Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You have learnt how it was said: You must love your neighbour and hate your enemy. But I say this to you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you; in this way you will be sons of your Father in heaven, for he causes his sun to rise on bad men as well as good, and his rain to fall on honest and dishonest men alike. For if you love those who love you, what right have you to claim any credit? Even the tax collectors do as much, do they not? And if you save your greetings for your brothers, are you doing anything exceptional? Even the pagans do as much, do they not? You must therefore be perfect just as your heavenly Father is perfect.’

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘If your virtue goes no deeper than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.

  ‘You have learnt how it was said to our ancestors: You must not kill; and if anyone does kill he must answer for it before the court. But I say this to you: anyone who is angry with his brother will answer for it before the court; if a man calls his brother “Fool” he will answer for it before the Sanhedrin; and if a man calls him “Renegade” he will answer for it in hell fire. So then, if you are bringing your offering to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar, go and be reconciled with your brother first, and then come back and present your offering. Come to terms with your opponent in good time while you are still on the way to the court with him, or he may hand you over to the judge and the judge to the officer, and you will be thrown into prison. A reading from the Book of the prophet Ezekiel 18: 21-28 

Thus says the Lord:

  ‘If the wicked man renounces all the sins he has committed, respects my laws and is law-abiding and honest, he will certainly live; he will not die. All the sins he committed will be forgotten from then on; he shall live because of the integrity he has practised. What! Am I likely to take pleasure in the death of a wicked man – it is the Lord who speaks – and not prefer to see him renounce his wickedness and live?

  ‘But if the upright man renounces his integrity, commits sin, copies the wicked man and practises every kind of filth, is he to live? All the integrity he has practised shall be forgotten from then on; but this is because he himself has broken faith and committed sin, and for this he shall die. But you object, “What the Lord does is unjust.” Listen, you House of Israel: is what I do unjust? Is it not what you do that is unjust? When the upright man renounces his integrity to commit sin and dies because of this, he dies because of the evil that he himself has committed. When the sinner renounces sin to become law-abiding and honest, he deserves to live. He has chosen to renounce all his previous sins; he shall certainly live; he shall not die.’

Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. For the one who asks always receives; the one who searches always finds; the one who knocks will always have the door opened to him. Is there a man among you who would hand his son a stone when he asked for bread? Or would hand him a snake when he asked for a fish? If you, then, who are evil, know how to give your children what is good, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

  ‘So always treat others as you would like them to treat you; that is the meaning of the Law and the Prophets.’

Queen Esther took refuge with the Lord in the mortal peril which had overtaken her. She besought the Lord God of Israel in these words:

‘My Lord, our King, the only one,

come to my help, for I am alone

and have no helper but you

and am about to take my life in my hands.

‘I have been taught from my earliest years, in the bosom of my family,

that you, Lord, chose

Israel out of all the nations

and our ancestors out of all the people of old times

to be your heritage for ever;

and that you have treated them as you promised.

இயேசு தம் சீடரை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: கேளுங்கள், உங்களுக்குக் கொடுக்கப்படும்; தேடுங்கள், நீங்கள் கண்டடைவீர்கள்; தட்டுங்கள், உங்களுக்குத் திறக்கப்படும். ஏனெனில், கேட்போர் எல்லாரும் பெற்றுக் கொள்கின்றனர்; தேடுவோர் கண்டடைகின்றனர்; தட்டுவோருக்குத் திறக்கப்படும்.

உங்களுள் எவராவது ஒருவர் அப்பத்தைக் கேட்கும் தம் பிள்ளைக்குக் கல்லைக் கொடுப்பாரா? அல்லது, பிள்ளை மீன் கேட்டால் பாம்பைக் கொடுப்பாரா? தீயோர்களாகிய நீங்களே உங்கள் பிள்ளைகளுக்கு நற்கொடைகள் அளிக்க அறிந்திருக்கிறீர்கள். அப்படியானால் விண்ணுலகில் உள்ள உங்கள் தந்தை தம்மிடம் கேட்போருக்கு இன்னும் மிகுதியாக நன்மைகள் அளிப்பார் அல்லவா!

