அனைத்தையும் விட்டுவிட்டு, சீடர்கள் இயேசுவைப் பின்பற்றினார்கள்.

✠ லூக்கா எழுதிய நற்செய்தியிலிருந்து வாசகம் 5: 1-11

ஒரு நாள் இயேசு கெனசரேத்து ஏரிக்கரையில் நின்றுகொண்டிருந்தார். திரளான மக்கள் இறைவார்த்தையைக் கேட்பதற்கு அவரை நெருக்கிக்கொண்டிருந்தனர். அப்போது ஏரிக்கரையில் இரண்டு படகுகள் நிற்கக் கண்டார். மீனவர் படகை விட்டு இறங்கி, வலைகளை அலசிக் கொண்டிருந்தனர். அப்படகுகளுள் ஒன்று சீமோனுடையது. அதில் இயேசு ஏறினார். அவர் கரையிலிருந்து அதைச் சற்றே தள்ளும்படி அவரிடம் கேட்டுக்கொண்டு படகில் அமர்ந்தவாறே மக்கள் கூட்டத்துக்குக் கற்பித்தார்.

அவர் பேசி முடித்த பின்பு சீமோனை நோக்கி, “ஆழத்திற்குத் தள்ளிக் கொண்டுபோய், மீன் பிடிக்க உங்கள் வலைகளைப் போடுங்கள்” என்றார். சீமோன் மறுமொழியாக, “ஐயா, இரவு முழுவதும் நாங்கள் பாடுபட்டு உழைத்தும் ஒன்றும் கிடைக்கவில்லை; ஆயினும் உமது சொற்படியே வலைகளைப் போடுகிறேன்” என்றார். அப்படியே அவர்கள் செய்து பெருந்திரளான மீன்களைப் பிடித்தார்கள். வலைகள் கிழியத் தொடங்கவே, மற்றப் படகிலிருந்த தங்கள் கூட்டாளிகளுக்குச் சைகை காட்டித் துணைக்கு வருமாறு அழைத்தார்கள். அவர்களும் வந்து இரு படகுகளையும் மீன்களால் நிரப்பினார்கள். அவை மூழ்கும் நிலையில் இருந்தன.

இதைக் கண்ட சீமோன் பேதுரு, இயேசுவின் கால்களில் விழுந்து, “ஆண்டவரே, நான் பாவி, நீர் என்னை விட்டுப் போய்விடும்” என்றார். அவரும் அவரோடு இருந்த அனைவரும் மிகுதியான மீன்பாட்டைக் கண்டு திகைப்புற்றனர். சீமோனுடைய பங்காளிகளான செபதேயுவின் மக்கள் யாக்கோபும் யோவானும் அவ்வாறே திகைத்தார்கள். இயேசு சீமோனை நோக்கி, “அஞ்சாதே; இது முதல் நீ மனிதரைப் பிடிப்பவன் ஆவாய்” என்று சொன்னார்.

அவர்கள் தங்கள் படகுகளைக் கரையில் கொண்டுபோய்ச் சேர்த்தபின் அனைத்தையும் விட்டுவிட்டு அவரைப் பின்பற்றினார்கள்.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

உங்களுக்கு நான் அறிவித்த நற்செய்தியை நினைவுறுத்த விழைகிறேன். அதை நீங்களும் ஏற்றுக்கொண்டீர்கள்; அதிலே நிலைத்தும் நிற்கிறீர்கள். நான் உங்களுக்கு அறிவித்த நற்செய்தியை நீங்கள் உறுதியாகப் பற்றிக்கொண்டிருந்தால் அதன் வழியாக மீட்பு அடைவீர்கள்; இல்லையேல் நீங்கள் கொண்டிருக்கும் நம்பிக்கை பொருளற்றதே.

நான் பெற்றுக்கொண்டதும் முதன்மையானது எனக் கருதி உங்களிடம் ஒப்படைத்ததும் இதுவே: மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ளவாறு கிறிஸ்து நம் பாவங்களுக்காக இறந்து, அடக்கம் செய்யப்பட்டார். மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ளவாறே மூன்றாம் நாள் உயிருடன் எழுப்பப்பட்டார். பின்னர் அவர் கேபாவுக்கும் அதன்பின் பன்னிருவருக்கும் தோன்றினார். பின்பு ஐந்நூற்றுக்கும் மேற்பட்ட சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளுக்கு ஒரே நேரத்தில் தோன்றினார். அவர்களுள் பலர் இன்னமும் உயிரோடு இருக்கின்றனர்; சிலர் இறந்துவிட்டனர். பிறகு யாக்கோபுக்கும் அதன்பின் திருத்தூதர் அனைவருக்கும் தோன்றினார். எல்லாருக்கும் கடைசியில் காலம் தப்பிப் பிறந்த குழந்தை போன்ற எனக்கும் தோன்றினார்.

