The sacrifice of our patriarch Abraham 

A Reading from the book of Genesis (22, 1-19) 

In those days God put Abraham to the test. He said to him: “Abraham! The latter replied: "Here I am! God said: "Take your son, your only son, the one you love, Isaac, go to the land of Moriah, and there you will offer him as a burnt offering on the mountain that I will show you. Abraham got up early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. He split the wood for the burnt offering, and set out for the place God had indicated to him. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place from afar. Abraham said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey. Me and the boy, we'll go over there to worship, and then we'll come back to you. Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and loaded it on his son Isaac; he took the fire and the knife, and they both went away together. Isaac said to his father Abraham: “My father! - Well, my son? Isaac continued, "There is the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?" Abraham replied, "God will find the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." And they both went away together. They come to the place that God had indicated. Abraham built the altar there and laid out the wood; then he bound his son Isaac and put him on the altar over the wood. Abraham stretched out his hand and grabbed the knife to sacrifice his son. But the angel of the Lord called him from on high and said: “Abraham! Abraham! He replied: "Here I am! "The angel said to him:" Do not lay your hand on the boy! Don't hurt her! I know now that you fear God: you did not refuse me your son, your only one. Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by the horns in a bush. He went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering instead of his son. Abraham gave this place the name of "The Lord Sees." It is called today: “On-the-mountain-the-Lord-is-seen. From heaven, the angel of the Lord called Abraham a second time. He declared: "I swear it by myself, oracle of the Lord: because you have done this, because you have not refused me your son, your only one, I will fill you with blessings, I will make your descendants so numerous. as the stars of the sky and the sand by the seashore, and your descendants shall occupy the strongholds of their enemies. Since you have listened to my voice, all the nations of the earth will address the blessing to one another by the name of your offspring. So Abraham returned to his servants and together they set out for Bersheba; and Abraham dwelt there.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு கலிலேயாவின் மறு கரையை அடைந்து கதரேனர் வாழ்ந்த பகுதிக்கு வந்தபோது, பேய் பிடித்த இருவர் கல்லறைகளிலிருந்து வெளியேறி அவருக்கு எதிரே வந்துகொண்டிருந்தனர். அவ்வழியே யாரும் போகமுடியாத அளவுக்கு அவர்கள் மிகவும் கொடியவர்களாய் இருந்தார்கள். அவர்கள், “இறைமகனே, உமக்கு இங்கு என்ன வேலை? குறித்த காலம் வருமுன்னே எங்களை வதைக்கவா இங்கே வந்தீர்?” என்று கத்தினார்கள்.

அவர்களிடமிருந்து சற்றுத் தொலையில் பன்றிகள் பெருங்கூட்டமாய் மேய்ந்துகொண்டிருந்தன. பேய்கள் அவரிடம், “நீர் எங்களை ஓட்டுவதாயிருந்தால் அப்பன்றிக் கூட்டத்திற்குள் எங்களை அனுப்பும்” என்று வேண்டின. அவர் அவற்றிடம், “போங்கள்” என்றார். அவை வெளியேறிப் பன்றிகளுக்குள் புகுந்தன. உடனே அக்கூட்டம் முழுவதும் செங்குத்துப் பாறையிலிருந்து கடலில் பாய்ந்து நீரில் வீழ்ந்து மடிந்தது.

பன்றிகளை மேய்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்தவர்கள் ஓடிப்போனார்கள். அவர்கள் நகருக்குள் சென்று, பேய் பிடித்தவர்களைப் பற்றிய செய்தியையும், நடந்த அனைத்தையுமே அறிவித்தார்கள். உடனே நகரினர் அனைவரும் இயேசுவுக்கு எதிர் கொண்டு வந்து, அவரைக் கண்டு, தங்கள் பகுதியை விட்டு அகலுமாறு வேண்டிக்கொண்டனர்.

பணிப்பெண்ணின் மகன், என் மகன் ஈசாக்குடன் பங்காளியாய் இருக்கக்கூடாது.

தொடக்க நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் 21: 5, 8-20

ஆபிரகாமுக்கு ஈசாக்கு பிறந்தபொழுது அவருடைய வயதோ நூறு. அந்தக் குழந்தை வளர்ந்து பால் குடியும் மறந்தது. அப்படிப் பால் குடிப்பதை நிறுத்திய நாளன்று ஆபிரகாம் பெரியதொரு விருந்து அளித்தார்.

பின்னர் எகிப்தியளான ஆகார் ஆபிரகாமுக்குப் பெற்றெடுத்த மகன் சிரித்து விளையாடுவதைச் சாரா கண்டு, ஆபிரகாமை நோக்கி, “இந்தப் பணிப் பெண்ணையும் அவள் மகனையும் துரத்திவிடும். ஏனென்றால், பணிப் பெண்ணின் மகன் என் மகன் ஈசாக்குடன் பங்காளியாய் இருக்கக்கூடாது” என்றார். தம் மகனுக்கு எதிரான இவ்வார்த்தை ஆபிரகாமுக்கு மிகுந்த வேதனை அளித்தது.

