அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு படகில் ஏறவே, அவருடைய சீடர்களும் அவரோடு ஏறினார்கள். திடீரெனக் கடலில் பெருங் கொந்தளிப்பு ஏற்பட்டது. படகுக்குமேல் அலைகள் எழுந்தன. ஆனால் இயேசு தூங்கிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். சீடர்கள் அவரிடம் வந்து, “ஆண்டவரே, காப்பாற்றும், சாகப் போகிறோம்” என்று சொல்லி அவரை எழுப்பினார்கள்.

இயேசு அவர்களை நோக்கி, “நம்பிக்கை குன்றியவர்களே, ஏன் அஞ்சுகிறீர்கள்?” என்று கேட்டு, எழுந்து காற்றையும் கடலையும் கடிந்து கொண்டார். உடனே மிகுந்த அமைதி உண்டாயிற்று.

மக்கள் எல்லாரும், “காற்றும் கடலும் இவருக்குக் கீழ்ப்படிகின்றனவே! இவர் எத்தகையவரோ?” என்று வியந்தனர்.

அந்நாள்களில்

பொழுது விடியும் வேளையில் தூதர்கள் லோத்தை நோக்கி, “நீ எழுந்திரு! உன் மனைவியையும், உன் இரு புதல்வியரையும் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு போ! இல்லையேல், இந்நகரின் தண்டனைத் தீர்ப்பில் நீயும் அகப்பட்டு அழிவாய்” என்று வற்புறுத்திக் கூறினார்கள். அவர் காலந்தாழ்த்தினார்.

ஆண்டவர் அவர் மீது இரக்கம் வைத்திருந்ததால், அந்த மனிதர்கள் அவரது கையையும், அவர் மனைவியின் கையையும், அவர் இரு புதல்வியர் கையையும் பிடித்துக் கொண்டுபோய் நகருக்கு வெளியே விட்டார்கள். அவர்களை வெளியே அழைத்து வந்தவுடன் அந்த மனிதர்கள் அவரை நோக்கி, “நீ உயிர் தப்புமாறு ஓடிப்போ; திரும்பிப் பார்க்காதே; சமவெளி எங்கேயும் தங்காதே; மலையை நோக்கித் தப்பி ஓடு; இல்லையேல் அழிந்து போவாய்” என்றார்கள். லோத்து அவர்களை நோக்கி: “என் தலைவர்களே, வேண்டாம். உங்கள் அடியானுக்கு உங்கள் பார்வையில் இரக்கம் கிடைத்துள்ளது. என் உயிரைக் காக்கும் பொருட்டு நீர் காட்டிய பேரன்பு உயர்ந்தது. ஆயினும் மலையை நோக்கித் தப்பியோட என்னால் இயலாது. ஓடினால் தீங்கு ஏற்பட்டு, நான் செத்துப் போவேன். எனவே, நான் தப்பியோடிச் சேர்வதற்கு வசதியாக, இதோ ஒரு நகர் அருகிலுள்ளது. அது சிறியதாய் இருக்கிறது. அதற்குள் ஓடிப்போக விடுங்கள். அது சிறிய நகர் தானே? நானும் உயிர் பிழைப்பேன்” என்றார்.

அதற்கு தூதர் ஒருவர், “நல்லது, அப்படியே ஆகட்டும். இக்காரியத்திலும் உனக்குக் கருணை காட்டியுள்ளேன். நீ கேட்டபடி அந்நகரை நான்அழிக்க மாட்டேன். நீ அங்கு விரைந்தோடித் தப்பித்துக் கொள். நீ அங்குச் சென்று சேருமட்டும் என்னால் ஒன்றும் செய்ய இயலாது” என்றார். இதனால் அந்த நகருக்குச் “சோவார்” என்னும் பெயர் வழங்கிற்று.

லோத்து சோவாரை அடைந்தபோது கதிரவன் மண்ணுலகின் மேல் உதித்திருந்தான். அப்பொழுது ஆண்டவர் வானத்திலிருந்து சோதோம், கொமோரா நகர்களின்மேல் கந்தகமும் நெருப்பும் பொழியச் செய்தார். அந்நகரங்களையும் அவற்றைச் சுற்றியிருந்த சமவெளி முழுவதையும் அழித்தார். நகர்களில் வாழ்ந்த அனைவரையும், நிலத்தில் தளிர்த்தனவற்றையும் அழித்தார். அப்பொழுது லோத்தின் மனைவி திரும்பிப் பார்த்தாள். உடனே உப்புத் தூணாக மாறினாள்.

ஆபிரகாம் காலையில் எழுந்திருந்து, தாம் ஏற்கெனவே ஆண்டவர் திருமுன் நின்ற இடத்திற்குப் போனார். அவர் சோதோமையும் கொமோராவையும் சூழ்ந்திருந்த நிலப்பகுதியையும் நோக்கிப் பார்த்தபோது சூளையின் புகைபோல நிலப்பரப்பிலிருந்து புகை கிளம்பக் கண்டார்.

கடவுள் சமவெளி நகர்களை அழித்தபோது, ஆபிரகாமை நினைவு கூர்ந்தார். எனவே லோத்து குடியிருந்த நகர்களை அழித்தபோது கடவுள் அவரைக் காப்பாற்றினார்.

Jesus got into the boat followed by his disciples. Without warning a storm broke over the lake, so violent that the waves were breaking right over the boat. But he was asleep. So they went to him and woke him saying, ‘Save us, Lord, we are going down!’ And he said to them, ‘Why are you so frightened, you men of little faith?’ And with that he stood up and rebuked the winds and the sea; and all was calm again. The men were astounded and said, ‘Whatever kind of man is this? Even the winds and the sea obey him.’

A Reading from the Book of Genesis 19: 15-29 

The angels urged Lot, ‘Come, take your wife and these two daughters of yours, or you will be overwhelmed in the punishment of the town.’ And as he hesitated, the men took him by the hand, and his wife and his two daughters, because of the pity the Lord felt for him. They led him out and left him outside the town.

  As they were leading him out he said, ‘Run for your life. Neither look behind you nor stop anywhere on the plain. Make for the hills if you would not be overwhelmed.’ ‘No, I beg you, my lord,’ Lot said to them ‘your servant has won your favour and you have shown great kindness to me in saving my life. But I could not reach the hills before this calamity overtook me, and death with it. The town over there is near enough to flee to, and is a little one. Let me make for that – is it not little? – and my life will be saved.’ He answered, ‘I grant you this favour too, and will not destroy the town you speak of. Hurry, escape to it, for I can do nothing until you reach it.’ That is why the town is named Zoar.

  As the sun rose over the land and Lot entered Zoar, the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord. He overthrew these towns and the whole plain, with all the inhabitants of the towns, and everything that grew there. But the wife of Lot looked back, and was turned into a pillar of salt.

