FIRST READING 

God has raised up for Israel one of David's descendants, Jesus, as Saviour, 

A Reading from the book of Acts of the Apostles 13:13-25 

Paul and his companions went by sea from Paphos to Perga in Pamphylia where John left them to go back to Jerusalem.

The others carried on from Perga till they reached Antioch in Pisidia. Here they went to synagogue on the Sabbath and took their seats.

After the passages from the Law and the Prophets had been read, the presidents of the synagogue sent them a message, 'Brothers, if you would like to address some words of encouragement to the congregation, please do so.'

Paul stood up, raised his hand for silence and began to speak: 'Men of Israel, and fearers of God, listen!

The God of our nation Israel chose our ancestors and made our people great when they were living in Egypt, a land not their own; then by divine power he led them out

and for about forty years took care of them in the desert.

When he had destroyed seven nations in Canaan, he put them in possession of their land

for about four hundred and fifty years. After this he gave them judges, down to the prophet Samuel.

Then they demanded a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin. After forty years,

he deposed him and raised up David to be king, whom he attested in these words, "I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who will perform my entire will."

To keep his promise, God has raised up for Israel one of David's descendants, Jesus, as Saviour,

whose coming was heralded by John when he proclaimed a baptism of repentance for the whole people of Israel.

Before John ended his course he said, "I am not the one you imagine me to be; there is someone coming after me whose sandal I am not fit to undo."

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு உரத்த குரலில் கூறியது: “என்னிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொள்பவர் என்னிடம் மட்டும் அல்ல, என்னை அனுப்பியவரிடமே நம்பிக்கை கொள்கிறார். என்னைக் காண்பவரும் என்னை அனுப்பியவரையே காண்கிறார்.

என்னிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொள்பவர் இருளில் இராதபடி நான் ஒளியாக உலகிற்கு வந்தேன். நான் கூறும் வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்டும் அவற்றைக் கடைப்பிடியாதவருக்குத் தண்டனைத் தீர்ப்பு வழங்குபவன் நானல்ல. ஏனெனில் நான் உலகிற்குத் தீர்ப்பு வழங்க வரவில்லை; மாறாக அதை மீட்கவே வந்தேன்.

என்னைப் புறக்கணித்து நான் சொல்வதை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளாதவருக்குத் தீர்ப்பளிக்கும் ஒன்று உண்டு; என் வார்த்தையே அது. இறுதி நாளில் அவர்களுக்கு அது தண்டனைத் தீர்ப்பு அளிக்கும். ஏனெனில் நானாக எதையும் பேசவில்லை; என்னை அனுப்பிய தந்தையே நான் என்ன சொல்லவேண்டும், என்ன பேசவேண்டும் என்பதுபற்றி எனக்குக் கட்டளை கொடுத்துள்ளார். அவருடைய கட்டளை நிலைவாழ்வு தருகிறது என்பது எனக்குத் தெரியும். எனவே நான் சொல்பவற்றையெல்லாம் தந்தை என்னிடம் கூறியவாறே சொல்கிறேன்.”

அந்நாள்களில்

கடவுளின் வார்த்தை மேன்மேலும் பரவியது. பர்னபாவும் சவுலும் தங்கள் திருத்தொண்டை முடித்தபின், மாற்கு எனப்படும் யோவானைக் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு, எருசலேமிலிருந்து திரும்பிச் சென்றனர்.

அந்தியோக்கிய திருச்சபையில் பர்னபா, நீகர் எனப்படும் சிமியோன், சிரேன் ஊரானாகிய லூக்கியு, குறுநில மன்னன் ஏரோதுவுடன் வளர்ந்த மனாயீன், சவுல் ஆகியோர் இறைவாக்கினராகவும் போதகராகவும் இருந்தனர். அவர்கள் நோன்பிருந்து ஆண்டவரை வழிபடும்போது தூய ஆவியார் அவர்களிடம், “பர்னபாவையும் சவுலையும் ஒரு தனிப்பட்ட பணிக்கென நான் அழைத்திருக்கிறேன். அந்தப் பணிக்காக அவர்களை ஒதுக்கி வையுங்கள்” என்று கூறினார். அவர்கள் நோன்பிருந்து இறைவனிடம் வேண்டினார்கள்; தங்கள் கைகளை அவ்விருவர்மீது வைத்துத் திருப்பணியிலமர்த்தி அவர்களை அனுப்பி வைத்தார்கள்.

இவ்வாறு தூய ஆவியாரால் அனுப்பப்பட்டவர்கள் செலூக்கியாவுக்குச் சென்றார்கள்; அங்கிருந்து சைப்பிரசுக்குக் கப்பலேறினார்கள். அவர்கள் சாலமி நகருக்கு வந்து அங்குள்ள யூதரின் தொழுகைக் கூடங்களில் கடவுளின் வார்த்தையை அறிவித்தார்கள்; யோவானைத் தங்கள் உதவியாளராகக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.

"I, who am the light, have come into the world" 

A Reading From The Holy Gospel According To John (12, 44-50) 

At that time Jesus cried out: “Whoever believes in me, he does not believe in me, but in him who sent me; and he who sees me sees him who sent me. I, who am the light, have come into the world so that whoever believes in me will not remain in darkness. If anyone hears my words and does not stay true to them, I do not judge him, for I did not come to judge the world, but to save it. Whoever rejects me and does not accept my words will have the word that I have spoken to judge him: it is this who will judge him at the last day. Because it was not on my own initiative that I spoke: the Father himself, who sent me, gave me his command on what I must say and declare; and I know his command is eternal life. So what I declare, I declare as the Father told me. "

"Set aside Barnabas and Saul for me" 

A Reading from the book of Acts of the Apostles (12, 24 - 13, 5) 

In those days, the word of God was fruitful and multiplied. Barnabas and Saul, having completed their service for Jerusalem, returned to Antioch, taking with them John nicknamed Mark. Now there were in the Church which was in Antioch prophets and men charged with teaching: Barnabas, Simeon called Le Noir, Lucius of Cyrene, Manahene, childhood companion of Herod the Tetrarch, and Saul. One day as they were celebrating the worship of the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said to them: “Set apart Barnabas and Saul for me in view of the work to which I have called them. So after they fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they let them go. They therefore, sent by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and from there embarked for Cyprus; arrived in Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. They had Jean-Marc as an auxiliary.
