உடனே அம்மனிதர் நலமடைந்தார்.

யூதர்களின் திருவிழா ஒன்று வந்தது. இயேசுவும் எருசலேமுக்குச் சென்றார். எருசலேமில் ஆட்டு வாயிலுக்கு அருகில் ஐந்து மண்டபங்கள் கொண்ட குளம் ஒன்று உண்டு. எபிரேய மொழியில் பெத்சதா என்பது அதன் பெயர். இம்மண்டபங்களில் உடல்நலமற்றோர், பார்வையற்றோர், கால் ஊனமுற்றோர், முடக்கு வாதமுற்றோர் ஆகியோர் திரளாய்ப்படுத்துக் கிடப்பர்.

முப்பத்தெட்டு ஆண்டுகளாய் உடல்நலமற்றிருந்த ஒருவரும் அங்கு இருந்தார். இயேசு அவரைக் கண்டு, நெடுங்காலமாக அவர் அந்நிலையில் இருந்துள்ளதை அறிந்து, “நலம்பெற விரும்புகிறீரா?” என்று அவரிடம் கேட்டார். “ஐயா, தண்ணீர் கலங்கும்போது என்னைக் குளத்தில் இறக்கிவிட ஆள் இல்லை. நான் போவதற்கு முன் வேறு ஒருவர் இறங்கிவிடுகிறார்” என்று உடல்நலமற்றவர் அவரிடம் கூறினார். இயேசு அவரிடம், “எழுந்து உம்முடைய படுக்கையை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு நடந்து செல்லும்” என்றார். உடனே அம்மனிதர் நலமடைந்து தம்முடைய படுக்கையை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு நடந்தார்.

அன்று ஓய்வுநாள். யூதர்கள் குணமடைந்தவரிடம், “ஓய்வுநாளாகிய இன்று படுக்கையை எடுத்துச் செல்வது சட்டத்திற்கு எதிரான செயல்” என்றார்கள். அவர் மறுமொழியாக, “என்னை நலமாக்கியவரே ‘உம்முடைய படுக்கையை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு நடந்து செல்லும்’ என்று என்னிடம் கூறினார்” என்றார். “ ‘படுக்கையை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு நடந்து செல்லும்’ என்று உம்மிடம் கூறியவர் யார்?” என்று அவர்கள் கேட்டார்கள். ஆனால் நலமடைந்தவருக்கு அவர் யாரெனத் தெரியவில்லை. ஏனெனில் அவ்விடத்தில் மக்கள் கூட்டமாய் இருந்ததால் இயேசு அங்கிருந்து நழுவிப் போய்விட்டார்.

பின்னர் இயேசு நலமடைந்தவரைக் கோவிலில் கண்டு, “இதோ பாரும், நீர் நலமடைந்துள்ளீர்; இதைவிடக் கேடானது எதுவும் உமக்கு நிகழாதிருக்க இனிப் பாவம் செய்யாதீர்” என்றார். அவர் போய், தம்மை நலமாக்கியவர் இயேசு என்று யூதர்களுக்கு அறிவித்தார். ஓய்வுநாளில் இயேசு இதைச் செய்ததால் யூதர்கள் அவரைத் துன்புறுத்தினார்கள்.

அம்மனிதர் கையில் ஓர் அளவு நூலைப் பிடித்துக்கொண்டு கிழக்கு நோக்கிச் சென்று, ஆயிர முழம் அளந்தார். பின்னர் கணுக்காலளவு ஆழமுள்ள அத்தண்ணீர் வழியாய் என்னை அழைத்துச் சென்றார். அவர் மேலும் ஆயிர முழம் அளந்து என்னை முழங்காலளவு ஆழமுள்ள தண்ணீரில் அழைத்துச் சென்றார். மேலும் ஆயிர முழம் அளந்து இடுப்பளவு தண்ணீரில் என்னை நடத்திச் சென்றார். அவர் மேலும் ஆயிர முழம் அளந்தார். ஆனால் இப்போது அது ஆறாக ஓடியது. எனவே என்னால் அதைக் கடக்க இயலவில்லை. ஏனெனில் தண்ணீர் உயர்ந்து நீந்திப் போகுமளவுக்கு ஆழமுடையதாய், யாராலும் நடந்து கடக்க முடியாத ஆறாய் ஓடியது. அவர் என்னிடம், ‘மானிடா! இதைப் பார்த்தாயா?’ என்றார். பின்னர் அவர் என்னை ஆற்றின் கரைக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்றார்.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 5: 1-3,5-16

There was a Jewish festival, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now at the Sheep Pool in Jerusalem there is a building, called Bethzatha in Hebrew, consisting of five porticos; and under these were crowds of sick people – blind, lame, paralysed – waiting for the water to move. One man there had an illness which had lasted thirty-eight years, and when Jesus saw him lying there and knew he had been in this condition for a long time, he said, ‘Do you want to be well again?’ ‘Sir,’ replied the sick man ‘I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is disturbed; and while I am still on the way, someone else gets there before me.’ Jesus said, ‘Get up, pick up your sleeping-mat and walk.’ The man was cured at once, and he picked up his mat and walked away.

