'The Son of Man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will'

A Feading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 26:14-25 

At that time: One of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him. Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where would you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?” He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’” And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover. When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve. And as they were eating, he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?” He answered, “He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You have said so.”

Response : In your great mercy, answer me, O Lord, for a time of your favour.

It is for you that I suffer taunts, that shame has covered my face. To my own kin I have become an outcast, a stranger to the children of my mother. Zeal for your house consumes me, and taunts against you fall on me.

Taunts have broken my heart; here I am in anguish. I looked for solace, but there was none; for consolers—not one could I find. For food they gave me gall; in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

Who thinks he has a case against me? Let him approach me

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah 50: 4-9

The Lord God has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary. Morning by morning he awakens; he awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught. The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious; I turned not backwards. I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting. But the Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame. He who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who is my adversary? Let him come near to me. Behold, the Lord God helps me; who will declare me guilty?

அக்காலத்தில்

பன்னிருவருள் ஒருவனாகிய யூதாசு இஸ்காரியோத்து தலைமைக் குருவிடம் வந்து, ‘‘இயேசுவை உங்களுக்கு நான் காட்டிக்கொடுத்தால் எனக்கு என்ன தருவீர்கள்?” என்று கேட்டான். அவர்களும் முப்பது வெள்ளிக் காசுகளை எண்ணி அவனுக்குக் கொடுத்தார்கள். அதுமுதல் அவன் அவரைக் காட்டிக்கொடுப்பதற்கு வாய்ப்புத் தேடிக்கொண்டிருந்தான்.

புளிப்பற்ற அப்ப விழாவின் முதல் நாளில் சீடர்கள் இயேசுவை அணுகி வந்து, ‘‘நீர் பாஸ்கா விருந்துண்ண நாங்கள் எங்கே ஏற்பாடு செய்யவேண்டும் என விரும்புகிறீர்?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். இயேசு அவர்களிடம், ‘‘நீங்கள் புறப்பட்டு நகருக்குள் சென்று இன்னாரிடம் போய், ‘எனது நேரம் நெருங்கி வந்துவிட்டது; என் சீடர்களோடு உம் வீட்டில் பாஸ்கா கொண்டாடப்போகிறேன்’ எனப் போதகர் கூறுகிறார் எனச் சொல்லுங்கள்” என்றார். இயேசு தங்களுக்குப் பணித்தபடியே சீடர்கள் செயல்பட்டுப் பாஸ்கா விருந்துக்கு ஏற்பாடு செய்தார்கள்.

மாலை வேளையானதும் அவர் பன்னிருவரோடும் பந்தியில் அமர்ந்தார். அவர்கள் உண்டுகொண்டிருந்தபொழுது அவர், ‘‘உங்களுள் ஒருவன் என்னைக் காட்டிக்கொடுப்பான் என உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்” என்றார். அப்பொழுது அவர்கள் மிகவும் வருத்தமுற்றவர்களாய், ‘‘ஆண்டவரே, அது நானோ?” என ஒவ்வொருவரும் அவரிடம் கேட்கத் தொடங்கினார்கள். அதற்கு அவர், ‘‘என்னுடன் பாத்திரத்தில் தொட்டு உண்பவனே என்னைக் காட்டிக்கொடுப்பான். மானிடமகன், தம்மைப்பற்றி மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ளபடியே போகிறார். ஆனால், ஐயோ! அவரைக் காட்டிக்கொடுக்கிறவனுக்குக் கேடு; அம்மனிதன் பிறவாதிருந்தால் அவனுக்கு நலமாய் இருந்திருக்கும்” என்றார். அவரைக் காட்டிக்கொடுத்த யூதாசும் ‘‘ரபி, நானோ?” என அவரிடம் கேட்க, இயேசு, ‘‘நீயே சொல்லிவிட்டாய்” என்றார்.

பழிச்சொல் என் இதயத்தைப் பிளந்துவிட்டது; நான் மிகவும் வருந்துகின்றேன்; ஆறுதல் அளிப்பாருக்காகக் காத்திருந்தேன்; யாரும் வரவில்லை; தேற்றிடுவோருக்காகத் தேடிநின்றேன்; யாரையும் காணவில்லை.

நலிந்தவனை நல்வாக்கால் ஊக்குவிக்கும் அறிவை நான் பெற்றிட, ஆண்டவராகிய என் தலைவர், கற்றோனின் நாவை எனக்கு அளித்துள்ளார்; காலைதோறும் அவர் என்னைத் தட்டி எழுப்புகின்றார்; கற்போர் கேட்பதுபோல் நானும் செவிகொடுக்கச் செய்கின்றார். ஆண்டவராகிய என் தலைவர் என் செவியைத் திறந்துள்ளார்.

நான் கிளர்ந்தெழவில்லை; விலகிச் செல்லவுமில்லை. அடிப்போர்க்கு என் முதுகையும், தாடியைப் பிடுங்குவோர்க்கு என் தாடையையும் ஒப்புவித்தேன். நிந்தனை செய்வோர்க்கும் காறி உமிழ்வோர்க்கும் என் முகத்தை மறைக்கவில்லை. ஆண்டவராகிய என் தலைவர் துணை நிற்கின்றார்; நான் அவமானம் அடையேன்; என் முகத்தைக் கற்பாறை ஆக்கிக்கொண்டேன்; இழிநிலையை நான் அடைவதில்லை என்றறிவேன். நான் குற்றமற்றவன் என எனக்குத் தீர்ப்பு வழங்குபவர் அருகில் உள்ளார்.

என்னோடு வழக்காடுபவன் எவன்? நாம் இருவரும் எதிர் எதிரே நிற்போம்; என்மீது குற்றஞ்சாட்டுபவன் எவன்? அவன் என்னை நெருங்கட்டும். இதோ, ஆண்டவராகிய என் தலைவர் எனக்குத் துணை நிற்கின்றார்; நான் குற்றவாளி எனத் தீர்ப்பிட யாரால் இயலும்?
