இயேசு அதிகாரத்தோடு மக்களுக்குப் போதித்து வந்தார்.

இயேசுவும் சீடர்களும் கப்பர்நாகும் ஊரில் நுழைந்தார்கள். ஓய்வு நாள்களில் இயேசு தொழுகைக்கூடத்திற்குச் சென்று கற்பித்து வந்தார். அவருடைய போதனையைக் குறித்து மக்கள் வியப்பில் ஆழ்ந்தார்கள். ஏனெனில் அவர் மறைநூல் அறிஞரைப் போலன்றி, அதிகாரத்தோடு அவர்களுக்குக் கற்பித்து வந்தார்.

அப்போது அவர்களுடைய தொழுகைக்கூடத்தில் தீய ஆவி பிடித்திருந்த ஒருவர் இருந்தார். அவரைப் பிடித்திருந்த ஆவி, “நாசரேத்து இயேசுவே, உமக்கு இங்கு என்ன வேலை? எங்களை ஒழித்துவிடவா வந்தீர்? நீர் யார் என எனக்குத் தெரியும். நீர் கடவுளுக்கு அர்ப்பணமானவர்” என்று கத்தியது. “வாயை மூடு; இவரை விட்டு வெளியே போ” என்று இயேசு அதனை அதட்டினார். அப்பொழுது அத்தீய ஆவி அம்மனிதருக்கு வலிப்பு உண்டாக்கிப் பெருங்கூச்சலிட்டு அவரை விட்டு வெளியேறிற்று.

அவர்கள் அனைவரும் திகைப்புற்று, “இது என்ன? இது அதிகாரம் கொண்ட புதிய போதனையாய் இருக்கிறதே! இவர் தீய ஆவிகளுக்கும் கட்டளையிடுகிறார்; அவையும் இவருக்குக் கீழ்ப்படிகின்றனவே!” என்று தங்களிடையே பேசிக்கொண்டனர். அவரைப் பற்றிய செய்தி உடனே கலிலேயாவின் சுற்றுப்புறமெங்கும் பரவியது.

அந்நாள்களில்

சீலோவில் உண்டு குடித்தபின், அன்னா எழுந்தார். குரு ஏலி, ஆண்டவரின் கோவில் முற்றத்தில் ஓர் இருக்கையில் அமர்ந்திருந்தார். அன்னா மனம் கசந்து அழுது புலம்பி, ஆண்டவரிடம் மன்றாடினார். அவர் பொருத்தனை செய்து வேண்டிக்கொண்டது: “படைகளின் ஆண்டவரே! நீர் உம் அடியாளாகிய என் துயரத்தைக் கண்ணோக்கி, என்னை மறவாமல் நினைவுகூர்ந்து எனக்கு ஓர் ஆண் குழந்தையைத் தருவீரானால், அவனை அவன் வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் ஆண்டவராகிய உமக்கு ஒப்புக்கொடுப்பேன். அவனது தலைமேல் சவரக் கத்தியே படாது.”

அவர் இவ்வாறு ஆண்டவர் திருமுன் தொடர்ந்து மன்றாடிக் கொண்டிருந்தபோது, ஏலி அவருடைய வாயைக் கவனித்தார். அன்னா தம் உள்ளத்தினுள் பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்: அவருடைய உதடுகள் மட்டும் அசைந்தன; குரல் கேட்கவில்லை. ஆகவே ஏலி அவரை ஒரு குடிகாரி என்று கருதினார். ஏலி அவரை நோக்கி, “எவ்வளவு காலம் நீ குடிகாரியாய் இருப்பாய்? மது அருந்துவதை நிறுத்து” என்றார்.

அதற்கு அன்னா மறுமொழியாக, “இல்லை என் தலைவரே! நான் உள்ளம் நொந்த ஒரு பெண். திராட்சை இரசத்தையோ வேறு எந்த மதுவையோ நான் அருந்தவில்லை. மாறாக, ஆண்டவர் திருமுன் என் உள்ளத்தைக் கொட்டிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறேன். உம் அடியாளை ஒரு கீழ்த்தரப் பெண்ணாகக் கருத வேண்டாம். ஏனெனில், என் துன்ப துயரங்களின் மிகுதியால் நான் இதுவரை பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்தேன்” என்று கூறினார்.

பிறகு ஏலி, “மனநிறைவோடு செல். இஸ்ரயேலின் கடவுள் நீ அவரிடம் விண்ணப்பித்த உனது வேண்டுகோளைக் கேட்டருள்வார்” என்று பதிலளித்தார். அதற்கு அன்னா, “உம் அடியாள் உம் கண்முன்னே அருள் பெறுவாளாக!”என்று கூறித் தம் வழியே சென்று உணவு அருந்தினார். இதன்பின் அவர் முகம் வாடியிருக்கவில்லை.

அவர்கள் காலையில் எழுந்து ஆண்டவர் திருமுன் வழிபட்டுவிட்டுத் திரும்பிச்சென்று இராமாவில் இருந்த தங்கள் இல்லம் அடைந்தனர். எல்கானா தம் மனைவி அன்னாவோடு கூடி வாழ்ந்தார். ஆண்டவரும் அவரை நினைவுகூர்ந்தார். உரிய காலத்தில் அன்னா கருவுற்று ஒரு மகனைப் பெற்றெடுத்தார். “நான் அவனை ஆண்டவரிடமிருந்து கேட்டேன்” என்று சொல்லி, அவர் அவனுக்குச் ‘சாமுவேல்’என்று பெயரிட்டார்.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 1:21-28.

In the city of Capernaum, On the Sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and was teaching. And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.

A Reading from the First Book of Samuel 1:9-20 

In those days: After they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, Hannah rose. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly. And she vowed a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall touch his head.” As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, and her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli took her to be a drunken woman. And Eli said to her, “How long will you go on being drunk? Put your wine away from you.” But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for all along I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation.” Then Eli answered, “Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition that you have made to him.” And she said, “Let your servant find favour in your eyes.” Then the woman went on her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad. They rose early in the morning and worshipped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the Lord remembered her. And in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, for she said, “I have asked for him from the Lord.”