ஆகையால் பிறர் உங்களுக்குச் செய்யவேண்டும் என விரும்புகிறவற்றை எல்லாம் நீங்களும் அவர்களுக்குச் செய்யுங்கள். இறைவாக்குகளும் திருச்சட்டமும் கூறுவது இதுவே.

The crowds got even bigger, and Jesus addressed them:

  ‘This is a wicked generation; it is asking for a sign. The only sign it will be given is the sign of Jonah. For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. On Judgement day the Queen of the South will rise up with the men of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and there is something greater than Solomon here. On Judgement day the men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation and condemn it, because when Jonah preached they repented; and there is something greater than Jonah here.’

A reading from the book of Jonah 3: 1-10

The word of the Lord was addressed to Jonah: ‘Up!’ he said ‘Go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach to them as I told you to.’ Jonah set out and went to Nineveh in obedience to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was a city great beyond compare: it took three days to cross it. Jonah went on into the city, making a day’s journey. He preached in these words, ‘Only forty days more and Nineveh is going to be destroyed.’ And the people of Nineveh believed in God; they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least. The news reached the king of Nineveh, who rose from his throne, took off his robe, put on sackcloth and sat down in ashes. A proclamation was then promulgated throughout Nineveh, by decree of the king and his ministers, as follows: ‘Men and beasts, herds and flocks, are to taste nothing; they must not eat, they must not drink water. All are to put on sackcloth and call on God with all their might; and let everyone renounce his evil behaviour and the wicked things he has done. Who knows if God will not change his mind and relent, if he will not renounce his burning wrath, so that we do not perish?’ God saw their efforts to renounce their evil behaviour, and God relented: he did not inflict on them the disaster which he had threatened.

தீர்ப்பு நாளில் தென்னாட்டு அரசி இத்தலைமுறையினரோடு எழுந்து இவர்களைக் கண்டனம் செய்வார். ஏனெனில் அவர் சாலமோனின் ஞானத்தைக் கேட்க உலகின் கடைக்கோடியிலிருந்து வந்தவர். ஆனால் இங்கிருப்பவர் சாலமோனிலும் பெரியவர் அல்லவா!

தீர்ப்பு நாளில் நினிவே மக்கள் இத்தலைமுறையினரோடு எழுந்து இவர்களைக் கண்டனம் செய்வார்கள். ஏனெனில் யோனா அறிவித்த செய்தியைக் கேட்டு அவர்கள் மனம் மாறியவர்கள். ஆனால் இங்கிருப்பவர் யோனாவைவிடப் பெரியவர் அல்லவா!

இரண்டாம் முறையாக யோனாவுக்கு ஆண்டவரின் வாக்கு அருளப்பட்டது. அவர், “நீ புறப்பட்டு நினிவே மாநகருக்குப் போய், நான் உன்னிடம் சொல்லும் செய்தியை அங்குள்ளோருக்கு அறிவி” என்றார். அவ்வாறே யோனா புறப்பட்டு ஆண்டவரது கட்டளைப்படி நினிவேக்குச் சென்றார். நினிவே ஒரு மாபெரும் நகர். அதைக் கடக்க மூன்று நாள் ஆகும். யோனா நகருக்குள் சென்று, ஒரு நாள் முழுதும் நடந்த பின், உரத்தகுரலில், “இன்னும் நாற்பது நாளில் நினிவே அழிக்கப்படும்” என்று அறிவித்தார்.

