'Jar of meal shall not be spent, jug of oil shall not be emptied'

1 Kings 17:10-16 

Elijah the Prophet went off to Sidon. And when he reached the city gate, there was a widow gathering sticks; addressing her he said, ‘Please bring me a little water in a vessel for me to drink.’ She was setting off to bring it when he called after her. ‘Please’ he said ‘bring me a scrap of bread in your hand.’ ‘As the Lord your God lives,’ she replied ‘I have no baked bread, but only a handful of meal in a jar and a little oil in a jug; I am just gathering a stick or two to go and prepare this for myself and my son to eat, and then we shall die.’ But Elijah said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, go and do as you have said; but first make a little scone of it for me and bring it to me, and then make some for yourself and for your son. For thus the Lord speaks, the God of Israel:

“Jar of meal shall not be spent,

jug of oil shall not be emptied,

before the day when the Lord sends

rain on the face of the earth.”’

The woman went and did as Elijah told her and they ate the food, she, himself and her son. The jar of meal was not spent nor the jug of oil emptied, just as the Lord had foretold through Elijah.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தம் சீடர்களுக்குக் கூறியது: “நான் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்: நேர்மையற்ற செல்வத்தைக் கொண்டு உங்களுக்கு நண்பர்களைத் தேடிக்கொள்ளுங்கள். அது தீரும்பொழுது அவர்கள் உங்களை நிலையான உறைவிடங்களில் ஏற்றுக்கொள்வார்கள். மிகச் சிறியவற்றில் நம்பத் தகுந்தவர் பெரியவற்றிலும் நம்பத் தகுந்தவராய் இருப்பார். மிகச் சிறியவற்றில் நேர்மையற்றவர் பெரியவற்றிலும் நேர்மையற்றவராய் இருப்பார். நேர்மையற்ற செல்வத்தைக் கையாளுவதில் நீங்கள் நம்பத்தகாதவராய் இருந்தால் யார் உங்களை நம்பி உண்மைச் செல்வத்தை ஒப்படைப்பார்? பிறருக்கு உரியவற்றைக் கையாளுவதில் நீங்கள் நம்பத்தகாதவர்களாய்ப் போனால் உங்களுக்கு உரியவற்றை உங்களுக்குக் கொடுப்பவர் யார்?

எந்த வீட்டு வேலையாளும் இரு தலைவர்களுக்குப் பணிவிடை செய்ய முடியாது; ஏனெனில், ஒருவரை வெறுத்து மற்றவரிடம் அவர் அன்பு கொள்வார்; அல்லது ஒருவரைச் சார்ந்துகொண்டு மற்றவரைப் புறக்கணிப்பார். நீங்கள் கடவுளுக்கும் செல்வத்துக்கும் பணிவிடை செய்ய முடியாது."

பண ஆசைமிக்க பரிசேயர் இவற்றையெல்லாம் கேட்டு இயேசுவை ஏளனம் செய்தனர். அவர் அவர்களிடம் கூறியது: “நீங்கள் உங்களை மக்கள்முன் நேர்மையாளராகக் காட்டிக்கொள்கிறீர்கள். கடவுள் உங்கள் உள்ளங்களை அறிவார். நீங்கள் உங்களை மக்கள்முன் உயர்ந்தவர்களாகக் காட்டிக்கொள்வது கடவுள் பார்வையில் அருவருப்பாகும்.”

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

கிறிஸ்து இயேசுவுக்காக என்னோடு சேர்ந்து உழைக்கின்ற பிரிஸ்காவுக்கும் அக்கிலாவுக்கும் என் வாழ்த்து. அவர்கள் என் உயிரைக் காக்கத் தலைகொடுக்கவும் முன்வந்தார்கள். அவர்களுக்கு நான் நன்றி செலுத்தக் கடமைப்பட்டிருக்கிறேன். நான் மட்டும் அல்ல, பிற இனத்துத் திருச்சபைகள் அனைத்துமே நன்றி செலுத்தக் கடமைப்பட்டிருக்கின்றன. அவர்கள் வீட்டில் கூடும் திருச்சபைக்கும் வாழ்த்துச் சொல்லுங்கள்.

