கள் கேட்டறிந்தது உங்களுள் நிலைத்திருக்கட்டும்; தொடக்கத்திலிருந்து நீங்கள் கேட்டறிந்தது உங்களுள் நிலைத்திருந்தால் நீங்கள் மகனுடனும் தந்தையுடனும் இணைந்திருப்பீர்கள். அவரே நமக்கு வாக்குறுதி அளித்துள்ளார். அவ்வாக்குறுதி நிலைவாழ்வு பற்றியதாகும்.

உங்களை ஏமாற்றுகிறவர்களை மனத்தில் கொண்டு இவற்றை உங்களுக்கு எழுதியுள்ளேன். நீங்கள் அவரிடமிருந்து பெற்றுக்கொண்ட அருள் பொழிவு உங்களுள் நிலைத்திருக்கிறது. அதனால் உங்களுக்கு எவரும் கற்பிக்க வேண்டிய தேவையில்லை. மாறாக, நீங்கள் அவரிடமிருந்து பெற்றுக்கொண்ட அருள்பொழிவால் அனைத்தையும் கற்றுக்கொள்கிறீர்கள். அவ்வருள்பொழிவு உண்மையானது; பொய்யானது அல்ல. நீங்கள் கற்றுக்கொண்டதற்கேற்ப அவரோடு இணைந்து வாழுங்கள்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 1:19-28 

This is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord’, as the prophet Isaiah said.” (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

A Reading from the First Letter of St.John 2:22-28 

Beloved: Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life. I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie— just as it has taught you, abide in him. And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming.
