உங்கள் தந்தை ஆபிரகாம், நான் வரும் காலத்தைக் காண முடியும் என்பதை முன்னிட்டுப் பேருவகை கொண்டார்.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு யூதர்களிடம், “என் வார்த்தையைக் கடைப்பிடிப்போர் என்றுமே சாகமாட்டார்கள் என உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்” என்றார்.

யூதர்கள் அவரிடம், “நீ பேய் பிடித்தவன்தான் என்பது இப்போது தெரிந்துவிட்டது. ஆபிரகாம் இறந்தார்; இறைவாக்கினர்களும் இறந்தார்கள். ஆனால் என் வார்த்தையைக் கடைப்பிடிப்போர் என்றுமே சாகமாட்டார் என்கிறாயே! எங்கள் தந்தை ஆபிரகாமைவிட நீ பெரியவனோ? ஆபிரகாம் இறந்தார்; இறைவாக்கினரும் இறந்தனர். நீ யாரென்று நினைத்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறாய்?” என்றார்கள்.

இயேசு மறுமொழியாக, “நானே என்னைப் பெருமைப்படுத்தினால், அது எனக்குப் பெருமை இல்லை. என்னைப் பெருமைப்படுத்துபவர் என் தந்தையே. அவரையே நீங்கள் உங்கள் தந்தை என்றும் சொல்கிறீர்கள். ஆனால் அவரை உங்களுக்குத் தெரியாது; எனக்குத் தெரியும். எனக்கு அவரைத் தெரியாது என நான் சொன்னால் உங்களைப் போல நானும் பொய்யனாவேன். அவரை எனக்குத் தெரியும். அவருடைய வார்த்தையையும் நான் கடைப்பிடிக்கிறேன். உங்கள் தந்தை ஆபிரகாம் நான் வரும் காலத்தைக் காண முடியும் என்பதை முன்னிட்டுப் பேருவகை கொண்டார்; அதனைக் கண்டபோது மகிழ்ச்சியும் கொண்டார்” என்றார்.

யூதர்கள் இயேசுவை நோக்கி, “உனக்கு இன்னும் ஐம்பது வயதுகூட ஆகவில்லை; நீ ஆபிரகாமைக் கண்டிருக்கிறாயா?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “ஆபிரகாம் பிறப்பதற்கு முன்பே நான் இருக்கிறேன் என உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்” என்றார். இதைக் கேட்ட அவர்கள் அவர்மேல் எறியக் கற்களை எடுத்தார்கள். ஆனால் இயேசு மறைவாக நழுவிக் கோவிலிலிருந்து வெளியேறினார்.

ஆபிராம் பணிந்து வணங்க, கடவுள் அவரிடம் கூறியது: “உன்னுடன் நான் செய்துகொள்ளும் உடன்படிக்கை இதுவே: எண்ணற்ற நாடுகளுக்கு நீ தந்தை ஆவாய். இனி உன் பெயர் ஆபிராம் அன்று; ‘ஆபிரகாம்’ என்ற பெயரால் நீ அழைக்கப்படுவாய். ஏனெனில் எண்ணற்ற நாடுகளுக்கு உன்னை நான் மூதாதையாக்குகிறேன். மிகப் பெருமளவில் உன்னைப் பலுகச் செய்வேன்; உன்னிடமிருந்து நாடுகளை உண்டாக்குவேன். உன்னிடமிருந்து அரசர்கள் தோன்றுவர். தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாக உன்னுடனும், உனக்குப்பின் வரும் உன் வழிமரபினருடனும் என்றுமுள்ள உடன்படிக்கையை நான் நிலைநாட்டுவேன்.

இதனால் உனக்கும் உனக்குப்பின் வரும் உன் வழிமரபினருக்கும் நான் கடவுளாக இருப்பேன். நீ தங்கியிருக்கும் நாட்டையும் கானான் நாடு முழுவதையும் என்றுமுள்ள உரிமைச் சொத்தாக உனக்கும் உனக்குப்பின் உன் வழிமரபினருக்கும் வழங்குவேன். நான் அவர்களுக்குக் கடவுளாக இருப்பேன்” என்றார்.

மீண்டும் கடவுள் ஆபிரகாமிடம், “நீயும் தலைமுறைதோறும் உனக்குப் பின் வரும் உன் வழிமரபினரும் என் உடன்படிக்கையைக் கடைப்பிடிக்க வேண்டும்” என்றார்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 8: 51-59 

At that time: Jesus said to the Jews, “Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.” The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon! Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.’ Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?” Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ But you have not known him. I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and I keep his word. Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.” So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.

No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make you into nations, and kings shall come from you. And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. At that time: The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!” But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy— the Son of God. And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.” And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
