இயேசு பல்வேறு பிணிகளால் வருந்தியவரைக் குணப்படுத்தினார்.

இயேசுவும் சீடர்களும் தொழுகைக்கூடத்தை விட்டு வெளியே வந்து யாக்கோபு, யோவானுடன் சீமோன், அந்திரேயா ஆகியோரின் வீட்டிற்குள் சென்றார்கள்.

சீமோனுடைய மாமியார் காய்ச்சலாய்க் கிடந்தார். உடனே அவர்கள் அதைப் பற்றி இயேசுவிடம் சொன்னார்கள். இயேசு அவரருகில் சென்று கையைப் பிடித்து அவரைத் தூக்கினார். காய்ச்சல் அவரை விட்டு நீங்கிற்று. அவர் அவர்களுக்குப் பணிவிடை செய்தார்.

மாலை வேளையில், கதிரவன் மறையும் நேரத்தில் நோயாளர்கள், பேய்பிடித்தவர்கள் அனைவரையும் மக்கள் அவரிடம் கொண்டு வந்தார்கள். நகர் முழுவதும் வீட்டு வாயில்முன் கூடியிருந்தது. பல்வேறு பிணிகளால் வருந்திய பலரை அவர் குணப்படுத்தினார். பல பேய்களையும் ஓட்டினார்; அந்தப் பேய்கள் அவரை அறிந்திருந்ததால் அவற்றை அவர் பேசவிடவில்லை.

இயேசு விடியற்காலைக் கருக்கலில் எழுந்து தனிமையான ஓர் இடத்திற்குப் புறப்பட்டுச் சென்றார். அங்கே அவர் இறைவனிடம் வேண்டிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். சீமோனும் அவருடன் இருந்தவர்களும் அவரைத் தேடிச் சென்றார்கள். அவரைக் கண்டதும், “எல்லாரும் உம்மைத் தேடிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள்” என்றார்கள். அதற்கு அவர், “நாம் அடுத்த ஊர்களுக்குப் போவோம், வாருங்கள். அங்கும் நான் நற்செய்தியைப் பறைசாற்ற வேண்டும்; ஏனெனில் இதற்காகவே நான் வந்திருக்கிறேன்” என்று சொன்னார். பின்பு அவர் கலிலேய நாடு முழுவதும் சென்று அவர்களுடைய தொழுகைக்கூடங்களில் நற்செய்தியைப் பறைசாற்றிப் பேய்களை ஓட்டி வந்தார்.

அந்நாள்களில்

சிறுவன் சாமுவேல் ஏலியின் மேற்பார்வையில் ஆண்டவருக்கு ஊழியம் செய்துவந்தான். அந்நாள்களில் ஆண்டவரின் வார்த்தை அரிதாக இருந்தது. காட்சியும் அவ்வளவாக இல்லை. அப்போது ஒரு நாள் ஏலி தம் உறைவிடத்தில் படுத்திருந்தார். கண்பார்வை மங்கிவிட்டதால் அவரால் பார்க்க முடியவில்லை. கடவுளின் விளக்கு இன்னும் அணையவில்லை. கடவுளின் பேழை வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த ஆண்டவரின் இல்லத்தில் சாமுவேல் படுத்திருந்தான்.

அப்பொழுது ஆண்டவர், ‘சாமுவேல்’ என்று அழைத்தார். அதற்கு அவன், “இதோ! அடியேன்” என்று சொல்லி, ஏலியிடம் ஓடி, “இதோ! அடியேன். என்னை அழைத்தீர்களா?” என்று கேட்டான். அதற்கு அவர், “நான் அழைக்கவில்லை. திரும்பிச் சென்று படுத்துக்கொள்” என்றார். அவனும் சென்று படுத்துக்கொண்டான்.

ஆண்டவர் மீண்டும் ‘சாமுவேல்’ என்று அழைக்க, அவன் எழுந்து ஏலியிடம் சென்று, “இதோ! அடியேன். என்னை அழைத்தீர்களா?” என்று கேட்டான். அவரோ, “நான் அழைக்கவில்லை மகனே! சென்று படுத்துக் கொள்” என்றார். சாமுவேல் ஆண்டவரை இன்னும் அறியவில்லை. அவனுக்கு ஆண்டவரின் வார்த்தை இன்னும் வெளிப்படுத்தப்படவில்லை.

மூன்றாம் முறையாக ஆண்டவர், ‘சாமுவேல்’ என்று அழைத்தார். அவன் எழுந்து ஏலியிடம் சென்று, “இதோ! அடியேன். என்னை அழைத்தீர்களா?” என்று கேட்டான். அப்பொழுது சிறுவனை ஆண்டவர்தாம் அழைத்தார் என்று ஏலி தெரிந்துகொண்டார். பின்பு ஏலி சாமுவேலை நோக்கி, “சென்று படுத்துக்கொள். உன்னை அவர் மீண்டும் அழைத்தால் அதற்கு நீ, ‘ஆண்டவரே பேசும், உம் அடியான் கேட்கிறேன்’ என்று பதில் சொல்” என்றார். சாமுவேலும் தன் இடத்திற்குச் சென்று படுத்துக்கொண்டான்.

அப்போது ஆண்டவர் வந்து நின்று, ‘சாமுவேல், சாமுவேல்’ என்று முன்புபோல் அழைத்தார். அதற்குச் சாமுவேல், ‘பேசும், உம் அடியான் கேட்கிறேன்’ என்று மறுமொழி கூறினான்.

சாமுவேல் வளர்ந்தான்; ஆண்டவர் அவனோடு இருந்தார்; சாமுவேலது வார்த்தை எதையும் அவர் தரையில் விழவிடவில்லை. சாமுவேல் ஆண்டவரின் இறைவாக்கினராக நியமிக்கப்பட்டுவிட்டார் என்று, தாண் முதல் பெயேர்செபா வரையிலும் அனைத்து இஸ்ரயேலரும் அறிந்து கொண்டனர்.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 1:29-39

At that time: Jesus left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them. That evening at sunset they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons. And the whole city was gathered together at the door. And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.” And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is what I came for.” And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.

A Reading from the First Book of Samuel 3:1-10,19-20 

In those days: The boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord in the presence of Eli. And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision. At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim; so that he could not see, was lying down in his own place. The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. Then the Lord called Samuel, and he said, “Here I am!” and ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down. And the Lord called again, “Samuel!” And Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down, and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant hears.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.” And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established as a prophet of the Lord.