நான் திருத்தூதர்களிடையே மிகக் கடையவன். திருத்தூதர் என அழைக்கப் பெறத் தகுதியற்றவன். ஏனெனில் கடவுளின் திருச்சபையைத் துன்புறுத்தினேன். ஆனால் இப்போது நான் இந்த நிலையில் இருப்பது கடவுளின் அருளால்தான். அவர் எனக்களித்த அருள் வீணாகிவிடவில்லை. திருத்தூதர்கள் எல்லாரையும்விட நான் மிகுதியாகப் பாடுபட்டு உழைத்தேன். உண்மையில் நானாக உழைக்கவில்லை; என்னோடு இருக்கும் கடவுளின் அருளே அவ்வாறு உழைக்கச் செய்தது.

நானோ மற்றத் திருத்தூதர்களோ யாராய் இருந்தாலும் இதையே பறைசாற்றுகிறோம். நீங்களும் இதையே நம்பினீர்கள்.

அப்பொழுது நான்: “ஐயோ, நான் அழிந்தேன். ஏனெனில் தூய்மையற்ற உதடுகளைக் கொண்ட மனிதன் நான்; தூய்மையற்ற உதடுகள் கொண்ட மக்கள் நடுவில் வாழ்பவன் நான்; படைகளின் ஆண்டவராகிய அரசரை என் கண்கள் கண்டனவே” என்றேன்.

அப்பொழுது சேராபீன்களுள் ஒருவர் பலி பீடத்திலிருந்து நெருப்புப் பொறி ஒன்றைக் குறட்டால் எடுத்து அதைத் தம் கையில் வைத்துக்கொண்டு என்னை நோக்கிப் பறந்து வந்தார். அதனால் என் வாயைத் தொட்டு, “இதோ, இந்நெருப்புப்பொறி உன் உதடுகளைத் தொட்டது. உன் குற்றப்பழி உன்னை விட்டு அகன்றது; உன் பாவம் மன்னிக்கப்பட்டது” என்றார்.

மேலும் “யாரை நான் அனுப்புவேன்? நமது பணிக்காக யார் போவார்?” என வினவும் என் தலைவரின் குரலை நான் கேட்டேன். அதற்கு, “இதோ நானிருக்கிறேன். அடியேனை அனுப்பும்” என்றேன்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 5: 1-11 

Jesus was standing one day by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the crowd pressing round him listening to the word of God, when he caught sight of two boats close to the bank. The fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats – it was Simon’s – and asked him to put out a little from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat.

  When he had finished speaking he said to Simon, ‘Put out into deep water and pay out your nets for a catch.’ ‘Master,’ Simon replied, ‘we worked hard all night long and caught nothing, but if you say so, I will pay out the nets.’ And when they had done this they netted such a huge number of fish that their nets began to tear, so they signalled to their companions in the other boat to come and help them; when these came, they filled the two boats to sinking point.

  When Simon Peter saw this he fell at the knees of Jesus saying, ‘Leave me, Lord; I am a sinful man.’ For he and all his companions were completely overcome by the catch they had made; so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were Simon’s partners. But Jesus said to Simon, ‘Do not be afraid; from now on it is men you will catch.’ Then, bringing their boats back to land, they left everything and followed him.

A Reading from the First Letter of St.Paul to the Corinthians 15: 1-11.

Brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, the gospel that you received and in which you are firmly established; because the gospel will save you only if you keep believing exactly what I preached to you – believing anything else will not lead to anything.

  Well then, in the first place, I taught you what I had been taught myself, namely that Christ died for our sins, in accordance with the scriptures; that he was buried; and that he was raised to life on the third day, in accordance with the scriptures; that he appeared first to Cephas and secondly to the Twelve. Next he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died; then he appeared to James, and then to all the apostles; and last of all he appeared to me too; it was as though I was born when no one expected it.

  I am the least of the apostles; in fact, since I persecuted the Church of God, I hardly deserve the name apostle; but by God’s grace that is what I am, and the grace that he gave me has not been fruitless. On the contrary, I, or rather the grace of God that is with me, have worked harder than any of the others; but what matters is that I preach what they preach, and this is what you all believed.

In the year of King Uzziah’s death I saw the Lord of Hosts seated on 

a high throne; his train filled the sanctuary; above him stood seraphs, each one with six wings.

  And they cried out to one another in this way,

‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Hosts.

His glory fills the whole earth.’

The foundations of the threshold shook with the voice of the one who cried out, and the Temple was filled with smoke. I said:

‘What a wretched state I am in! I am lost,

for I am a man of unclean lips

and I live among a people of unclean lips,

and my eyes have looked at the King, the Lord of Hosts.’

Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding in his hand a live coal which he had taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. With this he touched my mouth and said:

your iniquity is purged.’

அக்காலத்தில் திருத்தூதர்கள் இயேசுவிடம் வந்து கூடித் தாங்கள் செய்தவை, கற்பித்தவை எல்லாம் அவருக்குத் தெரிவித்தார்கள். அவர் அவர்களிடம், ``நீங்கள் பாலை நிலத்திலுள்ள தனிமையான ஓர் இடத்திற்குச் சென்று சற்று ஓய்வெடுங்கள்'' என்றார். ஏனெனில் பலர் வருவதும் போவதுமாய் இருந்ததால், உண்பதற்குக்கூட அவர்களுக்கு நேரம் கிடைக்கவில்லை. அவ்வாறே அவர்கள் படகேறிப் பாலைநிலத்தில் உள்ள தனிமையான ஓர் இடத்திற்குச் சென்றார்கள். அவர்கள் புறப்பட்டுப் போவதை மக்கள் பார்த்தார்கள். பலர் அவர்களை இன்னாரென்று தெரிந்துகொண்டு, எல்லா நகர்களிலிருந்தும் கால்நடையாகவே கூட்டமாய் ஓடி, அவர்களுக்கு முன் அங்கு வந்து சேர்ந்தனர். அவர் கரையில் இறங்கியபோது பெருந்திரளான மக்களைக் கண்டார். அவர்கள் ஆயரில்லா ஆடுகளைப்போல் இருந்ததால் அவர்கள்மீது பரிவு கொண்டு, அவர்களுக்குப் பலவற்றைக் கற்பித்தார்.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

இயேசு வழியாக எப்போதும் நாம் கடவுளுக்குப் புகழ்ச்சிப் பலியைச் செலுத்துவோமாக. அவருடைய பெயரை அறிக்கையிடுவதன் வழியாக நம் உதடுகள் செலுத்தும் காணிக்கையே இப்புகழ்ச்சிப் பலியாகும். நன்மை செய்யவும் பகிர்ந்து வாழவும் மறவாதீர்கள். இவ்வகைப் பலிகளே கடவுளுக்கு உகந்தவை.

உங்கள் தலைவர்களுக்குக் கீழ்ப்படியுங்கள்; அவர்களுக்குப் பணிந்திருங்கள். அவர்கள் உங்களைப் பற்றிக் கணக்குக் கொடுக்க வேண்டியிருப்பதால் உங்கள் நலனில் விழிப்பாய் இருக்கிறார்கள். இப்பணி அவர்களுக்கு மகிழ்ச்சியுள்ளதாய் இருக்கும்படி நடந்து கொள்ளுங்கள். அவர்களுக்கு மனத்துயர் தராதீர்கள். அவர்களுடைய துயரம் உங்களுக்கு நலம் பயக்காது.

என்றுமுள்ள உடன்படிக்கையின் இரத்தத்தால், ஆடுகளின் பெரும் ஆயரான நம் ஆண்டவர் இயேசுவை இறந்தோரிடமிருந்து எழுப்பியவர் அமைதியை அருளும் கடவுளே. அவர் தம் திருவுளத்தை நீங்கள் நிறைவேற்றும்படி, எல்லா நன்மையும் செய்வதற்கு உங்களை ஆயத்தப்படுத்தி, இயேசு கிறிஸ்து வழியாகத் தமக்கு உகந்ததை நம்மில் செய்தருள்வாராக! இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவுக்கே என்றென்றும் மாட்சி உரித்தாகுக! ஆமென்.

The apostles rejoined Jesus and told him all they had done and taught. Then he said to them, ‘You must come away to some lonely place all by yourselves and rest for a while’; for there were so many coming and going that the apostles had no time even to eat. So they went off in a boat to a lonely place where they could be by themselves. May God turn us all into whatever is acceptable to himself through Jesus Christ

A reading from the letter to the Hebrews 13: 15-17, 20-21 

Through Christ, let us offer God an unending sacrifice of praise, a verbal sacrifice that is offered every time we acknowledge his name. Keep doing good works and sharing your resources, for these are sacrifices that please God.

  Obey your leaders and do as they tell you, because they must give an account of the way they look after your souls; make this a joy for them to do, and not a grief – you yourselves would be the losers. I pray that the God of peace, who brought our Lord Jesus back from the dead to become the great Shepherd of the sheep by the blood that sealed an eternal covenant, may make you ready to do his will in any kind of good action; and turn us all into whatever is acceptable to himself through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever, Amen.

King Herod had heard about Jesus, since by now his name was well known. Some were saying, ‘John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.’ Others said, ‘He is Elijah’; others again, ‘He is a prophet, like the prophets we used to have.’ But when Herod heard this he said, ‘It is John whose head I cut off; he has risen from the dead.’

