அக்காலத்தில்

பரிசேயர் வந்து இயேசுவோடு வாதாடத் தொடங்கினர்; வானத்திலிருந்து அடையாளம் ஒன்றைக் காட்டும்படி அவரைச் சோதித்தனர். அவர் பெருமூச்சுவிட்டு, “இந்தத் தலைமுறையினர் அடையாளம் கேட்பதேன்? இத்தலைமுறையினருக்கு அடையாளம் எதுவும் கொடுக்கப்படமாட்டாது என உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்” என்றார். அவர்களை விட்டு அகன்று மீண்டும் படகேறி அவர் மறு கரைக்குச் சென்றார்.

அந்நாள்களில்

ஆதாம் தன் மனைவி ஏவாளுடன் கூடி வாழ்ந்தான். அவள் கருவுற்றுக் காயினைப் பெற்றெடுத்தாள். அவள் “ஆண்டவர் அருளால் ஆண் மகன் ஒருவனை நான் பெற்றுள்ளேன்” என்றாள். பின்பு அவள் அவன் சகோதரன் ஆபேலைப் பெற்றெடுத்தாள். ஆபேல் ஆடு மேய்ப்பவன் ஆனான். காயின் நிலத்தைப் பண்படுத்துபவன் ஆனான்.

சில நாள்கள் சென்றன. காயின் நிலத்தின் பலனிலிருந்து ஆண்டவருக்குக் காணிக்கை கொண்டு வந்தான். ஆபேலும் தன் மந்தையிலிருந்து கொழுத்த தலையீறுகளைக் கொண்டு வந்தான்.

ஆண்டவர் ஆபேலையும் அவன் காணிக்கையையும் கனிவுடன் கண்ணோக்கினார். ஆனால் காயினையும் அவன் காணிக்கையையும் அவர் கனிவுடன் கண்ணோக்கவில்லை. ஆகவே, காயின் கடுஞ் சினமுற்றான். அவன் முகம் வாடியது. ஆகவே, ஆண்டவர் காயினிடம், “நீ ஏன் சினமுற்றிருக்கிறாய்? உன் முகம் வாடி இருப்பது ஏன்? நீ நல்லது செய்தால் உயர்வடைவாய் அல்லவா? நீ நல்லது செய்யாவிட்டால், பாவம் உன்மேல் வேட்கை கொண்டு உன் வாயிலில் படுத்திருக்கும். நீ அதை அடக்கி ஆளவேண்டும்” என்றார்.

காயின் தன் சகோதரன் ஆபேலிடம், “நாம் வயல்வெளிக்குப் போவோம்” என்றான். அவர்கள் வெளியில் இருந்தபொழுது, காயின் தன் சகோதரன் ஆபேலின்மேல் பாய்ந்து அவனைக் கொன்றான். ஆண்டவர் காயினிடம், “உன் சகோதரன் ஆபேல் எங்கே?” என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு அவன், “எனக்குத் தெரியாது, நான் என்ன, என் சகோதரனுக்குக் காவலாளியோ?” என்றான். அதற்கு ஆண்டவர், “நீ என்ன செய்துவிட்டாய்! உன் சகோதரனின் இரத்தத்தின் குரல் மண்ணிலிருந்து என்னை நோக்கிக் கதறிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது. இப்பொழுது, உன் கைகள் சிந்திய உன் சகோதரனின் இரத்தத்தைத் தன் வாய்திறந்து குடித்த மண்ணை முன்னிட்டு, நீ சபிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கின்றாய். நீ மண்ணில் பயிரிடும்பொழுது அது இனிமேல் உனக்குப் பலன் தராது. மண்ணுலகில் நீ நாடோடியாக அலைந்து திரிவாய்” என்றார்.

காயின் ஆண்டவரிடம், “எனக்குக் கொடுக்கப்பட்ட தண்டனை என்னால் தாங்க முடியாததாக இருக்கின்றது. இன்று நீர் என்னை இம்மண்ணிலிருந்து துரத்தியிருக்கின்றீர்; உமது முன்னிலையினின்று நான் மறைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளேன். மண்ணுலகில் நான் நாடோடியாக அலைந்து திரிய வேண்டியுள்ளது. என்னைக் காண்கின்ற எவனும் என்னைக் கொல்வானே!” என்றான். ஆண்டவர் அவனிடம் “அப்படியன்று; காயினைக் கொல்கின்ற எவனும் ஏழு முறை பழி வாங்கப்படுவான்” என்று சொல்லி, காயினைக் கண்டுபிடிக்கும் எவனும் அவனைக் கொல்லாமல் இருக்க ஆண்டவர் அவன்மேல் ஓர் அடையாளம் இட்டார்.

ஆதாம் மீண்டும் தன் மனைவியுடன் கூடி வாழ, அவளும் மகன் ஒருவனைப் பெற்று அவனுக்குச் சேத்து என்று பெயரிட்டாள். “காயின் ஆபேலைக் கொன்றதால் அவனுடைய இடத்தில் இன்னொருவனைக் கடவுள் வைத்தருளினார்” என்றாள்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 8: 11-13

The Pharisees came up and started a discussion with Jesus; they demanded of him a sign from heaven, to test him. And with a sigh that came straight from the heart he said, ‘Why does this generation demand a sign? I tell you solemnly, no sign shall be given to this generation.’ And leaving them again and re-embarking, he went away to the opposite shore.

The mark of Cain

A Reading from the Book of Genesis 4:1-15,25 

The man had intercourse with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. ‘I have acquired a man with the help of the Lord’ she said. She gave birth to a second child, Abel, the brother of Cain. Now Abel became a shepherd and kept flocks, while Cain tilled the soil. Time passed and Cain brought some of the produce of the soil as an offering for the Lord, while Abel for his part brought the first-born of his flock and some of their fat as well. The Lord looked with favour on Abel and his offering. But he did not look with favour on Cain and his offering, and Cain was very angry and downcast. The Lord asked Cain, ‘Why are you angry and downcast? If you are well disposed, ought you not to lift up your head? But if you are ill disposed, is not sin at the door like a crouching beast hungering for you, which you must master?’ Cain said to his brother Abel, ‘Let us go out’; and while they were in the open country, Cain set on his brother Abel and killed him.

  The Lord asked Cain, ‘Where is your brother Abel?’ ‘I do not know’ he replied. ‘Am I my brother’s guardian?’ ‘What have you done?’ the Lord asked. ‘Listen to the sound of your brother’s blood, crying out to me from the ground. Now be accursed and driven from the ground that has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood at your hands. When you till the ground it shall no longer yield you any of its produce. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer over the earth.’ Then Cain said to the Lord, ‘My punishment is greater than I can bear. See! Today you drive me from this ground. I must hide from you, and be a fugitive and a wanderer over the earth. Why, whoever comes across me will kill me!’ ‘Very well, then,’ the Lord replied ‘if anyone kills Cain, sevenfold vengeance shall be taken for him.’ So the Lord put a mark on Cain, to prevent whoever might come across him from striking him down.

  Adam had intercourse with his wife, and she gave birth to a son whom she named Seth, ‘because God has granted me other offspring’ she said ‘in place of Abel, since Cain has killed him.’
