Husband and wife are no longer two, but one body

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 19:3-12 

Some Pharisees approached Jesus, and to test him they said, ‘Is it against the Law for a man to divorce his wife on any pretext whatever?’ He answered, ‘Have you not read that the creator from the beginning made them male and female and that he said: This is why a man must leave father and mother, and cling to his wife, and the two become one body? They are no longer two, therefore, but one body. So then, what God has united, man must not divide.’

  They said to him, ‘Then why did Moses command that a writ of dismissal should be given in cases of divorce?’ ‘It was because you were so unteachable’ he said ‘that Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but it was not like this from the beginning. Now I say this to you: the man who divorces his wife – I am not speaking of fornication – and marries another, is guilty of adultery.’

  The disciples said to him, ‘If that is how things are between husband and wife, it is not advisable to marry.’ But he replied, ‘It is not everyone who can accept what I have said, but only those to whom it is granted. There are eunuchs born that way from their mother’s womb, there are eunuchs made so by men and there are eunuchs who have made themselves that way for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let anyone accept this who can.’

A reading from the book of Joshua 24:1-13 

Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel together at Shechem; then he called the elders, leaders, judges and scribes of Israel, and they presented themselves before God. Then Joshua said to all the people:

  ‘The Lord, the God of Israel says this, “In ancient days your ancestors lived beyond the River – such was Terah the father of Abraham and of Nahor – and they served other gods. Then I brought your father Abraham from beyond the River and led him through all the land of Canaan. I increased his descendants and gave him Isaac. To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I gave the mountain country of Seir as his possession. Jacob and his sons went down into Egypt. Then I sent Moses and Aaron and plagued Egypt with the wonders that I worked there. So I brought you out of it. I brought your ancestors out of Egypt, and you came to the Sea; the Egyptians pursued your ancestors with chariots and horsemen as far as the Sea of Reeds. There they called to the Lord, and he spread a thick fog between you and the Egyptians, and made the sea go back on them and cover them. You saw with your own eyes the things I did in Egypt. Then for a long time you lived in the wilderness, until I brought you into the land of the Amorites who lived beyond the Jordan; they made war on you and I gave them into your hands; you took possession of their country because I destroyed them before you. Next, Balak son of Zippor the king of Moab arose to make war on Israel, and sent for Balaam son of Beor to come and curse you. But I would not listen to Balaam; instead, he had to bless you, and I saved you from his hand.

  ‘“When you crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho, those who held Jericho fought against you, as did the Amorites and Perizzites, the Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites, but I put them all into your power. I sent out hornets in front of you, which drove the two Amorite kings before you; this was not the work of your sword or your bow. I gave you a land where you never toiled, you live in towns you never built; you eat now from vineyards and olive-groves you never planted.”’

அக்காலத்தில்

பரிசேயர் இயேசுவை அணுகி, அவரைச் சோதிக்கும் நோக்குடன், “ஒருவர் தம் மனைவியை எக்காரணத்தையாவது முன்னிட்டு விலக்கி விடுவது முறையா?” என்று கேட்டனர்.

அவர் மறுமொழியாக, “படைப்பின் தொடக்கத்திலேயே கடவுள் ‘ஆணும் பெண்ணுமாக அவர்களைப் படைத்தார்’ என்று நீங்கள் மறைநூலில் வாசித்ததில்லையா?” என்று கேட்டார்.

மேலும் அவர், “இதனால் கணவன் தன் தாய் தந்தையை விட்டுவிட்டுத் தன் மனைவியுடன் ஒன்றித்திருப்பான். இருவரும் ஒரே உடலாய் இருப்பர். இனி அவர்கள் இருவர் அல்ல; ஒரே உடல். எனவே கடவுள் இணைத்ததை மனிதர் பிரிக்காதிருக்கட்டும்” என்றார்.

அவர்கள் அவரைப் பார்த்து, “அப்படியானால் மணவிலக்குச் சான்றிதழைக் கொடுத்து மனைவியை விலக்கி விடலாம் என்று மோசே கட்டளையிட்டது ஏன்?” என்றார்கள்.

