அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு பேதுருவையும் யோவானையும் யாக்கோபையும் கூட்டிக் கொண்டு இறைவனிடம் வேண்டுவதற்காக ஒரு மலைமீது ஏறினார். அவர் வேண்டிக்கொண்டிருந்தபோது அவரது முகத்தோற்றம் மாறியது; அவருடைய ஆடையும் வெண்மையாய் மின்னியது. மோசே, எலியா என்னும் இருவர் அவரோடு பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்தனர். மாட்சியுடன் தோன்றிய அவர்கள் எருசலேமில் நிறைவேற இருந்த அவருடைய இறப்பைப்பற்றிப் பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். பேதுருவும் அவரோடு இருந்தவர்களும் தூக்கக் கலக்கமாய் இருந்தார்கள். அவர்கள் விழித்தபோது மாட்சியோடு இலங்கிய அவரையும் அவரோடு நின்ற இருவரையும் கண்டார்கள்.

அவ்விருவரும் அவரைவிட்டுப் பிரிந்து சென்றபோது, பேதுரு இயேசுவை நோக்கி, “ஆண்டவரே, நாம் இங்கேயே இருப்பது நல்லது. உமக்கு ஒன்றும் மோசேக்கு ஒன்றும் எலியாவுக்கு ஒன்றுமாக மூன்று கூடாரங்களை அமைப்போம்” என்று தாம் சொல்வது இன்னதென்று தெரியாமலே சொன்னார். இவற்றை அவர் சொல்லிக்கொண்டிருக்கும் போது ஒரு மேகம் வந்து அவர்கள்மேல் நிழலிட்டது. அம்மேகம் அவர்களைச் சூழ்ந்தபோது அவர்கள் அஞ்சினார்கள்.

அந்த மேகத்தினின்று, “இவரே என் மைந்தர்; நான் தேர்ந்து கொண்டவர் இவரே. இவருக்குச் செவிசாயுங்கள்” என்று ஒரு குரல் ஒலித்தது. அந்தக் குரல் கேட்டபொழுது இயேசு மட்டும் இருந்தார். தாங்கள் கண்டவற்றில் எதையும் அவர்கள் அந்நாள்களில் யாருக்கும் சொல்லாமல் அமைதி காத்தார்கள்.

ஆண்டவரின் அருள்வாக்கு.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

நீங்கள் அனைவரும் என்னைப்போல் வாழுங்கள். நாங்கள் உங்களுக்குக் காட்டிய முன்மாதிரியின்படி வாழ்பவர்களைப் பின்பற்றுங்கள். கிறிஸ்துவின் சிலுவைக்குப் பகைவர்களாய் நடப்போர் பலர் உள்ளனர். அவர்களைப்பற்றி மீண்டும் மீண்டும் உங்களிடம் கூறியுள்ளேன். இப்பொழுதும் கண்ணீரோடு சொல்கிறேன். அழிவே அவர்கள் முடிவு; வயிறே அவர்கள் தெய்வம்; மானக்கேடே அவர்கள் பெருமை; அவர்கள் எண்ணுவதெல்லாம் மண்ணுலகைச் சார்ந்தவை பற்றியே.

நமக்கோ விண்ணகமே தாய்நாடு; அங்கிருந்துதான் மீட்பராம் ஆண்டவர் இயேசு கிறிஸ்து வருவாரெனக் காத்திருக்கிறோம். அவர் தமது ஆற்றலால் தாழ்வுக்குரிய நம் உடலை மாட்சிக்குரிய தமது உடலின் சாயலாக உருமாற்றவும் அனைத்தையும் தமக்குப் பணியவைக்கவும் வல்லவர்.

ஆகவே என் அன்பார்ந்த சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே, என் வாஞ்சைக்குரியவர்களே, நீங்களே என் மகிழ்ச்சி; நீங்களே, என் வெற்றி வாகை; அன்பர்களே, ஆண்டவரோடு உள்ள உறவில் நிலைத்திருங்கள்.

அந்நாள்களில்

ஆண்டவர் ஆபிராமை வெளியே அழைத்து வந்து, “வானத்தை நிமிர்ந்து பார். முடியுமானால், விண்மீன்களை எண்ணிப் பார். இவற்றைப் போலவே உன் வழி மரபினரும் இருப்பர்” என்றார். ஆபிராம் ஆண்டவர்மீது நம்பிக்கை கொண்டார். அதை ஆண்டவர் அவருக்கு நீதியாகக் கருதினார்.

