அக்காலத்தில்

மக்கள் வந்து கூடக்கூட இயேசு கூறியது: “இந்தத் தீய தலைமுறையினர் அடையாளம் கேட்கின்றனர். இவர்களுக்கு யோனாவின் அடையாளத்தைத் தவிர வேறு அடையாளம் எதுவும் கொடுக்கப்பட மாட்டாது. யோனா நினிவே மக்களுக்கு அடையாளமாய் இருந்ததைப் போன்று மானிட மகனும் இந்தத் தலைமுறையினருக்கு அடையாளமாய் இருப்பார். தீர்ப்புநாளில் தென்னாட்டு அரசி இத்தலைமுறையினரோடு எழுந்து இவர்களைக் கண்டனம் செய்வார். ஏனெனில் அவர் சாலமோனின் ஞானத்தைக் கேட்க உலகின் கடைக்கோடியிலிருந்து வந்தவர். ஆனால் இங்கிருப்பவர் சாலமோனிலும் பெரியவர் அல்லவா! தீர்ப்பு நாளில் நினிவே மக்கள் இத்தலைமுறையினரோடு எழுந்து இவர்களைக் கண்டனம் செய்வார்கள். ஏனெனில் யோனா அறிவித்த செய்தியைக் கேட்டு அவர்கள் மனம் மாறியவர்கள். ஆனால் இங்கிருப்பவர் யோனாவை விடப் பெரியவர் அல்லவா!”

பிற இனத்தவராகிய நீங்களும் இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவுக்கு உரியவர்களாய் இருக்க அழைப்புப் பெற்றிருக்கிறீர்கள்.

கடவுளின் அன்பைப் பெற்று இறைமக்களாக அழைக்கப்பட்டுள்ள உரோமை நகர மக்கள் அனைவருக்கும் இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் பணியாளனும் திருத்தூதனாக அழைப்புப் பெற்றவனும் கடவுளின் நற்செய்திப் பணிக்கென ஒதுக்கிவைக்கப்பட்டவனுமாகிய பவுல் எழுதுவது: நம் தந்தையாம் கடவுளிடமிருந்தும் ஆண்டவராம் இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவிடமிருந்தும் உங்களுக்கு அருளும் அமைதியும் உரித்தாகுக! நற்செய்தியைத் தருவதாகக் கடவுள் தம் இறைவாக்கினர் வழியாக ஏற்கெனவே திருமறை நூலில் வாக்களித்திருந்தார்.

இந்த நற்செய்தி அவருடைய மகனைப் பற்றியதாகும். இவர் மனிதர் என்னும் முறையில் தாவீதின் வழிமரபினர்; தூய ஆவியால் ஆட்கொள்ளப் பட்ட நிலையில் வல்லமையுள்ள இறைமகன். இவர் இறந்து உயிர்த்தெழுந்ததால் இந்த உண்மை நிலைநாட்டப்பட்டது. இவரே நம் ஆண்டவர் இயேசு கிறிஸ்து. பிற இனத்தார் அனைவரும் இவர்மீது நம்பிக்கை கொண்டு இவருக்குக் கீழ்ப்படியுமாறு இவர் பெயர் விளங்க இவர் வழியாகவே நாங்கள் திருத்தூதுப் பணி செய்வதற்குரிய அருளைப் பெற்றுக்கொண்டோம். பிற இனத்தவராகிய நீங்களும் இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவுக்கு உரியவர்களாய் இருக்க அழைப்புப் பெற்றிருக்கிறீர்கள்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke 11: 29-32 

The crowds got even bigger, and Jesus addressed them:

  ‘This is a wicked generation; it is asking for a sign. The only sign it will be given is the sign of Jonah. For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. On Judgement day the Queen of the South will rise up with the men of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and there is something greater than Solomon here. On Judgement day the men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation and condemn it, because when Jonah preached they repented; and there is something greater than Jonah here.’

Our apostolic mission is to preach the obedience of faith to all pagan nations.

A Reading from the Letter of St.Paul to Romans 1: 1-7. 

From Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus who has been called to be an apostle, and specially chosen to preach the Good News that God promised long ago through his prophets in the scriptures.

  This news is about the Son of God who, according to the human nature he took was a descendant of David: it is about Jesus Christ our Lord who, in the order of the spirit, the spirit of holiness that was in him, was proclaimed Son of God in all his power through his resurrection from the dead. Through him we received grace and our apostolic mission to preach the obedience of faith to all pagan nations in honour of his name. You are one of these nations, and by his call belong to Jesus Christ. To you all, then, who are God’s beloved in Rome, called to be saints, may God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ send grace and peace.
