என் மகள் இப்பொழுதுதான் இறந்தாள். ஆயினும் நீர் வந்து அவள் மீது உம் கையை வையும். அவள் உடனே உயிர் பெறுவாள்.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தம் சீடர்களுடன் பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்தபொழுது, தொழுகைக் கூடத் தலைவர் ஒருவர் அவரிடம் வந்து பணிந்து, “என் மகள் இப்பொழுதுதான் இறந்தாள். ஆயினும் நீர் வந்து அவள் மீது உம் கையை வையும். அவள் உடனே உயிர் பெறுவாள்” என்றார். இயேசு எழுந்து அவர் பின்னே சென்றார். இயேசுவின் சீடர்களும் அவரைப் பின்தொடர்ந்தனர்.

அப்பொழுது பன்னிரு ஆண்டுகளாய் இரத்தப் போக்கினால் வருந்திய ஒரு பெண் அவருக்குப் பின்னால் வந்து அவரது மேலுடையின் ஓரத்தைத் தொட்டார். ஏனெனில் அப்பெண், “நான் அவருடைய ஆடையைத் தொட்டாலே போதும், நலம் பெறுவேன்” எனத் தமக்குள் சொல்லிக் கொண்டார். இயேசு அவரைத் திரும்பிப் பார்த்து, “மகளே, துணிவோடிரு; உனது நம்பிக்கை உன்னைக் குணமாக்கிற்று” என்றார். அந்நேரத்திலிருந்தே அப்பெண் நலம் அடைந்திருந்தார்.

இயேசு அத்தலைவருடைய வீட்டிற்குச் சென்றார். அங்கே குழல் ஊதுவோரையும் கூட்டத்தினரின் அமளியையும் கண்டார். அவர், “விலகிப் போங்கள்; சிறுமி இறக்கவில்லை, உறங்குகிறாள்” என்றார். அவர்களோ அவரைப் பார்த்து நகைத்தார்கள். அக்கூட்டத்தினரை வெளியேற்றிய பின் அவர் உள்ளே சென்று சிறுமியின் கையைப் பிடித்தார். அவளும் உயிர் பெற்று எழுந்தாள். இச்செய்தி அந்நாடெங்கும் பரவியது.

நிலத்தில் ஊன்றியிருந்த ஓர் ஏணியின் நுனி, மேலே வானத்தைத் தொட்டுக்கொண்டு இருந்தது. அதில் கடவுளின் தூதர் ஏறுவதும் இறங்குவதுமாய் இருந்தனர்.

அந்நாள்களில்

யாக்கோபு பெயேர்செபாவிலிருந்து புறப்பட்டு, கரானை நோக்கிச் சென்றான். அவன் ஓரிடத்திற்கு வந்தபோது கதிரவன் மறைந்துவிட்டான். எனவே அங்கே இரவைக் கழிப்பதற்காக அவ்விடத்தில் கிடந்த கற்களில் ஒன்றை எடுத்துத் தலைக்கு வைத்துக்கொண்டு, அங்கேயே படுத்து உறங்கினான்.

அப்போது அவன் கண்ட கனவு இதுவே: நிலத்தில் ஊன்றியிருந்த ஓர் ஏணியின் நுனி மேலே வானத்தைத் தொட்டுக்கொண்டு இருந்தது. அதில் கடவுளின் தூதர் ஏறுவதும் இறங்குவதுமாய் இருந்தனர். ஆண்டவர் அதற்கு மேல் நின்றுகொண்டு,

“உன் மூதாதையராகிய ஆபிரகாம், ஈசாக்கின் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவர் நானே. நீ படுத்திருக்கும் இந்த நிலத்தை உனக்கும் உன் வழிமரபிற்கும் தந்தருள்வேன். உன் வழிமரபோ நிலத்தின் மணலுக்கு ஒப்பாகும். நீ மேற்கு, கிழக்கு, வடக்கு, தெற்குத் திசைகளில் பரவிச் செல்வாய். உன்னிலும் உன் வழிமரபிலும் மண்ணுலகின் எல்லா இனங்களும் ஆசி பெறுவன. நான் உன்னோடு இருப்பேன். நீ எங்கு சென்றாலும் உனக்கு நான் காவலாய் இருந்து இந்நாட்டிற்கு உன்னைத் திரும்பி வரச் செய்வேன். ஏனெனில், நான் உனக்கு வாக்களித்ததை நிறைவேற்றுமளவும் உன்னைக் கைவிடமாட்டேன்” என்றார்.

