அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு சிலுவையில் தொங்கிக் கொண்டிருந்ததை மக்கள் பார்த்துக்கொண்டு நின்றார்கள். ஆட்சியாளர்கள், “பிறரை விடுவித்தான்; இவன் கடவுளின் மெசியாவும், தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டவனுமானால் தன்னையே விடுவித்துக்கொள்ளட்டும்” என்று கேலி செய்தார்கள். படைவீரர் அவரிடம் வந்து புளித்த திராட்சை இரசத்தைக் கொடுத்து, “நீ யூதர்களின் அரசனானால் உன்னைக் காப்பாற்றிக்கொள்” என்று எள்ளி நகையாடினர். “இவன் யூதரின் அரசன்” என்று அவரது சிலுவையின் மேல் எழுதி வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது.

சிலுவையில் தொங்கிக்கொண்டிருந்த குற்றவாளிகளுள் ஒருவன், “நீ மெசியாதானே! உன்னையும் எங்களையும் காப்பாற்று” என்று அவரைப் பழித்துரைத்தான்.

ஆனால் மற்றவன் அவனைக் கடிந்துகொண்டு, “கடவுளுக்கு நீ அஞ்சுவதில்லையா? நீயும் அதே தீர்ப்புக்குத்தானே உள்ளாகி இருக்கிறாய். நாம் தண்டிக்கப்படுவது முறையே. நம் செயல்களுக்கேற்ற தண்டனையை நாம் பெறுகிறோம். இவர் ஒரு குற்றமும் செய்யவில்லையே!” என்று பதிலுரைத்தான்.

பின்பு அவன், “இயேசுவே, நீர் ஆட்சியுரிமை பெற்று வரும்போது என்னை நினைவிற்கொள்ளும்” என்றான்.

அதற்கு இயேசு அவனிடம், “நீர் இன்று என்னோடு பேரின்ப வீட்டில் இருப்பீர் என உறுதியாக உமக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்” என்றார்.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

தந்தையாம் கடவுளுக்கு நன்றி செலுத்துங்கள். அவர் இறைமக்களுக்கான ஒளிமயமான உரிமைப்பேற்றில் பங்கு பெற உங்களைத் தகுதியுள்ளவர்கள் ஆக்கியுள்ளார். அவரே இருளின் அதிகாரத்திலிருந்து நம்மை விடுவித்துத் தம் அன்பார்ந்த மகனின் ஆட்சிக்குட்படுத்தினார். அம்மகனால்தான் நாம் பாவமன்னிப்பாகிய மீட்பைப் பெறுகிறோம்.

அவர் கட்புலனாகாத கடவுளது சாயல்; படைப்பனைத்திலும் தலைப்பேறு. ஏனெனில் விண்ணிலுள்ளவை, மண்ணிலுள்ளவை, கட்புலனாகுபவை, கட்புலனாகாதவை, அரியணையில் அமர்வோர், தலைமை தாங்குவோர், ஆட்சியாளர், அதிகாரம் கொண்டோர் ஆகிய அனைவரும் அவரால் படைக்கப்பட்டனர். அனைத்தும் அவர் வழியாய் அவருக்காகப் படைக்கப்பட்டன. அனைத்துக்கும் முந்தியவர் அவரே; அனைத்தும் அவரோடு இணைந்து நிலைபெறுகின்றன.

திருச்சபையாகிய உடலுக்குத் தலையும் தொடக்கமும் அவரே. எல்லாவற்றுள்ளும் முதன்மை பெறுமாறு இறந்து உயிர்த்தெழுவோருள் அவர் தலைப்பேறு ஆனார். தம் முழு நிறைவும் அவருள் குடிகொள்ளக் கடவுள் திருவுளம் கொண்டார். சிலுவையில் இயேசு சிந்திய இரத்தத்தால் அமைதியை நிலைநாட்டவும் விண்ணிலுள்ளவை, மண்ணிலுள்ளவை அனைத்தையும் அவர் வழி தம்மோடு ஒப்புரவாக்கவும் கடவுள் திருவுளம் கொண்டார்.