என் அன்பார்ந்த எப்பைனத்துக்கும் வாழ்த்துக் கூறுங்கள். ஆசியாவில் கிறிஸ்துவை முதன்முதல் ஏற்றுக்கொண்டவர் இவரே. உங்களுக்காக பாடுபட்டு உழைத்த மரியாவுக்கு வாழ்த்துத் தெரிவியுங்கள். என் உறவினர்களும் உடன் கைதிகளுமான அந்திரோனிக்கு, யூனியா ஆகியவர்களுக்கும் என் வாழ்த்துகள்; திருத்தூதர்களுள் இவர்கள் பெயர் பெற்றவர்கள்; இவர்கள் எனக்குமுன் கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் ஆனார்கள். ஆண்டவருக்கு உரியவரான என் அன்பார்ந்த அம்பிலியாத்துக்கு வாழ்த்துகள். கிறிஸ்துவுக்காக உழைக்கும் என் உடன் உழைப்பாளரான உர்பானுக்கும் என் அன்பார்ந்த ஸ்தாக்கிக்கும் வாழ்த்துச் சொல்லுங்கள்.

தூய முத்தம் கொடுத்து ஒருவர் மற்றவரை வாழ்த்துங்கள். கிறிஸ்துவின் எல்லாச் சபைகளும் உங்களுக்கு வாழ்த்துக் கூறுகின்றன.

இந்தத் திருமுகத்தை எழுதிக் கொடுத்த தெர்த்தியுவாகிய நான் ஆண்டவருக்கு உரியவன் என்னும் முறையில் உங்களுக்கு வாழ்த்துக் கூறுகிறேன். நான் தங்குவதற்கும் சபையினர் அனைவரும் ஒன்று கூடுவதற்கும் தம் வீட்டில் இடமளிக்கிற காயு உங்களுக்கு வாழ்த்துச் சொல்கிறார். நகரத்தின் பொருளாளரான எரஸ்தும் நம் சகோதரனாகிய குவர்த்தும் உங்களுக்கு வாழ்த்துக் கூறுகிறார்கள்.

இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவைப் பற்றி நான் பறைசாற்றும் நற்செய்திக்கு ஏற்ப வாழக் கடவுள் உங்களை உறுதிப்படுத்த வல்லவர். ஊழி காலமாக மறைபொருளாக இருந்த இந்த நற்செய்தி இப்பொழுது வெளிப்படுத்தப் பட்டுள்ளது. இறைவாக்கினர் வாயிலாக இது நமக்குத் தெளிவாகியுள்ளது. என்றும் வாழும் கடவுளின் கட்டளைப்படி எல்லா மக்களினங்களுக்கும் அது தெரியவந்துள்ளது. இதனால் அவர்கள் நற்செய்தியைக் கேட்டு நம்பிக்கை கொள்வர். ஞானமே உருவாகிய கடவுள் ஒருவருக்கே இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் வழியாய் என்றென்றும் மாட்சி உரித்தாகுக! ஆமென்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke 16: 9-15. 

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘I tell you this: use money, tainted as it is, to win you friends, and thus make sure that when it fails you, they will welcome you into the tents of eternity. The man who can be trusted in little things can be trusted in great; the man who is dishonest in little things will be dishonest in great. If then you cannot be trusted with money, that tainted thing, who will trust you with genuine riches? And if you cannot be trusted with what is not yours, who will give you what is your very own?

  ‘No servant can be the slave of two masters: he will either hate the first and love the second, or treat the first with respect and the second with scorn. You cannot be the slave both of God and of money.’

  The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and laughed at him. He said to them, ‘You are the very ones who pass yourselves off as virtuous in people’s sight, but God knows your hearts. For what is thought highly of by men is loathsome in the sight of God.’

The mystery kept secret for endless ages must be broadcast everywhere

A Reading from the Letter of St.Paul to the Romans 16: 3-9, 16, 22-27. 

My greetings to Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who risked death to save my life: I am not the only one to owe them a debt of gratitude, all the churches among the pagans do as well. My greetings also to the church that meets at their house.

  Greetings to my friend Epaenetus, the first of Asia’s gifts to Christ; greetings to Mary who worked so hard for you; to those outstanding apostles Andronicus and Junias, my compatriots and fellow prisoners who became Christians before me; to Ampliatus, my friend in the Lord; to Urban, my fellow worker in Christ; to my friend Stachys. Greet each other with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ send greetings.

  I, Tertius, who wrote out this letter, greet you in the Lord. Greetings from Gaius, who is entertaining me and from the whole church that meets in his house. Erastus, the city treasurer, sends his greetings; so does our brother Quartus.

  Glory to him who is able to give you the strength to live according to the Good News I preach, and in which I proclaim Jesus Christ, the revelation of a mystery kept secret for endless ages, but now so clear that it must be broadcast to pagans everywhere to bring them to the obedience of faith. This is only what scripture has predicted, and it is all part of the way the eternal God wants things to be. He alone is wisdom; give glory therefore to him through Jesus Christ for ever and ever. Amen.
