அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தாம் வளர்ந்த ஊராகிய நாசரேத்துக்கு வந்தார். தமது வழக்கத்தின்படி ஓய்வு நாளில் தொழுகைக்கூடத்திற்குச் சென்று வாசிக்க எழுந்தார். இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயாவின் சுருளேடு அவரிடம் கொடுக்கப்பட்டது. அவர் அதைப் பிரித்தபோது கண்ட பகுதியில் இவ்வாறு எழுதியிருந்தது:

“ஆண்டவருடைய ஆவி என்மேல் உளது; ஏனெனில், அவர் எனக்கு அருள்பொழிவு செய்துள்ளார். ஏழைகளுக்கு நற்செய்தியை அறிவிக்கவும் சிறைப்பட்டோர் விடுதலை அடைவர், பார்வையற்றோர் பார்வை பெறுவர் என முழக்கமிடவும் ஒடுக்கப்பட்டோரை விடுதலை செய்து அனுப்பவும் ஆண்டவர் அருள்தரும் ஆண்டினை முழக்கமிட்டு அறிவிக்கவும் அவர் என்னை அனுப்பியுள்ளார்.” பின்னர் அந்த ஏட்டைச் சுருட்டி ஏவலரிடம் கொடுத்து விட்டு அமர்ந்தார். தொழுகைக்கூடத்தில் இருந்தவர்களின் கண்கள் அனைத்தும் அவரையே உற்று நோக்கியிருந்தன.

அப்பொழுது அவர் அவர்களை நோக்கி, “நீங்கள் கேட்ட இந்த மறைநூல் வாக்கு இன்று நிறைவேறிற்று” என்றார். அவர் வாயிலிருந்து வந்த அருள்மொழிகளைக் கேட்டு வியப்புற்று, “இவர் யோசேப்பின் மகன் அல்லவா?” எனக் கூறி எல்லாரும் அவரைப் பாராட்டினர்.

அவர் அவர்களிடம், “நீங்கள் என்னிடம், ‘மருத்துவரே, உம்மையே நீர் குணமாக்கிக்கொள்ளும்’ என்னும் பழமொழியைச் சொல்லி, ‘கப்பர்நாகுமில் நீர் செய்ததாக நாங்கள் கேள்விப்பட்டவற்றை எல்லாம் உம் சொந்த ஊராகிய இவ்விடத்திலும் செய்யும்’ எனக் கண்டிப்பாய்க் கூறுவீர்கள்.

ஆனால் நான் உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன். இறைவாக்கினர் எவரும் தம் சொந்த ஊரில் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளப்படுவதில்லை. உண்மையாக நான் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்: எலியாவின் காலத்தில் மூன்றரை ஆண்டுகளாக வானம் பொய்த்தது; நாடெங்கும் பெரும் பஞ்சம் உண்டானது. அக்காலத்தில் இஸ்ரயேலரிடையே கைம்பெண்கள் பலர் இருந்தனர்; ஆயினும் அவர்களுள் எவரிடமும் எலியா அனுப்பப்படவில்லை; சீதோனைச் சேர்ந்த சாரிபாத்தில் வாழ்ந்த ஒரு கைம்பெண்ணிடமே அனுப்பப்பட்டார். மேலும், இறைவாக்கினர் எலிசாவின் காலத்தில் இஸ்ரயேலரிடையே தொழுநோயாளர்கள் பலர் இருந்தனர்; ஆயினும் அவர்களுள் எவருக்கும் நோய் நீங்கவில்லை. சிரியாவைச் சார்ந்த நாமானுக்கே நோய் நீங்கியது” என்றார்.

தொழுகைக்கூடத்தில் இருந்த யாவரும் இவற்றைக் கேட்டபோது, சீற்றங்கொண்டனர்; அவர்கள் எழுந்து, அவரை ஊருக்கு வெளியே துரத்தி, அவ்வூரில் அமைந்திருந்த மலை உச்சியிலிருந்து கீழே தள்ளிவிட இழுத்துச் சென்றனர். அவர் அவர்கள் நடுவே நடந்து சென்று அங்கிருந்து போய்விட்டார்.