  Now it was this same Herod who had sent to have John arrested, and had him chained up in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife whom he had married. For John had told Herod, ‘It is against the law for you to have your brother’s wife.’ As for Herodias, she was furious with him and wanted to kill him; but she was not able to, because Herod was afraid of John, knowing him to be a good and holy man, and gave him his protection. When he had heard him speak he was greatly perplexed, and yet he liked to listen to him.

  An opportunity came on Herod’s birthday when he gave a banquet for the nobles of his court, for his army officers and for the leading figures in Galilee. When the daughter of this same Herodias came in and danced, she delighted Herod and his guests; so the king said to the girl, ‘Ask me anything you like and I will give it you.’ And he swore her an oath, ‘I will give you anything you ask, even half my kingdom.’ She went out and said to her mother, ‘What shall I ask for?’ She replied, ‘The head of John the Baptist.’ The girl hurried straight back to the king and made her request, ‘I want you to give me John the Baptist’s head, here and now, on a dish.’ The king was deeply distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he was reluctant to break his word to her. So the king at once sent one of the bodyguard with orders to bring John’s head. The man went off and beheaded him in prison; then he brought the head on a dish and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. When John’s disciples heard about this, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

A reading from the letter to the Hebrews 13: 1-8 

Continue to love each other like brothers, and remember always to welcome strangers, for by doing this, some people have entertained angels without knowing it. Keep in mind those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; and those who are being badly treated, since you too are in the one body. Marriage is to be honoured by all, and marriages are to be kept undefiled, because fornicators and adulterers will come under God’s judgement. Put greed out of your lives and be content with whatever you have; God himself has said: I will not fail you or desert you, and so we can say with confidence: With the Lord to help me, I fear nothing: what can man do to me?

  Remember your leaders, who preached the word of God to you, and as you reflect on the outcome of their lives, imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same today as he was yesterday and as he will be for ever.

இதே ஏரோது, தன் சகோதரனான பிலிப்பின் மனைவி ஏரோதியாவை மனைவியாக்கிக் கொண்டிருந்தான்; அவள் பொருட்டு ஆள் அனுப்பி யோவானைப் பிடித்துக் கட்டிச் சிறையில் அடைத்திருந்தான். ஏனெனில் யோவான் ஏரோதிடம், “உம் சகோதரர் மனைவியை நீர் வைத்திருப்பது முறை அல்ல” எனச் சொல்லி வந்தார். அப்போது ஏரோதியா அவர்மீது காழ்ப்புணர்வு கொண்டு, அவரைக் கொலை செய்ய விரும்பினாள்; ஆனால் அவளால் இயலவில்லை. ஏனெனில் யோவான் நேர்மையும் தூய்மையும் உள்ளவர் என்பதை ஏரோது அறிந்து அஞ்சி அவருக்குப் பாதுகாப்பு அளித்துவந்தான். அவர் சொல்லைக் கேட்டுமிகக் குழப்பமுற்ற போதிலும், அவருக்கு மனமுவந்து செவிசாய்த்தான்.

ஒரு நாள் ஏரோதியாவுக்கு நல்ல வாய்ப்பு ஒன்று கிடைத்தது. ஏரோது தன் பிறந்த நாளில் அரசவையினருக்கும், ஆயிரத்தவர் தலைவர்களுக்கும் கலிலேய முதன்மைக் குடிமக்களுக்கும் ஒரு விருந்து படைத்தான். அப்போது ஏரோதியாவின் மகள் உள்ளே வந்து நடனமாடி ஏரோதையும் விருந்தினரையும் அகமகிழச் செய்தாள். அரசன் அச்சிறுமியிடம், “உனக்கு என்ன வேண்டுமானாலும் கேள், தருகிறேன்” என்றான். “நீ என்னிடம் எது கேட்டாலும், ஏன் என் அரசில் பாதியையே கேட்டாலும் உனக்குத் தருகிறேன்” என்றும் ஆணையிட்டுக் கூறினான். அவள் வெளியே சென்று, “நான் என்ன கேட்கலாம்?” என்று தன் தாயை வினவினாள். அவள், “திருமுழுக்கு யோவானின் தலையைக் கேள்” என்றாள்.