அப்போது கடவுள் ஆபிரகாமை நோக்கி, “பையனையும் பணிப் பெண்ணையும் குறித்து வேதனைப்படாதே. சாரா உனக்குச் சொல்வதை எல்லாம் அப்படியே செய். ஏனெனில் ஈசாக்கின் மூலமே உன் வழி மரபு விளங்கும். உன் பணிப் பெண்ணின் மகனும் உன் வித்தாய் இருப்பதால், அவனிடமிருந்தும் இனம் ஒன்று தோன்றச் செய்வேன்” என்றார்.

எனவே ஆபிரகாம் காலையில் எழுந்து, அப்பத்தையும், தோற்பை நிறையத் தண்ணீரையும் எடுத்து ஆகாரிடம் கொடுத்தார்; அவற்றை அவள் தோள்மேல் வைத்து குழந்தையையும் அவளுடன் அனுப்பி வைத்தார். அவளும் புறப்பட்டுப் போய் பெயேர்செபா என்னும் பாலை நிலத்தில் அலைந்து திரிந்தாள். தோற்பையிலிருந்த தண்ணீர் தீர்ந்தபின் அவள் புதர் ஒன்றின் அடியில் குழந்தையைக் கிடத்தினாள். பின்பு அவள் முன்புறம் சென்று அம்புஎறி தூரத்தளவில் உட்கார்ந்து கொண்டாள். ‘குழந்தை சாவதைப் பார்க்கச் சகியேன்’ என்று கூறி, முன்புறமிருந்து கொண்டே கூக்குரலிட்டு அழுதாள்.

அப்போது கடவுள் பையனின் அழுகுரலைக் கேட்டார். ஆண்டவரின் தூதர் வானத்தினின்று ஆகாரைக் கூப்பிட்டு, “ஆகார்! உனக்கு நிகழ்ந்தது என்ன? அஞ்சாதே. ஏனெனில், கிடத்தியிருக்கிற இடத்தினின்று பையனின் அழுகுரலை கடவுள் கேட்டருளினார். நீ எழுந்து பையனைத் தூக்கி விடு. அவனை உன் கையில் பிடித்துக்கொள். ஏனெனில், அவனிடமிருந்து பெரிய இனம் ஒன்று தோன்றச் செய்வேன்” என்றார்.

அப்பொழுது கடவுள் அவள் கண்களைத் திறந்துவிட, அவள் நீருள்ள கிணற்றைக் கண்டாள். அவள் அங்குச் சென்று தோற்பையை நீரால் நிரப்பிப் பையனுக்குக் குடிக்கக் கொடுத்தாள். கடவுளும் பையனோடு இருந்தார். அவன் வளர்ந்து பாலை நிலத்தில் குடியிருந்தான். அம்பு எய்வதில் வல்லவன் ஆனான்.

A Reading From The Holy Gospel According To Matthew (8, 28-34) 

At that time, as Jesus arrived on the other side, in the land of the Gadarenes, two possessed people came out of the graves to meet him; they were so aggressive that no one could go that way. And now they began to cry: "What do you want with us, Son of God?" Have you come to torment us before the appointed time? Now there was a large herd of pigs far away looking for food. The demons begged Jesus: "If you drive us out, send us to the herd of pigs." He answered them: "Go on. They went out and they went into the pigs; and behold, from the top of the cliff, the whole herd rushed into the sea, and the pigs died in the waves. The guards fled and went into the city to report all this, and in particular what had happened to the possessed. And now the whole city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, the people begged him to leave their territory.

"The son of this maid must not share the inheritance of my son Isaac" 

A Reading from the book of Genesis (21, 5.8-20) 

Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born. The child grew, and he was weaned. Abraham gave a great feast on the day Isaac was weaned. Now Sarah was watching Ishmael having fun, that son Abraham had from Hagar the Egyptian. She said to Abraham, “Cast out this maid and her son; for the son of this handmaid must not share the inheritance of my son Isaac. This word saddened Abraham greatly, on account of his son Ishmael, but God said to him: "Do not be sad on account of the boy and of your maidservant; hear whatever Sarah tells you, for it is through Isaac that your descendants will bear your name; but the son of the handmaid also will I make a nation, for he also is of thy seed. "

Abraham got up early in the morning, took bread and a skin of water, put them on Hagar's shoulder, gave the child to her, then sent her away. She left and went to wander in the desert of Bersheba. When the water in the skin was used up, she left the child under a bush, and went to sit not far away, within an arrow's reach. She said to herself: "I don't want to see the child die!" She sat down nearby. She raised her voice and cried. God heard the voice of the little boy; and from heaven the angel of God called to Hagar, "What is the matter with you, Hagar?"
