ஏப்ரல் 17 :  நற்செய்தி வாசகம்

இயேசு தமக்குரியோர்மேல் இறுதிவரையும் அன்பு செலுத்தினார்.

✠ யோவான் எழுதிய தூய நற்செய்தியிலிருந்து வாசகம் 13: 1-15

பாஸ்கா விழா தொடங்க இருந்தது. தாம் இவ்வுலகத்தை விட்டுத் தந்தையிடம் செல்வதற்கான நேரம் வந்துவிட்டது என்பதை இயேசு அறிந்திருந்தார். உலகில் வாழ்ந்த தமக்குரியோர்மேல் அன்பு கொண்டிருந்த அவர் அவர்கள்மேல் இறுதிவரையும் அன்பு செலுத்தினார்.

இயேசுவைக் காட்டிக்கொடுக்கும் எண்ணத்தை அலகை சீமோனின் மகனாகிய யூதாசு இஸ்காரியோத்தின் உள்ளத்தில் எழச் செய்திருந்தது. இரவுணவு வேளையில், தந்தை அனைத்தையும் தம் கையில் ஒப்படைத்துள்ளார் என்பதையும் தாம் கடவுளிடமிருந்து வந்ததுபோல் அவரிடமே திரும்பச் செல்ல வேண்டும் என்பதையும் அறிந்தவராய், இயேசு பந்தியிலிருந்து எழுந்து, தம் மேலுடையைக் கழற்றி வைத்துவிட்டு, ஒரு துண்டை எடுத்து இடுப்பில் கட்டிக்கொண்டார். பின்னர் ஒரு குவளையில் தண்ணீர் எடுத்துச் சீடர்களுடைய காலடிகளைக் கழுவி இடுப்பில் கட்டியிருந்த துண்டால் துடைக்கத் தொடங்கினார்.

சீமோன் பேதுருவிடம் இயேசு வந்தபோது அவர், “ஆண்டவரே, நீரா என் காலடிகளைக் கழுவப் போகிறீர்?” என்று கேட்டார். இயேசு மறுமொழியாக, “நான் செய்வது இன்னதென்று இப்போது உனக்குப் புரியாது; பின்னரே புரிந்துகொள்வாய்” என்றார். பேதுரு அவரிடம், “நீர் என் காலடிகளைக் கழுவ விடவேமாட்டேன்” என்றார். இயேசு அவரைப் பார்த்து, “நான் உன் காலடிகளைக் கழுவாவிட்டால் என்னோடு உனக்குப் பங்கு இல்லை” என்றார். அப்போது சீமோன் பேதுரு, “அப்படியானால் ஆண்டவரே, என் காலடிகளை மட்டும் அல்ல, என் கைகளையும் தலையையும்கூடக் கழுவும்” என்றார். இயேசு அவரிடம், “குளித்துவிட்டவர் தம் காலடிகளை மட்டும் கழுவினால் போதும். அவர் தூய்மையாகிவிடுவார். நீங்களும் தூய்மையாய் இருக்கிறீர்கள். ஆனாலும் அனைவரும் தூய்மையாய் இல்லை” என்றார். தம்மைக் காட்டிக் கொடுப்பவன் எவன் என்று அவருக்கு ஏற்கெனவே தெரிந்திருந்தது. எனவேதான் ‘உங்களுள் அனைவரும் தூய்மையாய் இல்லை’ என்றார்.

அவர்களுடைய காலடிகளைக் கழுவியபின் இயேசு தம் மேலுடையை அணிந்துகொண்டு மீண்டும் பந்தியில் அமர்ந்து அவர்களிடம் கூறியது: “நான் உங்களுக்குச் செய்தது என்னவென்று உங்களுக்குப் புரிந்ததா? நீங்கள் என்னைப் ‘போதகர்’ என்றும் ‘ஆண்டவர்’ என்றும் அழைக்கிறீர்கள். நீங்கள் அவ்வாறு கூப்பிடுவது முறையே. நான் போதகர்தான், ஆண்டவர்தான். ஆகவே ஆண்டவரும் போதகருமான நான் உங்கள் காலடிகளைக் கழுவினேன் என்றால் நீங்களும் ஒருவர் மற்றவருடைய காலடிகளைக் கழுவக் கடமைப்பட்டிருக்கிறீர்கள். நான் செய்ததுபோல நீங்களும் செய்யுமாறு நான் உங்களுக்கு முன்மாதிரி காட்டினேன்” என்றார்.

திருத்தூதர் பவுல் கொரிந்தியருக்கு எழுதிய முதல் திருமுகத்திலிருந்து வாசகம் 11: 23-26

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

ஆண்டவரிடமிருந்து நான் எதைப் பெற்றுக்கொண்டேனோ அதையே உங்களிடம் ஒப்படைக்கிறேன். அதாவது, ஆண்டவராகிய இயேசு காட்டிக்கொடுக்கப்பட்ட அந்த இரவில், அப்பத்தை எடுத்து, கடவுளுக்கு நன்றி செலுத்தி, அதைப் பிட்டு, “இது உங்களுக்கான என் உடல். இதை என் நினைவாகச் செய்யுங்கள்” என்றார். அப்படியே உணவு அருந்தியபின் கிண்ணத்தையும் எடுத்து, “இந்தக் கிண்ணம் என் இரத்தத்தால் நிலைப்படுத்தப்படும் புதிய உடன்படிக்கை. நீங்கள் இதிலிருந்து பருகும் போதெல்லாம் என் நினைவாக இவ்வாறு செய்யுங்கள்” என்றார்.

ஆதலால் நீங்கள் இந்த அப்பத்தை உண்டு கிண்ணத்திலிருந்து பருகும் போதெல்லாம் ஆண்டவருடைய சாவை அவர் வரும்வரை அறிவிக்கிறீர்கள்.

பாஸ்கா இராவுணவு பற்றிய விதிமுறைகள்.

விடுதலைப் பயண நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் 12: 1-8, 11-14

எகிப்து நாட்டில் ஆண்டவர் மோசேக்கும் ஆரோனுக்கும் பின்வருமாறு கூறினார்: உங்களுக்கு மாதங்களில் தலையாயது இம்மாதமே! ஆண்டில் உங்களுக்கு முதல் மாதமும் இதுவே! இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் கூட்டமைப்பு முழுவதற்கும் நீங்கள் அறிவியுங்கள்:

அவர்கள் இம்மாதம் பத்தாம் நாள், குடும்பத்துக்கு ஓர் ஆடு, வீட்டிற்கு ஓர் ஆடு என்று தேர்ந்தெடுத்துக் கொள்ளட்டும். ஓர் ஆட்டினை உண்ண ஒரு வீட்டில் போதிய ஆள்கள் இல்லையெனில், உண்போரின் எண்ணிக்கைக்கும் உண்ணும் அளவுக்கும் ஏற்ப அண்டை வீட்டாரைச் சேர்த்துக்கொள்ளட்டும். ஆடு குறைபாடற்றதாக, கிடாயாக, ஒரு வயது குட்டியாக இருக்க வேண்டும். தேர்ந்தெடுப்பது வெள்ளாடாகவோ செம்மறியாடாகவோ இருக்கலாம். இம்மாதம் பதினான்காம் நாள்வரை அதை வைத்துப் பேணுங்கள். அந்நாள் மாலை மங்கும் வேளையில் இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் கூட்டமைப்பின் அனைத்துச் சபையும் அதை வெட்ட வேண்டும். இரத்தத்தில் சிறிதளவு எடுத்து, உண்ணும் வீடுகளின் இரு கதவு நிலைகளிலும், மேல் சட்டத்திலும் பூச வேண்டும். இறைச்சியை அந்த இரவிலேயே உண்ண வேண்டும். நெருப்பில் அதனை வாட்டி, புளிப்பற்ற அப்பத்தோடும் கசப்புக் கீரையோடும் உண்ண வேண்டும்.

