Jesus came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord’s feet and listened to him speaking. Now Martha who was distracted with all the serving said, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself? Please tell her to help me.’ But the Lord answered: ‘Martha, Martha,’ he said ‘you worry and fret about so many things, and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part; it is not to be taken from her.’

God called me through his grace and chose to reveal his Son in me

A Reading from the Letter of St.Paul to Galatians 1:13-24 

You must have heard of my career as a practising Jew, how merciless I was in persecuting the Church of God, how much damage I did to it, how I stood out among other Jews of my generation, and how enthusiastic I was for the traditions of my ancestors.

  Then God, who had specially chosen me while I was still in my mother’s womb, called me through his grace and chose to reveal his Son in me, so that I might preach the Good News about him to the pagans. I did not stop to discuss this with any human being, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to see those who were already apostles before me, but I went off to Arabia at once and later went straight back from there to Damascus. Even when after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and stayed with him for fifteen days, I did not see any of the other apostles; I only saw James, the brother of the Lord, and I swear before God that what I have just written is the literal truth. After that I went to Syria and Cilicia, and was still not known by sight to the churches of Christ in Judaea, who had heard nothing except that their one-time persecutor was now preaching the faith he had previously tried to destroy; and they gave glory to God for me.

இயேசு தம் சீடர்களுடன் ஓர் ஊருக்குச் சென்றார். அங்கே பெண் ஒருவர் அவரைத் தம் வீட்டில் வரவேற்றார். அவர் பெயர் மார்த்தா. அவருக்கு மரியா என்னும் சகோதரி ஒருவர் இருந்தார். மரியா ஆண்டவருடைய காலடி அருகில் அமர்ந்து அவர் சொல்வதைக் கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்தார்.

ஆனால் மார்த்தா பற்பல பணிகள் புரிவதில் பரபரப்பாகி இயேசுவிடம் வந்து, “ஆண்டவரே, நான் பணிவிடை செய்ய என் சகோதரி என்னைத் தனியே விட்டுவிட்டாளே, உமக்குக் கவலையில்லையா? எனக்கு உதவி புரியும்படி அவளிடம் சொல்லும்” என்றார்.

ஆண்டவர் அவரைப் பார்த்து, “மார்த்தா, மார்த்தா! நீ பலவற்றைப் பற்றிக் கவலைப்பட்டுக் கலங்குகிறாய். ஆனால் தேவையானது ஒன்றே. மரியாவோ நல்ல பங்கைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்துக் கொண்டாள்; அது அவளிடமிருந்து எடுக்கப்படாது” என்றார்.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

பவுல் ஆகிய நான் யூத நெறியைப் பின்பற்றி வந்த காலத்தில் எவ்வாறு நடந்துகொண்டேன் என்பதுபற்றி நீங்கள் கேள்விப்பட்டிருப்பீர்கள். கடவுளின் திருச்சபையை மிகக் கொடுமையாகத் துன்புறுத்தி ஒழிக்க முயன்றேன். மூதாதையர் மரபுகளில் ஆர்வம் மிக்கவனாய் என் இனத்தவருள் என் வயதினர் பலரைவிட யூத நெறியில் சிறந்து விளங்கினேன். ஆனால் தாயின் வயிற்றில் இருந்தபோதே என்னைத் தமக்கென ஒதுக்கிவைத்துத் தமது அருளால் என்னை அழைத்த கடவுள், தம் மகனைப் பற்றிய நற்செய்தியைப் பிற இனத்தவர்க்கு நான் அறிவிக்குமாறு அவரை எனக்கு வெளிப்படுத்தத் திருவுளங்கொண்டார். அப்போது நான் எந்த மனிதரிடமும் போய்க் கலந்து பேசவில்லை. எனக்கு முன் திருத்தூதர்களாய் இருந்தவர்களைக் காண எருசலேமுக்குப் போகவுமில்லை. ஆனால் உடனே அரேபியாவுக்குச் சென்றேன். அங்கிருந்து தமஸ்கு நகருக்குத் திரும்பினேன். மூன்று ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பிறகுதான் கேபாவைப் பார்த்துப் பேச எருசலேமுக்குப் போனேன். அங்கே பதினைந்து நாள் அவரோடு தங்கியிருந்தேன். ஆண்டவரின் சகோதரரான யாக்கோபைத் தவிர திருத்தூதருள் வேறு எவரையும் நான் போய்ப் பார்க்கவில்லை. நான் உங்களுக்கு எழுதுவதில் பொய் ஒன்றுமில்லை; இதற்குக் கடவுளே சாட்சி!

பிறகு நான் சிரியா, சிலிசியப் பகுதிகளுக்குச் சென்றேன். ஆயினும் யூதேய நாட்டிலிருந்த கிறிஸ்தவச் சபைகளுக்கு அதுவரை அறிமுகம் ஆகாமலேயே இருந்தேன். “ஒரு காலத்தில் தங்களைத் துன்புறுத்தியவன், தான் முன்பு ஒழிக்க முயன்ற விசுவாசத்தை இப்பொழுது நற்செய்தியாக அறிவிக்கிறான்” என்று மட்டும் அவர்கள் கேள்விப்பட்டிருந்தார்கள். அதற்காக என் பொருட்டுக் கடவுளைப் போற்றிப் புகழ்ந்தார்கள்.

The angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the House of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. He went in and said to her, ‘Rejoice, so highly favoured! The Lord is with you.’ She was deeply disturbed by these words and asked herself what this greeting could mean, but the angel said to her, ‘Mary, do not be afraid; you have won God’s favour. Listen! You are to conceive and bear a son, and you must name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David; he will rule over the House of Jacob for ever and his reign will have no end.’ Mary said to the angel, ‘But how can this come about, since I am a virgin?’ ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you’ the angel answered ‘and the power of the Most High will cover you with its shadow. A reading from the Acts of Apostles 1: 12-14 

After Jesus was taken up into heaven the apostles went back from the Mount of Olives, as it is called, to Jerusalem, a short distance away, no more than a sabbath walk; and when they reached the city they went to the upper room where they were staying; there were Peter and John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Jude son of James. All these joined in continuous prayer, together with several women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

ஆறாம் மாதத்தில் கபிரியேல் என்னும் வானதூதரைக் கடவுள் கலிலேயாவிலுள்ள நாசரேத்து என்னும் ஊரிலிருந்த ஒரு கன்னியிடம் அனுப்பினார். அவர் தாவீது குடும்பத்தினராகிய யோசேப்பு என்னும் பெயருடைய ஒருவருக்கு மண ஒப்பந்தமானவர். அவர் பெயர் மரியா.

வானதூதர் மரியாவுக்குத் தோன்றி, “அருள்மிகப் பெற்றவரே வாழ்க! ஆண்டவர் உம்மோடு இருக்கிறார்” என்றார்.

இவ்வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்டு அவர் கலங்கி, இந்த வாழ்த்து எத்தகையதோ என்று எண்ணிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.

வானதூதர் அவரைப் பார்த்து, “மரியா, அஞ்சவேண்டாம்; கடவுளின் அருளைக் கண்டடைந்துள்ளீர். இதோ, கருவுற்று ஒரு மகனைப் பெறுவீர்; அவருக்கு இயேசு என்னும் பெயரிடுவீர். அவர் பெரியவராயிருப்பார்; உன்னத கடவுளின் மகன் எனப்படுவார். அவருடைய தந்தை தாவீதின் அரியணையை ஆண்டவராகிய கடவுள் அவருக்கு அளிப்பார். அவர் யாக்கோபின் குடும்பத்தின் மீது என்றென்றும் ஆட்சி செலுத்துவார். அவருடைய ஆட்சிக்கு முடிவே இராது” என்றார்.

அதற்கு மரியா வானதூதரிடம், “இது எப்படி நிகழும்? நான் கன்னி ஆயிற்றே!” என்றார்.

வானதூதர் அவரிடம், “தூய ஆவி உம்மீது வரும். உன்னத கடவுளின் வல்லமை உம்மேல் நிழலிடும். ஆதலால் உம்மிடம் பிறக்கப் போகும் குழந்தை தூயது. அக்குழந்தை இறைமகன் எனப்படும். உம் உறவினராகிய எலிசபெத்தும் தம் முதிர்ந்த வயதில் ஒரு மகனைக் கருத்தரித்திருக்கிறார். கருவுற இயலாதவர் என்று சொல்லப்பட்ட அவருக்கு இது ஆறாம் மாதம். ஏனெனில், கடவுளால் இயலாதது ஒன்றுமில்லை” என்றார்.

பின்னர் மரியா, “நான் ஆண்டவரின் அடிமை; உம்சொற்படியே எனக்கு நிகழட்டும்” என்றார். அப்பொழுது வானதூதர் அவரை விட்டு அகன்றார்.

இயேசு விண்ணேற்றம் அடைந்தபின் திருத்தூதர்கள் ஒலிவ மலையிலிருந்து எருசலேமுக்குத் திரும்பினார்கள். இம்மலை எருசலேமுக்கு அருகில், ஓய்வுநாளில் செல்லக்கூடிய தொலையில் உள்ளது. பேதுரு, யோவான், யாக்கோபு, அந்திரேயா, பிலிப்பு, தோமா, பர்த்தலமேயு, மத்தேயு, அல்பேயுவின் மகன் யாக்கோபு, தீவிரவாதியான சீமோன், யாக்கோபின் மகன் யூதா ஆகியோர் திரும்பி வந்தபின் தாங்கள் தங்கியிருந்த மேல்மாடிக்குச் சென்றார்கள். அவர்கள் அனைவரும் சில பெண்களோடும், இயேசுவின் சகோதரர்களோடும், அவருடைய தாய் மரியாவோடும் இணைந்து ஒரே மனத்தோடு இறைவனிடம் வேண்டிக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.