உடனே சிறுமி அரசனிடம் விரைந்து வந்து, “திருமுழுக்கு யோவானின் தலையை ஒரு தட்டில் வைத்து இப்போதே எனக்குக் கொடும்” என்று கேட்டாள். இதைக் கேட்ட அரசன் மிக வருந்தினான். ஆனாலும் விருந்தினர் முன் தான் ஆணையிட்டதால் அவளுக்கு அதை மறுக்க விரும்பவில்லை. உடனே அரசன் ஒரு காவலனை அனுப்பி யோவானுடைய தலையைக் கொண்டு வருமாறு பணித்தான். அவன் சென்று சிறையில் அவருடைய தலையை வெட்டி, அதை ஒரு தட்டில் கொண்டு வந்து அச்சிறுமியிடம் கொடுக்க, அவளும் அதைத் தன் தாயிடம் கொடுத்தாள். இதைக் கேள்வியுற்ற யோவானுடைய சீடர்கள் வந்து அவருடைய உடலை எடுத்துச் சென்று ஒரு கல்லறையில் வைத்தார்கள்.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

சகோதர அன்பில் நிலைத்திருங்கள். அன்னியரை வரவேற்று விருந்தோம்ப மறவாதீர்கள். இவ்வாறு விருந்தோம்பியதால் சிலர் தாங்கள் அறியாமலே வானதூதர்களை மகிழ்ச்சிப்படுத்தியதுண்டு. சிறைப் பட்டவர்களோடு நீங்களும் சிறைப்பட்டிருப்பதாக எண்ணி அவர்களை நினைத்துக் கொள்ளுங்கள். துன்புறக்கூடிய உடல் உங்களுக்கும் உள்ளதால், துன்புறுத்தப்படுபவர்களை மறவாதீர்கள். திருமணத்தை அனைவரும் உயர்வாக மதியுங்கள். மணவறைப் படுக்கை மாசுறாமல் இருக்கட்டும். காமுகரும் விபசாரத்தில் ஈடுபடுவோரும் கடவுளின் தீர்ப்புக்கு ஆளாவர். பொருளாசையை விலக்கி வாழுங்கள். உள்ளதே போதும் என்று இருங்கள். ஏனெனில், “நான் ஒருபோதும் உன்னைக் கைவிட மாட்டேன்! உன்னை விட்டு விலகமாட்டேன்” என்று கடவுளே கூறியிருக்கிறார். இதனால், நாம் துணி வோடு, “ஆண்டவரே எனக்குத் துணை, நான் அஞ்ச மாட்டேன்; மனிதர் எனக்கு எதிராக என்ன செய்ய முடியும்?” என்று கூறலாம்.

உங்களுக்குக் கடவுளின் வார்த்தையை எடுத்துச் சொன்ன உங்கள் தலைவர்களை நினைவுகூருங்கள். அவர்களது வாழ்வின் நிறைவை எண்ணிப் பார்த்து, நீங்களும் அவர்களைப்போல நம்பிக்கையுடையவர்களாய் இருங்கள். இயேசு கிறிஸ்து நேற்றும் இன்றும் என்றுமே மாறாதவர்.

மேலும் அவர், “நீங்கள் எங்கேயாவது ஒரு வீட்டுக்குள் சென்றால், அங்கிருந்து புறப்படும்வரை அவ்வீட்டிலேயே தங்கியிருங்கள். உங்களை எந்த ஊராவது ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளாமலோ உங்களுக்குச் செவிசாய்க்காமலோ போனால் அங்கிருந்து வெளியேறும்பொழுது, உங்கள் கால்களில் படிந்துள்ள தூசியை உதறிவிடுங்கள். இதுவே அவர்களுக்கு எதிரான சான்றாகும்” என்று அவர்களுக்குக் கூறினார்.

அப்படியே அவர்கள் புறப்பட்டுச் சென்று மக்கள் மனம் மாறவேண்டும் என்று பறைசாற்றினார்கள்; பல பேய்களை ஓட்டினார்கள்; உடல் நலமற்றோர் பலரை எண்ணெய் பூசிக் குணப்படுத்தினார்கள்.

Jesus made a tour round the villages, teaching. Then he summoned the Twelve and began to send them out in pairs giving them authority over the unclean spirits. And he instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff – no bread, no haversack, no coppers for their purses. They were to wear sandals but, he added, ‘Do not take a spare tunic.’ And he said to them, ‘If you enter a house anywhere, stay there until you leave the district. And if any place does not welcome you and people refuse to listen to you, as you walk away shake off the dust from under your feet as a sign to them.’ So they set off to preach repentance; and they cast out many devils, and anointed many sick people with oil and cured them.

You have come to Mount Zion and the city of the living God

A reading from the letter to the Hebrews 12: 18-19, 21-24 

What you have come to is nothing known to the senses: not a blazing fire, or a gloom turning to total darkness, or a storm; or trumpeting thunder or the great voice speaking which made everyone that heard it beg that no more should be said to them. The whole scene was so terrible that Moses said: I am afraid, and was trembling with fright. But what you have come to is Mount Zion and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem where the millions of angels have gathered for the festival, with the whole Church in which everyone is a ‘first-born son’ and a citizen of heaven. You have come to God himself, the supreme Judge, and been placed with spirits of the saints who have been made perfect; and to Jesus, the mediator who brings a new covenant and a blood for purification which pleads more insistently than Abel’s.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 6:1-6 

Jesus went to his home town and his disciples accompanied him. With the coming of the sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue and most of them were astonished when they heard him. They said, ‘Where did the man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been granted him, and these miracles that are worked through him? This is the carpenter, surely, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joset and Jude and Simon? His sisters, too, are they not here with us?’ And they would not accept him. And Jesus said to them, ‘A prophet is only despised in his own country, among his own relations and in his own house’; and he could work no miracle there, though he cured a few sick people by laying his hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.