அதற்கு அவர், “உங்கள் கடின உள்ளத்தின் பொருட்டே உங்கள் மனைவியரை விலக்கிவிடலாம் என்று மோசே உங்களுக்கு அனுமதி அளித்தார். ஆனால் தொடக்கமுதல் அவ்வாறு இல்லை. பரத்தைமையில் ஈடுபட்டதற்காக அன்றி வேறு எக்காரணத்தையாவது முன்னிட்டுத் தன் மனைவியை விலக்கிவிட்டு வேறொரு பெண்ணை மணப்பவன் எவனும் விபசாரம் செய்கிறான் என நான் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்” என்றார்.

அவருடைய சீடர்கள் அவரை நோக்கி, “கணவர் மனைவியர் உறவு நிலை இத்தகையது என்றால் திருமணம் செய்துகொள்ளாதிருப்பதே நல்லது” என்றார்கள். அதற்கு அவர், “அருள்கொடை பெற்றவரன்றி வேறு எவரும் இக்கூற்றை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள முடியாது. சிலர் பிறவியிலேயே மணஉறவு கொள்ள முடியாதவராய் இருக்கின்றனர். வேறு சிலர் மனிதரால் அந்நிலைக்கு ஆளாக்கப்படுகின்றனர். மற்றும் சிலர் விண்ணரசின் பொருட்டு அந்நிலைக்குத் தம்மையே ஆளாக்கிக் கொள்கின்றனர். இதை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளக் கூடியவர் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளட்டும்” என்றார்.

உங்கள் தந்தையரை எகிப்திலிருந்து வெளியே கொணர்ந்தேன்.

அந்நாள்களில்

செக்கேமில் யோசுவா இஸ்ரயேலின் எல்லாக் குலங்களையும் ஒன்று கூட்டினார். இஸ்ரயேலின் முதியோர்களையும் தலைவர்களையும் நடுவர்களையும் அதிகாரிகளையும் அழைத்தார். அவர்கள் கடவுள் முன்னிலையில் ஒன்றுகூடினர். யோசுவா எல்லா மக்களுக்கும் கூறியது:

“இஸ்ரயேலின் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவர் இவ்வாறு கூறுகின்றார்: ‘முற்காலத்தில் ஆபிரகாம், நாகோர் ஆகியோரின் தந்தை தேரா உட்பட்ட உங்கள் மூதாதையர் நதிக்கு அப்பால் வாழ்ந்தபொழுது அவர்கள் மற்ற தெய்வங்களுக்கு ஊழியம் செய்தனர். உங்கள் தந்தையாகிய ஆபிரகாமை நதிக்கு அப்பாலிருந்து அழைத்து வந்து, கானான் நாடு முழுவதிலும் நடத்திச் சென்றேன்; அவனது வழிமரபைப் பெருக்கினேன்; அவனுக்கு ஈசாக்கை அளித்தேன். ஈசாக்கிற்கு யாக்கோபையும் ஏசாவையும் அளித்தேன்; ஏசாவுக்கு செபீர் மலையை உடைமையாக அளித்தேன். யாக்கோபும் அவன் மக்களும் எகிப்திற்குச் சென்றனர்.

யோர்தானுக்குக் கிழக்கில் வாழும் எமோரியரின் நாட்டுக்கு உங்களைக் கொண்டு வந்தேன். அவர்கள் உங்களுடன் போரிட்டார்கள். நான் அவர்களை உங்கள் கையில் ஒப்படைத்தேன். அவர்களது நிலத்தை நீங்கள் உடைமையாக்கிக் கொண்டீர்கள். உங்கள் முன்னிருந்து அவர்களை அழித்து ஒழித்தேன். மோவாபின் அரசன் சிப்போரின் மகன் பாலாக்கு இஸ்ரயேலுக்கு எதிராகப் படை திரட்டிப் போர் தொடுத்தான். உங்களைச் சபிக்குமாறு பேகோரின் மகன் பிலயாமை அழைக்க ஆள் அனுப்பினான். நான் பிலயாமுக்குச் செவிகொடுக்க விரும்பவில்லை. அவன் உங்களுக்கு ஆசி வழங்கினான். உங்களைப் பாலாக்கின் கையினின்று விடுவித்தேன்.