நீங்கள் அதனை உண்ணும் முறையாவது: இடையில் கச்சை கட்டி, கால்களில் காலணி அணிந்து, கையில் கோல் பிடித்து, விரைவாக உண்ணுங்கள். இது ‘ஆண்டவரின் பாஸ்கா'. ஏனெனில், நான் இன்றிரவிலேயே எகிப்து நாடெங்கும் கடந்து சென்று, எகிப்து நாட்டில் மனிதர் தொடங்கி விலங்குவரை அனைத்து ஆண்பால் தலைப்பிறப்பையும் சாகடிப்பேன். எகிப்தின் தெய்வங்கள் அனைத்தின்மேலும் நான் தீர்ப்பிடுவேன். நானே ஆண்டவர்! இரத்தம் நீங்கள் இருக்கும் வீடுகளில் உங்களுக்கு அடையாளமாக இருக்கும். நான் இரத்தத்தைக் கண்டு உங்களைக் கடந்து செல்வேன். எகிப்து நாட்டில் நான் அவர்களைச் சாகடிக்கும்போது, கொல்லும் கொள்ளை நோய் எதுவும் உங்கள் மேல் வராது.

இந்நாள் உங்களுக்கு ஒரு நினைவு நாளாக விளங்கும். இதனை ஆண்டவரின் விழாவாக நீங்கள் தலைமுறைதோறும் கொண்டாடுங்கள். இந்த விழா உங்களுக்கு நிலையான நியமமாக இருப்பதாக!

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 13:1-15

It was before the festival of the Passover, and Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to pass from this world to the Father. He had always loved those who were his in the world, but now he showed how perfect his love was.

  They were at supper, and the devil had already put it into the mind of Judas Iscariot son of Simon, to betray him. Jesus knew that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he had come from God and was returning to God, and he got up from table, removed his outer garment and, taking a towel, wrapped it round his waist; he then poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel he was wearing. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, ‘Lord, are you going to wash my feet?’ Jesus answered, ‘At the moment you do not know what I am doing, but later you will understand.’ ‘Never!’ said Peter ‘You shall never wash my feet.’ Jesus replied, ‘If I do not wash you, you can have nothing in common with me.’ ‘Then, Lord,’ said Simon Peter ‘not only my feet, but my hands and my head as well!’ Jesus said, ‘No one who has taken a bath needs washing, he is clean all over. You too are clean, though not all of you are.’ He knew who was going to betray him, that was why he said, ‘though not all of you are.’

  When he had washed their feet and put on his clothes again he went back to the table. ‘Do you understand’ he said ‘what I have done to you? You call me Master and Lord, and rightly; so I am. If I, then, the Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you should wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done to you.’

A reading from the first letter of St.Paul to the Corinthians 11: 23-26 

This is what I received from the Lord, and in turn passed on to you: that on the same night that he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread, and thanked God for it and broke it, and he said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this as a memorial of me.’ In the same way he took the cup after supper, and said, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Whenever you drink it, do this as a memorial of me.’ Until the Lord comes, therefore, every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are proclaiming his death.

The Passover is a day of festival for all generations, for ever

A reading from the book of Exodus 12:1-8,11-14 

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt:

  ‘This month is to be the first of all the others for you, the first month of your year. Speak to the whole community of Israel and say, “On the tenth day of this month each man must take an animal from the flock, one for each family: one animal for each household. If the household is too small to eat the animal, a man must join with his neighbour, the nearest to his house, as the number of persons requires. You must take into account what each can eat in deciding the number for the animal. It must be an animal without blemish, a male one year old; you may take it from either sheep or goats. You must keep it till the fourteenth day of the month when the whole assembly of the community of Israel shall slaughter it between the two evenings. Some of the blood must then be taken and put on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses where it is eaten. That night, the flesh is to be eaten, roasted over the fire; it must be eaten with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. You shall eat it like this: with a girdle round your waist, sandals on your feet, a staff in your hand. You shall eat it hastily: it is a passover in honour of the Lord. That night, I will go through the land of Egypt and strike down all the first-born in the land of Egypt, man and beast alike, and I shall deal out punishment to all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord! The blood shall serve to mark the houses that you live in. When I see the blood I will pass over you and you shall escape the destroying plague when I strike the land of Egypt. அக்காலத்தில்

பன்னிருவருள் ஒருவனாகிய யூதாசு இஸ்காரியோத்து தலைமைக் குருவிடம் வந்து, ‘‘இயேசுவை உங்களுக்கு நான் காட்டிக்கொடுத்தால் எனக்கு என்ன தருவீர்கள்?” என்று கேட்டான். அவர்களும் முப்பது வெள்ளிக் காசுகளை எண்ணி அவனுக்குக் கொடுத்தார்கள். அதுமுதல் அவன் அவரைக் காட்டிக்கொடுப்பதற்கு வாய்ப்புத் தேடிக்கொண்டிருந்தான்.

புளிப்பற்ற அப்ப விழாவின் முதல் நாளில் சீடர்கள் இயேசுவை அணுகி வந்து, ‘‘நீர் பாஸ்கா விருந்துண்ண நாங்கள் எங்கே ஏற்பாடு செய்யவேண்டும் என விரும்புகிறீர்?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். இயேசு அவர்களிடம், ‘‘நீங்கள் புறப்பட்டு நகருக்குள் சென்று இன்னாரிடம் போய், ‘எனது நேரம் நெருங்கி வந்துவிட்டது; என் சீடர்களோடு உம் வீட்டில் பாஸ்கா கொண்டாடப்போகிறேன்’ எனப் போதகர் கூறுகிறார் எனச் சொல்லுங்கள்” என்றார். இயேசு தங்களுக்குப் பணித்தபடியே சீடர்கள் செயல்பட்டுப் பாஸ்கா விருந்துக்கு ஏற்பாடு செய்தார்கள்.

மாலை வேளையானதும் அவர் பன்னிருவரோடும் பந்தியில் அமர்ந்தார். அவர்கள் உண்டுகொண்டிருந்தபொழுது அவர், ‘‘உங்களுள் ஒருவன் என்னைக் காட்டிக்கொடுப்பான் என உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்” என்றார். அப்பொழுது அவர்கள் மிகவும் வருத்தமுற்றவர்களாய், ‘‘ஆண்டவரே, அது நானோ?” என ஒவ்வொருவரும் அவரிடம் கேட்கத் தொடங்கினார்கள். அதற்கு அவர், ‘‘என்னுடன் பாத்திரத்தில் தொட்டு உண்பவனே என்னைக் காட்டிக்கொடுப்பான். மானிடமகன், தம்மைப்பற்றி மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ளபடியே போகிறார். ஆனால், ஐயோ! அவரைக் காட்டிக்கொடுக்கிறவனுக்குக் கேடு; அம்மனிதன் பிறவாதிருந்தால் அவனுக்கு நலமாய் இருந்திருக்கும்” என்றார். அவரைக் காட்டிக்கொடுத்த யூதாசும் ‘‘ரபி, நானோ?” என அவரிடம் கேட்க, இயேசு, ‘‘நீயே சொல்லிவிட்டாய்” என்றார்.

ஆண்டவரின் அருள்வாக்கு.

நலிந்தவனை நல்வாக்கால் ஊக்குவிக்கும் அறிவை நான் பெற்றிட, ஆண்டவராகிய என் தலைவர், கற்றோனின் நாவை எனக்கு அளித்துள்ளார்; காலைதோறும் அவர் என்னைத் தட்டி எழுப்புகின்றார்; கற்போர் கேட்பதுபோல் நானும் செவிகொடுக்கச் செய்கின்றார். ஆண்டவராகிய என் தலைவர் என் செவியைத் திறந்துள்ளார்.

நான் கிளர்ந்தெழவில்லை; விலகிச் செல்லவுமில்லை. அடிப்போர்க்கு என் முதுகையும், தாடியைப் பிடுங்குவோர்க்கு என் தாடையையும் ஒப்புவித்தேன். நிந்தனை செய்வோர்க்கும் காறி உமிழ்வோர்க்கும் என் முகத்தை மறைக்கவில்லை. ஆண்டவராகிய என் தலைவர் துணை நிற்கின்றார்; நான் அவமானம் அடையேன்; என் முகத்தைக் கற்பாறை ஆக்கிக்கொண்டேன்; இழிநிலையை நான் அடைவதில்லை என்றறிவேன். நான் குற்றமற்றவன் என எனக்குத் தீர்ப்பு வழங்குபவர் அருகில் உள்ளார்.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 26:14-25 

One of the Twelve, the man called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, ‘What are you prepared to give me if I hand him over to you?’ They paid him thirty silver pieces, and from that moment he looked for an opportunity to betray him.

  Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus to say, ‘Where do you want us to make the preparations for you to eat the passover?’ ‘Go to so-and-so in the city’ he replied ‘and say to him, “The Master says: My time is near. It is at your house that I am keeping Passover with my disciples.”’ The disciples did what Jesus told them and prepared the Passover.

  When evening came he was at table with the twelve disciples. And while they were eating he said ‘I tell you solemnly, one of you is about to betray me.’ They were greatly distressed and started asking him in turn, ‘Not I, Lord, surely?’ He answered, ‘Someone who has dipped his hand into the dish with me, will betray me. The Son of Man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born!’ Judas, who was to betray him; asked in his turn, ‘Not I, Rabbi, surely?’ ‘They are your own words’ answered Jesus.

A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah 50: 4-9

The Lord has given me

a disciple’s tongue.

So that I may know how to reply to the wearied

he provides me with speech.

Each morning he wakes me to hear,

to listen like a disciple.

The Lord has opened my ear.

For my part, I made no resistance,

neither did I turn away.

I offered my back to those who struck me,

my cheeks to those who tore at my beard;

I did not cover my face

against insult and spittle.

The Lord comes to my help,

so that I am untouched by the insults.

So, too, I set my face like flint;

I know I shall not be shamed.

My vindicator is here at hand. Does anyone start proceedings against me?

Then let us go to court together.

Who thinks he has a case against me?

Let him approach me.

அக்காலத்தில்

தம் சீடர்களுடன் பந்தியமர்ந்த இயேசு உள்ளம் கலங்கியவராய், “உங்களுள் ஒருவன் என்னைக் காட்டிக்கொடுப்பான் என உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்” என்று திட்டவட்டமாகக் கூறினார். யாரைப்பற்றி அவர் இப்படிக் கூறினார் என்று தெரியாமல் சீடர்கள் குழப்பமுற்று ஒருவரை ஒருவர் நோக்கினார்கள்.

இயேசுவின் சீடருள் ஒருவர் அவர் அருகில் அவர் மார்புப் பக்கமாய்ச் சாய்ந்திருந்தார். அவர்மேல் இயேசு அன்புகொண்டிருந்தார். சீமோன் பேதுரு அவருக்குச் சைகை காட்டி, “யாரைப்பற்றிக் கூறுகிறார் எனக் கேள்” என்றார். இயேசுவின் அருகில் அவர் மார்புப் பக்கமாய்ச் சாய்ந்திருந்த அவர், “ஆண்டவரே அவன் யார்?” என்று கேட்டார். இயேசு மறுமொழியாக, “நான் யாருக்கு அப்பத் துண்டைத் தோய்த்துக் கொடுக்கிறேனோ அவன்தான்” எனச் சொல்லி, அப்பத் துண்டைத் தோய்த்துச் சீமோன் இஸ்காரியோத்தின் மகனாகிய யூதாசுக்குக் கொடுத்தார். அவன் அப்பத் துண்டைப் பெற்றதும் சாத்தான் அவனுக்குள் நுழைந்தான்.

இயேசு அவனிடம், “நீ செய்ய இருப்பதை விரைவில் செய்” என்றார். இயேசு ஏன் அவனிடம் இப்படிக் கூறினார் என்பதைப் பந்தியில் அமர்ந்திருந்தோர் யாரும் புரிந்துகொள்ளவில்லை. பணப்பை யூதாசிடம் இருந்ததால், திருவிழாவுக்குத் தேவையானதை வாங்கவோ ஏழைகளுக்கு ஏதாவது கொடுக்கவோ இயேசு அவனிடம் கூறியிருக்கலாம் என்று சிலர் நினைத்துக்கொண்டனர். யூதாசு அப்பத் துண்டைப் பெற்றுக் கொண்டவுடன் வெளியே போனான். அது இரவு நேரம்.

அவன் வெளியே போனபின் இயேசு, “இப்போது மானிடமகன் மாட்சி பெற்றுள்ளார். அவர் வழியாகக் கடவுளும் மாட்சி பெற்றுள்ளார். கடவுள் அவர் வழியாக மாட்சி பெற்றாரானால் கடவுளும் தம் வழியாய் அவரை மாட்சிப்படுத்துவார்; அதையும் உடனே செய்வார். பிள்ளைகளே, இன்னும் சிறிது காலமே உங்களோடு இருப்பேன். நீங்கள் என்னைத் தேடுவீர்கள். ஆனால் நான் போகும் இடத்திற்கு உங்களால் வர இயலாது. இதையே யூதர்களுக்குச் சொன்னேன்; இப்போது உங்களுக்கும் சொல்கிறேன்” என்றார்.

While at supper with his disciples, Jesus was troubled in spirit and declared, ‘I tell you most solemnly, one of you will betray me.’ The disciples looked at one another, wondering which he meant. The disciple Jesus loved was reclining next to Jesus; Simon Peter signed to him and said, ‘Ask who it is he means’, so leaning back on Jesus’ breast he said, ‘Who is it, Lord?’ ‘It is the one’ replied Jesus ‘to whom I give the piece of bread that I shall dip in the dish.’ He dipped the piece of bread and gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot. At that instant, after Judas had taken the bread, Satan entered him. Jesus then said, ‘What you are going to do, do quickly.’ None of the others at table understood the reason he said this. Since Judas had charge of the common fund, some of them thought Jesus was telling him, ‘Buy what we need for the festival’, or telling him to give something to the poor. As soon as Judas had taken the piece of bread he went out. Night had fallen.

  When he had gone Jesus said:

‘Now has the Son of Man been glorified,

and in him God has been glorified.

If God has been glorified in him,

God will in turn glorify him in himself,

and will glorify him very soon.

‘My little children,

I shall not be with you much longer.

You will look for me,

And, as I told the Jews,

Islands, listen to me,

pay attention, remotest peoples.

The Lord called me before I was born,

from my mother’s womb he pronounced my name.

He made my mouth a sharp sword,

and hid me in the shadow of his hand.

He made me into a sharpened arrow,

and concealed me in his quiver.

He said to me, ‘You are my servant (Israel)

in whom I shall be glorified’;

while I was thinking, ‘I have toiled in vain,

I have exhausted myself for nothing’;

and all the while my cause was with the Lord,

Six days before the Passover, Jesus went to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom he had raised from the dead. They gave a dinner for him there; Martha waited on them and Lazarus was among those at table. Mary brought in a pound of very costly ointment, pure nard, and with it anointed the feet of Jesus, wiping them with her hair; the house was full of the scent of the ointment. Then Judas Iscariot – one of his disciples, the man who was to betray him – said, ‘Why wasn’t this ointment sold for three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor?’ He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he was in charge of the common fund and used to help himself to the contributions. So Jesus said, ‘Leave her alone; she had to keep this scent for the day of my burial. You have the poor with you always, you will not always have me.’

  Meanwhile a large number of Jews heard that he was there and came not only on account of Jesus but also to see Lazarus whom he had raised from the dead. Then the chief priests decided to kill Lazarus as well, since it was on his account that many of the Jews were leaving them and believing in Jesus.

பாஸ்கா விழாவுக்கு ஆறு நாளுக்கு முன்பு இயேசு பெத்தானியாவுக்குச் சென்றார். அங்குதான் இயேசு இலாசரை உயிர்த்தெழச் செய்தார். அங்கு அவருக்கு விருந்து அளிக்கப்பட்டது. மார்த்தா உணவு பரிமாறினார். இயேசுவோடு பந்தியில் அமர்ந்திருந்தவர்களுடன் இலாசரும் இருந்தார். மரியா இலாமிச்சை என்னும் கலப்பற்ற விலையுயர்ந்த நறுமணத் தைலம் ஏறக்குறைய முந்நூற்று இருபது கிராம் கொண்டுவந்து இயேசுவின் காலடிகளில் பூசி, அதனைத் தமது கூந்தலால் துடைத்தார். தைலத்தின் நறுமணம் வீடெங்கும் கமழ்ந்தது.