இயேசு தாம் எருசலேமுக்குப் போய் மூப்பர்கள், தலைமைக் குருக்கள், மறைநூல் அறிஞர்கள் ஆகியோரால் பலவாறு துன்பப்படவும் கொலை செய்யப்படவும் மூன்றாம் நாள் உயிருடன் எழுப்பப்படவும் வேண்டும் என்பதைத் தம் சீடருக்கு அந்நேரம் முதல் எடுத்துரைக்கத் தொடங்கினார்.

பேதுரு அவரைத் தனியே அழைத்துக் கடிந்து கொண்டு, “ஆண்டவரே, இது வேண்டாம். இப்படி உமக்கு நடக்கவே கூடாது” என்றார். ஆனால் இயேசு பேதுருவைத் திரும்பிப் பார்த்து, “என் கண்முன் நில்லாதே சாத்தானே, நீ எனக்குத் தடையாய் இருக்கிறாய்; ஏனெனில் நீ கடவுளுக்கு ஏற்றவைபற்றி எண்ணாமல் மனிதருக்கு ஏற்றவை பற்றியே எண்ணுகிறாய்” என்றார்.

பின்பு இயேசு தம் சீடரைப் பார்த்து, “என்னைப் பின்பற்ற விரும்பும் எவரும் தன்னலம் துறந்து, தம் சிலுவையைத் தூக்கிக்கொண்டு என்னைப் பின்பற்றட்டும். ஏனெனில் தம் உயிரைக் காத்துக்கொள்ள விரும்பும் எவரும் அதை இழந்துவிடுவர். மாறாக, என் பொருட்டுத் தம்மையே அழித்துக் கொள்கிற எவரும் வாழ்வடைவார். மனிதர் உலகம் முழுவதையும் ஆதாயமாக்கிக்கொண்டாலும் தம் வாழ்வையே இழப்பாரெனில் அவருக்குக் கிடைக்கும் பயன் என்ன? அவர் தம் வாழ்வுக்கு ஈடாக எதைக் கொடுப்பார்?

மானிட மகன் தம் தந்தையின் மாட்சியோடு தம் வானதூதர்களுடன் வரப் போகிறார்; அப்பொழுது ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் அவரவர் செயலுக்கேற்பக் கைம்மாறு அளிப்பார்” என்றார்.

ஏரோது, தன் சகோதரனான பிலிப்பின் மனைவி ஏரோதியாவை மனைவியாக்கிக் கொண்டிருந்தான்; அவள் பொருட்டு ஆள் அனுப்பி யோவானைப் பிடித்துக் கட்டிச் சிறையில் அடைத்திருந்தான்.

ஏனெனில் யோவான் ஏரோதிடம், “உம் சகோதரர் மனைவியை நீர் வைத்திருப்பது முறை அல்ல” எனச் சொல்லி வந்தார். அப்போது ஏரோதியா அவர்மீது காழ்ப்புணர்வு கொண்டு, அவரைக் கொலை செய்ய விரும்பினாள்; ஆனால் அவளால் இயலவில்லை. ஏனெனில் யோவான் நேர்மையும் தூய்மையும் உள்ளவர் என்பதை ஏரோது அறிந்து அஞ்சி அவருக்குப் பாதுகாப்பு அளித்துவந்தான். அவர் சொல்லைக் கேட்டு மிகக் குழப்பமுற்ற போதிலும், அவருக்கு மனமுவந்து செவிசாய்த்தான்.

ஒரு நாள் ஏரோதியாவுக்கு நல்ல வாய்ப்பு ஒன்று கிடைத்தது. ஏரோது தன் பிறந்த நாளில் அரசவையினருக்கும், ஆயிரத்தவர் தலைவர்களுக்கும் கலிலேய முதன்மைக் குடிமக்களுக்கும் ஒரு விருந்து படைத்தான்.

