அமைதியை ஏற்படுத்த வந்தேன் என்றா நினைக்கிறீர்கள்? இல்லை, பிளவு உண்டாக்கவே வந்தேன்.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தம் சீடரை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: “மண்ணுலகில் தீமூட்ட வந்தேன். அது இப்பொழுதே பற்றி எரிந்து கொண்டிருக்க வேண்டும் என்பதே என் விருப்பம். ஆயினும் நான் பெறவேண்டிய ஒரு திருமுழுக்கு உண்டு. அது நிறைவேறுமளவும் நான் மிகவும் மன நெருக்கடிக்கு உள்ளாகி இருக்கிறேன்.

மண்ணுலகில் அமைதியை ஏற்படுத்த வந்தேன் என்றா நினைக்கிறீர்கள்? இல்லை, பிளவு உண்டாக்கவே வந்தேன் என உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன். இதுமுதல் ஒரு வீட்டிலுள்ள ஐவருள் இருவருக்கு எதிராக மூவரும் மூவருக்கு எதிராக இருவரும் பிரிந்திருப்பர். தந்தை மகனுக்கும், மகன் தந்தைக்கும், தாய் மகளுக்கும், மகள் தாய்க்கும், மாமியார் தன் மருமகளுக்கும், மருமகள் மாமியாருக்கும் எதிராகப் பிரிந்திருப்பர்.”

நீங்கள் பாவத்தினின்று விடுதலை பெற்றுக் கடவுளுக்கு அடிமைகள் ஆகிவிட்டீர்கள்.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

நீங்கள் வலுவற்றவர்கள் என்பதை மனதிற்கொண்டு எளிய முறையில் பேசுகிறேன். முன்பு கட்டுப்பாடற்ற வாழ்வுக்கு வழிவகுக்கும் கெட்ட நடத்தைக்கும் நெறிகேட்டிற்கும் உங்கள் உறுப்புகளை நீங்கள் அடிமையாக்கியிருந்தீர்கள். அதுபோல இப்பொழுது தூய வாழ்வுக்கு வழிவகுக்கும் ஏற்புடைய செயல்களுக்கு உங்கள் உறுப்புகளை அடிமையாக்குங்கள்.

நீங்கள் பாவத்திற்கு அடிமைகளாய் இருந்தபோது கடவுளுக்கு ஏற்புடையவற்றைச் செய்யக் கடமைப்பட்டிருக்கவில்லை. அப்போது நீங்கள் செய்த செயல்களை எண்ணி இப்போது நீங்களே வெட்கப் படுகிறீர்கள். அவற்றால் நீங்கள் கண்ட பயன் யாது? அவற்றின் முடிவு சாவு அல்லவா?

ஆனால் இப்பொழுது, நீங்கள் பாவத்தினின்று விடுதலை பெற்றுக் கடவுளுக்கு அடிமைகள் ஆகிவிட்டீர்கள்; இதனால் நீங்கள் காணும் பயன் தூய வாழ்வு. இதன் முடிவு நிலைவாழ்வு. பாவத்துக்குக் கிடைக்கும் கூலி சாவு; மாறாகக் கடவுள் கொடுக்கும் அருள்கொடை நம் ஆண்டவர் கிறிஸ்து இயேசுவோடு இணைந்து வாழும் நிலைவாழ்வு.

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘I have come to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were blazing already! There is a baptism I must still receive, and how great is my distress till it is over!

  ‘Do you suppose that I am here to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. For from now on a household of five will be divided: three against two and two against three; the father divided against the son, son against father, mother against daughter, daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law, daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.’

Now you are set free from sin, and slaves to God

A reading from the letter of St.Paul to the Romans 6:19-23 

If I may use human terms to help your natural weakness: as once you put your bodies at the service of vice and immorality, so now you must put them at the service of righteousness for your sanctification.

  When you were slaves of sin, you felt no obligation to righteousness, and what did you get from this? Nothing but experiences that now make you blush, since that sort of behaviour ends in death. Now, however, you have been set free from sin, you have been made slaves of God, and you get a reward leading to your sanctification and ending in eternal life. For the wage paid by sin is death; the present given by God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 12:39-48

Jesus said to his disciples:

  ‘You may be quite sure of this, that if the householder had known at what hour the burglar would come, he would not have let anyone break through the wall of his house. You too must stand ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.’

  Peter said, ‘Lord, do you mean this parable for us, or for everyone?’ The Lord replied, ‘What sort of steward, then, is faithful and wise enough for the master to place him over his household to give them their allowance of food at the proper time? Happy that servant if his master’s arrival finds him at this employment. I tell you truly, he will place him over everything he owns. But as for the servant who says to himself, “My master is taking his time coming,” and sets about beating the menservants and the maids, and eating and drinking and getting drunk, his master will come on a day he does not expect and at an hour he does not know. The master will cut him off and send him to the same fate as the unfaithful.

  The servant who knows what his master wants, but has not even started to carry out those wishes, will receive very many strokes of the lash. The one who did not know, but deserves to be beaten for what he has done, will receive fewer strokes. When a man has had a great deal given him, a great deal will be demanded of him; when a man has had a great deal given him on trust, even more will be expected of him.’