நினிவே நகர மக்கள் கடவுளின் செய்தியை நம்பி, எல்லாரும் நோன்பிருக்க முடிவு செய்தார்கள். பெரியோர் சிறியோர் அனைவரும் சாக்கு உடை உடுத்திக்கொண்டனர். இந்தச் செய்தி நினிவே அரசனுக்கு எட்டியது. அவன் தன் அரியணையை விட்டிறங்கி, அரச உடையைக் களைந்துவிட்டு, சாக்கு உடை உடுத்திக்கொண்டு, சாம்பல் மீது உட்கார்ந்தான். மேலும் அவன் ஓர் ஆணை பிறப்பித்து, அதை நினிவே முழுதும் பறைசாற்றச் செய்தான். “இதனால் அரசரும் அரச அவையினரும் மக்கள் அனைவருக்கும் அறிவிப்பதாவது: எந்த மனிதரும் உணவைச் சுவைத்துக்கூடப் பார்க்கக்கூடாது. ஆடு, மாடு முதலிய விலங்குகளும் தீனி தின்னவோ தண்ணீர் குடிக்கவோ கூடாது. மனிதரும் விலங்குகளும் சாக்கு உடை உடுத்திக்கொண்டிருக்க வேண்டும். ஒவ்வொருவரும் கடவுளை நோக்கி மன்றாட வேண்டும்; தம் தீய வழிகளையும், தாம் செய்துவரும் கொடுஞ்செயல்களையும் விட்டொழிக்க வேண்டும். இவ்வாறு செய்தால், கடவுள் ஒருவேளை தம் மனத்தை மாற்றிக்கொள்வார்; அவரது கடுஞ்சினமும் தணியும்; நமக்கு அழிவு வராது.”

கடவுள் அவர்கள் செய்தது அனைத்தையும் பார்த்தார். அவர்கள் தீய வழிகளினின்று விலகியதை அவர் கண்டு, தம் மனத்தை மாற்றிக் கொண்டார்; தாம் அவர்கள்மீது அனுப்புவதாகச் சொல்லியிருந்த தண்டனையை அனுப்பவில்லை.

இயேசு தம் சீடரை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: நீங்கள் இறைவனிடம் வேண்டும்பொழுது பிற இனத்தவரைப்போலப் பிதற்ற வேண்டாம்; மிகுதியான சொற்களை அடுக்கிக்கொண்டே போவதால் தங்கள் வேண்டுதல் கேட்கப்படும் என அவர்கள் நினைக்கிறார்கள். நீங்கள் அவர்களைப்போல் இருக்க வேண்டாம். ஏனெனில் நீங்கள் கேட்கும் முன்னரே உங்கள் தேவையை உங்கள் தந்தை அறிந்திருக்கிறார்.

மற்ற மனிதர் செய்யும் குற்றங்களை நீங்கள் மன்னிப்பீர்களானால் உங்கள் விண்ணகத் தந்தையும் உங்களை மன்னிப்பார். மற்ற மனிதரை நீங்கள் மன்னிக்காவிடில் உங்கள் தந்தையும் உங்கள் குற்றங்களை மன்னிக்க மாட்டார்.

All the nations will be assembled before him and he will separate men one from another as the shepherd separates sheep from goats. He will place the sheep on his right hand and the goats on his left.

  ‘“Be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy.

  ‘“You must not steal nor deal deceitfully or fraudulently with your neighbour. You must not swear falsely by my name, profaning the name of your God. I am the Lord. You must not exploit or rob your neighbour. You must not keep back the labourer’s wage until next morning. You must not curse the dumb, nor put an obstacle in the blind man’s way, but you must fear your God. I am the Lord.

The temptation in the wilderness

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 4: 1-13 

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit through the wilderness, being tempted there by the devil for forty days. During that time he ate nothing and at the end he was hungry. Then the devil said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to turn into a loaf.’ But Jesus replied, ‘Scripture says: Man does not live on bread alone.’

  Then leading him to a height, the devil showed him in a moment of time all the kingdoms of the world and said to him, ‘I will give you all this power and the glory of these kingdoms, for it has been committed to me and I give it to anyone I choose. Worship me, then, and it shall all be yours.’ But Jesus answered him, ‘Scripture says:

You must worship the Lord your God,

and serve him alone.’

Then he led him to Jerusalem and made him stand on the parapet of the Temple. ‘If you are the Son of God,’ he said to him ‘throw yourself down from here, for scripture says:

He will put his angels in charge of you

to guard you,

and again:

They will hold you up on their hands

in case you hurt your foot against a stone.’

But Jesus answered him, ‘It has been said:

You must not put the Lord your God to the test.’

