We are waiting for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed

A reading from the first letter of St.Paul to the Corinthians 1:3-9 

May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ send you grace and peace.

  I never stop thanking God for all the graces you have received through Jesus Christ. I thank him that you have been enriched in so many ways, especially in your teachers and preachers; the witness to Christ has indeed been strong among you so that you will not be without any of the gifts of the Spirit while you are waiting for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed; and he will keep you steady and without blame until the last day, the day of our Lord Jesus Christ, because God by calling you has joined you to his Son, Jesus Christ; and God is faithful.

O that you would tear the heavens open and come down

A reading from the book of Isaiah 63: 16-17,64:1,3-8

You, Lord, yourself are our Father,

‘Our Redeemer’ is your ancient name.

Why, Lord, leave us to stray from your ways

and harden our hearts against fearing you?

Return, for the sake of your servants,

the tribes of your inheritance.

Oh, that you would tear the heavens open and come down!

– at your Presence the mountains would melt.

No ear has heard,

no eye has seen

any god but you act like this

for those who trust him.

You guide those who act with integrity

and keep your ways in mind.

You were angry when we were sinners;

we had long been rebels against you.

We were all like men unclean,

all that integrity of ours like filthy clothing.

We have all withered like leaves

and our sins blew us away like the wind.

No one invoked your name

or roused himself to catch hold of you.

For you hid your face from us

and gave us up to the power of our sins.

தானியேல் ஆகிய நான் உள்ளம் கலங்கினேன். மனக்கண்முன் தோன்றிய காட்சிகள் என்னை அச்சுறுத்தின. அங்கு நின்றுகொண்டிருந்தவர்களுள் ஒருவரை அணுகி, ‘இவற்றிற்கெல்லாம் பொருள் என்ன?’ என்று கேட்டேன். அவர் அவற்றின் உட்பொருளை எல்லாம் எனக்கு விளக்கிக் கூறினார். இந்த நான்கு விலங்குகளும் உலகில் எழும்பப்போகும் நான்கு அரசர்களைக் குறிக்கின்றன. ஆனால் உன்னதரின் புனிதர்கள் அரசுரிமை பெறுவர்; அந்த அரசுரிமையை என்றும் ஊழிஊழிக்காலமும் கொண்டிருப்பர்.

அதன் பின்னர், மற்ற விலங்குகளினின்று மாறுபட்டு, மிகவும் அஞ்சி நடுங்கவைக்கும் தோற்றத்துடன், இரும்புப் பற்களும் வெண்கல நகங்களும் கொண்டு, அனைத்தையும் தூள் தூளாக நொறுக்கி விழுங்கி, எஞ்சியதைக் கால்களால் மிதித்துப்போட்ட அந்த நான்காம் விலங்கைப் பற்றி அறிந்துகொள்ள விரும்பினேன். அதன் தலையில் இருந்த பத்துக் கொம்புகளைப் பற்றியும், மூன்று கொம்புகள் தன் முன்னிலையில் விழுந்து போக அங்கே முளைத்த கண்களும் பெருமையாகப் பேசும் வாயும் கொண்டிருந்த ஏனையவற்றை விடப் பெரிதாகத் தோன்றிய அந்தக் கொம்பைப் பற்றியும் தெரிந்துகொள்ள விரும்பினேன். நான் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருக்கையில், அந்தக் கொம்பு புனிதர்களுக்கு எதிராகப் போர் புரிந்து அவர்களை வென்றது. தொன்மை வாய்ந்தவர் வந்து உன்னதரின் புனிதர்களுக்கு நீதி வழங்கும் வரையிலும் உரிய காலத்தில் புனிதர்கள் அரசுரிமை பெறும் வரையில் இவ்வாறு நடந்தது.

அவர் தொடர்ந்து பேசினார்; அந்த நான்காம் விலங்கோ உலகில் தோன்றப்போகும் நான்காம் அரசைக் குறிக்கின்றது; இது மற்றெல்லா அரசுகளையும் விட வேறுபட்டதாகும். உலக முழுவதையும் அது மிதித்துத் தூள்தூளாக நொறுக்கி விழுங்கிவிடும். அந்தப் பத்துக் கொம்புகளோ இந்த அரசினின்று தோன்ற இருக்கும் பத்து மன்னர்களைக் குறிக்கின்றன. அவர்களுக்குப் பிறகு மற்றொருவன் எழும்புவான்; முந்தினவர்களை விட வேறுபட்டிருப்பான்; மூன்று அரசர்களை முறியடிப்பான்; அவன் உன்னதர்க்கு எதிரான சொற்களைப் பேசுவான்; உன்னதரின் புனிதர்களைத் துன்புறுத்துவான்; வழிபாட்டுக் காலங்களையும் திருச்சட்டத்தையும் மாற்ற நினைப்பான். மூன்றரை ஆண்டுகள் புனிதர்கள் அவனது கையில் ஒப்புவிக்கப்படுவர். ஆனால், நீதிமன்றம் தீர்ப்பு வழங்க அமரும்; அவனது ஆட்சி அவனிடமிருந்து பறிக்கப்பட்டு, எரியுண்டு ஒன்றுமில்லாது அழிக்கப்படும். ஆட்சியும் அரசுரிமையும், வானத்தின் கீழுள்ள உலகனைத்திலும் உள்ள அரசுகளின் மேன்மையும் உன்னதரின் புனித மக்களுக்குத் தரப்படும். அவர்களது அரசு என்றென்றும் நிலைக்கும் அரசு; எல்லா அரசுகளும் அவர்களுக்குப் பணிந்து கீழ்ப்படியும்.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 21:34-36

Jesus said to his disciples:

  ‘Watch yourselves, or your hearts will be coarsened with debauchery and drunkenness and the cares of life, and that day will be sprung on you suddenly, like a trap. For it will come down on every living man on the face of the earth. Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to survive all that is going to happen, and to stand with confidence before the Son of Man.’