  Rising early in the morning Abraham went to the place where he had stood before the Lord, and looking towards Sodom and Gomorrah, and across all the plain, he saw the smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace.

  Thus it was that when God destroyed the towns of the plain, he kept Abraham in mind and rescued Lot out of disaster when he overwhelmed the towns where Lot lived.

இயேசு திரளான மக்கள் தம்மைச் சூழ்ந்திருப்பதைக் கண்டு, மறு கரைக்குச் செல்ல சீடர்களுக்குக் கட்டளையிட்டார். அப்பொழுது மறைநூல் அறிஞர் ஒருவர் வந்து, “போதகரே, நீர் எங்கே சென்றாலும் நானும் உம்மைப் பின்பற்றுவேன்” என்றார். இயேசு அவரிடம், “நரிகளுக்குப் பதுங்குக் குழிகளும், வானத்துப் பறவைகளுக்குக் கூடுகளும் உண்டு. மானிட மகனுக்கோ தலை சாய்க்கக்கூட இடமில்லை” என்றார்.

இயேசுவின் சீடருள் மற்றொருவர் அவரை நோக்கி, “ஐயா, முதலில் நான் போய் என் தந்தையை அடக்கம் செய்துவிட்டு வர அனுமதியும்” என்றார். இயேசு அவரைப் பார்த்து, நீர் என்னைப் பின்பற்றி வாரும். இறந்தோரைப் பற்றிக் கவலை வேண்டாம். அவர்கள் அடக்கம் செய்யப்படுவார்கள்” என்றார்.

தொடக்க நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் 18: 16-33

மூன்று மனிதர்களும் எழுந்து, சோதோமை நோக்கிச் சென்றார்கள். ஆபிரகாமும் உடன்சென்று அவர்களை வழியனுப்பினார்.

அப்பொழுது ஆண்டவர், “நான் செய்ய இருப்பதை ஆபிரகாமிடமிருந்து மறைப்பேனா? ஆபிரகாமிடமிருந்தே வலிமைமிக்க மாபெரும் இனம் தோன்றும். அவன் மூலம் மண்ணுலகின் எல்லா இனத்தாரும் ஆசி பெற்றுக் கொள்வர். ஏனெனில், நீதி, நேர்மை வழி நின்று எனக்குக் கீழ்ப்படியும்படி தன் புதல்வருக்கும், தனக்குப்பின் தன் வழிமரபினருக்கும் கற்றுத்தருமாறு ஆண்டவராகிய நான் ஆபிரகாமுக்கு வாக்களித்ததை அவன் நிறைவேற்றுவான்” என்று தமக்குள் சொல்லிக் கொண்டார்.

ஆதலால் ஆண்டவர் ஆபிரகாமை நோக்கி, “சோதோம் கொமோராவுக்கு எதிராகப் பெரும் கண்டனக் குரல் எழும்பியுள்ளது. அவற்றின் பாவம் மிகவும் கொடியது. என்னை வந்தடைந்த கண்டனக் குரலின்படி அவர்கள் நடந்து கொண்டார்களா இல்லையா என்று அறிந்து கொள்ள நான் இறங்கிச் சென்று பார்ப்பேன்” என்றார்.

அப்பொழுது அந்த மனிதர்கள் அவ்விடத்தை விட்டுச் சோதோமை நோக்கிச் சென்றார்கள். ஆபிரகாமோ ஆண்டவர் திருமுன் நின்று கொண்டிருந்தார். ஆபிரகாம் அவரை அணுகிக் கூறியதாவது: “தீயவரோடு நீதிமான்களையும் சேர்த்து அழித்து விடுவீரோ? ஒருவேளை நகரில் ஐம்பது நீதிமான்களாவது இருக்கலாம். அப்படியானால் அதிலிருக்கிற ஐம்பது நீதிமான்களை முன்னிட்டாவது அவ்விடத்தைக் காப்பாற்றாமல் அழிப்பீரோ? தீயவனோடு நீதிமானையும் அழிப்பது உமக்கு ஏற்றதன்று; நீதிமானையும் தீயவனையும் சமமாக நடத்துவது உமக்கு உகந்ததன்று. அனைத்துலகிற்கும் நீதி வழங்குபவர் நீதியுடன் தீர்ப்பு வழங்க வேண்டாமோ?” என்றார்.

அதற்கு ஆண்டவர், “நான் சோதோம் நகரில் ஐம்பது நீதிமான்கள் இருப்பதாகக் கண்டால், அவர்களின் பொருட்டு முழுவதையும் காப்பாற்றுவேன்” என்றார்.

அப்பொழுது ஆபிரகாம் மறுமொழியாக, “தூசியும் சாம்பலுமான நான் என் தலைவரோடு பேசத் துணிந்து விட்டேன்; ஒருவேளை அந்த ஐம்பது நீதிமான்களில் ஐந்து பேர் குறைவாயிருக்கலாம். ஐந்து பேர் குறைவதை முன்னிட்டு நகர் முழுவதையும் அழிப்பீரோ?” என்றார். அதற்கு அவர், “நான் நாற்பத்தைந்து பேரை அங்கே கண்டால் அழிக்க மாட்டேன்” என்றார்.

மீண்டும் அவர், உரையாடலைத் தொடர்ந்து, “ஒருவேளை அங்கே நாற்பது பேர் மட்டும் காணப்பட்டால் என்ன செய்வீர்?” என்று கேட்க, ஆண்டவர், “நாற்பது நீதிமான்களின் பொருட்டு அதனை அழிக்க மாட்டேன்” என்றார்.

அப்பொழுது ஆபிரகாம்: “என் தலைவரே, நான் இன்னும் பேச வேண்டும்; சினமடைய வேண்டாம். ஒருவேளை அங்கே முப்பது பேரே காணப்பட்டால்?” என, அவரும் “முப்பது பேர் அங்குக் காணப்பட்டால் அழிக்க மாட்டேன்” என்று பதிலளித்தார். அவர், “என் தலைவரே, உம்மோடு அடியேன் பேசத் துணிந்து விட்டேன். ஒருவேளை அங்கு இருபது பேரே காணப்பட்டால்?” என, அதற்கு அவர், “இருபது பேரை முன்னிட்டு நான் அழிக்க மாட்டேன்” என்றார்.

அதற்கு அவர், “என் தலைவரே, சினமடைய வேண்டாம்; இன்னும் ஒரே ஒரு தடவை மட்டும் என்னைப் பேசவிடும். ஒருவேளை அங்குப் பத்துப் பேர் மட்டும் காணப்பட்டால்?” என, அவர், “அந்தப் பத்துப் பேரை முன்னிட்டு அழிக்க மாட்டேன்” என்றார்.

ஆபிரகாமோடு பேசி முடித்தபின் ஆண்டவர் அவரை விட்டுச் சென்றார். ஆபிரகாமும் தம் இடத்திற்குத் திரும்பிச் சென்றார்.

