"My eyes have seen your salvation"
A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke (2, 22-40)
When the time prescribed by the law of Moses for the purification was fulfilled, Jesus' parents brought him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, according to what is written in the Law: Every firstborn male shall be consecrated to the Lord. . They also came to offer the sacrifice prescribed by the law of the Lord: a couple of turtledoves or two small doves.
Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon. He was a righteous and religious man, who awaited the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. He had received from the Holy Spirit the announcement that he would not see death until he had seen Christ, the Messiah of the Lord. Under the action of the Spirit, Symeon came to the Temple. At the moment when the parents presented the child Jesus to conform to the rite of the Law which concerned him, Simeon received the child in his arms, and he blessed God by saying: "Now, O Sovereign Master, you can leave your servant go in peace, according to your word. For my eyes have seen the salvation which you prepared for the face of the peoples: a light which reveals itself to the nations and gives glory to your people Israel. "
The child's father and mother were astonished at what was said about him. Simeon blessed them, then he said to his mother Mary: “Here is a child that will bring down and raise many in Israel. It will be a sign of contradiction - and you, your soul will be crossed by a sword -: thus the thoughts which come from the hearts of many will be revealed. "
There was also a woman prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very advanced in age; after seven years of marriage, remained a widow, she arrived at the age of 84. She did not stray from the Temple, serving God day and night in fasting and prayer. Coming at this very hour, she proclaimed the praises of God and spoke of the child to all who awaited the deliverance of Jerusalem.
When they had completed all that the law of the Lord prescribed, they returned to Galilee, to their city of Nazareth.
The child grew and grew stronger, filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.
