A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 16:19-31 

At that time: Jesus said to the Pharisees, “There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried, and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not do so, and none may cross from there to us.’ And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house— for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’”

Blessed indeed is the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the path with sinners, nor abides in the company of scorners, but whose delight is the law of the Lord, and who ponders his law day and night.

He is like a tree that is planted beside the flowing waters, that yields its fruit in due season, and whose leaves shall never fade; and all that he does shall prosper.

Not so are the wicked, not so! For they, like winnowed chaff, shall be driven away by the wind. for the Lord knows the way of the just, but the way of the wicked will perish.

A curse on the man who puts his trust in man and turns from the Lord

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 17:5-10 

Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord. He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.” The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு பரிசேயரை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: “செல்வர் ஒருவர் இருந்தார். அவர் விலையுயர்ந்த மெல்லிய செந்நிற ஆடை அணிந்து, நாள்தோறும் விருந்துண்டு இன்புற்றிருந்தார். இலாசர் என்னும் பெயர் கொண்ட ஏழை ஒருவரும் இருந்தார். அவர் உடல் முழுவதும் புண்ணாய் இருந்தது. அவர் அச்செல்வருடைய வீட்டு வாயில் அருகே கிடந்தார். அவர் செல்வருடைய மேசையிலிருந்து விழும் துண்டுகளால் தம் பசியாற்ற விரும்பினார். நாய்கள் வந்து அவர் புண்களை நக்கும். அந்த ஏழை இறந்தார். வானதூதர்கள் அவரை ஆபிரகாமின் மடியில் கொண்டு போய்ச் சேர்த்தார்கள். செல்வரும் இறந்தார். அவர் அடக்கம் செய்யப்பட்டார்.

அவர் பாதாளத்தில் வதைக்கப்பட்டபோது அண்ணாந்து பார்த்துத் தொலையில் ஆபிரகாமையும் அவரது மடியில் இலாசரையும் கண்டார். அவர், ‘தந்தை ஆபிரகாமே, எனக்கு இரங்கும்; இலாசர் தமது விரல் நுனியைத் தண்ணீரில் நனைத்து எனது நாவைக் குளிரச் செய்ய அவரை அனுப்பும். ஏனெனில் இந்தத் தீப்பிழம்பில் நான் மிகுந்த வேதனைப்படுகிறேன்’ என்று உரக்கக் கூறினார்.

அதற்கு ஆபிரகாம், ‘மகனே, நீ உன் வாழ்நாளில் நலன்களையே பெற்றாய்; அதே வேளையில் இலாசர் இன்னல்களையே அடைந்தார். அதை நினைத்துக்கொள். இப்பொழுது அவர் இங்கே ஆறுதல் பெறுகிறார்; நீயோ மிகுந்த வேதனைப்படுகிறாய். அன்றியும் எங்களுக்கும் உங்களுக்கும் இடையே பெரும் பிளவு ஒன்று உள்ளது. ஆகையால் இங்கிருந்து ஒருவர் உங்களிடம் வர விரும்பினாலும் கடந்து வர இயலாது. அங்கிருந்து நீங்கள் எங்களிடம் கடந்து வரவும் இயலாது’ என்றார்.

அவர், ‘அப்படியானால் தந்தையே, அவரை என் தந்தை வீட்டுக்கு அனுப்புமாறு உம்மிடம் வேண்டுகிறேன். எனக்கு ஐந்து சகோதரர்கள் உண்டு. அவர்களும் வேதனை மிகுந்த இந்த இடத்திற்கு வராதவாறு அவர் அவர்களை எச்சரிக்கலாமே’ என்றார். அதற்கு ஆபிரகாம், ‘மோசேயும் இறைவாக்கினர்களும் அவர்களுக்கு உண்டு. அவர்களுக்குச் செவிசாய்க்கட்டும்’ என்றார். அவர், ‘அப்படியல்ல, தந்தை ஆபிரகாமே, இறந்த ஒருவர் அவர்களிடம் போனால் அவர்கள் மனம் மாறுவார்கள்’ என்றார். ஆபிரகாம், ‘அவர்கள் மோசேக்கும் இறைவாக்கினருக்கும் செவி சாய்க்காவிட்டால், இறந்த ஒருவர் உயிர்த்தெழுந்து அவர்களிடம் போனாலும் நம்ப மாட்டார்கள்’ என்றார்.”

ஆண்டவரில் நம்பிக்கை வைப்போர் பேறுபெற்றோர்; ஆண்டவரே அவர்களது நம்பிக்கை. அவர்கள் நீர் அருகில் நடப்பட்ட மரத்துக்கு ஒப்பாவர்; அது நீரோடையை நோக்கி வேர் விடுகின்றது. வெப்பமிகு நேரத்தில் அதற்கு அச்சமில்லை; அதன் இலைகள் பசுமையாய் இருக்கும்; வறட்சிமிகு ஆண்டிலும் அதற்குக் கவலை இராது; அது எப்போதும் கனி கொடுக்கும்.

இதயமே அனைத்திலும் வஞ்சகம் மிக்கது; அதனை நலமாக்க முடியாது. அதனை யார்தான் புரிந்துகொள்வர்? ஆண்டவராகிய நானே இதயச் சிந்தனைகளை ஆய்பவர்; உள்ளுணர்வுகளைச் சோதித்து அறிபவர். ஒவ்வொருவரின் வழிகளுக்கும் செயல்களின் விளைவுக்கும் ஏற்றவாறு நடத்துபவர்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 20:17-28

At that time: As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.” Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the chalice that I am to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” He said to them, “You will drink my chalice, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.” And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