  Now that day happened to be the sabbath, so the Jews said to the man who had been cured, ‘It is the sabbath; you are not allowed to carry your sleeping-mat.’ He replied, ‘But the man who cured me told me, “Pick up your mat and walk.”’ They asked, ‘Who is the man who said to you, “Pick up your mat and walk”?’ The man had no idea who it was, since Jesus had disappeared into the crowd that filled the place. After a while Jesus met him in the Temple and said, ‘Now you are well again, be sure not to sin any more, or something worse may happen to you.’ The man went back and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had cured him. It was because he did things like this on the sabbath that the Jews began to persecute Jesus.

A reading from the book of the Prophet Ezekiel 47: 1-9,12

The angel brought me to the entrance of the Temple, where a stream came out from under the Temple threshold and flowed eastwards, since the Temple faced east. The water flowed from under the right side of the Temple, south of the altar. He took me out by the north gate and led me right round outside as far as the outer east gate where the water flowed out on the right-hand side. The man went to the east holding his measuring line and measured off a thousand cubits; he then made me wade across the stream; the water reached my ankles. He measured off another thousand and made me wade across the stream again; the water reached my knees. He measured off another thousand and made me wade across again; the water reached my waist. He measured off another thousand; it was now a river which I could not cross; the stream had swollen and was now deep water, a river impossible to cross. He then said, ‘Do you see, son of man?’ He took me further, then brought me back to the bank of the river. When I got back, there were many trees on each bank of the river. He said, ‘This water flows east down to the Arabah and to the sea; and flowing into the sea it makes its waters wholesome. Wherever the river flows, all living creatures teeming in it will live. Fish will be very plentiful, for wherever the water goes it brings health, and life teems wherever the river flows. Along the river, on either bank, will grow every kind of fruit tree with leaves that never wither and fruit that never fails; they will bear new fruit every month, because this water comes from the sanctuary. And their fruit will be good to eat and the leaves medicinal.’

இயேசு சமாரியாவிலிருந்து கலிலேயாவுக்குச் சென்றார். தம் சொந்த ஊரில் இறைவாக்கினருக்கு மதிப்பு இராது என்று அவரே கூறியிருந்தார். அவர் கலிலேயா வந்தபோது கலிலேயர் அவரை வரவேற்றனர். ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் திருவிழாவுக்குச் சென்றிருந்தபோது எருசலேமில் அவர் செய்தவை அனைத்தையும் கண்டிருந்தனர். கலிலேயாவில் உள்ள கானாவுக்கு இயேசு மீண்டும் சென்றார். அங்கேதான் அவர் தண்ணீரைத் திராட்சை இரசம் ஆக்கியிருந்தார். கப்பர்நாகுமில் அரச அலுவலரின் மகன் ஒருவன் நோயுற்றிருந்தான். இயேசு யூதேயாவிலிருந்து கலிலேயாவுக்கு வந்திருப்பதாகக் கேள்விப்பட்ட அரச அலுவலர் அவரிடம் சென்று, சாகும் தறுவாயிலிருந்த தம் மகனை நலமாக்க வருமாறு வேண்டினார். இயேசு அவரை நோக்கி, “அடையாளங்களையும் அருஞ்செயல்களையும் கண்டாலன்றி நீங்கள் நம்பவே மாட்டீர்கள்” என்றார். அரச அலுவலர் இயேசுவிடம், “ஐயா, என் மகன் இறக்குமுன் வாரும்” என்றார். இயேசு அவரிடம், “நீர் புறப் பட்டுப்போம். உம் மகன் பிழைத்துக்கொள்வான்” என்றார். அவரும் இயேசு தம்மிடம் சொன்ன வார்த்தையை நம்பிப் புறப்பட்டுப் போனார். அவர் போய்க்கொண்டிருக்கும்போதே அவருடைய பணியாளர்கள் அவருக்கு எதிர்கொண்டுவந்து மகன் பிழைத்துக்கொண்டான் என்று கூறினார்கள். “எத்தனை மணிக்கு நோய் நீங்கியது?” என்று அவர் அவர்களிடம் வினவ, அவர்கள், “நேற்றுப் பிற்பகல் ஒரு மணிக்குக் காய்ச்சல் நீங்கியது” என்றார்கள். ‘உம் மகன் பிழைத்துக்கொள்வான்’ என்று இயேசு அந்நேரத்தில்தான் கூறினார் என்பதை அவன் தந்தை நினைவுகூர்ந்தார். அவரும் அவர் வீட்டார் அனைவரும் இயேசுவை நம்பினர்.
இயேசு யூதேயாவிலிருந்து கலிலேயாவுக்கு வந்தபிறகு செய்த இரண்டாவது அரும் அடையாளம் இதுவே.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 4: 43-54 

Jesus left Samaria for Galilee. He himself had declared that there is no respect for a prophet in his own country, but on his arrival the Galileans received him well, having seen all that he had done at Jerusalem during the festival which they too had attended.