இயேசுவின் சீடருள் ஒருவனும் அவரைக் காட்டிக்கொடுக்க இருந்தவனுமான யூதாசு இஸ்காரியோத்து, “இந்தத் தைலத்தை முந்நூறு தெனாரியத்துக்கு விற்று, அப்பணத்தை ஏழைகளுக்குக் கொடுத்திருக்கக் கூடாதா?” என்று கேட்டான். ஏழைகள்பால் கொண்டிருந்த அக்கறையினால் அல்ல, மாறாக அவன் ஒரு திருடனாய் இருந்ததால்தான் இப்படிக் கேட்டான். பணப்பை அவனிடம் இருந்தது. அதில் போடப்பட்ட பணத்திலிருந்து அவன் எடுத்துக்கொள்வதுண்டு. அப்போது இயேசு, “மரியாவைத் தடுக்காதீர்கள். என் அடக்க நாளை முன்னிட்டு அவர் இதைச் செய்யட்டும். ஏழைகள் உங்களோடு என்றும் இருக்கிறார்கள். ஆனால் நான் உங்களோடு என்றும் இருக்கப்போவதில்லை” என்றார்.

இயேசு அங்கு இருப்பதை அறிந்த யூதர்கள் பெருந்திரளாய் வந்தார்கள். அவர்கள் இயேசுவை முன்னிட்டு மட்டும் அல்ல, அவர் உயிர்த்தெழச்செய்திருந்த இலாசரைக் காண்பதற்காகவும் வந்தார்கள். ஆதலால் தலைமைக் குருக்கள் இலாசரையும் கொன்றுவிடத் திட்டமிட்டார்கள். ஏனெனில் இலாசரின் காரணமாக யூதர்களிடமிருந்து பலர் விலகி இயேசுவிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொண்டனர்.

லூக்கா எழுதியபடி நம் ஆண்டவராகிய இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் திருப்பாடுகள் 22: 14- 23: 56

இயேசுவின் சீடர்கள் பாஸ்கா விருந்துக்கு ஏற்பாடு செய்தபின் நேரம் ஆனதும் இயேசு திருத்தூதரோடு பந்தியில் அமர்ந்தார். அப்போது அவர் அவர்களை நோக்கி, “நான் துன்பங்கள் படுமுன் உங்களோடு இந்தப் பாஸ்கா விருந்தை உண்பதற்கு மிக மிக ஆவலாய் இருந்தேன். ஏனெனில் இறையாட்சியில் இது நிறைவேறும்வரை இதை நான் உண்ணமாட்டேன் என்று உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்” என்றார்.

மேலும் தங்களுக்குள்ளே பெரியவராக எண்ணப்பட வேண்டியவர் யார் என்ற விவாதம் அவர்களிடையே எழுந்தது. இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “பிற இனத்தவரின் அரசர்கள் மக்களை அடக்கி ஆளுகின்றார்கள்; அதிகாரம் காட்டுகின்றவர்கள் நன்மை செய்பவர்கள் என அழைக்கப்படுகின்றார்கள். ஆனால் நீங்கள் அப்படிச் செய்யலாகாது. உங்களுள் பெரியவர் சிறியவராகவும் ஆட்சிபுரிபவர் தொண்டு புரிபவராகவும் மாற வேண்டும். யார் பெரியவர்? பந்தியில் அமர்ந்திருப்பவரா? அல்லது பணிவிடை புரிபவரா? பந்தியில் அமர்ந்திருப்பவர் அல்லவா? நான் உங்கள் நடுவே பணிவிடை புரிபவனாக இருக்கிறேன்.

இயேசு சீடர்களிடம், “நான் உங்களைப் பணப்பையோ வேறு பையோ மிதியடியோ எதுவுமில்லாமல் அனுப்பியபோது, உங்களுக்கு ஏதாவது குறை இருந்ததா?” என்று கேட்டார். அவர்கள், “ஒரு குறையும் இருந்ததில்லை” என்றார்கள். அவர் அவர்களிடம், “ஆனால், இப்பொழுது பணப்பை உடையவர் அதை எடுத்துக்கொள்ளட்டும்; வேறு பை உடையவரும் அவ்வாறே செய்யட்டும். வாள் இல்லாதவர் தம் மேலுடையை விற்று வாள் வாங்கிக்கொள்ளட்டும். ஏனெனில் நான் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்: ‘கொடியவருள் ஒருவராகக் கருதப்பட்டார்’ என்று மறைநூலில் எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளது என் வாழ்வில் நிறைவேற வேண்டும். என்னைப் பற்றியவை எல்லாம் நிறைவேறி வருகின்றன” என்றார். அவர்கள், “ஆண்டவரே, இதோ! இங்கே இரு வாள்கள் உள்ளன” என்றார்கள். இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “போதும்” என்றார்.

இயேசு அங்கிருந்து புறப்பட்டுத் தம் வழக்கப்படி ஒலிவ மலைக்குச் சென்றார். சீடர்களும் அவரைப் பின்தொடர்ந்தார்கள். அந்த இடத்தை அடைந்ததும் அவர் அவர்களிடம், “சோதனைக்கு உட்படாதிருக்க இறைவனிடம் வேண்டுங்கள்,” என்றார். பிறகு அவர் அவர்களை விட்டுக் கல்லெறி தூரம் விலகிச் சென்று, முழந்தாள்படியிட்டு, இறைவனிடம் வேண்டினார்: “தந்தையே, உமக்கு விருப்பமானால் இத்துன்பக் கிண்ணத்தை என்னிடமிருந்து அகற்றும். ஆனாலும் என் விருப்பப்படி அல்ல; உம் விருப்பப்படியே நிகழட்டும்” என்று கூறினார். அப்போது விண்ணகத்திலிருந்து ஒரு தூதர் அவருக்குத் தோன்றி அவரை வலுப்படுத்தினார். அவரோ மிகுந்த வேதனைக்குள்ளாகவே, உருக்கமாய் இறைவனிடம் வேண்டிக்கொண்டிருந்தார். அவரது வியர்வை பெரும் இரத்தத் துளிகளைப் போலத் தரையில் விழுந்தது.

அவர் இறைவேண்டலை முடித்துவிட்டு எழுந்து சீடர்களிடம் வந்தபோது அவர்கள் துயரத்தால் சோர்வுற்றுத் தூங்கிக்கொண்டிருப்பதைக் கண்டார். அவர்களிடம், “என்ன, உறங்கிக்கொண்டா இருக்கிறீர்கள்? சோதனைக்கு உட்படாதிருக்க விழித்திருந்து இறைவனிடம் வேண்டுங்கள்” என்றார்.

இயேசு தொடர்ந்து பேசிக்கொண்டிந்தபோது, இதோ! மக்கள் கூட்டமாய் வந்தனர். பன்னிருவருள் ஒருவனான யூதாசு என்பவன் அவர்களுக்குமுன் வந்து அவரை முத்தமிட நெருங்கினான். இயேசு அவனிடம், “யூதாசே, முத்தமிட்டா மானிடமகனைக் காட்டிக்கொடுக்கப் போகிறாய்?” என்றார். அவரைச் சூழ நின்றவர்கள் நிகழப்போவதை உணர்ந்து, “ஆண்டவரே, வாளால் வெட்டலாமா?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். அப்பொழுது அவர்களுள் ஒருவர் தலைமைக் குருவின் பணியாளரைத் தாக்கி அவருடைய வலக் காதைத் துண்டித்தார். இயேசு அவர்களைப் பார்த்து, “விடுங்கள், போதும்” என்று கூறி அவருடைய காதைத் தொட்டு நலமாக்கினார்.

அவர் தம்மிடம் வந்த தலைமைக் குருக்களையும் கோவில் காவல் தலைவர்களையும் மூப்பர்களையும் பார்த்து, “ஒரு கள்வனைப் பிடிக்க வருவதுபோல நீங்கள் வாள்களோடும் தடிகளோடும் வந்தது ஏன்? நான் நாள்தோறும் கோவிலில் உங்களோடு இருந்தும் நீங்கள் என்னைப் பிடிக்கவில்லையே. ஆனால் இது உங்களுடைய நேரம்; இப்போது இருள் அதிகாரம் செலுத்துகிறது” என்றார்.

