He is a slave no longer, but a dear brother in the Lord.

Philemon 7-20 

I am so delighted, and comforted, to know of your love; they tell me, brother, how you have put new heart into the saints.

  Now, although in Christ I can have no diffidence about telling you to do whatever is your duty, I am appealing to your love instead, reminding you that this is Paul writing, an old man now and, what is more, still a prisoner of Christ Jesus. I am appealing to you for a child of mine, whose father I became while wearing these chains: I mean Onesimus. He was of no use to you before, but he will be useful to you now, as he has been to me. I am sending him back to you, and with him – I could say – a part of my own self. I should have liked to keep him with me; he could have been a substitute for you, to help me while I am in the chains that the Good News has brought me. However, I did not want to do anything without your consent; it would have been forcing your act of kindness, which should be spontaneous. I know you have been deprived of Onesimus for a time, but it was only so that you could have him back for ever, not as a slave any more, but something much better than a slave, a dear brother; especially dear to me, but how much more to you, as a blood-brother as well as a brother in the Lord. So if all that we have in common means anything to you, welcome him as you would me; but if he has wronged you in any way or owes you anything, then let me pay for it. I am writing this in my own handwriting: I, Paul, shall pay it back – I will not add any mention of your own debt to me, which is yourself. Well then, brother, I am counting on you, in the Lord; put new heart into me, in Christ.

அக்காலத்தில்

இறையாட்சி எப்போது வரும் என்று பரிசேயர் இயேசுவிடம் கேட்டனர். அவர் மறுமொழியாக, “இறையாட்சி கண்களுக்குப் புலப்படும் முறையில் வராது. இதோ, இங்கே! அல்லது அதோ, அங்கே! எனச் சொல்ல முடியாது. ஏனெனில், இறையாட்சி உங்கள் நடுவேயே செயல்படுகிறது” என்றார்.

பின்பு அவர் சீடர்களை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: “ஒரு காலம் வரும்; அப்போது மானிட மகனுடைய நாள்களில் ஒன்றையாவது காண நீங்கள் ஆவலாய் இருப்பீர்கள். ஆனால் நீங்கள் காணமாட்டீர்கள். அவர்கள் உங்களிடம், ‘இதோ, இங்கே! அல்லது அதோ, அங்கே!’ என்பார்கள். ஆனால் நீங்கள் போக வேண்டாம்; அவர்களைப் பின்தொடரவும் வேண்டாம். வானத்தில் மின்னல் ஒரு பக்கத்திலிருந்து மறு பக்கம் வரைக்கும் பளீரென மின்னி ஒளிர்வது போல மானிட மகனும் தாம் வரும் நாளில் தோன்றுவார்.

அன்பிற்குரியவரே,

உம் அன்பைக் குறித்து நான் பெருமகிழ்வும் ஆறுதலும் கொள்கிறேன். ஆம், சகோதரரே, உம்மால் இறைமக்களின் உள்ளம் புத்துயிர் பெற்றுள்ளது.

எனவே, நீர் செய்ய வேண்டியதை உமக்குக் கட்டளையிட, கிறிஸ்தவ உறவில், எனக்கு முழு உரிமை உண்டு என்றாலும், அன்பின் பெயரால் வேண்டுகோள் விடுக்கவே விரும்புகிறேன். கிறிஸ்து இயேசுவின் தூதுவனாக, அவர் பொருட்டுக் கைதியாக இருக்கும் பவுலாகிய எனக்குச் சிறையிலிருந்தபோது பிள்ளையான ஒனேசிமுக்காக உம்மிடம் வேண்டுகிறேன்.

முன்பு உமக்குப் பயனற்றவனாக இருந்த அவன், இப்பொழுது எனக்கும் உமக்கும் பயனுள்ளவன். அவனை உம்மிடம் திரும்ப அனுப்புகிறேன். அவனை அனுப்புவது என் இதயத்தையே அனுப்புவது போலாகும். நற்செய்தியின் பொருட்டுச் சிறையுற்றிருக்கும் எனக்கு, உமது பெயரால் பணியாற்ற, அவனை என்னிடமே நிறுத்திக்கொள்ள விரும்பினேன். ஆனால் நீர் செய்யும் நன்மையைக் கட்டாயத்தினால் செய்யாமல், மனமாரச் செய்யவேண்டும் என்று நினைத்தே, உம்முடைய உடன்பாடின்றி எதையும் செய்ய நான் விரும்பவில்லை.

அவன் என்றும் உம்மோடு இருக்க உம்மை விட்டுச் சிறிது காலம் பிரிந்திருந்தான் போலும்! இனி அவனை நீர் அடிமையாக அல்ல, அடிமையை விட மேலானவனாக, அதாவது உம்முடைய அன்பார்ந்த சகோதரனாக ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும். அவன் என் தனிப்பட்ட அன்புக்கு உரியவன். அப்படியானால் மனிதன் என்னும் முறையிலும் ஆண்டவரைச் சார்ந்தவன் என்னும் முறையிலும் அவன் எத்துணை மேலாக உம் அன்புக்கு உரியவனாகிறான்! எனவே, நமக்குள்ள நட்புறவைக் கருதி, என்னை ஏற்றுக்கொள்வது போல் அவனையும் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும். அவன் உமக்கு ஏதாவது தீங்கு இழைத்திருந்தால் அல்லது கடன்பட்டிருந்தால் அது என் கணக்கில் இருக்கட்டும். ‘நானே அதற்கு ஈடு செய்வேன்’ எனப் பவுலாகிய நான் என் கைப்பட எழுதுகிறேன்.

No-one has come back to praise God, only this foreigner

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 17:11-19. 

On the way to Jerusalem Jesus travelled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered one of the villages, ten lepers came to meet him. They stood some way off and called to him, ‘Jesus! Master! Take pity on us.’ When he saw them he said, ‘Go and show yourselves to the priests.’ Now as they were going away they were cleansed. Finding himself cured, one of them turned back praising God at the top of his voice and threw himself at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. The man was a Samaritan. This made Jesus say, ‘Were not all ten made clean? The other nine, where are they? It seems that no one has come back to give praise to God, except this foreigner.’ And he said to the man, ‘Stand up and go on your way. Your faith has saved you.’