When Jesus saw the great crowds all about him he gave orders to leave for the other side. One of the scribes then came up and said to him, ‘Master, I will follow you wherever you go.’ Jesus replied, ‘Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.’

  Another man, one of his disciples, said to him, ‘Sir, let me go and bury my father first.’ But Jesus replied, ‘Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their dead.’

From Mamre the men set out and arrived within sight of Sodom, with Abraham accompanying them to show them the way. Now the Lord had wondered, ‘Shall I conceal from Abraham what I am going to do, seeing that Abraham will become a great nation with all the nations of the earth blessing themselves by him? For I have singled him out to command his sons and his household after him to maintain the way of the Lord by just and upright living. In this way the Lord will carry out for Abraham what he has promised him.’

  Then the Lord said, ‘How great an outcry there is against Sodom and Gomorrah! How grievous is their sin! I propose to go down and see whether or not they have done all that is alleged in the outcry against them that has come up to me. I am determined to know.’

  The men left there and went to Sodom while Abraham remained standing before the Lord. Approaching him he said, ‘Are you really going to destroy the just man with the sinner? Perhaps there are fifty just men in the town. Will you really overwhelm them, will you not spare the place for the fifty just men in it? Do not think of doing such a thing: to kill the just man with the sinner, treating just and sinner alike! Do not think of it! Will the judge of the whole earth not administer justice?’ The Lord replied, ‘If at Sodom I find fifty just men in the town, I will spare the whole place because of them.’

  Abraham replied, ‘I am bold indeed to speak like this to my Lord, I who am dust and ashes. But perhaps the fifty just men lack five: will you destroy the whole city for five?’ ‘No,’ he replied ‘I will not destroy it if I find forty-five just men there.’ Again Abraham said to him, ‘Perhaps there will only be forty there.’ ‘I will not do it’ he replied ‘for the sake of the forty.’

  Abraham said, ‘I trust my Lord will not be angry, but give me leave to speak: perhaps there will only be thirty there.’ ‘I will not do it’ he replied ‘if I find thirty there.’ He said, ‘I am bold indeed to speak like this, but perhaps there will only be twenty there.’ ‘I will not destroy it’ he replied ‘for the sake of the twenty.’ He said, ‘I trust my Lord will not be angry if I speak once more: perhaps there will only be ten.’ ‘I will not destroy it’ he replied ‘for the sake of the ten.’

  When he had finished talking to Abraham the Lord went away, and Abraham returned home.

இயேசு, பிலிப்புச் செசரியா பகுதிக்குச் சென்றார். அவர் தம் சீடரை நோக்கி, “மானிடமகன் யாரென்று மக்கள் சொல்கிறார்கள்?” என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு அவர்கள், “சிலர் திருமுழுக்கு யோவான் எனவும் வேறு சிலர் எலியா எனவும் மற்றும் சிலர் எரேமியா அல்லது பிற இறைவாக்கினருள் ஒருவர் என்றும் சொல்கின்றனர்” என்றார்கள். “ஆனால் நீங்கள், நான் யார் எனச் சொல்கிறீர்கள்?” என்று அவர் கேட்டார்.

நான் அறிவித்த செய்தி நிறைவுற்று, அனைத்து நாட்டவரும் அதனைக் கேட்கவேண்டுமென்று ஆண்டவர் என் பக்கம் நின்று எனக்கு வலுவூட்டினார்; சிங்கத்தின் வாயிலிருந்தும் என்னை விடுவித்தார். தீங்கு அனைத்திலிருந்தும் அவர் என்னை விடுவித்துத் தம் விண்ணரசில் சேர்த்து எனக்கு மீட்பளிப்பார். அவருக்கே என்றென்றும் மாட்சி உரித்தாகுக! ஆமென்.

அந்நாள்களில்

ஏரோது அரசன், திருச்சபையைச் சார்ந்த மக்கள் சிலரைப் பிடித்துக் கொடுமைப்படுத்தினான். யோவானின் சகோதரரான யாக்கோபை வாளால் கொன்றான். அது யூதருக்கு மகிழ்ச்சி அளித்ததைக் கண்டு அவன் தொடர்ந்து பேதுருவையும் கைது செய்தான். அது புளிப்பற்ற அப்ப விழா நாள்களில் நடந்தது. அவரைப் பிடித்துச் சிறையில் அடைத்துக் காவல் செய்யுமாறு நான்கு படைவீரர் கொண்ட நான்கு குழுக்களிடம் அவன் ஒப்புவித்தான். பாஸ்கா விழாவுக்குப் பின் மக்கள் முன்பாக அவரது வழக்கை விசாரிக்கலாம் என விரும்பினான். பேதுரு இவ்வாறு சிறையில் காவலில் வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த போது திருச்சபை அவருக்காகக் கடவுளிடம் உருக்கமாக வேண்டியது.

ஏரோது அவரது வழக்கைக் கேட்பதற்கு முந்தின இரவில், பேதுரு படைவீரர் இருவருக்கு இடையே இரு சங்கிலிகளால் கட்டப்பட்டுத் தூங்கிக்கொண்டிருந்தார். காவலர்கள் வாயிலுக்கு முன் சிறையைக் காவல் செய்து கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.

அப்போது ஆண்டவரின் தூதர் அங்கு வந்து நின்றார். அறை ஒளிமயமாகியது. அவர் பேதுருவைத் தட்டியெழுப்பி, “உடனே எழுந்திடும்” என்று கூற, சங்கிலிகள் அவர் கைகளிலிருந்து கீழே விழுந்தன.

வானதூதர் அவரிடம், “இடைக் கச்சையைக் கட்டி மிதியடிகளைப் போட்டுக்கொள்ளும்” என்றார். அவரும் அவ்வாறே செய்தார். தூதர் அவரிடம், “உமது மேலுடையை அணிந்துகொண்டு என்னைப் பின்தொடரும்” என்றார். பேதுரு வானதூதரைப் பின்தொடர்ந்து சென்றார். தூதர் மூலமாக நடந்தவையெல்லாம் உண்மையென்று அவர் உணரவில்லை. ஏதோ காட்சி காண்பதாக அவர் நினைத்துக்கொண்டார். அவர்கள் முதலாம் காவல் நிலையையும், இரண்டாம் காவல் நிலையையும் கடந்து நகருக்குச் செல்லும் இரும்புவாயில் அருகே வந்தபோது அது அவர்களுக்குத் தானாகவே திறந்தது. அவர்கள் வெளியே வந்து ஒரு சந்து வழியாகச் சென்றார்கள். உடனே வானதூதர் அவரை விட்டு அகன்றார்.