பின்னர் அவர்கள் இயேசுவைக் கைது செய்து இழுத்துச் சென்று தலைமைக் குருவின் வீட்டுக்குக் கொண்டுபோனார்கள். பேதுரு தொலையில் அவரைப் பின்தொடர்ந்தார். வீட்டு உள்முற்றத்தின் நடுவில் நெருப்பு மூட்டி, அதைச் சுற்றி அவர்கள் உட்கார்ந்திருந்தார்கள். பேதுருவும் அவர்களோடு இருந்தார். அப்போது பணிப்பெண் ஒருவர் நெருப்பின் அருகில் அவர் அமர்ந்திருப்பதைக் கண்டு, அவரை உற்றுப்பார்த்து, “இவனும் அவனோடு இருந்தவன்” என்றார். அவரோ, “அம்மா, அவரை எனக்குத் தெரியாது” என்று மறுதலித்தார். சிறிது நேரத்திற்குப்பின் அவரைக் கண்ட வேறு ஒருவர், “நீயும் அவர்களைச் சேர்ந்தவன்தான்” என்றார். பேதுரு, “இல்லையப்பா” என்றார். ஏறக்குறைய ஒரு மணி நேரத்திற்குப் பின்பு மற்றொருவர், “உண்மையாகவே இவனும் அவனோடு இருந்தான்; இவனும் கலிலேயன்தான்” என்று வலியுறுத்திக் கூறினார். பேதுருவோ, “நீர் குறிப்பிடுபவரை எனக்குத் தெரியாது” என்றார். உடனேயே, அவர் தொடர்ந்து பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்தபோதே, சேவல் கூவிற்று.

ஆண்டவர் திரும்பி, பேதுருவைக் கூர்ந்து நோக்கினார்: “இன்று சேவல் கூவுமுன் நீ என்னை மும்முறை மறுதலிப்பாய்” என்று ஆண்டவர் தமக்குக் கூறியதைப் பேதுரு நினைவுகூர்ந்து, வெளியே சென்று மனம் நொந்து அழுதார்.

இயேசுவைப் பிடித்து வைத்திருந்தவர்கள் அவரை ஏளனம் செய்து நையப்புடைத்தார்கள். அவரது முகத்தை மூடி, “உன்னை அடித்தவர் யார்? இறைவாக்கினனே, சொல்” என்று கேட்டார்கள். இன்னும் பலவாறு அவரைப் பழித்துரைத்தார்கள்.

பொழுது விடிந்ததும் மக்களின் மூப்பர்களும் தலைமைக் குருக்களும் மறைநூல் அறிஞர்களும் கூடி வந்தார்கள்; இயேசுவை இழுத்துச் சென்று தங்கள் மூப்பர் சங்கத்தின் முன் நிறுத்தினார்கள். அவர்கள், “நீ மெசியாதானா? எங்களிடம் சொல்” என்று கேட்டார்கள். அவர் அவர்களிடம், “நான் உங்களிடம் சொன்னால் நீங்கள் நம்பமாட்டீர்கள்; நான் உங்களிடம் கேட்டாலும் பதில் சொல்லமாட்டீர்கள். இதுமுதல் மானிடமகன் வல்லவராம் கடவுளின் வலப்புறத்தில் வீற்றிருப்பார்” என்றார். அதற்கு அவர்கள் அனைவரும், “அப்படியானால் நீ இறைமகனா?” என்று கேட்டனர். அவரோ, “நான் இறைமகன் என நீங்களே சொல்லுகிறீர்கள்” என்று அவர்களுக்குச் சொன்னார். அதற்கு அவர்கள், “இன்னும் நமக்குச் சான்றுகள் தேவையா? இவன் வாயிலிருந்து நாமே கேட்டோமே” என்றார்கள்.

திரண்டிருந்த மக்கள் அனைவரும் எழுந்து இயேசுவைப் பிலாத்தின்முன் கொண்டு சென்றனர். “இவன் நம் மக்கள் சீரழியக் காரணமாக இருக்கிறான்; சீசருக்குக் கப்பம் கட்டக்கூடாது என்கிறான்; தானே மெசியாவாகிய அரசன் என்று சொல்லிக்கொள்கிறான். இவற்றையெல்லாம் நாங்களே கேட்டோம்” என்று அவர்கள் இயேசுவின்மேல் குற்றம் சுமத்தத் தொடங்கினார்கள். பிலாத்து அவரை நோக்கி, “நீ யூதரின் அரசனா?” என்று கேட்க, அவர், “அவ்வாறு நீர் சொல்கிறீர்” என்று பதில் கூறினார். பிலாத்து தலைமைக் குருக்களையும் மக்கள் கூட்டத்தையும் பார்த்து, “இவனிடம் நான் குற்றம் ஒன்றும் காணவில்லை” என்று கூறினான். ஆனால் அவர்கள், “இவன் கலிலேயா தொடங்கி யூதேயா வரை இவ்விடம் முழுவதிலும் மக்களுக்குக் கற்பித்து அவர்களைத் தூண்டிவிடுகிறான்” என்று வலியுறுத்திக் கூறினார்கள்.

இதைக் கேட்ட பிலாத்து, “இவன் கலிலேயனா?” என்று கேட்டான்; அவர் ஏரோதுவின் அதிகாரத்திற்கு உட்பட்டவர் என்று அவன் அறிந்து, அப்போது எருசலேமிலிருந்த ஏரோதிடம் அவரை அனுப்பினான்.

இயேசுவைக் கண்ட ஏரோது மட்டற்ற மகிழ்ச்சி அடைந்தான்; ஏனெனில், அவரைக் குறித்துக் கேள்விப்பட்டு அவரைக் காண நெடுங்காலமாய் விருப்பமாய் இருந்தான்; அவர் அரும் அடையாளம் ஏதாவது செய்வதைக் காணலாம் என்றும் நெடுங்காலமாய் எதிர்பார்த்திருந்தான். அவன் அவரிடம் பல கேள்விகள் கேட்டான். ஆனால் அவர் அவனுக்குப் பதில் எதுவும் கூறவில்லை. அங்கு நின்ற தலைமைக் குருக்களும் மறைநூல் அறிஞர்களும் அவர்மேல் மிகுதியான குற்றம் சுமத்திக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். ஏரோது தன் படைவீரரோடு அவரை இகழ்ந்து ஏளனம் செய்து, பளபளப்பான ஆடையை அவருக்கு உடுத்தி அவரைப் பிலாத்திடம் திருப்பி அனுப்பினான். அதுவரை ஒருவருக்கு ஒருவர் பகைவராய் இருந்த ஏரோதும் பிலாத்தும் அன்று நண்பர்களாயினர்.

பிலாத்து தலைமைக் குருக்களையும் ஆட்சியாளர்களையும் மக்களையும் ஒன்றாக வரவழைத்தான். அவர்களை நோக்கி, “மக்கள் சீரழியக் காரணமாய் இருக்கிறான் என்று இவனை என்னிடம் கொண்டு வந்தீர்களே; இதோ, நான் உங்கள் முன்னிலையில் விசாரித்தும் நீங்கள் சுமத்துகிற எந்தக் குற்றத்தையும் இவனிடத்தில் காணவில்லை. ஏரோதும் குற்றம் எதுவும் காணவில்லை; ஆகவே, அவர் இவனை நம்மிடம் திருப்பி அனுப்பியுள்ளார். மரண தண்டனைக்குரிய யாதொன்றையும் இவன் செய்யவில்லை என்பது தெளிவு. எனவே இவனைத் தண்டித்து விடுதலை செய்வேன்” என்றான். விழாவின்போது அவர்களுக்கென ஒரு கைதியை விடுவிக்க வேண்டிய கட்டாயம் அவனுக்கு இருந்தது.

திரண்டிருந்த மக்கள் அனைவரும், “இவன் ஒழிக! பரபாவை எங்களுக்கென விடுதலை செய்யும்” என்று கத்தினர். பரபா நகரில் நடந்த ஒரு கலகத்தில் ஈடுபட்டுக் கொலை செய்ததற்காகச் சிறையிலிடப்பட்டவன். பிலாத்து இயேசுவை விடுதலை செய்ய விரும்பி மீண்டும் அவர்களைக் கூப்பிட்டுப் பேசினான். ஆனால் அவர்கள், “அவனைச் சிலுவையில் அறையும், சிலுவையில் அறையும்” என்று கத்தினார்கள். மூன்றாம் முறையாக அவன் அவர்களை நோக்கி, “இவன் செய்த குற்றம் என்ன? மரண தண்டனைக்குரிய குற்றம் ஒன்றும் இவனிடம் நான் காணவில்லை. எனவே இவனைத் தண்டித்து விடுதலை செய்வேன்” என்றான். அவர்கள் அவரைச் சிலுவையில் அறைய வேண்டுமென்று உரத்த குரலில் வற்புறுத்திக் கேட்டார்கள்.