ஆண்டவர் ஆபிராமிடம், “இந்நாட்டை உனக்கு உரிமைச் சொத்தாக அளிக்க உன்னைக் கல்தேயரின் ஊர் என்ற நகரிலிருந்து இங்கு அழைத்து வந்த ஆண்டவர் நானே” என்றார். அதற்கு ஆபிராம், “என் தலைவராகிய ஆண்டவரே, இதை நான் உரிமையாக்கிக் கொள்வேன் என்பதை எப்படித் தெரிந்துகொள்வேன்?” என்றார். ஆண்டவர் ஆபிராமிடம், “மூன்று வயதுள்ள இளம் பசு, மூன்று வயதுள்ள வெள்ளாடு, மூன்று வயதுள்ள செம்மறியாடு, ஒரு காட்டுப்புறா, ஒரு மாடப்புறா ஆகியவற்றை என்னிடம் கொண்டுவா” என்றார். ஆபிராம் இவற்றை எல்லாம் அவரிடம் கொண்டு வந்து, அவைகளை இரண்டிரண்டு கூறுகளாக வெட்டி, ஒவ்வொரு பகுதியையும் அததற்கு இணையான பகுதிக்கு எதிரெதிரே வைத்தார். ஆனால் பறவைகளை அவர் வெட்டவில்லை. துண்டித்த உடல்களைப் பறவைகள் தின்ன வந்தபொழுது ஆபிராம் அவற்றை விரட்டிவிட்டார்.

கதிரவன் மறையும் நேரத்தில் ஆபிராமுக்கு ஆழ்ந்த உறக்கம் வந்தது. அச்சுறுத்தும் காரிருள் அவரைச் சூழ்ந்தது.

கதிரவன் மறைந்ததும் இருள் படர்ந்தது. அப்பொழுது புகைந்து கொண்டிருந்த தீச்சட்டி ஒன்றும் எரிந்துகொண்டிருந்த தீப்பந்தம் ஒன்றும் அந்தக் கூறுகளுக்கிடையே சென்றன.

அன்றே ஆண்டவர் ஆபிராமுடன் ஓர் உடன்படிக்கை செய்து, “எகிப்திலுள்ள ஆற்றிலிருந்து யூப்பிரத்தீசு பேராறு வரை உள்ள இந்நாட்டை உன் வழிமரபினர்க்கு வழங்குவேன்” என்றார்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 9:28-36 

Jesus took with him Peter and John and James and went up the mountain to pray. As he prayed, the aspect of his face was changed and his clothing became brilliant as lightning. Suddenly there were two men there talking to him; they were Moses and Elijah appearing in glory, and they were speaking of his passing which he was to accomplish in Jerusalem. Peter and his companions were heavy with sleep, but they kept awake and saw his glory and the two men standing with him. As these were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, ‘Master, it is wonderful for us to be here; so let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.’ – He did not know what he was saying. As he spoke, a cloud came and covered them with shadow; and when they went into the cloud the disciples were afraid. And a voice came from the cloud saying, ‘This is my Son, the Chosen One. Listen to him.’ And after the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. The disciples kept silence and, at that time, told no one what they had seen.

Our homeland is in heaven, and from heaven comes Christ to transfigure us

A Reading from the Letter of St.Paul to the Philippians 3:17-4:1 

My brothers, be united in following my rule of life. Take as your models everybody who is already doing this and study them as you used to study us. I have told you often, and I repeat it today with tears, there are many who are behaving as the enemies of the cross of Christ. They are destined to be lost. They make foods into their god and they are proudest of something they ought to think shameful; the things they think important are earthly things. For us, our homeland is in heaven, and from heaven comes the saviour we are waiting for, the Lord Jesus Christ, and he will transfigure these wretched bodies of ours into copies of his glorious body. He will do that by the same power with which he can subdue the whole universe.

  So then, my brothers and dear friends, do not give way but remain faithful in the Lord. I miss you very much, dear friends; you are my joy and my crown.

God enters into a Covenant with Abraham, the man of faith

A Reading from the Book of Genesis 15:5-12,17-18 

Taking Abram outside, the Lord said, ‘Look up to heaven and count the stars if you can.’ ‘Such will be your descendants,’ he told him. Abram put his faith in the Lord, who counted this as making him justified.

  ‘I am the Lord’ he said to him ‘who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldaeans to make you heir to this land.’ ‘My Lord,’ Abram replied ‘how am I to know that I shall inherit it?’ He said to him, ‘Get me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove and a young pigeon.’ He brought him all these, cut them in half and put half on one side and half facing it on the other; but the birds he did not cut in half. Birds of prey came down on the carcases but Abram drove them off.

  Now as the sun was setting Abram fell into a deep sleep, and terror seized him. When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, there appeared a smoking furnace and a firebrand that went between the halves. That day the Lord made a Covenant with Abram in these terms:

‘To your descendants I give this land,

from the wadi of Egypt to the Great River.’