Having exhausted all these ways of tempting him, the devil left him, to return at the appointed time.

A Reading from the Letter of St.Paul to the Romans 10: 8-13 

Scripture says: The word (that is the faith we proclaim) is very near to you, it is on your lips and in your heart. If your lips confess that Jesus is Lord and if you believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, then you will be saved. By believing from the heart you are made righteous; by confessing with your lips you are saved. When scripture says: those who believe in him will have no cause for shame, it makes no distinction between Jew and Greek: all belong to the same Lord who is rich enough, however many ask his help, for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

  ‘“My father was a wandering Aramaean. He went down into Egypt to find refuge there, few in numbers; but there he became a nation, great, mighty, and strong. The Egyptians ill-treated us, they gave us no peace and inflicted harsh slavery on us. But we called on the Lord, the God of our fathers. இயேசு தூய ஆவியால் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டு யோர்தான் ஆற்றைவிட்டுத் திரும்பினார். பின்னர் அவர் அதே ஆவியால் பாலைநிலத்திற்கு அழைத்துச் செல்லப்பட்டார். அவர் நாற்பது நாள் அலகையினால் சோதிக்கப்பட்டார். அந்நாள்களில் அவர் ஒன்றும் சாப்பிடவில்லை. அதன்பின் அவர் பசியுற்றார். அப்பொழுது அலகை அவரிடம், “நீர் இறைமகன் என்றால் இந்தக் கல் அப்பமாகும்படி கட்டளையிடும்” என்றது. அதனிடம் இயேசு மறுமொழியாக, “ ‘மனிதர் அப்பத்தினால் மட்டும் வாழ்வதில்லை’ என மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ளதே” என்றார்.

பின்பு அலகை அவரை அழைத்துச் சென்று உலகத்தின் அரசுகள் அனைத்தையும் ஒரு நொடிப் பொழுதில் அவருக்குக் காட்டி, அவரிடம், “இவற்றின்மேல் முழு அதிகாரத்தையும் இவற்றின் மேன்மையையும் உமக்குக் கொடுப்பேன். இவை யாவும் என்னிடம் ஒப்படைக்கப் பட்டிருக்கின்றன; நான் விரும்பியவருக்கு இவற்றைக் கொடுப்பேன். நீர் என்னை வணங்கினால் அனைத்தும் உம்முடையவையாகும்” என்றது. இயேசு அதனிடம் மறுமொழியாக, “ ‘உன் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரை வணங்கி அவர் ஒருவருக்கே பணி செய்வாயாக’ என்று மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ளது” என்றார்.

பின்னர் அது அவரை எருசலேமுக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்று கோவிலின் உயர்ந்த பகுதியில் அவரை நிறுத்தி, “நீர் இறைமகன் என்றால் இங்கிருந்து கீழே குதியும்; ‘உம்மைப் பாதுகாக்கும்படி கடவுள் தம் தூதருக்கு உம்மைக் குறித்துக் கட்டளையிடுவார்’ என்றும் ‘உமது கால் கல்லில் மோதாதபடி அவர்கள் தங்கள் கைகளால் உம்மைத் தாங்கிக்கொள்வார்கள்’ என்றும் மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ளது” என்றது. இயேசு அதனிடம் மறுமொழியாக, “ ‘உன் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரைச் சோதிக்க வேண்டாம்’ என்றும் சொல்லியுள்ளதே” என்றார்.

அலகை சோதனைகள் அனைத்தையும் முடித்த பின்பு, ஏற்ற காலம் வரும்வரை அவரைவிட்டு அகன்றது.

