அக்காலத்தில்

மக்கள் கூட்டத்தோடு இயேசு பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்தபோது அவருடைய தாயும் சகோதரர்களும் வந்து அவருடன் பேச வேண்டும் என்று வெளியே நின்றுகொண்டிருந்தார்கள். ஒருவர் இயேசுவை நோக்கி, “அதோ, உம் தாயும் சகோதரர்களும் உம்மோடு பேச வேண்டும் என்று வெளியே நின்றுகொண்டிருக்கின்றார்கள்” என்றார்.

அவர், இதைத் தம்மிடம் கூறியவரைப் பார்த்து, “என் தாய் யார்? என் சகோதரர்கள் யார்?” என்று கேட்டார். பின் தம் சீடர் பக்கம் கையை நீட்டி, “என் தாயும் சகோதரர்களும் இவர்களே. விண்ணகத்திலுள்ள என் தந்தையின் திருவுளத்தை நிறைவேற்றுபவரே என் சகோதரரும் சகோதரியும் தாயும் ஆவார்” என்றார்.

ஏனெனில் அவர் தம் அடிமையின் தாழ்நிலையைக் கண்ணோக்கினார். இதுமுதல் எல்லாத் தலைமுறையினரும் என்னைப் பேறுபெற்றவர் என்பர்.

இப்போது என் உயிரை ஆண்மையுடன் கையளிப்பதன் மூலம் என் முதுமைக்கு நான் தகுதியுடையவன் என மெய்ப்பிப்பேன்.

அந்நாள்களில்

தலைசிறந்த மறைநூல் அறிஞர்களுள் ஒருவரும் வயதில் முதிர்ந்தவரும் மாண்புறு தோற்றம் உடையவருமான எலயாசர் பன்றி இறைச்சி உண்ணத் தம் வாயைத் திறக்குமாறு கட்டாயப்படுத்தப்பட்டார். ஆனால் அவர் மாசுபடிந்தவராய் வாழ்வதை விட மதிப்புடையவராய் இறப்பதைத் தேர்ந்து கொண்டு இறைச்சியை வெளியே துப்பிவிட்டுத் தாமாகவே சித்திரவதைக் கருவியை நோக்கிச் சென்றார். உயிர்மேல் ஆசை இருப்பினும், திருச்சட்டம் விலக்கியிருந்த பண்டங்களைச் சுவைத்தும் பாராமல் தள்ளிவிடத் துணியும் எல்லாரும் இவ்வாறே செய்யவேண்டும்.

சட்டத்திற்கு எதிரான அந்தப் பலி விருந்துக்குப் பொறுப்பாய் இருந்தவர்கள் அவரோடு கொண்டிருந்த நீண்டகாலப் பழக்கம் காரணமாக அவரை ஒதுக்கமாக அழைத்துச் சென்று, அவர் உண்ணக்கூடிய இறைச்சியை அவரே தயாரித்துக் கொண்டுவருமாறும், மன்னன் கட்டளையிட்டபடி பலியிடப்பட்ட இறைச்சியை உண்பது போல நடிக்குமாறும் அவரைத் தனிமையில் வேண்டிக் கொண்டார்கள். இவ்வாறு செய்வதால் அவர் சாவினின்று காப்பாற்றப்படுவார் என்றும், அவரோடு அவர்கள் கொண்டிருந்த பழைய நட்பின் காரணமாக மனிதநேயத்தோடு நடத்தப்படுவார் என்றும் அவர்கள் எண்ணினார்கள். ஆனால் எலயாசர் தமது வயதுக்குரிய தகுதிக்கும் முதுமைக்குரிய மேன்மைக்கும் நரைமுடிக்குரிய மாண்புக்கும் சிறு வயதுமுதல் தாம் நடத்தியிருந்த மாசற்ற வாழ்க்கைக்கும் கடவுள் கொடுத்திருந்த திருச்சட்டத்திற்கும் ஏற்றபடி மேலான முறையில் உறுதிபூண்டவராய், உடனே தமது முடிவைத் தெரிவித்து, தம்மைக் கொன்றுவிடுமாறு கூறினார்.

அவர் தொடர்ந்து, “இவ்வாறு நடிப்பது எனது வயதுக்கு ஏற்றதல்ல; ஏனெனில், தொண்ணூறு வயதான எலயாசர் அன்னியருடைய மறையை ஏற்றுக் கொண்டுவிட்டார் என இளைஞருள் பலர் எண்ணக்கூடும். குறுகிய, நிலையில்லாத வாழ்வுக்காக நான் இவ்வாறு நடிப்பேனாகில் என் பொருட்டு அவர்கள் நெறி பிறழ நேரிடும்; அவ்வாறு நேரிட்டால் அது என் முதுமையை நானே களங்கப்படுத்துவதும் இழிவுபடுத்துவதும் ஆகும். மனிதரின் தண்டனையினின்று நான் தற்காலிகமாக விடுபட்டாலும், உயிரோடு வாழ்ந்தாலும் இறந்தாலும், நான் எல்லாம் வல்லவருடைய கைக்குத் தப்ப முடியாது. ஆகவே இப்போது என் உயிரை ஆண்மையுடன் கையளிப்பதன் மூலம் என் முதுமைக்கு நான் தகுதியுடையவன் என மெய்ப்பிப்பேன்; மதிப்புக்குரிய, தூய சட்டங்களுக்காக விருப்போடும் பெருந்தன்மையோடும் எவ்வாறு இறப்பது என்பதற்கு ஓர் உயரிய எடுத்துக்காட்டை விட்டுச் செல்வேன்” என்றார்.

