சிறு பிள்ளைகள் மேல் இயேசு தம் கைகளை வைத்து வேண்டுதல் செய்யுமாறு அவர்களைச் சிலர் அவரிடம் கொண்டு வந்தனர். சீடரோ அவர்களை அதட்டினர். ஆனால் இயேசு, “சிறு பிள்ளைகளை என்னிடம் வரவிடுங்கள்; அவர்களைத் தடுக்காதீர்கள்; ஏனெனில் விண்ணரசு இத்தகையோருக்கே உரியது” என்றார். அவர்களைத் தொட்டு ஆசி வழங்கிய பின்பு அவர் அவ்விடத்தை விட்டுச் சென்றார்.

அந்நாள்களில்

யோசுவா மக்களிடம் கூறியது: “ஆண்டவருக்கு அஞ்சி உண்மையோடும் நேர்மையோடும் அவருக்கு ஊழியம் புரியுங்கள். நதிக்கு அப்பாலும், எகிப்திலும், உங்கள் மூதாதையர் பணிந்து வந்த தெய்வங்களை விட்டு விலகுங்கள். ஆண்டவருக்கு ஊழியம் புரிவது தீயது என்று உங்கள் பார்வைக்குத் தோன்றினால், உங்கள் மூதாதையர் நதிக்கு அப்பால் பணிந்து வந்த தெய்வங்களுக்கோ, உங்கள் நாட்டில் உங்களுடன் வாழும் எமோரியரின் தெய்வங்களுக்கோ இவர்களுள் யாருக்கு ஊழியம் செய்வீர்கள் என்பதை நீங்களே இப்போது முடிவு செய்யுங்கள். ஆனால் நானும் என் வீட்டாரும் ஆண்டவருக்கே ஊழியம் செய்வோம்."

மக்கள் மறுமொழியாக, “ஆண்டவரைக் கைவிட்டு வேற்றுத் தெய்வங்களை வணங்குவது எங்களிடத்தே அறவே நிகழாதிருப்பதாக! ஏனெனில் எங்கள் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவர் எங்களையும் எங்கள் மூதாதையரையும் அடிமைத்தன வீடாகிய எகிப்து நாட்டிலிருந்து வெளியே கொண்டு வந்தார். எங்கள் கண்முன் இப்பெரிய அடையாளங்களைச் செய்தார். நாங்கள் நடந்து வந்த எல்லா வழிகளிலும் நாங்கள் கடந்து வந்த மக்களிடையிலும் எங்களைக் காத்தருளினார். ஆண்டவர் எல்லா மக்களையும், இந்நாட்டில் வாழ்ந்த எமோரியரையும் எங்கள் முன்னிருந்து விரட்டினார். நாங்களும் ஆண்டவருக்கு ஊழியம் புரிவோம். ஏனெனில் அவரே எங்கள் கடவுள்” என்றனர்.

யோசுவா மக்களிடம், “உங்களால் ஆண்டவருக்கு ஊழியம் செய்ய இயலாது. ஏனெனில் அவர் தூய கடவுள். அவர் வேற்றுத் தெய்வ வழிபாட்டைச் சகிக்காத கடவுள். உங்கள் குற்றங்களையும் பாவங்களையும் அவர் மன்னிக்க மாட்டார். ஆனால் நீங்கள் ஆண்டவரைக் கைவிட்டு வேற்றுத் தெய்வங்களை வணங்கினால் அவர் மீண்டும் உங்களுக்குத் தீங்கு செய்வார். உங்களுக்கு நன்மை செய்த அவர் உங்களை அழித்துவிடுவார்” என்றார்.

மக்கள் யோசுவாவிடம், “இல்லை, நாங்கள் ஆண்டவருக்கே ஊழியம் புரிவோம்” என்றனர். யோசுவா மக்களிடம் “ஆண்டவருக்கு ஊழியம் செய்ய அவரை நீங்களே தெரிந்துகொண்டீர்கள் என்பதற்கு நீங்களே சாட்சிகள்” என்றார். அவர்கள், “நாங்களே சாட்சிகள்” என்றனர். இப்பொழுது உங்கள் நடுவில் உள்ள வேற்றுத் தெய்வங்களை விலக்கி விடுங்கள். இஸ்ரயேலின் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரிடம் உங்கள் இதயங்களைத் திருப்புங்கள்” என்றார். மக்கள் யோசுவாவிடம், “எங்கள் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவருக்கு நாங்கள் ஊழியம் புரிவோம். அவரது குரலுக்குக் கீழ்ப்படிவோம்” என்றனர்.

அன்று யோசுவா மக்களுக்காக உடன்படிக்கை செய்தார். செக்கேமில் அவர் அவர்களுக்கு விதிமுறைகளையும் ஒழுங்குகளையும் கொடுத்தார். யோசுவா இவ்வார்த்தைகளைக் கடவுளின் திருச்சட்ட நூலில் எழுதினார். ஒரு பெரும் கல்லை எடுத்து அதை ஆண்டவரின் திருத்தலத்தில் ஒரு கருவாலி மரத்தின் கீழ் நாட்டினார். யோசுவா எல்லா மக்களிடமும், “இதோ! இக்கல் நமக்கு எதிரான சான்றாக இருக்கும். ஏனெனில் ஆண்டவர் நம்மோடு பேசிய எல்லாவற்றையும் இது கேட்டது. நீங்கள் உங்கள் கடவுளை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள மறுத்தால் இது உங்களுக்கு எதிரான சான்றாக இருக்கும்” என்றார். யோசுவா மக்களை அவரவர் உரிமைச் சொத்தாகிய பகுதிகளுக்கு அனுப்பி வைத்தார்.

இந்நிகழ்ச்சிக்குப்பின் நூனின் மகனும் ஆண்டவரின் ஊழியருமாகிய யோசுவா இறந்தார். அவருக்கு வயது நூற்றுப்பத்து.

'The Lord is a holy God, a jealous God'

Joshua said to all the people, ‘Fear the Lord and serve him perfectly and sincerely; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. But if you will not serve the Lord, choose today whom you wish to serve, whether the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are now living. As for me and my House, we will serve the Lord.’

  The people answered, ‘We have no intention of deserting the Lord and serving other gods! Was it not the Lord our God who brought us and our ancestors out of the land of Egypt, the house of slavery, who worked those great wonders before our eyes and preserved us all along the way we travelled and among all the peoples through whom we journeyed? What is more, the Lord drove all those peoples out before us, as well as the Amorites who used to live in this country. We too will serve the Lord, for he is our God.’

  Then Joshua said to the people, ‘You cannot serve the Lord, because he is a holy God, he is a jealous God who will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. If you desert the Lord to follow alien gods he in turn will afflict and destroy you after the goodness he has shown you.’ The people answered Joshua, ‘No; it is the Lord we wish to serve.’ Then Joshua said to the people, ‘You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the Lord, to serve him.’ They answered, ‘We are witnesses.’ ‘Then cast away the alien gods among you and give your hearts to the Lord the God of Israel!’ The people answered Joshua, ‘It is the Lord our God we choose to serve; it is his voice that we will obey.’

  That day, Joshua made a covenant for the people; he laid down a statute and ordinance for them at Shechem. Joshua wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a great stone and set it up there, under the oak in the sanctuary of the Lord, and Joshua said to all the people, ‘See! This stone shall be a witness against us because it has heard all the words that the Lord has spoken to us: it shall be a witness against you in case you deny your God.’ Then Joshua sent the people away, and each returned to his own inheritance.

  After these things Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died; he was a hundred and ten years old.