அப்போது ஏரோதியாவின் மகள் உள்ளே வந்து நடனமாடி ஏரோதையும் விருந்தினரையும் அகமகிழச் செய்தாள். அரசன் அச்சிறுமியிடம், “உனக்கு என்ன வேண்டுமானாலும் கேள், தருகிறேன்” என்றான். “நீ என்னிடம் எது கேட்டாலும், ஏன் என் அரசில் பாதியையே கேட்டாலும் உனக்குத் தருகிறேன்” என்றும் ஆணையிட்டுக் கூறினான்.

அவள் வெளியே சென்று, “நான் என்ன கேட்கலாம்?” என்று தன் தாயை வினவினாள். அவள், “திருமுழுக்கு யோவானின் தலையைக் கேள்” என்றாள்.

உடனே சிறுமி அரசனிடம் விரைந்து வந்து, “திருமுழுக்கு யோவானின் தலையை ஒரு தட்டில் வைத்து இப்போதே எனக்குக் கொடும்” என்று கேட்டாள்.

இதைக் கேட்ட அரசன் மிக வருந்தினான். ஆனாலும் விருந்தினர் முன் தான் ஆணையிட்டதால் அவளுக்கு அதை மறுக்க விரும்பவில்லை. உடனே அரசன் ஒரு காவலனை அனுப்பி யோவானுடைய தலையைக் கொண்டு வருமாறு பணித்தான். அவன் சென்று சிறையில் அவருடைய தலையை வெட்டி, அதை ஒரு தட்டில் கொண்டு வந்து அச்சிறுமியிடம் கொடுக்க, அவளும் அதைத் தன் தாயிடம் கொடுத்தாள்.

இதைக் கேள்வியுற்ற யோவானுடைய சீடர்கள் வந்து அவருடைய உடலை எடுத்துச் சென்று ஒரு கல்லறையில் வைத்தார்கள்.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

நீங்கள் அழைக்கப்பட்ட நிலையை எண்ணிப் பாருங்கள். மனிதக் கணிப்பின்படி உங்களுள் ஞானிகள் எத்தனை பேர்? வலியோர் எத்தனை பேர்? உயர்குடிமக்கள் எத்தனை பேர்? ஆனால் கடவுள் ஞானிகளை வெட்கப்படுத்த, மடமை என உலகம் கருதுபவற்றைத் தேர்ந்துகொண்டார். அவ்வாறே, வலியோரை வெட்கப்படுத்த, வலுவற்றவை என உலகம் கருதுபவற்றைத் தேர்ந்துகொண்டார். உலகம் ஒரு பொருட்டாகக் கருதுபவற்றை அழித்துவிட அது தாழ்ந்ததாகக் கருதுபவற்றையும் இகழ்ந்து தள்ளுபவற்றையும் கடவுள் தேர்ந்தெடுத்தார். எவரும் கடவுள் முன் பெருமை பாராட்டாதபடி அவர் இப்படிச் செய்தார். அவரால்தான் நீங்கள் கிறிஸ்துவுடன் இணைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறீர்கள்.

கிறிஸ்துவே கடவுளிடமிருந்து நமக்கு வரும் ஞானம். அவரே நம்மை ஏற்புடைவராக்கித் தூயவராக்கி மீட்கின்றார். எனவே மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ளவாறு, “பெருமை பாராட்ட விரும்புகிறவர் ஆண்டவரைக் குறித்தே பெருமை பாராட்டட்டும்.”

At that time: Herod sent and seized John and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because he had married her. For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” And Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death. But she could not, for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he heard him gladly. But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. For when Herodias’s daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. And the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.” And he vowed to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.” And she went out and said to her mother, “For what should I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.” And she came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” And the king was exceedingly sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her. And immediately the king sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. He went and beheaded him in the prison and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard of it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

In those days: The word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Dress yourself for work; arise, and say to them everything that I command you. Do not be dismayed by them, lest I dismay you before them. And I, behold, I make you this day a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls, against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the land. They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you, for I am with you, declares the Lord, to deliver you.”