இதெல்லாம் கூறி முடித்ததும் அவர் சித்திரவதைக் கருவியை நோக்கிச் சென்றார். சற்றுமுன் அவரைக் கனிவோடு நடத்தியவர்கள் இப்போது கல்நெஞ்சராய் மாறினார்கள்; ஏனெனில் அவர் கூறியது அவர்களுக்கு மடமையாகத் தோன்றியது.

அடிபட்டதால் இறக்கும் தறுவாயில் இருந்தபோது அவர் அழுது புலம்பி, “நான் சாவினின்று விடுவிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கலாம் என்றாலும், அடியினால் என் உடலில் ஏற்படும் கொடிய துன்பங்களைத் தாங்கிக் கொள்கிறேன்; ஆண்டவருக்கு நான் அஞ்சுவதால் என் உள்ளத்தில் மகிழ்ச்சியோடு இவற்றை ஏற்றுக் கொள்கிறேன்; ஆண்டவர் தம் தூய ஞானத்தால் இவற்றையெல்லாம் அறிகிறார்” என்றார். இவ்வாறு எலயாசர் உயிர் துறந்தார்.

அவருடைய இறப்பு இளைஞர்களுக்கு மட்டுமல்ல, அவருடைய நாட்டு மக்கள் அனைவருக்குமே சான்றாண்மைக்கு எடுத்துக்காட்டாகவும் நற்பண்புக்கு அடையாளமாகவும் விளங்கியது.

At that time,

    having entered the city of Jericho, Jesus was passing through it.

    Now there was a man named Zacchaeus;

he was the chief tax collector,

and he was a rich person.

    He was trying to see who Jesus was,

but he couldn't because of the crowd,

because he was small.

    So he ran ahead

and climbed a sycamore tree

to see Jesus who was going to pass by.

    When Jesus came to the place,

he looked up and said to him,

“Zacchaeus, come down quickly;

today I must go and stay in your house. »

    Quickly, he went down

and received Jesus with joy.

    Seeing this, everyone complained:

“He went to stay with a man who is a sinner. »

    Zacchaeus, standing, addressed the Lord:

“Behold, Lord:

I give half of my possessions to the poor,

and if I have wronged anyone,

I will repay him four times as much. »

    Then Jesus said about him:

“Today salvation has come to this house,

because he also is a son of Abraham.

“By choosing to die for our venerable and holy laws, I will have left the noble example of a beautiful death” (2 M 6, 18-31)

Reading the second book of the Martyrs of Israel

In those days

    Eleazar was one of the most eminent scribes.

He was a very old man,

and very good-looking.

They tried to force him to eat pork

by forcing his mouth open.

    Preferring to have a prestigious death

rather than an abject life,

he walked of his own free will towards the instrument of torture,

    after having spat out this meat,

as one must do

when one has the courage to reject

what he is. not allowed to eat,

even for love of life.

    Those who were responsible for this sacrilegious meal

had known it for a long time.

They took him aside and advised him

to bring meats whose use was permitted,

and which he would have prepared himself.

He would only have to pretend

to eat the flesh of the victim

to obey the king;

    by doing so, he would escape death

and be treated humanely

thanks to the old friendship he had for them.

    But he made a beautiful reasoning,

well worthy of his age,

of the rank that his old age gave him,

of the respect that his white hair earned him,

of his irreproachable conduct since childhood,

and above all worthy of the holy legislation established by God.

He spoke accordingly,

asking that he be sent to hell without delay:

    “Such a comedy is unworthy of my age.

Because many young people would believe that Eleazar,

at 90 years old,

adopted the way of life of foreigners.

    Because of this comedy, through my fault,

they too would let themselves be led astray;

and I, for a miserable remainder of my life,

would bring shame and dishonor upon my old age.

    Even if I avoid, for the moment,

the punishment that comes from men,

I will not escape, alive or dead,

from the hands of the Almighty.

    This is why, by leaving life today with courage,

I will show myself worthy of my old age

    and, by choosing to die with determination and nobility

for our venerable and holy laws,

I will have left young people

the noble example of 'a beautiful death. »

With these words, he went straight to the execution.

    To those who led him,

these words were madness;

this is why they suddenly went

from benevolence to hostility.

    As for him, at the moment of dying under the blows,

he said, groaning:

“The Lord, in his holy knowledge, sees it well:

while I could escape death,

I endure under the lash

pains which cause suffering my body ;

but in my soul I bear them with joy,

because I fear God. »

    Such was the death of this man.

He thus left, not only to the youth

but to all of his people,

an example of nobility and a memorial of virtue.