  He went again to Cana in Galilee, where he had changed the water into wine. Now there was a court official there whose son was ill at Capernaum and, hearing that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judaea, he went and asked him to come and cure his son as he was at the point of death. Jesus said, ‘So you will not believe unless you see signs and portents!’ ‘Sir,’ answered the official ‘come down before my child dies.’ ‘Go home,’ said Jesus ‘your son will live.’ The man believed what Jesus had said and started on his way; and while he was still on the journey back his servants met him with the news that his boy was alive. He asked them when the boy had begun to recover. ‘The fever left him yesterday’ they said ‘at the seventh hour.’ The father realised that this was exactly the time when Jesus had said, ‘Your son will live’; and he and all his household believed.

  This was the second sign given by Jesus, on his return from Judaea to Galilee.

அக்காலத்தில்

வரிதண்டுவோர், பாவிகள் யாவரும் இயேசு சொல்வதைக் கேட்க அவரிடம் நெருங்கி வந்தனர். பரிசேயரும், மறைநூல் அறிஞரும், ‘‘இவர் பாவிகளை வரவேற்று அவர்களோடு உணவருந்துகிறாரே” என்று முணுமுணுத்தனர். அப்போது அவர் அவர்களுக்கு இந்த உவமையைச் சொன்னார்:

‘‘ஒருவருக்கு இரண்டு புதல்வர்கள் இருந்தார்கள். அவர்களுள் இளையவர் தந்தையை நோக்கி, ‘அப்பா, சொத்தில் எனக்கு உரிய பங்கைத் தாரும்’ என்றார். அவர் சொத்தை அவர்களுக்குப் பகிர்ந்து அளித்தார். சில நாள்களுக்குள் இளைய மகன் எல்லாவற்றையும் திரட்டிக்கொண்டு, தொலைநாட்டிற்கு நெடும் பயணம் மேற்கொண்டார்; அங்குத் தாறுமாறாக வாழ்ந்து தம் சொத்தையும் பாழாக்கினார். அனைத்தையும் அவர் செலவழித்தார்.

பின்பு அந்த நாடு முழுவதும் கொடிய பஞ்சம் ஏற்பட்டது. அப்பொழுது அவர் வறுமையில் வாடினார்; எனவே அந்நாட்டுக் குடிமக்களுள் ஒருவரிடம் அண்டிப் பிழைக்கச் சென்றார். அவர் அவரைப் பன்றி மேய்க்கத் தம் வயல்களுக்கு அனுப்பினார். அவர் பன்றிகள் தின்னும் நெற்றுகளால் தம் வயிற்றை நிரப்ப விரும்பினார்; ஆனால் அதைக்கூட அவருக்குக் கொடுப்பார் இல்லை.

அவர் அறிவு தெளிந்தவராய், ‘என் தந்தையின் கூலியாள்களுக்குத் தேவைக்கு மிகுதியான உணவு இருக்க, நான் இங்குப் பசியால் சாகிறேனே! நான் புறப்பட்டு என் தந்தையிடம் போய், அப்பா, கடவுளுக்கும் உமக்கும் எதிராக நான் பாவம் செய்தேன்; இனிமேல் நான் உம்முடைய மகன் எனப்படத் தகுதியற்றவன்; உம்முடைய கூலியாள்களுள் ஒருவனாக என்னை வைத்துக்கொள்ளும் என்பேன்’ என்று சொல்லிக் கொண்டார். உடனே அவர் புறப்பட்டுத் தம் தந்தையிடம் வந்தார்.

தொலையில் வந்துகொண்டிருந்தபோதே அவர் தந்தை அவரைக் கண்டு, பரிவு கொண்டு, ஓடிப்போய் அவரைக் கட்டித் தழுவி முத்தமிட்டார். மகனோ அவரிடம், ‘அப்பா, கடவுளுக்கும் உமக்கும் எதிராக நான் பாவம் செய்தேன்; இனிமேல் நான் உம்முடைய மகன் எனப்படத் தகுதியற்றவன்’ என்றார்.

