FIRST READING
"I end up going completely blind"
A Reading from the book of Tobit (2, 9-14)
That night, on the feast of Pentecost, after having buried a dead man, I, Tobith, took a bath, then I entered the courtyard of my house and I lay down against the courtyard wall, his face uncovered from the heat. I did not notice that there were sparrows in the wall above me, and their droppings fell hot in my eyes and caused leucomas. I went to the doctors to be treated, but the more they applied their balms to me, the more this whitish veil prevented me from seeing, and I ended up becoming completely blind: I remained blind for four years. All my brothers felt sorry for me, and Ahikar provided for my needs for two years until he left for Elymaid. During this time, my wife Anna, to earn a living, was doing labor work, which she delivered to her bosses, and they paid her wages. Now, on the seventh of the month of Dystros, she finished a piece of cloth and sent it to her employers; they paid him all they owed him and, for a festive meal, they offered him a kid taken from his mother. When I got home, the kid began to bleat. I called my wife and said, "Where did this kid come from?" Wouldn't it have been stolen? Return it to its owners. Because we are not allowed to eat anything stolen! "She said to me:" But it is a gift that was given to me in addition to my salary! I refused to believe her, told her to return the animal to its owners, and I got mad at my wife for it. So she replied: "So what about your alms?" What about your good works? We can now see what they mean! "
