FIRST READING

"They would leave all joyful at having been deemed worthy to undergo humiliations for the name of Jesus"

Reading from the book of Acts of the Apostles (5, 34-42)
In those days, as the Apostles were appearing before the Supreme Council, intervened a Pharisee named Gamaliel, doctor of the Law, who was honored by all the people. He ordered them out for a moment, then he said, “You Israelites, be careful what you do to these people. Some time ago, Theudas arose, pretending to be someone, and to whom about four hundred men rallied; it was suppressed, and all its supporters were routed and reduced to nothing. After him, at the time of the census, arose Judas the Galilean who dragged many people behind him. He too perished, and all his followers were scattered. Now, in the present circumstance, I'm telling you, don't bother with these people anymore, leave them. Indeed, if their resolution or their enterprise comes from men, it will fall. But if it's from God, you can't bring it down. So do not risk finding yourself at war with God. The members of the Council allowed themselves to be convinced; they then called the Apostles back and, after having them whipped, forbade them to speak in the name of Jesus, then they released them. As for them, leaving the Supreme Council, they left all joyful at having been deemed worthy to undergo humiliations for the name of Jesus. Every day, in the Temple and in their homes, they constantly taught and proclaimed the Good News: Christ is Jesus.