அவர்கள் குரலே வென்றது. அவர்கள் கேட்டபடியே பிலாத்து தீர்ப்பு அளித்தான். கலகத்தில் ஈடுபட்டு, கொலை செய்ததற்காகச் சிறையிலிடப்பட்டிருந்தவனை அவர்கள் கேட்டுக்கொண்டபடியே அவன் விடுதலை செய்தான்; இயேசுவை அவர்கள் விருப்பப்படி செய்ய விட்டுவிட்டான்.

அவர்கள் இயேசுவை இழுத்துச் சென்றுகொண்டிருந்தபோது சிரேன் ஊரைச் சேர்ந்த சீமோன் என்பவர் வயல்வெளியிலிருந்து வந்து கொண்டிருந்தார். அவர்கள் அவரைப் பிடித்து அவர்மேல் இயேசுவின் சிலுவையை வைத்து, அவருக்குப்பின் அதைச் சுமந்துகொண்டுபோகச் செய்தார்கள்.

பெருந்திரளான மக்களும் அவருக்காக மாரடித்துப் புலம்பி ஒப்பாரி வைத்த பெண்களும் அவர் பின்னே சென்றார்கள். இயேசு அப்பெண்கள் பக்கம் திரும்பி, “எருசலேம் மகளிரே, நீங்கள் எனக்காக அழவேண்டாம்; மாறாக உங்களுக்காகவும் உங்கள் மக்களுக்காகவும் அழுங்கள். ஏனெனில் இதோ, ஒரு காலம் வரும். அப்போது ‘மலடிகள் பேறுபெற்றோர்’ என்றும் ‘பிள்ளை பெறாதோரும் பால் கொடாதோரும் பேறுபெற்றோர்’ என்றும் சொல்வார்கள். அப்போது அவர்கள் மலைகளைப் பார்த்து, ‘எங்கள் மேல் விழுங்கள்’ எனவும் குன்றுகளைப் பார்த்து, ‘எங்களை மூடிக்கொள்ளுங்கள்’ எனவும் சொல்வார்கள். பச்சை மரத்துக்கே இவ்வாறு செய்கிறார்கள் என்றால் பட்ட மரத்துக்கு என்னதான் செய்யமாட்டார்கள்!” என்றார். வேறு இரண்டு குற்றவாளிகளையும் மரண தண்டனைக்காக அவர்கள் அவரோடு கொண்டு சென்றார்கள்.

மண்டை ஓடு எனப்படும் இடத்திற்கு வந்ததும் அங்கே அவரையும் வலப்புறம் ஒருவனும் இடப்புறம் ஒருவனுமாக அக்குற்றவாளிகளையும் அவர்கள் சிலுவைகளில் அறைந்தார்கள். அப்போது இயேசு, “தந்தையே, இவர்களை மன்னியும். ஏனெனில் தாங்கள் செய்வது என்னவென்று இவர்களுக்குத் தெரியவில்லை” என்று சொன்னார். அவர்கள் அவருடைய ஆடைகளைக் குலுக்கல் முறையில் பங்கிட்டுக்கொண்டார்கள்.

மக்கள் இவற்றைப் பார்த்துக்கொண்டு நின்றார்கள். ஆட்சியாளர்கள், “பிறரை விடுவித்தான்; இவன் கடவுளின் மெசியாவும், தேர்ந் தெடுக்கப்பட்டவனுமானால் தன்னையே விடுவித்துக்கொள்ளட்டும்” என்று கேலி செய்தார்கள். படைவீரர் அவரிடம் வந்து புளித்த திராட்சை இரசத்தைக் கொடுத்து, “நீ யூதர்களின் அரசனானால் உன்னைக் காப்பாற்றிக்கொள்” என்று எள்ளி நகையாடினர். “இவன் யூதரின் அரசன்” என்று அவரது சிலுவையின் மேல் எழுதி வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது.

சிலுவையில் தொங்கிக்கொண்டிருந்த குற்றவாளிகளுள் ஒருவன், “நீ மெசியாதானே! உன்னையும் எங்களையும் காப்பாற்று” என்று அவரைப் பழித்துரைத்தான். ஆனால் மற்றவன் அவனைக் கடிந்துகொண்டு, “கடவுளுக்கு நீ அஞ்சுவதில்லையா? நீயும் அதே தீர்ப்புக்குத்தானே உள்ளாகி இருக்கிறாய். நாம் தண்டிக்கப்படுவது முறையே. நம் செயல்களுக்கேற்ற தண்டனையை நாம் பெறுகிறோம். இவர் ஒரு குற்றமும் செய்யவில்லையே!” என்று பதிலுரைத்தான். பின்பு அவன், “இயேசுவே, நீர் ஆட்சியுரிமை பெற்று வரும்போது என்னை நினைவிற்கொள்ளும்” என்றான். அதற்கு இயேசு அவனிடம், “நீர் இன்று என்னோடு பேரின்ப வீட்டில் இருப்பீர் என உறுதியாக உமக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்” என்றார்.

ஏறக்குறைய நண்பகல் பன்னிரண்டு மணிமுதல் பிற்பகல் மூன்று மணிவரை நாடெங்கும் இருள் உண்டாயிற்று. கதிரவன் ஒளி கொடுக்கவில்லை. திருக்கோவிலின் திரை நடுவில் கிழிந்தது. “தந்தையே, உம் கையில் என் உயிரை ஒப்படைக்கிறேன்” என்று இயேசு உரத்த குரலில் கூறி உயிர் துறந்தார்.

இதைக் கண்ட நூற்றுவர் தலைவர், “இவர் உண்மையாகவே நேர்மையாளர்” என்று கூறிக் கடவுளைப் போற்றிப் புகழ்ந்தார். இக்காட்சியைக் காணக் கூடிவந்திருந்த மக்கள் அனைவரும் நிகழ்ந்தவற்றைக் கண்டு, மார்பில் அடித்துக்கொண்டு திரும்பிச் சென்றனர்.

அவருக்கு அறிமுகமான அனைவரும், கலிலேயாவிலிருந்து அவரைப் பின்பற்றி வந்திருந்த பெண்களும் தொலையிலிருந்து இவற்றைப் பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.

யோசேப்பு என்னும் பெயருடைய ஒருவர் இருந்தார். அவர் தலைமைச் சங்க உறுப்பினர், நல்லவர், நேர்மையாளர். தலைமைச் சங்கத்தாரின் திட்டத்துக்கும் செயலுக்கும் இணங்காத அவர் யூதேயாவிலுள்ள அரிமத்தியா ஊரைச் சேர்ந்தவர்; இறையாட்சியின் வருகைக்காகக் காத்திருந்தவர். அவர் பிலாத்திடம் போய் இயேசுவின் உடலைக் கேட்டார். அவர் அவரது உடலை இறக்கி, மெல்லிய துணியால் சுற்றி, பாறையில் குடைந்திருந்த கல்லறையில் வைத்தார். அதற்கு முன்பு யாரையும் அதில் அடக்கம் செய்ததில்லை. அன்று ஆயத்த நாள்; ஓய்வுநாளின் தொடக்கம். கலிலேயாவிலிருந்து அவரோடு வந்திருந்த பெண்கள் பின்தொடர்ந்து சென்று கல்லறையைக் கண்டார்கள்; அவருடைய, உடலை வைத்த விதத்தைப் பார்த்துவிட்டு, திரும்பிப்போய் நறுமணப் பொருள்களையும் நறுமணத் தைலத்தையும் ஆயத்தம் செய்தார்கள். கட்டளைப்படி, அவர்கள் ஓய்வுநாளில் ஓய்ந்திருந்தார்கள்.

கிறிஸ்து தம்மையே தாழ்த்திக்கொண்டார்; எனவே கடவுளும் கிறிஸ்துவை உயர்த்தினார்.

