GOSPEL
“Let her observe this custom in view of the day of my burial! » (Jn 12, 1-11)
Praise be to you, Lord,
King of eternal glory!
Hail, O Christ, our King:
you alone have pity on our errors.
Praise be to you, Lord,
King of eternal glory!
Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John
Six days before the Passover,
Jesus came to Bethany where Lazarus lived,
whom he had raised from the dead.
A meal was given in honor of Jesus.
Martha was serving,
Lazarus was among the guests with Jesus.
Now, Mary had taken a pound of very pure and very valuable perfume ;
she spread the perfume on Jesus' feet,
which she wiped with her hair;
the house was filled with the smell of perfume.
Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples,
the one who was going to betray him,
then said:
“Why was this perfume not sold
for three hundred pieces of silver,
which they would have given to the poor? »
He spoke thus, not out of concern for the poor,
but because he was a thief:
as he held the common purse,
he took what was put into it.
Jesus said to her:
“Let her observe this custom
for the day of my burial!
You will always have poor people with you,
but you will not always have me. »
Now a great crowd of Jews heard that Jesus was there,
and they came, not only for Jesus' sake,
but also to see this Lazarus
whom he had raised from the dead.
The chief priests then decided
to kill Lazarus also,
because many Jews, because of him,
were going away and believing in Jesus.
– Let us acclaim the Word of God.