தந்தை தம் பணியாளரை நோக்கி, ‘முதல் தரமான ஆடையைக் கொண்டு வந்து இவனுக்கு உடுத்துங்கள்; இவனுடைய கைக்கு மோதிரமும், காலுக்கு மிதியடியும் அணிவியுங்கள்; கொழுத்த கன்றைக் கொண்டு வந்து அடியுங்கள்; நாம் மகிழ்ந்து விருந்து கொண்டாடுவோம். ஏனெனில் என் மகன் இவன் இறந்துபோயிருந்தான்; மீண்டும் உயிர்பெற்று வந்துள்ளான். காணாமற் போயிருந்தான்; மீண்டும் கிடைத்துள்ளான்’ என்றார். அவர்கள் மகிழ்ந்து விருந்து கொண்டாடத் தொடங்கினார்கள்.

அப்போது மூத்த மகன் வயலில் இருந்தார். அவர் திரும்பி வீட்டை நெருங்கி வந்துகொண்டிருந்தபோது, ஆடல் பாடல்களைக் கேட்டு, ஊழியர்களுள் ஒருவரை வரவழைத்து, ‘இதெல்லாம் என்ன?’ என்று வினவினார். அதற்கு ஊழியர் அவரிடம், ‘உம் தம்பி வந்திருக்கிறார். அவர் தம்மிடம் நலமாகத் திரும்பி வந்திருப்பதால் உம் தந்தை கொழுத்த கன்றை அடித்திருக்கிறார்’ என்றார். அவர் சினமுற்று உள்ளே போக விருப்பம் இல்லாதிருந்தார். உடனே அவருடைய தந்தை வெளியே வந்து, அவரை உள்ளே வருமாறு கெஞ்சிக் கேட்டார். அதற்கு அவர் தந்தையிடம், ‘பாரும், இத்தனை ஆண்டுகளாக நான் அடிமைபோன்று உமக்கு வேலை செய்து வருகிறேன். உம் கட்டளைகளை ஒருபோதும் மீறியதில்லை. ஆயினும், என் நண்பரோடு நான் மகிழ்ந்து கொண்டாட ஓர் ஆட்டுக் குட்டியைக்கூட என்றுமே நீர் தந்ததில்லை. ஆனால் விலைமகளிரோடு சேர்ந்து உம் சொத்துக்களை எல்லாம் அழித்துவிட்ட இந்த உம் மகன் திரும்பி வந்தவுடனே, இவனுக்காகக் கொழுத்த கன்றை அடித்திருக்கிறீரே!’ என்றார்.

அதற்குத் தந்தை, ‘மகனே, நீ எப்போதும் என்னுடன் இருக்கிறாய்; என்னுடையதெல்லாம் உன்னுடையதே. இப்போது நாம் மகிழ்ந்து கொண்டாடி இன்புற வேண்டும். ஏனெனில் உன் தம்பி இவன் இறந்து போயிருந்தான்; மீண்டும் உயிர்பெற்றுள்ளான். காணாமற் போயிருந்தான்; மீண்டும் கிடைத்துள்ளான்’ என்றார்.”

ஆண்டவரின் அருள்வாக்கு.

இரண்டாம் வாசகம் கிறிஸ்துவின் வாயிலாக, கடவுள் நம்மைத் தம்மோடு ஒப்புரவாக்கினார். கொரிந்தியருக்கு எழுதிய இரண்டாம் நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் 5:17-21

கிறிஸ்துவின் வாயிலாக, கடவுள் நம்மைத் தம்மோடு ஒப்புரவாக்கினார்.

கொரிந்தியருக்கு எழுதிய இரண்டாம் நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் 5:17-21

சகோதர சகோதரிகளே, ஒருவர் கிறிஸ்துவோடு இணைந்திருக்கும்போது அவர் புதிதாகப் படைக்கப்பட்டவராய் இருக்கிறார். பழையன கழிந்து புதியன புகுந்தன அன்றோ! இவை யாவும் கடவுளின் செயலே. அவரே கிறிஸ்துவின் வாயிலாக நம்மைத் தம்மோடு ஒப்புரவாக்கினார்: ஒப்புரவாக்கும் திருப்பணியையும் நமக்குத் தந்துள்ளார். உலகினரின் குற்றங்களைப் பொருட்படுத்தாமல் கடவுள் கிறிஸ்துவின் வாயிலாக அவர்களைத் தம்மோடு ஒப்புரவாக்கினார். அந்த ஒப்புரவுச் செய்தியை எங்களிடம் ஒப்படைத்தார். எனவே நாங்கள் கிறிஸ்துவின் தூதுவர்களாய் இருக்கிறோம். கடவுளே எங்கள் வாயிலாக வேண்டுகோள் விடுக்கிறார். ஆகவே கடவுளோடு ஒப்புரவாகுங்கள் என்று கிறிஸ்துவின் சார்பில் நாங்கள் மன்றாடுகிறோம். நாம் கிறிஸ்து வழியாகத் தமக்கு ஏற்புடையவராகுமாறு கடவுள் பாவம் அறியாத அவரைப் பாவநிலை ஏற்கச் செய்தார்.

