A Reading From The Holy Gospel According To John (19, 25-34)
Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother's sister, Mary, wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. Jesus, seeing his mother, and near her the disciple whom he loved, said to his mother: “Woman, here is your son. "Then he said to the disciple," Here is your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her to his home. After that, knowing that everything now was finished for the Scriptures to be fulfilled to the end, Jesus said, “I am thirsty. There was a container full of a vinegar drink there. So they fixed a sponge filled with this vinegar to a branch of hyssop, and brought it to her mouth. When he had taken the vinegar, Jesus said, “It is finished. Then, tilting his head, he put the spirit back. Since it was Preparation day (i.e. Friday), the bodies should not be left on the cross during the Sabbath, especially since this Sabbath was the great day of the Passover. So the Jews asked Pilate to remove the bodies after breaking their legs. The soldiers therefore went and broke the legs of the first, then of the other man crucified with Jesus.