The people stayed there before the cross watching Jesus. As for the leaders, they jeered at him. ‘He saved others,’ they said ‘let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.’ The soldiers mocked him too, and when they approached to offer vinegar they said, ‘If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.’ Above him there was an inscription: ‘This is the King of the Jews.’

  One of the criminals hanging there abused him. ‘Are you not the Christ?’ he said. ‘Save yourself and us as well.’ But the other spoke up and rebuked him. ‘Have you no fear of God at all?’ he said. ‘You got the same sentence as he did, but in our case we deserved it: we are paying for what we did. அதற்கு இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “இக்கால வாழ்வில் மக்கள் திருமணம் செய்து கொள்கின்றனர். ஆனால் வருங்கால வாழ்வைப் பெறத் தகுதி பெற்ற யாரும் இறந்து உயிர்த்தெழும்போது திருமணம் செய்து கொள்வதில்லை. இனி அவர்கள் சாகமுடியாது; அவர்கள் வானதூதரைப் போல் இருப்பார்கள். உயிர்த்தெழுந்த மக்களாய் இருப்பதால் அவர்கள் கடவுளின் மக்களே.

இறந்தோர் உயிருடன் எழுப்பப்படுவதைப் பற்றி மோசே முட்புதர் பற்றிய பகுதியில் எடுத்துக் கூறியிருக்கிறாரே, அங்கு அவர் ஆண்டவரை, ‘ஆபிரகாமின் கடவுள், ஈசாக்கின் கடவுள், யாக்கோபின் கடவுள்’ என்று கூறியிருக்கிறார். அவர் இறந்தோரின் கடவுள் அல்ல; மாறாக வாழ்வோரின் கடவுள். ஏனெனில் அவரைப் பொறுத்தமட்டில் அனைவரும் உயிருள்ளவர்களே” என்றார்.

அந்தியோக்கு மன்னன் மேற்கு மாநிலங்கள் வழியாகச் சென்றபோது, பாரசீக நாட்டு எலிமாய் நகர் பொன், வெள்ளிஆகியவற்றுக்குப் புகழ் பெற்றது என்று கேள்விப்பட்டான். அதன் கோவிலில் மிகுந்த செல்வம் இருந்தது என்றும் கிரேக்க நாட்டை முதன்முதல் ஆண்ட மாசிடோனிய மன்னரான பிலிப்பின் மகன் அலெக்சாண்டர் அங்கே விட்டுச் சென்றிருந்த பொற்கேடயங்களும் மார்புக் கவசங்களும் படைக்கலன்களும் அங்கு இருந்தன என்றும் அறிய வந்தான். எனவே அந்தியோக்கு புறப்பட்டு நகரைக் கைப்பற்றிக் கொள்ளையடிக்க முயன்றான்; ஆனால், முடியவில்லை; ஏனெனில் அந்த நகர மக்கள் அவனது திட்டத்தை அறிந்திருந்தார்கள். அவர்கள் அவனை எதிர்த்துப் போரிட்டார்கள். ஆகவே அவன் பின்வாங்கி, பெரும் ஏமாற்றத்துடன் அங்கிருந்து பாபிலோனுக்குத் தப்பிச் சென்றான்.

யூதேயா நாட்டை எதிர்த்துச் சென்றிருந்த அவனுடைய படைகள் முறியடிக்கப்பட்ட செய்தியை அவன் பாரசீகத்தில் இருந்தபோது தூதர் ஒருவர் அவனுக்கு அறிவித்தார்; “லீசியா வலிமை வாய்ந்த படையோடு முதலில் சென்று யூதர்கள் முன் புறமுதுகு காட்டி ஓடிவிட்டான்; முறியடிக்கப்பட்ட படைகளிடமிருந்து யூதர்கள் கொள்ளையடித்த படைக்கலன்கள், மிகுதியான பொருள்கள் ஆகியவற்றால் அவர்கள் வலிமைமிக்கவர்கள் ஆனார்கள்; எருசலேமில் இருந்த பலிபீடத்தின்மேல் அந்தியோக்கு செய்து வைத்திருந்த நடுங்க வைக்கும் தீட்டை அவர்கள் தகர்த்தெறிந்தார்கள்; திருஉறைவிடத்தைச் சுற்றிலும் முன்புபோல் உயர்ந்த மதில்கள் எழுப்பியுள்ளார்கள்; அவனுடைய நகராகிய பெத்சூரைச் சுற்றிலும் அவ்வாறே செய்திருக்கிறார்கள்” என்றும் எடுத்துரைத்தார்.

