என் பொருட்டும் நற்செய்தியின் பொருட்டும் தம் உயிரை இழப்பவர், அதைக் காத்துக்கொள்வர்.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு மக்கள் கூட்டத்தையும் சீடரையும் தம்மிடம் வரவழைத்து, “என்னைப் பின்பற்ற விரும்பும் எவரும் தன்னலம் துறந்து, தம் சிலுவையைத் தூக்கிக்கொண்டு என்னைப் பின்பற்றட்டும். ஏனெனில் தம் உயிரைக் காத்துக்கொள்ள விரும்பும் எவரும் அதை இழந்து விடுவார்; என் பொருட்டும் நற்செய்தியின் பொருட்டும் தம் உயிரை இழக்கும் எவரும் அதைக் காத்துக்கொள்வார்.

ஒருவர் உலகம் முழுவதையும் தமதாக்கிக் கொண்டாலும் தம் வாழ்வையே இழப்பார் எனில் அவருக்குக் கிடைக்கும் பயன் என்ன? அவர் தம் வாழ்வுக்கு ஈடாக எதைக் கொடுப்பார்? பாவத்தில் உழலும் இவ்விபசாரத் தலைமுறையினருள், என்னைக் குறித்தும் என் வார்த்தைகளைக் குறித்தும் வெட்கப்படும் ஒவ்வொருவரையும் பற்றி மானிட மகனும் தம்முடைய தந்தையின் மாட்சியோடு தூய வானதூதருடன் வரும்போது வெட்கப் படுவார்” என்றார்.

மேலும் அவர் அவர்களிடம், “இங்கே இருப்பவர்களுள் சிலர் இறையாட்சி வல்லமையோடு வந்துள்ளதைக் காண்பதற்குமுன் சாகமாட்டார்கள் என உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்” என்றார்.

உயிர் இல்லாத உடல் போல, செயல் இல்லாத நம்பிக்கையும் செத்ததே.

என் சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே, தம்மிடம் நம்பிக்கை உண்டு எனச் சொல்லும் ஒருவர் அதைச் செயல்களிலே காட்டாவிட்டால், அதனால் பயன் என்ன? அந்த நம்பிக்கை அவரை மீட்க முடியுமா? ஒரு சகோதரன் அல்லது ஒரு சகோதரி போதிய உடையும் அன்றாட உணவும் இல்லாதிருக்கும்போது, அவர்கள் உடலுக்குத் தேவையானவை எவற்றையும் கொடாமல் உங்களுள் ஒருவர் அவர்களைப் பார்த்து, “நலமே சென்று வாருங்கள்; குளிர்காய்ந்து கொள்ளுங்கள்; பசியாற்றிக்கொள்ளுங்கள்” என்பாரென்றால், அதனால் பயன் என்ன? அதைப் போலவே, நம்பிக்கையும் செயல் வடிவம் பெறாவிட்டால் தன்னிலே உயிரற்றதாய் இருக்கும்.

ஆனால், “ஒருவரிடம் நம்பிக்கை இருப்பதுபோல இன்னொருவரிடம் செயல்கள் இருக்கின்றன” என யாராவது சொல்லலாம். அதற்கு என் பதில்: செயல்கள் இன்றி எவ்வாறு நம்பிக்கை கொண்டிருக்க முடியும் எனக் காட்டுங்கள். நானோ என் செயல்களின் அடிப்படையில் நான் கொண்டுள்ள நம்பிக்கையை உங்களுக்குக் காட்டுகிறேன். கடவுள் ஒருவரே என்பதை நீங்கள் நம்புகிறீர்கள்; நல்லதுதான். பேய்களுங்கூட அவ்வாறு நம்பி அச்சத்தால் நடுங்குகின்றன. அறிவிலிகளே, செயலற்ற நம்பிக்கை பயனற்றது என நான் எடுத்துக்காட்ட வேண்டுமா? நம் மூதாதையாகிய ஆபிரகாமைப் பாருங்கள். தம் மகன் ஈசாக்கைப் பீடத்தின்மேல் பலிகொடுத்தபோது அவர் செய்த செயல்களினால் அல்லவோ கடவுளுக்கு ஏற்புடையவரானார்? அவரது நம்பிக்கையும் செயல்களும் இணைந்து செயல்பட்டன என்றும், செயல்கள் நம்பிக்கையை நிறைவுபெறச் செய்தன என்றும் இதிலிருந்து புலப்படுகிறது அல்லவா? “ஆபிரகாம் ஆண்டவர்மீது நம்பிக்கை கொண்டார். அதை ஆண்டவர் அவருக்கு நீதியாகக் கருதினார்” என்னும் மறைநூல் வாக்கு இவ்வாறு நிறைவேறியது. மேலும் அவர் கடவுளின் நண்பர் என்றும் பெயர் பெற்றார்.

எனவே மனிதர் நம்பிக்கையினால் மட்டுமல்ல, செயல்களினாலும் கடவுளுக்கு ஏற்புடையவராகின்றனர் எனத் தெரிகிறது. உயிர் இல்லாத உடல் போல, செயல்கள் இல்லாத நம்பிக்கையும் செத்ததே.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 8: 34-9:1 

Jesus called the people and his disciples to him and said:

  ‘If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me. For anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. What gain, then, is it for a man to win the whole world and ruin his life? And indeed what can a man offer in exchange for his life? For if anyone in this adulterous and sinful generation is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.’ And he said to them, ‘I tell you solemnly, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power.’

A body dies without spirit; faith without good works is not alive

James 2: 14-24, 26 

Take the case, my brothers, of someone who has never done a single good act but claims that he has faith. Will that faith save him? If one of the brothers or one of the sisters is in need of clothes and has not enough food to live on, and one of you says to them, ‘I wish you well; keep yourself warm and eat plenty’, without giving them these bare necessities of life, then what good is that? Faith is like that: if good works do not go with it, it is quite dead.

  This is the way to talk to people of that kind: ‘You say you have faith and I have good deeds; I will prove to you that I have faith by showing you my good deeds – now you prove to me that you have faith without any good deeds to show. You believe in the one God – that is creditable enough, but the demons have the same belief, and they tremble with fear. Do realise, you senseless man, that faith without good deeds is useless. You surely know that Abraham our father was justified by his deed, because he offered his son Isaac on the altar? There you see it: faith and deeds were working together; his faith became perfect by what he did. This is what scripture really means when it says: Abraham put his faith in God, and this was counted as making him justified; and that is why he was called ‘the friend of God.’

  You see now that it is by doing something good, and not only by believing, that a man is justified. A body dies when it is separated from the spirit, and in the same way faith is dead if it is separated from good deeds.