கடவுள் வடிவில் விளங்கிய கிறிஸ்து, கடவுளுக்கு இணையாய் இருக்கும் நிலையை வலிந்து பற்றிக்கொண்டிருக்க வேண்டியதொன்றாகக் கருதவில்லை. ஆனால் தம்மையே வெறுமையாக்கி, அடிமையின் வடிவை ஏற்று, மனிதருக்கு ஒப்பானார். மனித உருவில் தோன்றி, சாவை ஏற்கும் அளவுக்கு, அதுவும் சிலுவைச் சாவையே ஏற்கும் அளவுக்குக் கீழ்ப்படிந்து தம்மையே தாழ்த்திக்கொண்டார்.

  N. When the hour came, Jesus took his place at table, and the apostles with him. And he said to them,

  ✠ I have longed to eat this passover with you before I suffer; because, I tell you, I shall not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.

  N. Then, taking a cup, he gave thanks and said,

  ✠ Take this and share it among you, because from now on, I tell you, I shall not drink wine until the kingdom of God comes.

  N. Then he took some bread, and when he had given thanks, broke it and gave it to them, saying,

  ✠ This is my body which will be given for you; do this as a memorial of me.

  N. He did the same with the cup after supper, and said,

  ✠ This cup is the new covenant in my blood which will be poured out for you.

  And yet, here with me on the table is the hand of the man who betrays me. The Son of Man does indeed go to his fate even as it has been decreed, but alas for that man by whom he is betrayed!

  N. And they began to ask one another which of them it could be who was to do this thing.

  A dispute arose also between them about which should be reckoned the greatest, but he said to them,

  ✠ Among pagans it is the kings who lord it over them, and those who have authority over them are given the title Benefactor. This must not happen with you. No; the greatest among you must behave as if he were the youngest, the leader as if he were the one who serves. For who is the greater: the one at table or the one who serves? The one at table, surely? Yet here am I among you as one who serves!

  You are the men who have stood by me faithfully in my trials; and now I confer a kingdom on you, just as my Father conferred one on me: you will eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones to judge the twelve tribes of Israel.

  Simon, Simon! Satan, you must know, has got his wish to sift you all like wheat; but I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail, and once you have recovered, you in your turn must strengthen your brothers.

  N. He answered,

  O. Lord, I would be ready to go to prison with you, and to death.

  N. Jesus replied,

  ✠ I tell you, Peter, by the time the cock crows today you will have denied three times that you know me.

  N. He said to them,

  ✠ When I sent you out without purse or haversack or sandals, were you short of anything?

  N. They answered,

  C. No.

  N. He said to them,

  ✠ But now if you have a purse, take it; if you have a haversack, do the same; if you have no sword, sell your cloak and buy one, because I tell you these words of scripture have to be fulfilled in me: He let himself be taken for a criminal. Yes, what scripture says about me is even now reaching its fulfilment.

  N. They said,

  C. Lord, there are two swords here now.

  N. He said to them,

  ✠ That is enough!

  N. He then left to make his way as usual to the Mount of Olives, with the disciples following. When they reached the place he said to them,

  ✠ Pray not to be put to the test.

  N. Then he withdrew from them, about a stone’s throw away, and knelt down and prayed, saying,

✠ Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me. Nevertheless, let your will be done, not mine.

  N. Then an angel appeared to him, coming from heaven to give him strength. In his anguish he prayed even more earnestly, and his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood.

  When he rose from prayer he went to the disciples and found them sleeping for sheer grief. He said to them,

  ✠ Why are you asleep? Get up and pray not to be put to the test.

  N. He was still speaking when a number of men appeared, and at the head of them the man called Judas, one of the Twelve, who went up to Jesus to kiss him. Jesus said,

  ✠ Judas, are you betraying the son of Man with a kiss?

  N. His followers, seeing what was happening, said,

  C. Lord, shall we use our swords?

  N. And one of them struck out at the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. But at this Jesus spoke:

  ✠ Leave off! That will do!

  N. And touching the man’s ear he healed him.

  Then Jesus spoke to the chief priests and captains of the Temple guard and elders who had come for him. He said,

  ✠ Am I a brigand, that you had to set out with swords and clubs? When I was among you in the Temple day after day you never moved to lay hands on me. But this is your hour; this is the reign of darkness.

  N. They seized him then and led him away, and they took him to the high priest’s house. Peter followed at a distance. They had lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and Peter sat down among them, and as he was sitting there by the blaze a servant-girl saw him, peered at him, and said,

  O. This person was with him too.

  N. But he denied it.

  O. Woman, I do not know him.

  N. Shortly afterwards someone else saw him and said,

  O. You are another of them.

  N. But Peter replied,

  O. I am not, my friend.

  N. About an hour later another man insisted, saying,

  O. This fellow was certainly with him. Why, he is a Galilean.

  N. Peter said,

  O. My friend, I do not know what you are talking about.

  N. At that instant, while he was still speaking, the cock crew, and the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered what the Lord had said to him, ‘Before the cock crows today, you will have disowned me three times.’ And he went outside and wept bitterly.

  Meanwhile the men who guarded Jesus were mocking and beating him. They blindfolded him and questioned him, saying,

  C. Play the prophet. Who hit you then?

  N. And they continued heaping insults on him.

  When day broke there was a meeting of the elders of the people, attended by the chief priests and scribes. He was brought before their council, and they said to him,

  C. If you are the Christ, tell us.

  N. He replied,

  ✠ If I tell you, you will not believe me, and if I question you, you will not answer. But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the Power of God.

  N. Then they all said,

  C. So you are the Son of God then?

  N. He answered:

  ✠ It is you who say I am.

  N. They said,

  C. What need of witnesses have we now? We have heard it for ourselves from his own lips.

  N. The whole assembly then rose, and they brought him before Pilate.

  They began their accusation by saying,

  C. We found this man inciting our people to revolt, opposing payment of the tribute to Caesar, and claiming to be Christ, a king.

  N. Pilate put to him this question:

  O. Are you the king of the Jews?

  N. He replied,

  ✠ It is you who say it.

  N. Pilate then said to the chief priests and the crowd,

  O. I find no case against this man.

  N. But they persisted,

  C. He is inflaming the people with his teaching all over Judaea; it has come all the way from Galilee, where he started, down to here.

  N. When Pilate heard this, he asked if the man were a Galilean; and finding that he came under Herod’s jurisdiction he passed him over to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.

  Herod was delighted to see Jesus; he had heard about him and had been wanting for a long time to set eyes on him; moreover, he was hoping to see some miracle worked by him. So he questioned him at some length; but without getting any reply. Meanwhile the chief priests and the scribes were there, violently pressing their accusations. Then Herod, together with his guards, treated him with contempt and made fun of him; he put a rich cloak on him and sent him back to Pilate. And though Herod and Pilate had been enemies before, they were reconciled that same day.

  Pilate then summoned the chief priests and the leading men and the people. He said,

  O. You brought this man before me as a political agitator. Now I have gone into the matter myself in your presence and found no case against the man in respect of all the charges you bring against him. Nor has Herod either, since he has sent him back to us. As you can see, the man has done nothing that deserves death, So I shall have him flogged and then let him go.

  N. But as one man they howled,

  C. Away with him! Give us Barabbas!

  N. (This man had been thrown into prison for causing a riot in the city and for murder.)

  Pilate was anxious to set Jesus free and addressed them again, but they shouted back,

  C. Crucify him! Crucify him!

  N. And for the third time he spoke to them,

  O. Why? What harm has this man done? I have found no case against him that deserves death, so I shall have him punished and then let him go.

  N. But they kept on shouting at the top of their voices, demanding that he should be crucified. And their shouts were growing louder.

Pilate then gave his verdict: their demand was to be granted. He released the man they asked for, who had been imprisoned for rioting and murder, and handed Jesus over to them to deal with as they pleased.

  As they were leading him away they seized on a man, Simon from Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and made him shoulder the cross and carry it behind Jesus. Large numbers of people followed him, and of women too, who mourned and lamented for him. But Jesus turned to them and said,

  ✠ Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep rather for yourselves and for your children. For the days will surely come when people will say, ‘Happy are those who are barren, the wombs that have never borne, the breasts that have never suckled!’ Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us!’; to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ For if men use the green wood like this, what will happen when it is dry?