God is training you as his sons

A reading from the letter to the Hebrews 12: 4-7,11-15 

In the fight against sin, you have not yet had to keep fighting to the point of death.

  Have you forgotten that encouraging text in which you are addressed as sons? My son, when the Lord corrects you, do not treat it lightly; but do not get discouraged when he reprimands you. For the Lord trains the ones that he loves and he punishes all those that he acknowledges as his sons. Suffering is part of your training; God is treating you as his sons. Has there ever been any son whose father did not train him? Of course, any punishment is most painful at the time, and far from pleasant; but later, in those on whom it has been used, it bears fruit in peace and goodness. So hold up your limp arms and steady your trembling knees and smooth out the path you tread; then the injured limb will not be wrenched, it will grow strong again.

  Always be wanting peace with all people, and the holiness without which no one can ever see the Lord. Be careful that no one is deprived of the grace of God and that no root of bitterness should begin to grow and make trouble; this can poison a whole community.

இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “சொந்த ஊரிலும் சுற்றத்திலும் தம் வீட்டிலும் தவிர மற்றெங்கும் இறைவாக்கினர் மதிப்புப் பெறுவர்” என்றார். அங்கே உடல் நலமற்றோர் சிலர்மேல் கைகளை வைத்துக் குணமாக்கியதைத் தவிர, வேறு வல்ல செயல் எதையும் அவரால் செய்ய இயலவில்லை. அவர்களது நம்பிக்கையின்மையைக் கண்டு அவர் வியப்புற்றார். அவர் சுற்றிலுமுள்ள ஊர்களுக்குச் சென்று கற்பித்து வந்தார்.

May God turn us all into whatever is acceptable to himself through Jesus Christ

A reading from the letter to the Hebrews 13: 15-17, 20-21 

Through Christ, let us offer God an unending sacrifice of praise, a verbal sacrifice that is offered every time we acknowledge his name. Keep doing good works and sharing your resources, for these are sacrifices that please God.

  Obey your leaders and do as they tell you, because they must give an account of the way they look after your souls; make this a joy for them to do, and not a grief – you yourselves would be the losers. I pray that the God of peace, who brought our Lord Jesus back from the dead to become the great Shepherd of the sheep by the blood that sealed an eternal covenant, may make you ready to do his will in any kind of good action; and turn us all into whatever is acceptable to himself through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever, Amen.

இயேசு வழியாக எப்போதும் நாம் கடவுளுக்குப் புகழ்ச்சிப் பலியைச் செலுத்துவோமாக. அவருடைய பெயரை அறிக்கையிடுவதன் வழியாக நம் உதடுகள் செலுத்தும் காணிக்கையே இப்புகழ்ச்சிப் பலியாகும். நன்மை செய்யவும் பகிர்ந்து வாழவும் மறவாதீர்கள். இவ்வகைப் பலிகளே கடவுளுக்கு உகந்தவை.

உங்கள் தலைவர்களுக்குக் கீழ்ப்படியுங்கள்; அவர்களுக்குப் பணிந்திருங்கள். அவர்கள் உங்களைப் பற்றிக் கணக்குக் கொடுக்க வேண்டியிருப்பதால் உங்கள் நலனில் விழிப்பாய் இருக்கிறார்கள். இப்பணி அவர்களுக்கு மகிழ்ச்சியுள்ளதாய் இருக்கும்படி நடந்து கொள்ளுங்கள். அவர்களுக்கு மனத்துயர் தராதீர்கள். அவர்களுடைய துயரம் உங்களுக்கு நலம் பயக்காது.

