சீசருக்கு உரியவற்றைச் சீசருக்கும் கடவுளுக்கு உரியவற்றைக் கடவுளுக்கும் கொடுங்கள்.

அக்காலத்தில்

பரிசேயர் இயேசுவை அவருடைய பேச்சில் சிக்க வைக்க ஏரோதியர் சிலரை அவரிடம் அனுப்பி வைத்தனர். அவர்கள் அவரிடம் வந்து, “போதகரே, நீர் உண்மையுள்ளவர்; ஆள் பார்த்துச் செயல்படாதவர்; எவரையும் பொருட்படுத்தாமல் கடவுளின் நெறியை உண்மைக்கு ஏற்பக் கற்பிப்பவர் என்பது எங்களுக்குத் தெரியும். சீசருக்கு வரி செலுத்துவது முறையா, இல்லையா? நாங்கள் செலுத்தட்டுமா, வேண்டாமா?” என்று கேட்டார்கள்.

அவர் அவர்களுடைய வெளிவேடத்தைப் புரிந்துகொண்டு, “ஏன் என்னைச் சோதிக்கிறீர்கள்? என்னிடம் ஒரு தெனாரியம் கொண்டு வாருங்கள். நான் பார்க்க வேண்டும்” என்றார். அவர்கள் அதைக் கொண்டுவந்தார்கள். இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “இதில் பொறிக்கப்பட்டுள்ள உருவமும் எழுத்தும் யாருடையவை?” என்று கேட்டார். அவர்கள் அவரிடம், “சீசருடையவை” என்றார்கள்.

அதற்கு இயேசு அவர்களை நோக்கி, “சீசருக்கு உரியவற்றைச் சீசருக்கும் கடவுளுக்கு உரியவற்றைக் கடவுளுக்கும் கொடுங்கள்” என்றார். அவர்கள் அவரைக் குறித்து வியப்படைந்தார்கள்.

 கடவுளுடைய அழைப்பு உங்களுக்கு எத்தகைய எதிர்நோக்கைத் தந்துள்ளது என்று நீங்கள் அறியுமாறு நம் ஆண்டவராகிய இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் கடவுளும் மாட்சிமிகு தந்தையுமானவர் நம் அகக் கண்களுக்கு ஒளி தருவாராக. அல்லேலூயா.

தோபித்து கூறியது:

அன்று இரவு குளித்துவிட்டு என் வீட்டு முற்றத்தின் சுவர் அருகில் படுத்து உறங்கினேன். வெப்பமாக இருந்ததால் என் முகத்தை மூடவில்லை. என் தலைக்குமேல் சுவரில் குருவிகள் இருந்தது எனக்குத் தெரியாது. அவற்றின் சூடான எச்சம் என் கண்களில் விழுந்தது. உடனே கண்களில் வெண் புள்ளிகள் தோன்றின. நலம் பெறுமாறு மருத்துவர்களிடம் சென்றேன். அவர்கள் எவ்வளவோ மருத்துவம் செய்தும் வெண் புள்ளிகளால் என் பார்வை குன்றிவந்தது. இறுதியாகப் பார்வையை முற்றும் இழந்தேன். நான் பார்வையற்றவனாக நான்கு ஆண்டுகள் வாழ்ந்தேன். என் உறவின் முறையார் அனைவரும் எனக்காக வருந்தினர். எலிமாய் செல்லும்வரை இரண்டு ஆண்டுகளாக அகிக்கார் என்னைப் பேணிவந்தான்.

அக்காலத்தில் என் மனைவி அன்னா பெண்களுக்குரிய கைவேலைகளில் ஈடுபட்டிருந்தாள். தன் கைவேலைப்பாடுகளை அவள் உரிமையாளர்களுக்கு அனுப்பிவைக்க, அவர்கள் அவளுக்குக் கூலி கொடுப்பார்கள். திசித்தர் மாதம் ஏழாம் நாள் தான் நெய்திருந்ததை உரிமையாளர்களுக்கு அவள் அனுப்பிவைத்தாள். அவர்கள் அவளுக்கு முழுக் கூலியுடன், விருந்து சமைக்க ஓர் ஆட்டுக்குட்டியையும் கொடுத்தார்கள். அவள் திரும்பி வந்தபொழுது ஆட்டுக்குட்டி கத்தத் தொடங்கியது. உடனே நான் அவளை அழைத்து, “இந்த ஆட்டுக்குட்டி எங்கிருந்து வந்தது?” என்று கேட்டேன். “ஒரு வேளை இது திருடப்பட்டதோ? அப்படியானால் உரியவரிடம் இதைத் திருப்பிக்கொடுத்துவிடு; ஏனெனில் திருடிய எதையும் உண்ண நமக்கு உரிமை இல்லை” என்றேன். அதற்கு அவள் என்னிடம், “கூலிக்கு மேலாக இது எனக்கு அன்பளிப்பாகக் கொடுக்கப்பட்டது” என்றாள். இருப்பினும் நான் அவளை நம்பவில்லை. உரியவருக்கு அதைத் திருப்பிக் கொடுத்துவிடுமாறு வற்புறுத்தினேன். அவளது செயலைக் குறித்து நான் நாணினேன். அப்பொழுது அவள் மறுமொழியாக என்னிடம், “உம்முடைய தருமங்கள் எங்கே? நற்செயல்கள் எங்கே? உம்முடைய குணம் இப்பொழுது நன்றாகவே புலப்படுகிறது!” என்றாள்.

Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 12:13-17 

The chief priests and the scribes and the elders sent to Jesus some Pharisees and some Herodians to catch him out in what he said. These came and said to him, ‘Master, we know you are an honest man, that you are not afraid of anyone, because a man’s rank means nothing to you, and that you teach the way of God in all honesty. Is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay, yes or no?’ Seeing through their hypocrisy he said to them, ‘Why do you set this trap for me? Hand me a denarius and let me see it.’ They handed him one and he said, ‘Whose head is this? Whose name?’ ‘Caesar’s’ they told him. Jesus said to them, ‘Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar – and to God what belongs to God.’ This reply took them completely by surprise.

A Reading from the Book of Tobit 2: 9-14.

I, Tobit, took a bath; then I went into the courtyard and lay down by the courtyard wall. Since it was hot I left my face uncovered. I did not know that there were sparrows in the wall above my head; their hot droppings fell into my eyes. White spots then formed, which I was obliged to have treated by the doctors. But the more ointments they tried me with, the more the spots blinded me, and in the end I became blind altogether. I remained without sight four years; all my brothers were distressed; and Ahikar provided for my upkeep for two years, till he left for Elymais.

  My wife Anna then undertook woman’s work; she would spin wool and take cloth to weave; she used to deliver whatever had been ordered from her and then receive payment. Now on March the seventh she finished a piece of work and delivered it to her customers. They paid her all that was due, and into the bargain presented her with a kid for a meal. When the kid came into my house, it began to bleat. I called to my wife and said, ‘Where does this creature come from? Suppose it has been stolen! Quick, let the owners have it back; we have no right to eat stolen goods.’ She said, ‘No, it was a present given me over and above my wages.’ I did not believe her, and told her to give it back to the owners (I blushed at this in her presence). Then she answered, ‘What about your own alms? What about your own good works? Everyone knows what return you have had for them.’
