Not one sparrow is forgotten in God's sight

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 12:1-7

The people had gathered in their thousands so that they were treading on one another. And Jesus began to speak, first of all to his disciples. ‘Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees – that is, their hypocrisy. Everything that is now covered will be uncovered, and everything now hidden will be made clear. For this reason, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in hidden places will be proclaimed on the housetops.

‘To you my friends I say: Do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. I will tell you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has the power to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. Can you not buy five sparrows for two pennies? And yet not one is forgotten in God’s sight. Why, every hair on your head has been counted. There is no need to be afraid: you are worth more than hundreds of sparrows.’

A Reading from the Letter of St.Paul to the Ephesians 1:11-14

It is in Christ that we were claimed as God’s own,

chosen from the beginning, under the predetermined plan of the one who guides all things as he decides by his own will; chosen to be, for his greater glory, the people who would put their hopes in Christ before he came. Now you too, in him, have heard the message of the truth and the good news of your salvation,

and have believed it; and you too have been stamped with the seal of the Holy Spirit of the Promise, the pledge of our inheritance which brings freedom for those whom God has taken for his own, to make his glory praised.

அக்காலத்தில்

ஒருவரையொருவர் மிதிக்கும் அளவுக்கு ஆயிரக்கணக்கான மக்கள் திரண்டு வந்திருந்தபோது இயேசு முதலில் தம் சீடரோடு பேசத் தொடங்கினார். அவர் அவர்களிடம் கூறியது: “பரிசேயருடைய வெளிவேடமாகிய புளிப்பு மாவைக் குறித்து நீங்கள் எச்சரிக்கையாய் இருங்கள். வெளிப்படாதவாறு மூடப்பட்டிருப்பது ஒன்றும் இல்லை; அறியப்படாதவாறு மறைந்திருப்பதும் ஒன்றும் இல்லை. ஆகவே நீங்கள் இருளில் பேசியவை ஒளியில் கேட்கும். நீங்கள் உள்ளறைகளில் காதோடு காதாய்ப் பேசியவை வீடுகளின் மேல்தளத்திலிருந்து அறிவிக்கப்படும்.

என் நண்பர்களாகிய உங்களுக்கு நான் சொல்கிறேன்: உடலைக் கொல்வதையன்றி வேறு எதுவும் செய்ய இயலாதவர்களுக்கு அஞ்ச வேண்டாம். நீங்கள் யாருக்கு அஞ்ச வேண்டுமென நான் உங்களுக்கு எடுத்துக் காட்டுகிறேன். கொன்றபின் நரகத்தில் தள்ள அதிகாரம் உள்ளவருக்கே அஞ்சுங்கள்; ஆம், அவருக்கே அஞ்சுங்கள் என நான் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்.

இரண்டு காசுக்கு ஐந்து சிட்டுக்குருவிகள் விற்பதில்லையா? எனினும் அவற்றில் ஒன்றையும் கடவுள் மறப்பதில்லையே. உங்கள் தலைமுடி எல்லாம் கூட எண்ணப்பட்டிருக்கின்றன. அஞ்சாதீர்கள்; சிட்டுக்குருவிகள் பலவற்றை விட நீங்கள் மேலானவர்கள்.”

கடவுள் தமது திருவுளத்தின் திட்டத்தின்படி அனைத்தையும் செயல்படுத்தி வருகிறார். அவரது தீர்மானத்தால் நாம் முன்குறிக்கப்பட்டு, கிறிஸ்து வழியாய் அவரது உரிமைப் பேற்றுக்கு உரியவரானோம். இவ்வாறு கிறிஸ்துவின் மேல் முதலில் நம்பிக்கை வைத்த நாங்கள் கடவுளுடைய மாட்சியைப் புகழ்ந்து பாடவேண்டுமென அவர் விரும்பினார். நீங்களும், உங்களுக்கு மீட்பளிக்கும் நற்செய்தியாகிய உண்மையின் வார்த்தையைக் கேட்டு, அவர்மீது நம்பிக்கை கொண்டு, வாக்களிக்கப்பட்ட தூய ஆவியால் அவருக்குள் முத்திரையிடப்பட்டீர்கள். அந்தத் தூய ஆவியே நாம் மீட்படைந்து உரிமைப்பேறு பெறுவோம் என்பதை உறுதிப்படுத்தும் அடையாளமாக இருக்கிறது. இவ்வாறு கடவுளது மாட்சியின் புகழ் விளங்கும்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 11:47-54

Jesus said: ‘Alas for you who build the tombs of the prophets, the men your ancestors killed! In this way you both witness what your ancestors did and approve it; they did the killing, you do the building.

‘And that is why the Wisdom of God said, “I will send them prophets and apostles; some they will slaughter and persecute, so that this generation will have to answer for every prophet’s blood that has been shed since the foundation of the world, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was murdered between the altar and the sanctuary.” Yes, I tell you, this generation will have to answer for it all.

‘Alas for you lawyers who have taken away the key of knowledge! You have not gone in yourselves, and have prevented others going in who wanted to.’

When he left the house, the scribes and the Pharisees began a furious attack on him and tried to force answers from him on innumerable questions, setting traps to catch him out in something he might say.