அந்நாள்களில்

ஆண்டவர் யோசுவாவிடம், ‘‘இன்று எகிப்தியரின் பழிச்சொல்லை உங்களிடமிருந்து நீக்கிவிட்டேன்” என்றார்.

இஸ்ரயேலர் கில்காலில் தங்கினர். மாதத்தின் பதினான்காம் நாள் மாலை எரிகோ சமவெளியில் பாஸ்கா கொண்டாடினர். பாஸ்காவின் மறுநாள் நிலத்தின் விளைச்சலையும் புளிப்பற்ற அப்பத்தையும் வறுத்த தானியத்தையும் உண்டனர்.

நிலத்தின் விளைச்சலை உண்ட மறுநாளிலிருந்து மன்னா நின்றது. இஸ்ரயேலருக்கு மன்னா மீண்டும் கிடைக்கவில்லை. கானான் நிலத்தின் விளைச்சலை அந்த ஆண்டு உண்டனர்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 15: 1-3,11-32 

The tax collectors and the sinners were all seeking the company of Jesus to hear what he had to say, and the Pharisees and the scribes complained. ‘This man’ they said ‘welcomes sinners and eats with them.’ So he spoke this parable to them:

  ‘A man had two sons. The younger said to his father, “Father, let me have the share of the estate that would come to me.” So the father divided the property between them. A few days later, the younger son got together everything he had and left for a distant country where he squandered his money on a life of debauchery.

  ‘When he had spent it all, that country experienced a severe famine, and now he began to feel the pinch, so he hired himself out to one of the local inhabitants who put him on his farm to feed the pigs. And he would willingly have filled his belly with the husks the pigs were eating but no one offered him anything. Then he came to his senses and said, “How many of my father’s paid servants have more food than they want, and here am I dying of hunger! I will leave this place and go to my father and say: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as one of your paid servants.” So he left the place and went back to his father.

  ‘While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with pity. He ran to the boy, clasped him in his arms and kissed him tenderly. Then his son said, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son.” But the father said to his servants, “Quick! Bring out the best robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the calf we have been fattening, and kill it; we are going to have a feast, a celebration, because this son of mine was dead and has come back to life; he was lost and is found.” And they began to celebrate.

  ‘Now the elder son was out in the fields, and on his way back, as he drew near the house, he could hear music and dancing. Calling one of the servants he asked what it was all about. “Your brother has come” replied the servant “and your father has killed the calf we had fattened because he has got him back safe and sound.” He was angry then and refused to go in, and his father came out to plead with him; but he answered his father, “Look, all these years I have slaved for you and never once disobeyed your orders, yet you never offered me so much as a kid for me to celebrate with my friends. But, for this son of yours, when he comes back after swallowing up your property – he and his women – you kill the calf we had been fattening.”

  ‘The father said, “My son, you are with me always and all I have is yours. But it was only right we should celebrate and rejoice, because your brother here was dead and has come to life; he was lost and is found.”’

God reconciled himself to us through Christ

A Reading from the Second Letter of St.Paul to the Corinthians 5: 17-21 

For anyone who is in Christ, there is a new creation; the old creation has gone, and now the new one is here. It is all God’s work. It was God who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the work of handing on this reconciliation. In other words, God in Christ was reconciling the world to himself, not holding men’s faults against them, and he has entrusted to us the news that they are reconciled. So we are ambassadors for Christ; it is as though God were appealing through us, and the appeal that we make in Christ’s name is: be reconciled to God. For our sake God made the sinless one into sin, so that in him we might become the goodness of God.

The Lord said to Joshua, ‘Today I have taken the shame of Egypt away from you.’

  The Israelites pitched their camp at Gilgal and kept the Passover there on the fourteenth day of the month, at evening in the plain of Jericho. On the morrow of the Passover they tasted the produce of that country, unleavened bread and roasted ears of corn, that same day. From that time, from their first eating of the produce of that country, the manna stopped falling. And having manna no longer, the Israelites fed from that year onwards on what the land of Canaan yielded.

Jesus spoke the following parable to some people who prided themselves on being virtuous and despised everyone else: ‘Two men went up to the Temple to pray, one a Pharisee, the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood there and said this prayer to himself, “I thank you, God, that I am not grasping, unjust, adulterous like the rest of mankind, and particularly that I am not like this tax collector here. அதற்கு மறைநூல் அறிஞர் அவரிடம், “நன்று போதகரே, ‘கடவுள் ஒருவரே; அவரைத் தவிர வேறு ஒரு கடவுள் இல்லை’ என்று நீர் கூறியது உண்மையே. அவரிடம் முழு இதயத்தோடும் முழு அறிவோடும் முழு ஆற்றலோடும் அன்பு செலுத்துவதும், தன்னிடம் அன்பு கொள்வதுபோல் அடுத்திருப்பவரிடம் அன்பு செலுத்துவதும் எரிபலிகளையும் வேறு பலிகளையும்விட மேலானது” என்று கூறினார்.