இச்செய்தியைக் கேட்ட மன்னன் அதிர்ச்சியடைந்து மிகவும் நடுங்கினான்; தான் திட்டமிட்ட வண்ணம் நடவாததால் துயரம் தாங்காது நோயுற்றுப் படுத்த படுக்கையானான்.

கடுந்துயரம் அவனை ஆட்கொண்டதால் அங்குப் பல நாள் கிடந்தான்; தான் விரைவில் சாகவிருந்ததை உணர்ந்தான். ஆகவே அவன் தன் நண்பர் எல்லாரையும் அழைத்து, “என் கண்களினின்று தூக்கம் அகன்றுவிட்டது; கவலையினால் என் உள்ளம் உடைந்து விட்டது. ‘எவ்வளவு துயரத்திற்கு ஆளானேன்! இப்போது எத்துணைப் பெரும் துயரக் கடலில் அமிழ்ந்துள்ளேன்! நான் ஆட்சியில் இருந்தபோது அன்பு செலுத்தி, அன்பு பெற்றேனே’ என்று எனக்குள் சொல்லிக் கொண்டேன். ஆனால் எருசலேமில் நான் புரிந்த தீமைகளை இப்போது நினைவுகூர்கிறேன்; அங்கு இருந்த பொன், வெள்ளிக் கலன்கள் அனைத்தையும் கவர்ந்து சென்றேன்; யூதேயாவில் குடியிருந்தவர்களைக் காரணமின்றி அழித்தொழிக்கும்படி கட்டளையிட்டேன். இதனால்தான் இந்தக் கேடுகள் எனக்கு வந்துற்றன என நான் அறிவேன். இப்போது அயல்நாட்டில் துயரமிகுதியால் அழிந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறேன்” என்று கூறினான்.

At that time: There came to Jesus some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection, and they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. Now there were seven brothers.

The first took a wife, and died without children. And the second and the third took her, and likewise all seven left no children and died. Afterwards the woman also died. In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife.” And Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage, for they cannot die any more, because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to him.” Then some of the scribes answered, “Teacher, you have spoken well.” For they no longer dared to ask him any question.

'I remember the wrong I did in Jerusalem'

A reading from the first book of Maccabees 6:1-13 

In those days: King Antiochus was going through the upper provinces when he heard that Elymais in Persia was a city famed for its wealth in silver and gold. Its temple was very rich, containing golden shields, breastplates, and weapons left there by Alexander son of Philip, the Macedonian king who first reigned over the Greeks. So he came and tried to take the city and plunder it, but he could not, because his plan became known to the men of the city and they withstood him in battle.

So he fled and in great grief departed from there to return to Babylon. Then someone came to him in Persia and reported that the armies that had gone into the land of Judah had been routed; that Lysias had gone first with a strong force, but was turned back before the Jews;

that the Jews had grown strong from the arms, supplies, and abundant spoils that they had taken from the armies they had cut down; that they had torn down the abomination that he had erected upon the altar in Jerusalem; and that they had surrounded the sanctuary with high walls as before and also Beth-zur, his city.

When the king heard this news, he was astounded and badly shaken. He took to his bed and became sick from grief, because things had not turned out for him as he had planned. He lay there for many days, because deep grief continually gripped him, and he concluded that he was dying. So he called all his friends and said to them, “Sleep departs from my eyes and I am downhearted with worry. I said to myself, ‘To what distress I have come! And into what a great flood I now am plunged! For I was kind and beloved in my power.’ But now I remember the evils I did in Jerusalem. I seized all her vessels of silver and gold; and I sent to destroy the inhabitants of Judah without good reason. I know that it is because of this that these evils have come upon me; and behold, I am perishing of deep grief in a strange land.”