நீங்கள் யோர்தானைக் கடந்து எரிகோவுக்கு வந்தீர்கள். எரிகோவின் மக்களும், எமோரியரும், பெரிசியரும், கானானியரும், இத்தியரும், கிர்காசியரும், இவ்வியரும், எபூசியரும், உங்களுக்கு எதிராகப் போர் தொடுத்தனர். அவர்களையும் உங்கள் கையில் ஒப்படைத்தேன். நான் உங்களுக்கு முன்னே குளவிகளை அனுப்பினேன். அவை உங்கள் முன்னிருந்து இரு எமோரிய அரசர்களை விரட்டின. இது நிகழ்ந்தது உங்கள் வாளாலும் அன்று; உங்கள் அம்பாலும் அன்று. நீங்கள் உழுது பயிரிடாத நிலத்தில் அறுவடை செய்தீர்கள். நீங்கள் கட்டாத நகர்களில் நீங்கள் வாழ்கின்றீர்கள். நீங்கள் நடாத திராட்சை, ஒலிவத் தோட்டங்களின் பயனை நீங்கள் நுகர்கின்றீர்கள். இவை அனைத்தும் நான் உங்களுக்குக் கொடுத்தவையே.”

ஆண்டவர் யோசுவாவிடம், “இன்று இஸ்ரயேலர் அனைவரின் பார்வையில் உன்னை உயர்த்தத் தொடங்குகிறேன். அதனால் நான் மோசேயுடன் இருந்ததுபோல் உன்னோடும் இருப்பேன் என்று அவர்கள் அறிந்து கொள்வார்கள். உடன்படிக்கைப் பேழையைத் தூக்கிவரும் குருக்கள் யோர்தான் ஆற்றங்கரைக்கு வந்தவுடன் அங்கேயே நிற்குமாறு அவர்களுக்குக் கட்டளையிடு” என்றார்.

யோசுவா இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களிடம், “இங்கே வாருங்கள், உங்கள் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரின் வார்த்தைகளைக் கேளுங்கள். வாழும் இறைவன் உங்களிடையே இருக்கின்றார் என்று இதனால் அறிவீர்கள். இதோ, உலகனைத்தின் ஆண்டவரது உடன்படிக்கைப் பேழை உங்கள்முன் யோர்தானைக் கடக்கின்றது. உலகனைத்தின் ஆண்டவரது உடன்படிக்கைப் பேழையைத் தூக்கிச் செல்லும் குருக்களின் காலடிகள் யோர்தான் நீரில் பட்டவுடன் அத்தண்ணீர் பிரிந்து போகும். மேற்பகுதியிலிருந்து ஓடிவரும் தண்ணீர் குவியலாக நிற்கும்” என்றார்.

மக்கள் தங்கள் கூடாரங்களிலிருந்து யோர்தானைக் கடக்கப் புறப்படும்போது குருக்கள் உடன்படிக்கைப் பேழையைத் தூக்கிக் கொண்டு மக்கள் முன்னே சென்றனர். உடன்படிக்கைப் பேழையைத் தூக்கிச் சென்ற குருக்கள் யோர்தானை அடைந்தனர். அவர்கள் காலடிகள் யோர்தான் நீரின் விளிம்பில் நனைந்தவுடன், மேற்பகுதியிலிருந்து ஓடிவந்த யோர்தான் நீர் வெகுதொலையில் நின்றது. அறுவடை நாள்களில் இந்நதி கரைபுரண்டு ஓடும். மேற்பகுதியிலிருந்து வந்த நீர், சாரத்தானின் அருகில் இருந்து ஆதாம் நகருக்கு எதிரில் வெகுதொலையில் மேலெழும்பி நின்றது. கீழே ஓடிய நீர் பாலைநிலக் கடலாகிய சாக்கடல் வரை ஓடிமறைந்தது. மக்களும் எரிகோவுக்கு நேர் எதிராகக் கடந்து சென்றனர். இஸ்ரயேலர் அனைவரும் கடந்து முடிக்கும்வரை, ஆண்டவரது உடன்படிக்கைப் பேழையைத் தூக்கிச் சென்ற குருக்கள் யோர்தான் நடுவே வறண்ட தரையில் நின்றனர். எல்லா இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களும் அவ்வறண்ட தரை வழியாக நடந்தனர்.
