They elected seven men full of the Holy Spirit

A Reading from the Acts of Apostles  6:1-7 

About this time, when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenists made a complaint against the Hebrews: in the daily distribution their own widows were being overlooked. So the Twelve called a full meeting of the disciples and addressed them, ‘It would not be right for us to neglect the word of God so as to give out food; you, brothers, must select from among yourselves seven men of good reputation, filled with the Spirit and with wisdom; we will hand over this duty to them, and continue to devote ourselves to prayer and to the service of the word.’ The whole assembly approved of this proposal and elected Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, together with Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolaus of Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.

  The word of the Lord continued to spread: the number of disciples in Jerusalem was greatly increased, and a large group of priests made their submission to the faith.

இயேசு தம் சீடரை நோக்கி: “நீங்கள் என்னை அறிந்திருந்தால் என் தந்தையையும் அறிந்திருப்பீர்கள். இது முதல் நீங்கள் தந்தையை அறிந்திருக்கிறீர்கள். அவரைக் கண்டுமிருக்கிறீர்கள்” என்றார்.

அப்போது பிலிப்பு அவரிடம், “ஆண்டவரே, தந்தையை எங்களுக்குக் காட்டும்; அதுவே போதும்” என்றார். இயேசு அவரிடம் கூறியது: “பிலிப்பே, இவ்வளவு காலம் நான் உங்களோடு இருந்தும் நீ என்னை அறிந்துகொள்ளவில்லையா? என்னைக் காண்பது தந்தையைக் காண்பது ஆகும். அப்படியிருக்க, ‘தந்தையை எங்களுக்குக் காட்டும்’ என்று நீ எப்படிக் கேட்கலாம்? நான் தந்தையினுள்ளும் தந்தை என்னுள்ளும் இருப்பதை நீ நம்புவதில்லையா? நான் உங்களுக்குக் கூறியவற்றை நானாகக் கூறவில்லை. என்னுள் இருந்துகொண்டு செயலாற்றுபவர் தந்தையே. நான் தந்தையுள் இருக்கிறேன்; தந்தை என்னுள் இருக்கிறார். நான் சொல்வதை நம்புங்கள்; என் வார்த்தையின் பொருட்டு நம்பாவிட்டால், என் செயல்களின் பொருட்டாவது நம்புங்கள்.

அடுத்து வந்த ஓய்வுநாளில் ஆண்டவரின் வார்த்தையைக் கேட்க ஏறக்குறைய நகரத்தார் அனைவரும் கூடிவந்தனர். மக்கள் திரளைக் கண்ட யூதர்கள் பொறாமையால் நிறைந்து, பவுல் கூறியதை எதிர்த்துப் பேசி அவரைப் பழித்துரைத்தார்கள்.

பவுலும் பர்னபாவும் துணிவுடன், “கடவுளின் வார்த்தையை உங்களுக்குத்தான் முதலில் அறிவிக்க வேண்டியிருந்தது. ஆனால் நீங்கள் அதனை உதறித் தள்ளி நிலைவாழ்வுக்குத் தகுதியற்றவர்கள் என்று உங்களுக்கு நீங்களே தீர்ப்பளித்துக் கொண்டீர்கள். எனவே நாங்கள் பிற இனத்தாரிடம் செல்கிறோம். ஏனென்றால், ‘உலகம் முழுவதும் என் மீட்பை அடைவதற்கு நான் உன்னை வேற்றினத்தார்க்கு ஒளியாக ஏற்படுத்துவேன்’ என்று ஆண்டவர் எங்களுக்குக் கட்டளையிட்டுள்ளார்” என்று எடுத்துக் கூறினார்கள்.

இதைக் கேட்ட பிற இனத்தார் மகிழ்ச்சியடைந்தனர்; ஆண்டவரின் வார்த்தையைப் போற்றிப் புகழ்ந்தனர். நிலைவாழ்வுக்காகக் குறிக்கப்பட் டோர் அனைவரும் நம்பிக்கை கொண்டனர். அப்பகுதியெங்கும் ஆண்டவரின் வார்த்தை பரவியது. ஆனால் யூதர்கள் கடவுளை வழிபட்டு வந்த மதிப்புக்குரிய பெண்களையும் நகரின் முதன்மைக் குடிமக்களையும் தூண்டிவிட்டு, பவுலையும் பர்னபாவையும் இன்னலுக்குள்ளாக்கி, அவர்களைத் தங்களது நாட்டிலிருந்து துரத்திவிட்டார்கள். அவர்கள் தங்கள் கால்களில் படிந்திருந்த தூசியை அவர்களுக்கு எதிராக உதறிவிட்டு இக்கோனியாவுக்குச் சென்றார்கள். சீடர்களோ தூய ஆவியால் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டு மகிழ்ச்சியில் திளைத்திருந்தார்கள்.

To have seen me is to have seen the father

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 14:7-14 

Jesus said to his disciples:

‘If you know me, you know my Father too.

From this moment you know him and have seen him.’

Philip said, ‘Lord, let us see the Father and then we shall be satisfied.’

  ‘Have I been with you all this time, Philip,’ said Jesus to him, ‘and you still do not know me?

‘To have seen me is to have seen the Father,

so how can you say, “Let us see the Father”?

Do you not believe

that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?

The words I say to you I do not speak as from myself:

it is the Father, living in me, who is doing this work.

You must believe me when I say

that I am in the Father and the Father is in me;

believe it on the evidence of this work, if for no other reason.

I tell you most solemnly,

whoever believes in me

will perform the same works as I do myself,

he will perform even greater works,

because I am going to the Father.

Whatever you ask for in my name I will do,

so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

If you ask for anything in my name,

I will do it.’

Since you have rejected the word of God, we must turn to the pagans

A Reading from the Acts of Apostles 13:44-52 

The next sabbath almost the whole town assembled to hear the word of God. When they saw the crowds, the Jews, prompted by jealousy, used blasphemies and contradicted everything Paul said. Then Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly. ‘We had to proclaim the word of God to you first, but since you have rejected it, since you do not think yourselves worthy of eternal life, we must turn to the pagans. For this is what the Lord commanded us to do when he said:

I have made you a light for the nations,

so that my salvation may reach the ends of the earth.’

It made the pagans very happy to hear this and they thanked the Lord for his message; all who were destined for eternal life became believers. Thus the word of the Lord spread through the whole countryside.

  But the Jews worked upon some of the devout women of the upper classes and the leading men of the city and persuaded them to turn against Paul and Barnabas and expel them from their territory. So they shook the dust from their feet in defiance and went off to Iconium; but the disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.