பேதுரு தன்னுணர்வு பெற்றபோது, “ஆண்டவர் தம் வானதூதரை அனுப்பி ஏரோதின் கையிலிருந்து என்னை விடுவித்து, யூத மக்கள் எதிர்பார்த்த எதுவும் நிகழாதவாறு என்னைக் காத்தார் என்று நான் உண்மையாகவே அறிந்துகொண்டேன்” என்றார்.

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi he put this question to his disciples, ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say he is John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ ‘But you,’ he said ‘who do you say I am?’ Then Simon Peter spoke up, ‘You are the Christ,’ he said ‘the Son of the living God.’ Jesus replied, ‘Simon son of Jonah, you are a happy man! My life is already being poured away as a libation, and the time has come for me to be gone. I have fought the good fight to the end; I have run the race to the finish; I have kept the faith; all there is to come now is the crown of righteousness reserved for me, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that Day; and not only to me but to all those who have longed for his Appearing.

  The Lord stood by me and gave me power, so that through me the whole message might be proclaimed for all the pagans to hear; and so I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. 'Now I know the Lord really did save me from Herod'

A Reading from the Acts of Apostles 12: 1-11

King Herod started persecuting certain members of the Church. He beheaded James the brother of John, and when he saw that this pleased the Jews he decided to arrest Peter as well. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread, and he put Peter in prison, assigning four squads of four soldiers each to guard him in turns. Herod meant to try Peter in public after the end of Passover week. All the time Peter was under guard the Church prayed to God for him unremittingly.

  On the night before Herod was to try him, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with double chains, while guards kept watch at the main entrance to the prison. Then suddenly the angel of the Lord stood there, and the cell was filled with light. He tapped Peter on the side and woke him. ‘Get up!’ he said ‘Hurry!’ – and the chains fell from his hands. The angel then said, ‘Put on your belt and sandals.’ After he had done this, the angel next said, ‘Wrap your cloak round you and follow me.’ Peter followed him, but had no idea that what the angel did was all happening in reality; he thought he was seeing a vision. They passed through two guard posts one after the other, and reached the iron gate leading to the city. This opened of its own accord; they went through it and had walked the whole length of one street when suddenly the angel left him. It was only then that Peter came to himself. ‘Now I know it is all true’ he said. ‘The Lord really did send his angel and has saved me from Herod and from all that the Jewish people were so certain would happen to me.’

நூற்றுவர் தலைவர் மறுமொழியாக, “ஐயா, நீர் என் வீட்டிற்குள் அடியெடுத்து வைக்க நான் தகுதியற்றவன். ஆனால் ஒரு வார்த்தை மட்டும் சொல்லும்; என் பையன் நலமடைவான். நான் அதிகாரத்துக்கு உட்பட்டவன். என் அதிகாரத்துக்கு உட்பட்ட படைவீரரும் உள்ளனர். நான் அவர்களுள் ஒருவரிடம் ‘செல்க’ என்றால் அவர் செல்கிறார். வேறு ஒருவரிடம் ‘வருக’ என்றால் அவர் வருகிறார். என் பணியாளரைப் பார்த்து ‘இதைச் செய்க’ என்றால் அவர் செய்கிறார்” என்றார்.

இதைக் கேட்டு இயேசு வியந்து, தம்மைப் பின்தொடர்ந்து வந்தவர்களை நோக்கி, “உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்: இஸ்ரயேலர் யாரிடமும் இத்தகைய நம்பிக்கையை நான் கண்டதில்லை. கிழக்கிலும் மேற்கிலுமிருந்து பலர் வந்து ஆபிரகாம், ஈசாக்கு, யாக்கோபு ஆகியோருடன் விண்ணரசின் பந்தியில் அமர்வர். அரசுக்கு உரியவர்களோ புறம்பாக உள்ள இருளில் தள்ளப்படுவார்கள். அங்கே அழுகையும் அங்கலாய்ப்பும் இருக்கும்” என்றார். பின்னர் இயேசு நூற்றுவர் தலைவரை நோக்கி, “நீர் போகலாம், நீர் நம்பியவண்ணமே உமக்கு நிகழும்” என்றார். அந்நேரமே பையன் குணமடைந்தான்.

இயேசு பேதுருவின் வீட்டிற்குள் சென்றபோது, பேதுருவின் மாமியார் காய்ச்சலாய்ப் படுத்திருப்பதைக் கண்டார். இயேசு அவரது கையைத் தொட்டதும் காய்ச்சல் அவரை விட்டு நீங்கிற்று. அவரும் எழுந்து இயேசுவுக்குப் பணிவிடை செய்தார்.

பேய் பிடித்த பலரை மாலை வேளையில் இயேசுவிடம் கொண்டு வந்தனர். அவர் ஒரு வார்த்தை சொல்ல அசுத்த ஆவிகள் ஓடிப்போயின. மேலும் எல்லா நோயாளர்களையும் அவர் குணமாக்கினார். இவ்வாறு, ‘அவர் நம் பிணிகளைத் தாங்கிக்கொண்டார்; நம் துன்பங்களைச் சுமந்துகொண்டார்’ என்று இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயா உரைத்தது நிறைவேறியது.

அவர்களைக் கண்டவுடன் அவர்களைச் சந்திக்க கூடார வாயிலைவிட்டு ஓடினார். அவர்கள் முன் தரை மட்டும் தாழ்ந்து வணங்கி, அவர்களை நோக்கி, “என் தலைவரே, உம் கண்களில் எனக்கு அருள் கிடைத்ததாயின், நீர் உம் அடியானை விட்டுக் கடந்து போகாதிருப்பீராக! இதோ விரைவில் கொஞ்சம் தண்ணீர் கொண்டு வரட்டும். உங்கள் கால்களைக் கழுவியபின், இம்மரத்தடியில் இளைப்பாறுங்கள். கொஞ்சம் உணவு கொண்டு வருகிறேன். நீங்கள் புத்துணர்வு பெற்றபின், பயணத்தைத் தொடருங்கள். ஏனெனில் உங்கள் அடியானிடமே வந்திருக்கிறீர்கள்” என்றார். “நீ சொன்னபடியே செய்” என்று அவர்கள் பதில் அளித்தார்கள்.

அதைக் கேட்டு ஆபிரகாம் தம் கூடாரத்திற்கு விரைந்து சென்று, சாராவை நோக்கி, “விரைவாக மூன்று மரக்கால் நல்ல மாவைப் பிசைந்து, அப்பங்கள் சுடு” என்றார். ஆபிரகாம் மாட்டு மந்தைக்கு ஓடிச் சென்று, ஒரு நல்ல இளங்கன்றைக் கொணர்ந்து வேலைக்காரனிடம் கொடுக்க, அவன் அதனை விரைவில் சமைத்தான். பிறகு அவர் வெண்ணெய், பால், சமைத்த இளங்கன்று ஆகியவற்றைக் கொண்டு வந்து அவர்கள் முன் வைத்தார். அவர்கள் உண்ணும் பொழுது அவர்கள் அருகே மரத்தடியில் நின்று கொண்டிருந்தார்.