என்றுமுள்ள உடன்படிக்கையின் இரத்தத்தால், ஆடுகளின் பெரும் ஆயரான நம் ஆண்டவர் இயேசுவை இறந்தோரிடமிருந்து எழுப்பியவர் அமைதியை அருளும் கடவுளே. அவர் தம் திருவுளத்தை நீங்கள் நிறைவேற்றும்படி, எல்லா நன்மையும் செய்வதற்கு உங்களை ஆயத்தப்படுத்தி, இயேசு கிறிஸ்து வழியாகத் தமக்கு உகந்ததை நம்மில் செய்தருள்வாராக! இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவுக்கே என்றென்றும் மாட்சி உரித்தாகுக! ஆமென்.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசுவும் அவர் சீடரும் கடலுக்கு அக்கரையில் இருந்த கெரசேனர் பகுதிக்கு வந்தார்கள். இயேசு படகை விட்டு இறங்கிய உடனே தீய ஆவி பிடித்த ஒருவர் கல்லறைகளிலிருந்து அவருக்கு எதிரே வந்தார். கல்லறைகளே அம்மனிதரின் உறைவிடம். அவரை எவராலும் ஒருபொழுதும் சங்கிலியால் கூடக் கட்டிவைக்க முடியவில்லை. ஏனெனில், அவரைப் பல முறை விலங்குகளாலும் சங்கிலிகளாலும் கட்டியிருந்தும் அவர் சங்கிலிகளை உடைத்து விலங்குகளைத் தகர்த்து எறிந்தார். எவராலும் அவரை அடக்க இயலவில்லை. அவர் இரவு பகலாய் எந்நேரமும் கல்லறைகளிலும் மலைகளிலும் கூச்சலிட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்தார்; தம்மையே கற்களால் காயப்படுத்தி வந்தார்.

அவர் தொலையிலிருந்து இயேசுவைக் கண்டு, ஓடிவந்து அவரைப் பணிந்து, “இயேசுவே, உன்னத கடவுளின் மகனே, உமக்கு இங்கு என்ன வேலை? கடவுள் மேல் ஆணை! என்னை வதைக்க வேண்டாம்” என்று உரத்த குரலில் கத்தினார். ஏனெனில் இயேசு அவரிடம், “தீய ஆவியே, இந்த மனிதரை விட்டுப் போ” என்று சொல்லியிருந்தார். அவர் அம்மனிதரிடம், “உம் பெயர் என்ன?” என்று கேட்க அவர், “என் பெயர் ‘இலேகியோன்', ஏனெனில் நாங்கள் பலர்” என்று சொல்லி, அந்தப் பகுதியிலிருந்து தங்களை அனுப்பிவிட வேண்டாம் என்று அவரை வருந்தி வேண்டினார்.

அங்கே மலைப் பகுதியில் பன்றிகள் பெருங்கூட்டமாய் மேய்ந்து கொண்டிருந்தன. “நாங்கள் அப்பன்றிகளுக்குள் புகும்படி எங்களை அங்கே அனுப்பிவிடும்” என்று தீய ஆவிகள் அவரை வேண்டின. அவரும் அவற்றுக்கு அனுமதி கொடுத்தார். பின் தீய ஆவிகள் வெளியேறிப் பன்றிகளுக்குள் புகுந்தன. ஏறக்குறைய இரண்டாயிரம் பன்றிகள் அடங்கிய அந்தக் கூட்டம் செங்குத்துப் பாறையிலிருந்து கடலில் பாய்ந்து வீழ்ந்து மூழ்கியது.

பன்றிகளை மேய்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தவர்களோ ஓடிப்போய் நகரிலும் நாட்டுப்புறத்திலும் இதை அறிவித்தார்கள். நடந்தது என்னவென்று பார்க்க மக்கள் வந்தனர். அவர்கள் இயேசுவிடம் வந்தபோது, பேய் பிடித்திருந்தவர், அதாவது இலேகியோன் பிடித்திருந்த அவர், ஆடையணிந்து அறிவுத் தெளிவுடன் அமர்ந்திருப்பதைக் கண்டு அச்சமுற்றார்கள். நடந்ததைப் பார்த்தவர்கள் பேய் பிடித்தவருக்கும் பன்றிகளுக்கும் நேரிட்டதை அவர்களுக்கு எடுத்துரைத்தார்கள். அப்பொழுது அவர்கள் தங்கள் பகுதியை விட்டுப் போய்விடுமாறு இயேசுவை வேண்டிக்கொண்டார்கள்.

அவர் படகில் ஏறியதும் பேய் பிடித்திருந்தவர் தாமும் அவரோடுகூட இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று அவரை வேண்டிக்கொண்டார். ஆனால் அவர் அதற்கு இசையாமல், அவரைப் பார்த்து, “உமது வீட்டிற்குப் போய் ஆண்டவர் உம்மீது இரக்கம் கொண்டு உமக்குச் செய்ததையெல்லாம் உம் உறவினருக்கு அறிவியும்” என்றார். அவர் சென்று, இயேசு தமக்குச் செய்ததையெல்லாம் தெக்கப்பொலி நாட்டில் அறிவித்து வந்தார். அனைவரும் வியப்புற்றனர்.