அவர் அறிவுத்திறனோடு பதிலளித்ததைக் கண்ட இயேசு அவரிடம், “நீர் இறையாட்சியினின்று தொலையில் இல்லை” என்றார். அதன்பின் எவரும் அவரிடம் எதையும் கேட்கத் துணியவில்லை.

Moses said to the people:

  ‘Now, Israel, take notice of the laws and customs that I teach you today, and observe them, that you may have life and may enter and take possession of the land that the Lord the God of your fathers is giving you.

  ‘See, as the Lord my God has commanded me, I teach you the laws and customs that you are to observe in the land you are to enter and make your own. Keep them, observe them, and they will demonstrate to the peoples your wisdom and understanding. When they come to know of all these laws they will exclaim, “No other people is as wise and prudent as this great nation.” And indeed, what great nation is there that has its gods so near as the Lord our God is to us whenever we call to him? And what great nation is there that has laws and customs to match this whole Law that I put before you today?

  ‘But take care what you do and be on your guard. Do not forget the things your eyes have seen, nor let them slip from your heart all the days of your life; rather, tell them to your children and to your children’s children.’

The angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the House of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. He went in and said to her, ‘Rejoice, so highly favoured! The Lord is with you.’ She was deeply disturbed by these words and asked herself what this greeting could mean, but the angel said to her, ‘Mary, do not be afraid; you have won God’s favour. Listen! You are to conceive and bear a son, and you must name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David; he will rule over the House of Jacob for ever and his reign will have no end.’ Mary said to the angel, ‘But how can this come about, since I am a virgin?’ ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you’ the angel answered ‘and the power of the Most High will cover you with its shadow. Bulls’ blood and goats’ blood are useless for taking away sins, and this is what Christ said, on coming into the world:

You who wanted no sacrifice or oblation,

prepared a body for me.

You took no pleasure in holocausts or sacrifices for sin;

then I said,

just as I was commanded in the scroll of the book,

‘God, here I am! I am coming to obey your will.’

Notice that he says first: You did not want what the Law lays down as the things to be offered, that is: the sacrifices, the oblations, the holocausts and the sacrifices for sin, and you took no pleasure in them; and then he says: Here I am! I am coming to obey your will. He is abolishing the first sort to replace it with the second. And this will was for us to be made holy by the offering of his body made once and for all by Jesus Christ.

The Lord spoke to Ahaz and said, ‘Ask the Lord your God for a sign for yourself coming either from the depths of Sheol or from the heights above.’ ‘No,’ Ahaz answered ‘I will not put the Lord to the test.’

  Then Isaiah said:

‘Listen now, House of David:

are you not satisfied with trying the patience of men

without trying the patience of my God, too?

The Lord himself, therefore,

will give you a sign.

It is this: the maiden is with child

ஆறாம் மாதத்தில் கபிரியேல் என்னும் வானதூதரைக் கடவுள் கலிலேயாவிலுள்ள நாசரேத்து என்னும் ஊரிலிருந்த ஒரு கன்னியிடம் அனுப்பினார். அவர் தாவீது குடும்பத்தினராகிய யோசேப்பு என்னும் பெயருடைய ஒருவருக்கு மண ஒப்பந்தமானவர். அவர் பெயர் மரியா.

வானதூதர் மரியாவுக்குத் தோன்றி, “அருள் நிறைந்தவரே வாழ்க! ஆண்டவர் உம்மோடு இருக்கிறார்” என்றார். இவ்வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்டு அவர் கலங்கி, இந்த வாழ்த்து எத்தகையதோ என்று எண்ணிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.

வானதூதர் அவரைப் பார்த்து, “மரியா, அஞ்சவேண்டாம்; கடவுளின் அருளைக் கண்டடைந்துள்ளீர். இதோ, கருவுற்று ஒரு மகனைப் பெறுவீர்; அவருக்கு இயேசு என்னும் பெயரிடுவீர். அவர் பெரியவராயிருப்பார்; உன்னத கடவுளின் மகன் எனப்படுவார். அவருடைய தந்தை தாவீதின் அரியணையை ஆண்டவராகிய கடவுள் அவருக்கு அளிப்பார். அவர் யாக்கோபின் குடும்பத்தின்மீது என்றென்றும் ஆட்சி செலுத்துவார். அவருடைய ஆட்சிக்கு முடிவே இராது” என்றார்.

அதற்கு மரியா வானதூதரிடம், “இது எப்படி நிகழும்? நான் கன்னி ஆயிற்றே!” என்றார்.