பின்பு அவர்கள் அவரை நோக்கி, “ உன் மனைவி சாரா எங்கே?” என்று கேட்க, அவர், “அதோ கூடாரத்தில் இருக்கிறாள்” என்று பதில் கூறினார். அப்பொழுது ஆண்டவர், “நான் இளவேனிற் காலத்தில் உறுதியாக மீண்டும் உன்னிடம் வருவேன். அப்பொழுது உன் மனைவி சாராவுக்கு ஒரு மகன் பிறந்திருப்பான்” என்றார்.

அவருக்குப் பின்புறத்தில் கூடார வாயிலில் சாரா இதைக் கேட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்தார். ஆபிரகாமும் சாராவும் வயது முதிர்ந்தவர்களாய் இருந்தனர். சாராவுக்கு மாதவிடாய் நின்று போயிருந்தது. எனவே, சாரா தமக்குள் சிரித்து, “நானோ கிழவி; என் தலைவரோ வயது முதிர்ந்தவர். எனக்கா இன்பம்?” என்றாள்.

அப்போது ஆண்டவர் ஆபிரகாமை நோக்கி, “ ‘நான் வயது முதிர்ந்தவளாய் இருக்க, எனக்கு உண்மையில் பிள்ளை பிறக்குமா’ என்று சொல்லி சாரா ஏன் இப்படிச் சிரித்தாள்? ஆண்டவரால் ஆகாதது எதுவும் உண்டோ! இளவேனிற் காலத்தில் குறிப்பிட்ட நேரத்தில் நான் உன்னிடம் மீண்டும் வருவேன். அப்பொழுது சாராவுக்கு ஒரு மகன் பிறந்திருப்பான்” என்று சொன்னார்.

சாராவோ, “நான் சிரிக்கவில்லை” என்று சொல்லி மறுத்தார். ஏனெனில் அச்சம் அவரை ஆட்கொண்டது. அதற்கு ஆண்டவர், “இல்லை, நீ சிரித்தாய்” என்றார்.

When Jesus went into Capernaum a centurion came up and pleaded with him. ‘Sir,’ he said ‘my servant is lying at home paralysed, and in great pain.’ ‘I will come myself and cure him’ said Jesus. The centurion replied, ‘Sir, I am not worthy to have you under my roof; just give the word and my servant will be cured. For I am under authority myself, and have soldiers under me; and I say to one man: Go, and he goes; to another: Come here, and he comes; to my servant: Do this, and he does it.’ When Jesus heard this he was astonished and said to those following him, ‘I tell you solemnly, nowhere in Israel have I found faith like this. And I tell you that many will come from east and west to take their places with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob at the feast in the kingdom of heaven; but the subjects of the kingdom will be turned out into the dark, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.’ And to the centurion Jesus said, ‘Go back, then; you have believed, so let this be done for you.’ And the servant was cured at that moment.

  And going into Peter’s house Jesus found Peter’s mother-in-law in bed with fever. He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.

  That evening they brought him many who were possessed by devils. He cast out the spirits with a word and cured all who were sick. This was to fulfil the prophecy of Isaiah:

He took our sicknesses away and carried our diseases for us.

The Lord appeared to Abraham at the Oak of Mamre while he was sitting by the entrance of the tent during the hottest part of the day. He looked up, and there he saw three men standing near him. As soon as he saw them he ran from the entrance of the tent to meet them, and bowed to the ground. ‘My lord,’ he said ‘I beg you, if I find favour with you, kindly do not pass your servant by. A little water shall be brought; you shall wash your feet and lie down under the tree. Let me fetch a little bread and you shall refresh yourselves before going further. That is why you have come in your servant’s direction.’ They replied, ‘Do as you say.’

Abraham hastened to the tent to find Sarah.’ ‘Hurry,’ he said ‘knead three bushels of flour and make loaves.’ Then running to the cattle Abraham took a fine and tender calf and gave it to the servant, who hurried to prepare it. Then taking cream, milk and the calf he had prepared, he laid all before them, and they ate while he remained standing near them under the tree.

‘Where is your wife Sarah?’ they asked him. ‘She is in the tent’ he replied. Then his guest said, ‘I shall visit you again next year without fail, and your wife will then have a son.’ Sarah was listening at the entrance of the tent behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old, well on in years, and Sarah had ceased to have her monthly periods. So Sarah laughed to herself, thinking, ‘Now that I am past the age of child-bearing, and my husband is an old man, is pleasure to come my way again!’ But the Lord asked Abraham, ‘Why did Sarah laugh and say, “Am I really going to have a child now that I am old?” Is anything too wonderful for the Lord? At the same time next year I shall visit you again and Sarah will have a son.’ ‘I did not laugh’ Sarah said, lying because she was afraid. But he replied, ‘Oh yes, you did laugh.’

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

நாம் பெற்றுள்ள தூய ஆவியின் வழியாய்க் கடவுளின் அன்பு நம் உள்ளங்களில் பொழியப்பட்டுள்ளது. நாம் இறைப்பற்று இன்றி வலுவற்று இருந்தபோதே, குறித்த காலம் வந்ததும் கிறிஸ்து நமக்காகத் தம் உயிரைக் கொடுத்தார். நேர்மையாளருக்காக ஒருவர் தம் உயிரைக் கொடுத்தலே அரிது. ஒருவேளை நல்லவர் ஒருவருக்காக யாரேனும் தம் உயிரைக் கொடுக்கத் துணியலாம்.

ஆனால், நாம் பாவிகளாய் இருந்தபோதே கிறிஸ்து நமக்காகத் தம் உயிரைக் கொடுத்தார். இவ்வாறு கடவுள் நம்மீது கொண்டுள்ள தம் அன்பை எடுத்துக்காட்டியுள்ளார். ஆகையால் இப்போது நாம் கிறிஸ்துவின் இரத்தத்தினால் கடவுளுக்கு ஏற்புடையவர்களாகி, அவர் வழியாய்த் தண்டனையிலிருந்து தப்பி மீட்புப் பெறுவோம் என மிக உறுதியாய் நம்பலாம் அன்றோ?

நாம் கடவுளுக்குப் பகைவர்களாயிருந்தும் அவருடைய மகன் நமக்காக உயிரைக் கொடுத்ததால் கடவுளோடு ஒப்புரவாக்கப்பட்டுள்ளோம். அப்படியானால் ஒப்புரவாக்கப்பட்டுள்ள நாம், வாழும் அவர் மகன் வழியாகவே மீட்கப்படுவோம் என மிக உறுதியாய் நம்பலாம் அன்றோ! அதுமட்டும் அல்ல, இப்போது கடவுளோடு நம்மை ஒப்புரவாக்கியுள்ள நம் ஆண்டவர் இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் வழியாய் நாம் கடவுளோடு உறவு கொண்டு பெருமகிழ்ச்சி அடைகிறோம். இம்மகிழ்ச்சியை நமக்குத் தருபவர் கடவுளே.