மறைநூலில் சொல்லியிருப்பது இதுவே: “வார்த்தை உனக்கு மிக அருகில் உள்ளது; உன் வாயில், உன் இதயத்தில் உள்ளது.” இதுவே நீங்கள் நம்பிக்கை கொள்ளவேண்டும் என நாங்கள் பறைசாற்றும் செய்தியாகும். ஏனெனில், ‘இயேசு ஆண்டவர்’ என வாயார அறிக்கையிட்டு, இறந்த அவரைக் கடவுள் உயிர்த்தெழச் செய்தார் என நீங்கள் உள்ளூர நம்பினால் மீட்புப் பெறுவீர்கள். இவ்வாறு உள்ளூர நம்புவோர் கடவுளுக்கு ஏற்புடையவர் ஆவர்; வாயார அறிக்கையிடுவோர் மீட்புப் பெறுவர். ஏனெனில், “அவர்மீது நம்பிக்கை கொண்டோர் வெட்கத்திற்கு உள்ளாக மாட்டார்” என்பது மறைநூல் கூற்று.

இதில் யூதர் என்றோ கிரேக்கர் என்றோ வேறுபாடில்லை; அனைவருக்கும் ஆண்டவர் ஒருவரே. அவரை நோக்கி மன்றாடும் யாவருக்கும் அவர் அளவற்ற நலன்களைப் பொழிகிறார். “ஆண்டவரின் திருப்பெயரை அறிக்கையிட்டு மன்றாடுகிறவர் எவரும் மீட்புப் பெறுவர்” என்று எழுதியுள்ளது அல்லவா?

மோசே மக்களை நோக்கிக் கூறியது:

முதற்பலன் நிறைந்த கூடையை குரு உன் கையிலிருந்து எடுத்து, அதை உன் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரது பலிபீடத்தின்முன் வைப்பார். நீ உன் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவர் முன்னிலையில் அறிக்கையிட்டுக் கூறவேண்டியது:

Jesus noticed a tax collector, Levi by name, sitting by the customs house, and said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And leaving everything he got up and followed him.

  In his honour Levi held a great reception in his house, and with them at table was a large gathering of tax collectors and others. The Pharisees and their scribes complained to his disciples and said, ‘Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?’ Jesus said to them in reply, ‘It is not those who are well who need the doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the virtuous, but sinners to repentance.’

A reading from the book of Isaiah 58:9-14

The Lord says this:

If you do away with the yoke,

the clenched fist, the wicked word,

if you give your bread to the hungry,

and relief to the oppressed,

your light will rise in the darkness,

and your shadows become like noon.

The Lord will always guide you,

giving you relief in desert places.

He will give strength to your bones

and you shall be like a watered garden,

like a spring of water

whose waters never run dry.

You will rebuild the ancient ruins,

build up on the old foundations.

You will be called ‘Breach-mender’,

‘Restorer of ruined houses.’

If you refrain from trampling the sabbath,

and doing business on the holy day,

if you call the Sabbath ‘Delightful’,

and the day sacred to the Lord ‘Honourable’,

if you honour it by abstaining from travel,

from doing business and from gossip,

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு சுங்கச் சாவடியில் அமர்ந்திருந்த லேவி என்னும் பெயருடைய வரிதண்டுபவர் ஒருவரைக் கண்டார்; அவரிடம், “என்னைப் பின்பற்றி வா!” என்றார். அவர் அனைத்தையும் விட்டுவிட்டு எழுந்து இயேசுவைப் பின்பற்றிச் சென்றார்.

இந்த லேவி தம் வீட்டில் அவருக்கு ஒரு பெரிய விருந்து அளித்தார். வரிதண்டுபவர்களும் மற்றவர்களும் பெருந்திரளாய் அவர்களோடு பந்தியில் அமர்ந்தார்கள். பரிசேயர்களும் அவர்களைச் சேர்ந்த மறைநூல் அறிஞர்களும் முணுமுணுத்து இயேசுவின் சீடரிடம், “வரிதண்டுபவர்க ளோடும் பாவிகளோடும் சேர்ந்து நீங்கள் உண்பதும் குடிப்பதும் ஏன்?” என்று கேட்டனர். இயேசு அவர்களுக்கு மறுமொழியாக, “நோயற்றவர்க்கு அல்ல, நோயுற்றவர்க்கே மருத்துவர் தேவை. நேர்மையாளர்களை அல்ல, பாவிகளையே மனம் மாற அழைக்க வந்தேன்” என்றார்.