இவர்கள் அனைவரும் தம் நம்பிக்கையினாலே நற்சான்று பெற்றார்கள். ஆயினும் கடவுள் வாக்களித்ததை அவர்கள் பெறவில்லை. ஏனெனில், நம்மோடு இணைந்துதான் அவர்கள் நிறைவுபெற முடியும் என்பதைக் கடவுள் கருத்தில் கொண்டு, நமக்காகச் சிறந்த திட்டம் ஒன்றை வகுத்திருந்தார்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 5:1-20 

Jesus and his disciples reached the country of the Gerasenes on the other side of the lake, and no sooner had Jesus left the boat than a man with an unclean spirit came out from the tombs towards him. The man lived in the tombs and no one could secure him any more, even with a chain; because he had often been secured with fetters and chains but had snapped the chains and broken the fetters, and no one had the strength to control him. All night and all day, among the tombs and in the mountains, he would howl and gash himself with stones. Catching sight of Jesus from a distance, he ran up and fell at his feet and shouted at the top of his voice, ‘What do you want with me, Jesus, son of the Most High God? Swear by God you will not torture me!’ – for Jesus had been saying to him, ‘Come out of the man, unclean spirit.’ ‘What is your name?’ Jesus asked. ‘My name is legion,’ he answered ‘for there are many of us.’ And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the district.

  Now there was there on the mountainside a great herd of pigs feeding, and the unclean spirits begged him, ‘Send us to the pigs, let us go into them.’ So he gave them leave. With that, the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs, and the herd of about two thousand pigs charged down the cliff into the lake, and there they were drowned. The swineherds ran off and told their story in the town and in the country round about; and the people came to see what had really happened. They came to Jesus and saw the demoniac sitting there, clothed and in his full senses – the very man who had had the legion in him before – and they were afraid. And those who had witnessed it reported what had happened to the demoniac and what had become of the pigs. Then they began to implore Jesus to leave the neighbourhood. As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed begged to be allowed to stay with him. Jesus would not let him but said to him, ‘Go home to your people and tell them all that the Lord in his mercy has done for you.’ So the man went off and proceeded to spread throughout the Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him. And everyone was amazed.

The example of the Old Testament saints

A reading from the letter to the Hebrews 11: 32-40 

Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets – these were men who through faith conquered kingdoms, did what is right and earned the promises. They could keep a lion’s mouth shut, put out blazing fires and emerge unscathed from battle. They were weak people who were given strength, to be brave in war and drive back foreign invaders. Some came back to their wives from the dead, by resurrection; and others submitted to torture, refusing release so that they would rise again to a better life. Some had to bear being pilloried and flogged, or even chained up in prison. They were stoned, or sawn in half, or beheaded; they were homeless, and dressed in the skins of sheep and goats; they were penniless and were given nothing but ill-treatment. They were too good for the world and they went out to live in deserts and mountains and in caves and ravines. These are all heroes of faith, but they did not receive what was promised, since God had made provision for us to have something better, and they were not to reach perfection except with us.

My eyes have seen your salvation

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 2: 22-40 

When the day came for them to be purified as laid down by the Law of Moses, the parents of Jesus took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, – observing what stands written in the Law of the Lord: Every first-born male must be consecrated to the Lord – and also to offer in sacrifice, in accordance with what is said in the Law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.

  Now in Jerusalem there was a man named Simeon. He was an upright and devout man; he looked forward to Israel’s comforting and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death until he had set eyes on the Christ of the Lord. Prompted by the Spirit he came to the Temple and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the Law required, he took him into his arms and blessed God; and he said:

‘Now, Master, you can let your servant go in peace,

just as you promised;

because my eyes have seen the salvation

which you have prepared for all the nations to see,

a light to enlighten the pagans

and the glory of your people Israel.’

As the child’s father and mother stood there wondering at the things that were being said about him, Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, ‘You see this child: he is destined for the fall and for the rising of many in Israel, destined to be a sign that is rejected – and a sword will pierce your own soul too – so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare.’

  There was a prophetess also, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was well on in years. Her days of girlhood over, she had been married for seven years before becoming a widow. She was now eighty-four years old and never left the Temple, serving God night and day with fasting and prayer. She came by just at that moment and began to praise God; and she spoke of the child to all who looked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem.

  When they had done everything the Law of the Lord required, they went back to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. Meanwhile the child grew to maturity, and he was filled with wisdom; and God’s favour was with him.

He took to himself descent from Abraham

A Reading from the Letter to the Hebrews 2:14-18 

Since all the children share the same blood and flesh, Christ too shared equally in it, so that by his death he could take away all the power of the devil, who had power over death, and set free all those who had been held in slavery all their lives by the fear of death. For it was not the angels that he took to himself; he took to himself descent from Abraham. It was essential that he should in this way become completely like his brothers so that he could be a compassionate and trustworthy high priest of God’s religion, able to atone for human sins. That is, because he has himself been through temptation he is able to help others who are tempted.