And when he found it, would he not joyfully take it on his shoulders and then, when he got home, call together his friends and neighbours? “Rejoice with me,” he would say “I have found my sheep that was lost.” In the same way, I tell you, there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one repentant sinner than over ninety-nine virtuous men who have no need of repentance.’

A Reading from the Letter of St.Paul to the Romans 5: 5-11 

The love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit which has been given us. We were still helpless when at his appointed moment Christ died for sinful men. It is not easy to die even for a good man – though of course for someone really worthy, a man might be prepared to die – but what proves that God loves us is that Christ died for us while we were still sinners. Having died to make us righteous, is it likely that he would now fail to save us from God’s anger? When we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, we were still enemies; now that we have been reconciled, surely we may count on being saved by the life of his Son? Not merely because we have been reconciled but because we are filled with joyful trust in God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have already gained our reconciliation.

The Lord God says this: I am going to look after my flock myself and keep all of it in view. As a shepherd keeps all his flock in view when he stands up in the middle of his scattered sheep, so shall I keep my sheep in view. I shall rescue them from wherever they have been scattered during the mist and darkness. I shall bring them out of the countries where they are; I shall gather them together from foreign countries and bring them back to their own land. I shall pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and in every inhabited place in the land. I shall feed them in good pasturage; the high mountains of Israel will be their grazing ground. There they will rest in good grazing ground; they will browse in rich pastures on the mountains of Israel. I myself will pasture my sheep, I myself will show them where to rest – it is the Lord who speaks. I shall look for the lost one, bring back the stray, bandage the wounded and make the weak strong. அந்நாள்களில் ஆபிராமின் மனைவி சாராய்க்கு மகப்பேறு இல்லை. சாராய்க்கு ஆகார் என்ற எகிப்திய பணிப்பெண் ஒருத்தி இருந்தாள். சாராய் ஆபிராமிடம், ``ஆண்டவர் என்னைப் பிள்ளை பெறாதபடி செய்துவிட்டார். நீர் என் பணிப்பெண்ணிடம் உறவு கொள்ளும். ஒருவேளை அவள் எனக்காகப் பிள்ளை பெற்றுத் தரக்கூடும்'' என்றார்.

ஆபிராம் சாராயின் சொல்லைக் கேட்டார். ஆபிராம் கானான் நாட்டில் பத்து ஆண்டுகள் வாழ்ந்த பின், அவர் மனைவி சாராய் எகிப்தியப் பணிப்பெண் ஆகாரைத் தம் கணவருக்கு மனைவியாகக் கொடுத்தார். அவர் ஆகாருடன் உறவு கொண்டபின் அவள் கருவுற்றாள். தான் கருவுற்றிருப்பதைக் கண்டதும் தன் தலைவியை அவள் ஏளனத்துடன் நோக்கினாள்.

அப்பொழுது சாராய் ஆபிராமிடம், ``எனக்கு இழைக்கப்பட்ட தீங்கு உம்மேல் இருக்கட்டும். நீர் தழுவும்படி நானே கொடுத்த என் பணிப்பெண், அவள் கருவுற்றிருக்கிறாள் என்பதைக் கண்டதிலிருந்து என்னை ஏளனமாக நோக்குகிறாள். ஆண்டவரே எனக்கும் உமக்கும் நீதி வழங்கட்டும்'' என்றார். ஆபிராம் சாராயிடம், ``உன் பணிப்பெண் உன் அதிகாரத்தின்கீழ் இருக்கின்றாள். உனக்கு நல்லதாகப் படுவதை அவளுக்குச் செய்'' என்றார். இதற்குப் பின் சாராய் அவளைக் கொடுமைப்படுத்தினார்.

ஆகவே, ஆகார் சாராயிடமிருந்து தப்பி ஓடினாள். ஆண்டவரின் தூதர் அவளைப் பாலைநிலத்தில் இருந்த ஒரு நீரூற்றுக்கு அருகில் கண்டார். அந்த ஊற்று சூருக்குச் செல்லும் வழியில் இருந்தது. அவர் அவளை நோக்கி, ``சாராயின் பணிப்பெண் ஆகார், நீ எங்கிருந்து வருகின்றாய்? எங்கே போகின்றாய்?'' என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு அவள், ``என் தலைவி சாராயிடமிருந்து நான் தப்பி ஓடுகிறேன்'' என்றாள்.

ஆண்டவரின் தூதர் அவளிடம், ``நீ உன் தலைவியிடம் திரும்பிச் சென்று அவளுக்குப் பணிந்து நட'' என்றார். பின்பு ஆண்டவரின் தூதர் அவளிடம், ``உன் வழிமரபினரை யாரும் எண்ண முடியாத அளவுக்குப் பெருகச் செய்வேன்'' என்றார். மீண்டும் ஆண்டவரின் தூதர் அவளிடம், ``இதோ! கருவுற்றிருக்கும் நீ ஒரு மகனைப் பெற்றெடுப்பாய். அவனுக்கு `இஸ்மயேல்' எனப் பெயரிடுவாய். ஏனெனில் உன் துயரத்தில் ஆண்டவர் உனக்குச் செவிசாய்த்தார். ஆனால் அவன் காட்டுக் கழுதை போல் வாழ்பவனாக இருப்பான். எல்லாரையும் அவன் எதிர்ப்பான். எல்லாரும் அவனை எதிர்ப்பார்கள். தன் உறவினருக்கு எதிரியாக அவன் வாழ்வான்'' என்றார்.

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘It is not those who say to me, “Lord, Lord,” who will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the person who does the will of my Father in heaven. When the day comes many will say to me, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, cast out demons in your name, work many miracles in your name?” Then I shall tell them to their faces: I have never known you; away from me, you evil men!

  ‘Therefore, everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on rock. Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew and hurled themselves against that house, and it did not fall: it was founded on rock. But everyone who listens to these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a stupid man who built his house on sand.   Jesus had now finished what he wanted to say, and his teaching made a deep impression on the people because he taught them with authority, and not like their own scribes.

Abram’s wife Sarai had borne him no child, but she had an Egyptian maidservant named Hagar. So Sarai said to Abram, ‘Listen, now! Since the Lord has kept me from having children, go to my slave-girl. Perhaps I shall get children through her.’ Abram agreed to what Sarai had said.

  Thus after Abram had lived in the land of Canaan for ten years Sarai took Hagar her Egyptian slave-girl and gave her to Abram as his wife. He went to Hagar and she conceived. And once she knew she had conceived, her mistress counted for nothing in her eyes. Then Sarai said to Abram, ‘May this insult to me come home to you! It was I who put my slave-girl into your arms but now she knows that she has conceived, I count for nothing in her eyes. Let the Lord judge between me and you.’ ‘Very well,’ Abram said to Sarai ‘your slave-girl is at your disposal. Treat her as you think fit.’ Sarai accordingly treated her so badly that she ran away from her.