யாக்கோபு தூக்கம் தெளிந்து, “உண்மையாகவே ஆண்டவர் இவ்விடத்தில் இருக்கிறார்; நானோ இதை அறியாதிருந்தேன்” என்று அச்சமடைந்து, “இந்த இடம் எவ்வளவு அச்சத்திற்குரியது! இதுவே இறைவனின் இல்லம், விண்ணுலகின் வாயில்” என்றார். பிறகு யாக்கோபு அதிகாலையில் எழுந்து, தலைக்கு வைத்திருந்த கல்லை எடுத்து, நினைவுத் தூணாக அதை நாட்டி, அதன் மேல் எண்ணெய் வார்த்து, ‘லூசு’ என்று வழங்கிய அந்த நகருக்குப் ‘பெத்தேல்’ என்று பெயரிட்டார்.

மேலும் அவர் நேர்ந்துகொண்டது: ‘கடவுள் என்னோடிருந்து நான் போகிற இந்த வழியில் எனக்குப் பாதுகாப்பளித்து உண்ண உணவும், உடுக்க உடையும் தந்து, என் தந்தையின் வீட்டிற்கு நான் நலமுடன் திரும்பச் செய்வாராயின், ஆண்டவரே எனக்குக் கடவுளாக இருப்பார். மேலும், நான் நினைவுத் தூணாக நாட்டிய இந்தக் கல்லே கடவுளின் இல்லம் ஆகும். மேலும், நீர் எனக்குத் தரும் யாவற்றிலும் பத்தில் ஒரு பங்கு உமக்குச் செலுத்துவேன்.'

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 9: 18-26

While Jesus was speaking, up came one of the officials, who bowed low in front of him and said, ‘My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her and her life will be saved.’ Jesus rose and, with his disciples, followed him. Then from behind him came a woman, who had suffered from a haemorrhage for twelve years, and she touched the fringe of his cloak, for she said to herself, ‘If I can only touch his cloak I shall be well again.’ Jesus turned round and saw her; and he said to her, ‘Courage, my daughter, your faith has restored you to health.’ And from that moment the woman was well again.

  When Jesus reached the official’s house and saw the flute-players, with the crowd making a commotion he said, ‘Get out of here; the little girl is not dead, she is asleep.’ And they laughed at him. But when the people had been turned out he went inside and took the little girl by the hand; and she stood up. And the news spread all round the countryside.

Jacob's dream of the ladder at Bethel

A Reading from the Book of Genesis 28:10-22 

Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Haran. When he had reached a certain place he passed the night there, since the sun had set. Taking one of the stones to be found at that place, he made it his pillow and lay down where he was. He had a dream: a ladder was there, standing on the ground with its top reaching to heaven; and there were angels of God going up it and coming down. And the Lord was there, standing over him, saying, ‘I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac. I will give to you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. Your descendants shall be like the specks of dust on the ground; you shall spread to the west and the east, to the north and the south, and all the tribes of the earth shall bless themselves by you and your descendants.

  ‘Be sure that I am with you; I will keep you safe wherever you go, and bring you back to this land, for I will not desert you before I have done all that I have promised you.’

  Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, ‘Truly, the Lord is in this place and I never knew it!’ He was afraid and said, ‘How awe-inspiring this place is! This is nothing less than a house of God; this is the gate of heaven!’ Rising early in the morning, Jacob took the stone he had used for his pillow, and set it up as a monument, pouring oil over the top of it. He named the place Bethel, but before that the town was called Luz.

  Jacob made this vow, ‘If God goes with me and keeps me safe on this journey I am making, if he gives me bread to eat and clothes to wear, and if I return home safely to my father, then the Lord shall be my God. This stone I have set up as a monument shall be a house of God.’