வானதூதர் அவரிடம், “தூய ஆவி உம்மீது வரும். உன்னத கடவுளின் வல்லமை உம்மேல் நிழலிடும். ஆதலால் உம்மிடம் பிறக்கப்போகும் குழந்தை தூயது. அக்குழந்தை இறைமகன் எனப்படும். உம் உறவினராகிய எலிசபெத்தும் தம் முதிர்ந்த வயதில் ஒரு மகனைக் கருத்தரித்திருக்கிறார். கருவுற இயலாதவர் என்று சொல்லப்பட்ட அவருக்கு இது ஆறாம் மாதம். ஏனெனில், கடவுளால் இயலாதது ஒன்றுமில்லை” என்றார்.

பின்னர் மரியா, “நான் ஆண்டவரின் அடிமை; உம் சொற்படியே எனக்கு நிகழட்டும்” என்றார். அப்பொழுது வானதூதர் அவரை விட்டு அகன்றார்.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

காளைகள், வெள்ளாட்டுக் கிடாய்கள் இவற்றின் இரத்தம் பாவங்களைப் போக்க முடியாது. அதனால்தான் கிறிஸ்து உலகிற்கு வந்தபோது, “பலியையும் காணிக்கையையும் நீர் விரும்பவில்லை, ஆனால் ஓர் உடலை எனக்கு அமைத்துத் தந்தீர். எரிபலிகளும் பாவம் போக்கும் பலிகளும் உமக்கு உகந்தவையல்ல. எனவே நான் கூறியது: என் கடவுளே, உமது திருவுளத்தை நிறைவேற்ற, ‘இதோ வருகின்றேன்.’ என்னைக் குறித்துத் திருநூல் சுருளில் எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளது” என்கிறார்.

திருச்சட்டப்படி செலுத்தப்பட்ட போதிலும், “நீர் பலிகளையும் காணிக்கைகளையும் எரிபலிகளையும் பாவம்போக்கும் பலிகளையும் விரும்பவில்லை; இவை உமக்கு உகந்தவையல்ல” என்று அவர் முதலில் கூறுகிறார். பின்னர் “உமது திருவுளத்தை நிறைவேற்ற, இதோ வருகின்றேன்” என்கிறார். பின்னையதை நிலைக்கச் செய்ய முன்னையதை நீக்கி விடுகிறார்.

இந்தத் திருவுளத்தால்தான் இயேசு கிறிஸ்து ஒரே ஒரு முறை தம் உடலைப் பலியாகச் செலுத்தியதன் மூலம் நாம் தூயவராக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறோம்.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 4: 24-30

Jesus came to Nazara and spoke to the people in the synagogue: ‘I tell you solemnly, no prophet is ever accepted in his own country.

  ‘There were many widows in Israel, I can assure you, in Elijah’s day, when heaven remained shut for three years and six months and a great famine raged throughout the land, but Elijah was not sent to any one of these: he was sent to a widow at Zarephath, a Sidonian town. And in the prophet Elisha’s time there were many lepers in Israel, but none of these was cured, except the Syrian, Naaman.’

  When they heard this everyone in the synagogue was enraged. They sprang to their feet and hustled him out of the town; and they took him up to the brow of the hill their town was built on, intending to throw him down the cliff, but he slipped through the crowd and walked away.

Naaman, army commander to the king of Aram, was a man who enjoyed his master’s respect and favour, since through him the Lord had granted victory to the Aramaeans. But the man was a leper.

  Now on one of their raids, the Aramaeans had carried off from the land of Israel a little girl who had become a servant of Naaman’s wife. She said to her mistress, ‘If only my master would approach the prophet of Samaria. He would cure him of his leprosy.’

  Naaman went and told his master. ‘This and this’ he reported ‘is what the girl from the land of Israel said.’

  ‘Go by all means,’ said the king of Aram ‘I will send a letter to the king of Israel.’

  So Naaman left, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold and ten festal robes. He presented the letter to the king of Israel. It read: ‘With this letter, I am sending my servant Naaman to you for you to cure him of his leprosy.’ When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his garments. ‘Am I a god to give death and life,’ he said ‘that he sends a man to me and asks me to cure him of his leprosy? Listen to this, and take note of it and see how he intends to pick a quarrel with me.’

  When Elisha heard that the king of Israel had torn his garments, he sent word to the king, ‘Why did you tear your garments? Let him come to me, and he will find there is a prophet in Israel.’

  So Naaman came with his team and chariot and drew up at the door of Elisha’s house. And Elisha sent him a messenger to say, ‘Go and bathe seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will become clean once more.’

  But Naaman was indignant and went off, saying, ‘Here was I thinking he would be sure to come out to me, and stand there, and call on the name of the Lord his God, and wave his hand over the spot and cure the leprous part. Surely Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, are better than any water in Israel? Could I not bathe in them and become clean?’ And he turned round and went off in a rage.

  But his servants approached him and said, ‘My father, if the prophet had asked you to do something difficult, would you not have done it? All the more reason, then, when he says to you, “Bathe, and you will become clean.”’