  The angel of the Lord met her near a spring in the wilderness, the spring that is on the road to Shur. He said, ‘Hagar, slave-girl of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?’ ‘I am running away from my mistress Sarai’ she replied. The angel of the Lord said to her, ‘Go back to your mistress and submit to her.’ The angel of the Lord said to her, ‘I will make your descendants too numerous to be counted.’ Then the angel of the Lord said to her:

‘Now you have conceived, and you will bear a son,

and you shall name him Ishmael,

for the Lord has heard your cries of distress.

A wild-ass of a man he will be,

setting himself to defy all his brothers.’

Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave to the son that Hagar bore the name Ishmael. Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.

அந்நாள்களில்

ஆண்டவரின் வாக்கு ஆபிராமுக்கு ஒரு காட்சி வழியாக வந்து அறிவித்தது: “ஆபிராம்! அஞ்சாதே. நான் உனக்குக் கேடயமாக இருப்பேன். உனக்குப் பெரும் கைம்மாறு கிடைக்கும்.” அப்பொழுது ஆபிராம், “என் தலைவராகிய ஆண்டவரே, எனக்கு என்னதான் தருவீர்? எனக்கோ குழந்தையே இல்லை! தமஸ்கு நகர் எலியேசர்தான் எனக்குப்பின் என் இல்லத்திற்கு உரிமை மகன் ஆகப்போகிறான்! நீர் எனக்குக் குழந்தை ஒன்றும் தராததால் என் வீட்டு அடிமை மகன் எனக்குப் பின் உரிமையாளன் ஆகப் போகிறான்” என்றார்.

அதற்கு மறுமொழியாக, “இவன் உனக்குப்பின் உரிமையாளன் ஆகமாட்டான். ஆனால், உனக்குப் பிறப்பவனே உனக்குப் பின் உரிமையாளன் ஆவான்” என்று ஆபிராமுக்கு ஆண்டவரின் வாக்கு அருளப்பட்டது. அப்பொழுது ஆண்டவர் ஆபிராமை வெளியே அழைத்து வந்து, “வானத்தை நிமிர்ந்து பார். முடியுமானால், விண்மீன்களை எண்ணிப் பார். இவற்றைப் போலவே உன் வழிமரபினரும் இருப்பர்” என்றார். ஆபிராம் ஆண்டவர்மீது நம்பிக்கை கொண்டார். அதை ஆண்டவர் அவருக்கு நீதியாகக் கருதினார்.

ஆண்டவர் ஆபிராமிடம், “இந்நாட்டை உனக்கு உரிமைச் சொத்தாக அளிக்க உன்னைக் கல்தேயரின் ஊர் என்ற நகரிலிருந்து இங்கு அழைத்து வந்த ஆண்டவர் நானே” என்றார். அதற்கு ஆபிராம், “என் தலைவராகிய ஆண்டவரே, இதை நான் உரிமையாக்கிக் கொள்வேன் என்பதை எப்படித் தெரிந்து கொள்வேன்?” என்றார்.

ஆண்டவர் ஆபிராமிடம், “மூன்று வயதுள்ள இளம் பசு, மூன்று வயதுள்ள வெள்ளாடு, மூன்று வயதுள்ள செம்மறியாடு, ஒரு காட்டுப்புறா, ஒரு மாடப்புறா ஆகியவற்றை என்னிடம் கொண்டுவா” என்றார். ஆபிராம் இவற்றை எல்லாம் அவரிடம் கொண்டு வந்து, அவைகளை இரண்டிரண்டு கூறுகளாக வெட்டி, ஒவ்வொரு பகுதியையும் அததற்கு இணையான பகுதிக்கு எதிரெதிரே வைத்தார். ஆனால் பறவைகளை அவர் வெட்டவில்லை. துண்டித்த உடல்களைப் பறவைகள் தின்ன வந்தபொழுது ஆபிராம் அவற்றை விரட்டிவிட்டார்.

கதிரவன் மறையும் நேரத்தில் ஆபிராமுக்கு ஆழ்ந்த உறக்கம் வந்தது. அச்சுறுத்தும் காரிருள் அவரைச் சூழ்ந்தது. கதிரவன் மறைந்ததும் இருள் படர்ந்தது. அப்பொழுது புகைந்து கொண்டிருந்த தீச்சட்டி ஒன்றும் எரிந்து கொண்டிருந்த தீப்பந்தம் ஒன்றும் அந்தக் கூறுகளுக்கிடையே சென்றன. அன்றே ஆண்டவர் ஆபிராமுடன் ஓர் உடன்படிக்கை செய்து, “எகிப்திலுள்ள ஆற்றிலிருந்து யூப்பிரத்தீசு பேராறு வரை உள்ள இந்நாட்டை உன் வழிமரபினர்க்கு வழங்குவேன்” என்றார்.

It happened that the word of the Lord was spoken to Abram in a vision, ‘Have no fear, Abram, I am your shield; your reward will be very great.’

  ‘My Lord,’ Abram replied ‘what do you intend to give me? I go childless…’. Then Abram said, ‘See, you have given me no descendants; some man of my household will be my heir.’ And then this word of the Lord was spoken to him, ‘He shall not be your heir; your heir shall be of your own flesh and blood.’ Then taking him outside he said, ‘Look up to heaven and count the stars if you can. Such will be your descendants’ he told him. Abram put his faith in the Lord, who counted this as making him justified.

  ‘I am the Lord’ he said to him ‘who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldaeans to make you heir to this land.’ ‘My Lord,’ Abram replied ‘how am I to know that I shall inherit it?’ He said to him, ‘Get me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove and a young pigeon.’ He brought him all these, cut them in half and put half on one side and half facing it on the other; but the birds he did not cut in half. Birds of prey came down on the carcases but Abram drove them off.

  Now as the sun was setting Abram fell into a deep sleep, and terror seized him. When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, there appeared a smoking furnace and a firebrand that went between the halves. That day the Lord made a Covenant with Abram in these terms:

‘To your descendants I give this land,

from the wadi of Egypt to the Great River,

the river Euphrates.’

✠ லூக்கா எழுதிய தூய நற்செய்தியிலிருந்து வாசகம் 1: 57-66, 80

எலிசபெத்துக்குப் பேறுகாலம் நெருங்கியது. அவர் ஒரு மகனைப் பெற்றெடுத்தார். ஆண்டவர் அவருக்குப் பெரிதும் இரக்கம் காட்டினார் என்பதைக் கேள்விப்பட்டுச் சுற்றி வாழ்ந்தோரும் உறவினரும் அவரோடு சேர்ந்து மகிழ்ந்தனர். எட்டாம் நாளில் அவர்கள் குழந்தைக்கு விருத்தசேதனம் செய்ய வந்தார்கள்; செக்கரியா என்ற அதன் தந்தையின் பெயரையே அதற்குச் சூட்ட இருந்தார்கள்.

