பிப்ரவரி 17 :  நற்செய்தி வாசகம்

என் பொருட்டும் நற்செய்தியின் பொருட்டும் தம் உயிரை இழப்பவர், அதைக் காத்துக்கொள்வர்.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு மக்கள் கூட்டத்தையும் சீடரையும் தம்மிடம் வரவழைத்து, “என்னைப் பின்பற்ற விரும்பும் எவரும் தன்னலம் துறந்து, தம் சிலுவையைத் தூக்கிக்கொண்டு என்னைப் பின்பற்றட்டும். ஏனெனில் தம் உயிரைக் காத்துக்கொள்ள விரும்பும் எவரும் அதை இழந்து விடுவார்; என் பொருட்டும் நற்செய்தியின் பொருட்டும் தம் உயிரை இழக்கும் எவரும் அதைக் காத்துக்கொள்வார்.

ஒருவர் உலகம் முழுவதையும் தமதாக்கிக் கொண்டாலும் தம் வாழ்வையே இழப்பார் எனில் அவருக்குக் கிடைக்கும் பயன் என்ன? அவர் தம் வாழ்வுக்கு ஈடாக எதைக் கொடுப்பார்? பாவத்தில் உழலும் இவ்விபசாரத் தலைமுறையினருள், என்னைக் குறித்தும் என் வார்த்தைகளைக் குறித்தும் வெட்கப்படும் ஒவ்வொருவரையும் பற்றி மானிட மகனும் தம்முடைய தந்தையின் மாட்சியோடு தூய வானதூதருடன் வரும்போது வெட்கப் படுவார்” என்றார்.

மேலும் அவர் அவர்களிடம், “இங்கே இருப்பவர்களுள் சிலர் இறையாட்சி வல்லமையோடு வந்துள்ளதைக் காண்பதற்குமுன் சாகமாட்டார்கள் என உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்” என்றார்.

அந்நாள்களில்

உலகம் முழுவதிலும் ஒரே மொழியும் ஒரே விதமான சொற்களும் இருந்தன. மக்கள் கிழக்கிலிருந்து புறப்பட்டு வந்து சினயார் நாட்டில் சமவெளி ஒன்றைக் கண்டு, அங்கே குடியேறினர். அப்பொழுது அவர்கள், ஒருவரை ஒருவர் நோக்கி, “வாருங்கள், நாம் செங்கற்கள் அறுத்து அவற்றை நன்றாகச் சுடுவோம்” என்றனர். அவர்கள் செங்கல்லைக் கல்லாகவும் கீலைக் காரையாகவும் பயன்படுத்தினர்.

பின், அவர்கள் “வாருங்கள், உலகம் முழுவதும் நாம் சிதறுண்டு போகாதபடி வானளாவிய கோபுரம் கொண்ட நகர் ஒன்றை நமக்காகக் கட்டி எழுப்பி, நமது பெயரை நிலைநாட்டுவோம்” என்றனர்.

மானிடர் கட்டிக்கொண்டிருந்த நகரையும் கோபுரத்தையும் காண்பதற்கு ஆண்டவர் கீழே இறங்கி வந்தார். அப்பொழுது ஆண்டவர், “இதோ! மக்கள் ஒன்றாக இருக்கின்றனர். அவர்கள் எல்லாரும் ஒரே மொழி பேசுகின்ற னர். அவர்கள் செய்யவிருப்பதன் தொடக்கமே இது! அவர்கள் திட்டமிட்டுச் செய்யவிருப்பது எதையும் இனித் தடுத்து நிறுத்த முடியாது. வாருங்கள், நாம் கீழே போய் அங்கே ஒருவர் மற்றவரின் பேச்சைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள முடியாதபடி, அவர்கள் மொழியில் குழப்பத்தை உண்டாக்குவோம்” என்றார்.

ஆண்டவர் அவர்களை அங்கிருந்து உலகம் முழுவதிலும் சிதறுண்டு போகச் செய்ததால் அவர்கள் நகரைத் தொடர்ந்து கட்டுவதைக் கைவிட்டனர். ஆகவே அது “பாபேல்” என்று வழங்கப்பட்டது. ஏனெனில் அங்கே ஆண்டவர் உலகெங்கும் வழங்கி வந்த மொழியில் குழப்பத்தை உண்டாக்கினார். அங்கிருந்து அவர்களை ஆண்டவர் உலகம் முழுவதிலும் சிதறுண்டு போகச் செய்தார்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 8:34-9:1

Jesus called the people and his disciples to him and said:

  ‘If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me. For anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. What gain, then, is it for a man to win the whole world and ruin his life? And indeed what can a man offer in exchange for his life? For if anyone in this adulterous and sinful generation is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.’ And he said to them, ‘I tell you solemnly, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power.’

The tower of Babel

A Reading from the Book of Genesis 11:1-9 

Throughout the earth men spoke the same language, with the same vocabulary. Now as they moved eastwards they found a plain in the land of Shinar where they settled. They said to one another, ‘Come, let us make bricks and bake them in the fire.’ (For stone they used bricks, and for mortar they used bitumen). ‘Come,’ they said ‘let us build ourselves a town and a tower with its top reaching heaven. Let us make a name for ourselves, so that we may not be scattered about the whole earth.’

  Now the Lord came down to see the town and the tower that the sons of man had built. ‘So they are all a single people with a single language!’ said the Lord. ‘This is but the start of their undertakings! There will be nothing too hard for them to do. Come, let us go down and confuse their language on the spot so that they can no longer understand one another.’ The Lord scattered them thence over the whole face of the earth, and they stopped building the town. It was named Babel therefore, because there the Lord confused the language of the whole earth. It was from there that the Lord scattered them over the whole face of the earth.
