FIRST READING
"Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and all your house"
A Reading from the book of Acts of the Apostles (16, 22-34)
In those days, in the city of Philippi, the crowd was unleashed against Paul and Silas. The magistrates ordered their clothes to be torn off and beaten. After having beaten them, they were thrown in prison, while instructing the jailer to watch them closely. To apply this order, he put them at the back of the prison, with their feet stuck in wooden blocks.
Towards the middle of the night, Paul and Silas were praying and singing the praises of God, and the other inmates were listening to them. Suddenly there was a violent earthquake, which shook the foundations of the prison: instantly all the doors opened, and the bonds of all the inmates came loose. The jailer, awakened from his sleep, saw that the prison doors were open; believing that the inmates had escaped, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself. But Paul began to shout in a loud voice, "Don't hurt yourself, we're all here." Having called for light, the jailer rushed forward and, trembling, threw himself at the feet of Paul and Silas. Then he took them outside and asked them, “What must I do to be saved, my lords? They answered him: “Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and all your house. They spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who lived in his house. At the same hour, in the middle of the night, the jailer took them away to wash their wounds. Immediately he received baptism with all his family. Then he brought Paul and Silas up to his house, he had the table prepared, and with all his house he allowed his joy to believe in God to overflow.
The Word of the Lord.