  N. Now with him they were also leading out two other criminals to be executed.

  When they reached the place called The Skull, they crucified him there and the two criminals also, one on the right, the other on the left. Jesus said,

  ✠ Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing.

  When the centurion saw what had taken place, he gave praise to God and said,

  All his friends stood at a distance; so also did the women who had accompanied him from Galilee, and they saw all this happen.

  Then a member of the council arrived, an upright and virtuous man named Joseph. He had not consented to what the others had planned and carried out. He came from Arimathaea, a Jewish town, and he lived in the hope of seeing the kingdom of God. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. He then took it down, wrapped it in a shroud and put him in a tomb which was hewn in stone in which no one had yet been laid. It was Preparation Day and the sabbath was imminent.

Meanwhile the women who had come from Galilee with Jesus were following behind. They took note of the tomb and of the position of the body.

  Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. And on the sabbath day they rested, as the Law required.

His state was divine,

Jesus was to die to gather together the scattered children of God

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 11:45-56

Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary and had seen what Jesus did believed in him, but some of them went to tell the Pharisees what Jesus had done. Then the chief priests and Pharisees called a meeting. ‘Here is this man working all these signs’ they said ‘and what action are we taking? If we let him go on in this way everybody will believe in him, and the Romans will come and destroy the Holy Place and our nation.’ One of them, Caiaphas, the high priest that year, said, ‘You do not seem to have grasped the situation at all; you fail to see that it is better for one man to die for the people, than for the whole nation to be destroyed.’ He did not speak in his own person, it was as high priest that he made this prophecy that Jesus was to die for the nation – and not for the nation only, but to gather together in unity the scattered children of God. From that day they were determined to kill him. So Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but left the district for a town called Ephraim, in the country bordering on the desert, and stayed there with his disciples.

  The Jewish Passover drew near, and many of the country people who had gone up to Jerusalem to purify themselves looked out for Jesus, saying to one another as they stood about in the Temple, ‘What do you think? Will he come to the festival or not?’

A reading from the book of the Prophet Ezekiel 37: 21-28 

The Lord says this: ‘I am going to take the sons of Israel from the nations where they have gone. I shall gather them together from everywhere and bring them home to their own soil. I shall make them into one nation in my own land and on the mountains of Israel, and one king is to be king of them all; they will no longer form two nations, nor be two separate kingdoms. They will no longer defile themselves with their idols and their filthy practices and all their sins. I shall rescue them from all the betrayals they have been guilty of; I shall cleanse them; they shall be my people and I will be their God. My servant David will reign over them, one shepherd for all; they will follow my observances, respect my laws and practise them. They will live in the land that I gave my servant Jacob, the land in which your ancestors lived. They will live in it, they, their children, their children’s children, for ever. மரியாவிடம் வந்திருந்த யூதர் பலர் இயேசு செய்ததைக் கண்டு அவரை நம்பினர். ஆனால் அவர்களுள் சிலர் பரிசேயரிடம் சென்று இயேசு செய்ததைத் தெரிவித்தனர். தலைமைக் குருக்களும் பரிசேயரும் தலைமைச் சங்கத்தைக் கூட்டி, “இந்த ஆள் பல அரும் அடையாளங்களைச் செய்துகொண்டிருக்கிறானே, என்ன செய்யலாம்? இவனை இப்படியே விட்டு விட்டால் அனைவரும் இவனிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொள்வர். அப்போது உரோமையர் வந்து நம் தூய இடத்தையும் நம் இனத்தையும் அழித்துவிடுவார்களே!” என்று பேசிக்கொண்டனர். கயபா என்பவர் அவர்களுள் ஒருவர். அவர் அவ்வாண்டின் தலைமைக் குருவாய் இருந்தார். அவர் அவர்களிடம், “உங்களுக்கு ஒன்றும் தெரியவில்லை. இனம் முழுவதும் அழிந்து போவதைவிட ஒரு மனிதன் மட்டும் மக்களுக்காக இறப்பது நல்லது என்பதை நீங்கள் உணரவில்லை” என்று சொன்னார்.

இதை அவர் தாமாகச் சொல்லவில்லை. அவர் அவ்வாண்டின் தலைமைக் குருவாய் இருந்ததால், இயேசு தம் இனத்திற்காகவும், தம் இனத்திற்காக மட்டுமன்றி, சிதறி வாழ்ந்த கடவுளின் பிள்ளைகளை ஒன்றாய்ச் சேர்க்கும் நோக்குடன் அவர்களுக்காகவும் இறக்கப்போகிறார் என்று இறைவாக்காகச் சொன்னார். ஆகவே, அன்றிலிருந்தே அவர்கள் இயேசுவைக் கொன்றுவிடத் திட்டம் தீட்டினார்கள்.

அது முதல் இயேசு யூதரிடையே வெளிப்படையாக நடமாடவில்லை. அவர் அவ்விடத்தினின்று அகன்று பாலை நிலத்திற்கு அருகிலுள்ள பகுதிக்குப் போனார்; அங்கு எப்ராயிம் என்னும் ஊரில் தம் சீடருடன் தங்கியிருந்தார்.

யூதர்களுடைய பாஸ்கா விழா அண்மையில் நிகழ இருந்தது. விழாவுக்கு முன் தங்கள் தூய்மைச் சடங்குகளை நிறைவேற்றப் பலர் நாட்டுப் புறங்களிலிருந்து எருசலேமுக்குச் சென்றனர். அங்கே அவர்கள் இயேசுவைத் தேடினார்கள். “அவர் திருவிழாவுக்கு வரவேமாட்டாரா? நீங்கள் என்ன நினைக்கிறீர்கள்?” என்று கோவிலில் நின்று கொண்டிருந்தவர்கள் தங்களிடையே பேசிக்கொண்டார்கள். ஏனெனில் தலைமைக் குருக்களும் பரிசேயர்களும் இயேசுவைப் பிடிக்க எண்ணி அவர் இருக்கும் இடம் யாருக்காவது தெரிந்தால் தங்களிடம் வந்து அறிவிக்க வேண்டும் என்று கட்டளையிட்டிருந்தார்கள்.

இயேசு அவர்களைப் பார்த்து, “ ‘நீங்கள் தெய்வங்கள் என நான் கூறினேன்’ என்று உங்கள் மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ளது அல்லவா? கடவுளுடைய வார்த்தையைப் பெற்றுக்கொண்டவர்களே தெய்வங்கள் என்று சொல்லப்படுகிறார்கள். மறைநூல் வாக்கு என்றும் அழியாது. அப்படியானால் தந்தையால் அர்ப்பணிக்கப்பட்டு அவரால் உலகுக்கு அனுப்பப்பட்ட நான் என்னை ‘இறைமகன்’ என்று சொல்லிக் கொண்டதற்காக ‘இறைவனைப் பழித்துரைக்கிறாய்’ என நீங்கள் எப்படிச் சொல்லலாம்? நான் என் தந்தைக்குரிய செயல்களைச் செய்யவில்லை என்றால் நீங்கள் என்னை நம்பவேண்டாம். ஆனால் நான் அவற்றைச் செய்தால், என்னை நம்பாவிடினும் என் செயல்களையாவது நம்புங்கள்; அதன்மூலம் தந்தை என்னுள்ளும் நான் அவருள்ளும் இருப்பதை அறிந்துணர்வீர்கள்” என்றார். இதைக் கேட்டு அவர்கள் அவரை மீண்டும் பிடிக்க முயன்றார்கள். ஆனால் அவர்கள் கையில் அகப்படாமல் அவர் அங்கிருந்து சென்றார். யோர்தானுக்கு அப்பால் யோவான் முதலில் திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுத்துவந்த இடத்திற்கு இயேசு மீண்டும் சென்று அங்குத் தங்கினார். பலர் அவரிடம் வந்தனர். அவர்கள், “யோவான் அரும் அடையாளம் எதையும் செய்யவில்லை; ஆனால் அவர் இவரைப்பற்றிச் சொன்னதெல்லாம் உண்மையாயிற்று” எனப் பேசிக்கொண்டனர். அங்கே பலர் அவரிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொண்டனர்.