ஆனால் அதன் தாய் அவர்களைப் பார்த்து, “வேண்டாம், அதற்கு யோவான் எனப் பெயரிட வேண்டும்” என்றார். அவர்கள் அவரிடம், “உம் உறவினருள் இப்பெயர் கொண்டவர் எவரும் இல்லையே” என்று சொல்லி, “குழந்தைக்கு என்ன பெயரிடலாம்? உம் விருப்பம் என்ன?” என்று தந்தையை நோக்கிச் சைகை காட்டிக் கேட்டார்கள்.

அதற்கு அவர் எழுதுபலகை ஒன்றைக் கேட்டு வாங்கி, “இக்குழந்தையின் பெயர் யோவான்” என்று எழுதினார். எல்லாரும் வியப்படைந்தனர். அப்பொழுதே அவரது வாய் திறந்தது; நா கட்டவிழ்ந்தது; அவர் கடவுளைப் போற்றிப் புகழ்ந்தார். சுற்றி வாழ்ந்தோர் அனைவரும் இதைப்பற்றிக் கேள்விப்பட்டு அஞ்சினர். இச்செய்தி யூதேய மலை நாடெங்கும் பரவியது. கேள்விப்பட்டவர்கள் யாவரும் இச்செய்தியைத் தங்கள் உள்ளங்களில் இருத்தி, “இக்குழந்தை எப்படிப்பட்டதாக இருக்குமோ?” என்று சொல்லிக் கொண்டார்கள். ஏனெனில் அக்குழந்தை ஆண்டவருடைய கைவன்மையைப் பெற்றிருந்தது.

குழந்தையாய் இருந்த யோவான் வளர்ந்து மன வலிமை பெற்றார். இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களுக்குத் தம்மை வெளிப்படுத்தும் காலம் வரை அவர் பாலை நிலத்தில் வாழ்ந்து வந்தார்.

அந்நாள்களில்

பவுல் கூறியது: கடவுள் சவுலை நீக்கிவிட்டுத் தாவீதை அவர்களுக்கு அரசராக ஏற்படுத்தினார்; அவரைக் குறித்து ‘ஈசாயின் மகனான தாவீதை என் இதயத்துக்கு உகந்தவனாகக் கண்டேன் என் விருப்பம் அனைத்தையும் அவன் நிறைவேற்றுவான்’ என்று சான்று பகர்ந்தார். தாம் அளித்த வாக்குறுதியின்படி கடவுள் அவருடைய வழிமரபிலிருந்தே இஸ்ரேலுக்கு இயேசு என்னும் மீட்பர் தோன்றச் செய்தார். அவருடைய வருகைக்கு முன்பே யோவான், ‘மனம்மாறி திருமுழுக்குப் பெறுங்கள்’ என்று இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் அனைவருக்கும் பறைசாற்றி வந்தார்.

யோவான் தம் வாழ்க்கை என்னும் ஓட்டத்தை முடிக்கும் தறுவாயில் ‘நான் யார் என நீங்கள் நினைக்கிறீர்களோ அவரல்ல நான். இதோ, எனக்குப்பின் ஒருவர் வருகிறார்; அவருடைய மிதியடிகளை அவிழ்க்கவும் எனக்குத் தகுதியில்லை’ என்று கூறினார்.

சகோதரரே, ஆபிரகாமின் வழிவந்த மக்களே, இங்கு இருப்போருள் கடவுளுக்கு அஞ்சி நடப்போரே, இந்த மீட்புச் செய்தி நமக்குத்தான் அனுப்பப்பட்டுள்ளது.

யாக்கோபைத் தம்மிடம் கொண்டு வரவும், சிதறுண்ட இஸ்ரயேலை ஒன்று திரட்டவும் கருப்பையிலிருந்தே ஆண்டவர் என்னைத் தம் ஊழியனாக உருவாக்கினார்; ஆண்டவர் பார்வையில் நான் மதிப்புப்பெற்றவன்; என் கடவுளே என் ஆற்றல்; அவர் இப்பொழுது உரைக்கிறார்:

அவர் கூறுவது: யாக்கோபின் குலங்களை நிலைநிறுத்துவதற்கும் இஸ்ரயேலில் காக்கப்பட்டோரைத் திருப்பிக் கொணர்வதற்கும் நீ என் ஊழியனாக இருப்பது எளிதன்றோ? உலகம் முழுவதும் என் மீட்பை அடைவதற்கு நான் உன்னைப் பிற இனத்தாருக்கு ஒளியாகவும் ஏற்படுத்துவேன்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 1:57-66,80 

The time came for Elizabeth to have her child, and she gave birth to a son; and when her neighbours and relations heard that the Lord had shown her so great a kindness, they shared her joy.

  Now on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; they were going to call him Zechariah after his father, but his mother spoke up. ‘No,’ she said ‘he is to be called John.’ They said to her, ‘But no one in your family has that name’, and made signs to his father to find out what he wanted him called. The father asked for a writing-tablet and wrote, ‘His name is John.’ And they were all astonished. At that instant his power of speech returned and he spoke and praised God. All their neighbours were filled with awe and the whole affair was talked about throughout the hill country of Judaea. All those who heard of it treasured it in their hearts. ‘What will this child turn out to be?’ they wondered. And indeed the hand of the Lord was with him.

  Meanwhile the child grew up and his spirit matured. And he lived out in the wilderness until the day he appeared openly to Israel.

A Reading from the Acts of Apostles 13: 22-26

Paul said: ‘God deposed Saul and made David their king, of whom he approved in these words, “I have selected David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who will carry out my whole purpose.” To keep his promise, God has raised up for Israel one of David’s descendants, Jesus, as Saviour, whose coming was heralded by John when he proclaimed a baptism of repentance for the whole people of Israel. Before John ended his career he said, “I am not the one you imagine me to be; that one is coming after me and I am not fit to undo his sandal.”

  ‘My brothers, sons of Abraham’s race, and all you who fear God, this message of salvation is meant for you.’

A Reading from the Book of Isaiah 49:1-6 

Islands, listen to me,

pay attention, remotest peoples.

The Lord called me before I was born,

from my mother’s womb he pronounced my name.

He made my mouth a sharp sword,

and hid me in the shadow of his hand.

He made me into a sharpened arrow,

and concealed me in his quiver.

He said to me, ‘You are my servant (Israel)

in whom I shall be glorified’;

while I was thinking, ‘I have toiled in vain,

I have exhausted myself for nothing’;

and all the while my cause was with the Lord,

my reward with my God.

I was honoured in the eyes of the Lord,