  So he went down and immersed himself seven times in the Jordan, as Elisha had told him to do. And his flesh became clean once more like the flesh of a little child.

  Returning to Elisha with his whole escort, he went in and stood before him. ‘Now I know’ he said ‘that there is no God in all the earth except in Israel.’

அந்நாள்களில்

சிரியா மன்னனின் படைத் தலைவனான நாமான் தம் தலைவனிடம் சிறப்பும் நன்மதிப்பும் பெற்றிருந்தார். ஏனெனில் அவர் மூலமாய் ஆண்டவர் சிரியாவுக்கு வெற்றி அளித்திருந்தார். அவர் வலிமைமிக்க வீரர்; ஆனால் தொழுநோயாளி. சிரியா நாட்டினர் ஒருமுறை கொள்ளையடிக்கச் சென்றபொழுது, இஸ்ரயேலைச் சார்ந்த ஒரு சிறுமியைக் கடத்திக்கொண்டு வந்திருந்தனர். அவள் நாமானின் மனைவிக்குப் பணிவிடை புரிந்து வந்தாள். அவள் தன் தலைவியை நோக்கி, “என் தலைவர் சமாரியாவில் இருக்கும் இறைவாக்கினர் முன்னிலையில் சென்றாரெனில், அவர் இவரது தொழுநோயைக் குணமாக்குவார்” என்றாள். எனவே நாமான் தம் தலைவனிடம் சென்று, “இஸ்ரயேல் நாட்டைச் சார்ந்த சிறுமி இன்னின்னவாறு கூறுகின்றாள்” என்று அவனுக்குத் தெரிவித்தார். அப்பொழுது சிரியா மன்னர், “சென்று வாரும். நான் இஸ்ரயேல் அரசனுக்கு மடல் தருகிறேன்” என்றார்.

கடவுளின் அடியவரான எலிசா இஸ்ரயேல் அரசன் இவ்வாறு தன் ஆடைகளைக் கிழித்துக்கொண்ட செய்தியைக் கேள்வியுற்று அவனிடம் ஆள் அனுப்பி, “நீர் ஏன் உம் ஆடைகளைக் கிழித்துக் கொண்டீர்? அவன் என்னிடம் வரட்டும். இஸ்ரயேலில் ஓர் இறைவாக்கினர் உள்ளார் என அவன் அறியட்டும்” என்று சொன்னார். அவ்வாறே நாமான் தம் குதிரைகளுடனும் தேருடனும் எலிசா வீட்டு வாயில்முன் வந்து நின்றார். எலிசா, “நீ போய் யோர்தானில் ஏழுமுறை மூழ்கினால், உன் உடல் நலம் பெறும்” என்று ஆள் அனுப்பிச் சொல்லச் சொன்னார். எனவே, நாமான் சினமுற்று வெளியேறினார். அப்பொழுது அவர், “அவர் என்னிடம் வந்து, என் அருகில் நின்று, தம் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரின் பெயரைக் கூவியழைத்து, தொழுநோய் கண்ட இடத்தின்மேல் தம் கையை அசைத்துக் குணப்படுத்துவாரென்று நான் எண்ணியிருந்தேன். அபானா, பர்பார் என்ற தமஸ்கு நதிகள் இஸ்ரயேலில் உள்ள ஆறுகள் அனைத்தையும்விட மேலானவை அல்லவா? அவற்றில் மூழ்கி நான் நலமடைய முடியாதா?” என்று கூறி ஆத்திரமாய்த் திரும்பிச் செல்லலானார்.

அப்பொழுது அவருடைய வேலைக்காரர்கள் அவரை அணுகி அவரிடம், “எம் தந்தையே! இறைவாக்கினர் இதைவிட அரிதான ஒன்றை உமக்குக் கூறி இருந்தால், நீர் அதைச் செய்திருப்பீர் அல்லவா? மாறாக, ‘மூழ்கி எழும்; நலமடைவீர்’ என்று அவர் கூறும்போது அதை நீர் செய்வதற்கென்ன?” என்றனர். எனவே நாமான் புறப்பட்டுச் சென்று கடவுளின் அடியவரது வாக்கிற்கிணங்க யோர்தானில் ஏழுமுறை மூழ்கியெழ, அவர் நலமடைந்தார். அவரது உடல் சிறு பிள்ளையின் உடலைப்போல் மாறினது.

பின்பு அவர் தம் பரிவாரம் அனைத்துடன் கடவுளின் அடியவரிடம் திரும்பி வந்து, “இஸ்ரயேலைத் தவிர வேறு எந்த நாட்டிலும் கடவுள் இல்லையென இப்போது உறுதியாக அறிந்துகொண்டேன். இதோ, உம் அடியான்! எனது அன்பளிப்பை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும்” என்றார்.
