Come to me and your soul will live, and I will make an everlasting covenant with you

A reading from the book of Isaiah 55:1-11 

Thus says the Lord:

Oh, come to the water all you who are thirsty;

though you have no money, come!

Buy corn without money, and eat,

and, at no cost, wine and milk.

Why spend money on what is not bread,

your wages on what fails to satisfy?

Listen, listen to me, and you will have good things to eat

and rich food to enjoy.

Pay attention, come to me;

listen, and your soul will live.

With you I will make an everlasting covenant

out of the favours promised to David.

See, I have made of you a witness to the peoples,

a leader and a master of the nations.

See, you will summon a nation you never knew,

those unknown will come hurrying to you,

for the sake of the Lord your God,

of the Holy One of Israel who will glorify you.

Seek the Lord while he is still to be found,

call to him while he is still near.

Let the wicked man abandon his way,

the evil man his thoughts.

Let him turn back to the Lord who will take pity on him,

to our God who is rich in forgiving;

for my thoughts are not your thoughts,

my ways not your ways – it is the Lord who speaks.

Yes, the heavens are as high above earth

as my ways are above your ways,

my thoughts above your thoughts.

Yes, as the rain and the snow come down from the heavens and do not return without watering the earth, making it yield and giving growth to provide seed for the sower and bread for the eating, so the word that goes from my mouth does not return to me empty, without carrying out my will and succeeding in what it was sent to do.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

உங்கள் நலனுக்காகக் கடவுளின் அருளால் எனக்கு அளிக்கப்பட்ட பொறுப்பைப் பற்றிக் கேள்விப்பட்டிருப்பீர்கள் என எண்ணுகிறேன். அந்த மறைபொருள் எனக்கு இறைவெளிப்பாட்டின் வழியாகவே தெரியப்படுத்தப்பட்டது.

அந்த மறைபொருள் மற்ற தலைமுறைகளில் வாழ்ந்த மக்களுக்குத் தெரிவிக்கப்படவில்லை. ஆனால், இப்போது தூய ஆவி வழியாகத் தூய திருத்தூதருக்கும் இறைவாக்கினருக்கும் வெளிப்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. நற்செய்தியின் வழியாக, பிற இனத்தாரும் கிறிஸ்து இயேசுவின் மூலம் உடன் உரிமையாளரும், ஒரே உடலின் உறுப்பினரும், வாக்குறுதியின் உடன் பங்காளிகளும் ஆகியிருக்கிறார்கள் என்பதே அம்மறைபொருள்.

ஏரோது அரசன் காலத்தில் யூதேயாவிலுள்ள பெத்லகேமில் இயேசு பிறந்தார். அப்போது கிழக்கிலிருந்து ஞானிகள் எருசலேமுக்கு வந்து, “யூதர்களின் அரசராகப் பிறந்திருக்கிறவர் எங்கே? அவரது விண்மீன் எழக் கண்டோம். அவரை வணங்க வந்திருக்கிறோம்” என்றார்கள்.

இதைக் கேட்டதும் ஏரோது அரசன் கலங்கினான். அவனோடு எருசலேம் முழுவதும் கலங்கிற்று. அவன் எல்லாத் தலைமைக் குருக்களையும், மக்களிடையே இருந்த மறைநூல் அறிஞர்களையும் ஒன்றுகூட்டி, மெசியா எங்கே பிறப்பார் என்று அவர்களிடம் விசாரித்தான். அவர்கள் அவனிடம், “யூதேயாவிலுள்ள பெத்லகேமில் அவர் பிறக்க வேண்டும். ஏனெனில், ‘யூதா நாட்டுப் பெத்லகேமே, யூதாவின் ஆட்சி மையங்களில் நீ சிறியதே இல்லை; ஏனெனில், என் மக்களாகிய இஸ்ரயேலை ஆயரென ஆள்பவர் ஒருவர் உன்னிலிருந்தே தோன்றுவார்’ என்று இறவாக்கினர் எழுதியுள்ளார்” என்றார்கள்.

பின்பு ஏரோது யாருக்கும் தெரியாமல் ஞானிகளை அழைத்துக் கொண்டுபோய் விண்மீன் தோன்றிய காலத்தைப் பற்றி விசாரித்து உறுதி செய்துகொண்டான். மேலும் அவர்களிடம், “நீங்கள் சென்று குழந்தையைக் குறித்துத் திட்டவட்டமாய்க் கேட்டு எனக்கு அறிவியுங்கள். அப்பொழுது நானும் சென்று அக்குழந்தையை வணங்குவேன்” என்று கூறி, அவர்களைப் பெத்லகேமுக்கு அனுப்பி வைத்தான். அரசன் சொன்னதைக் கேட்டு அவர்கள் புறப்பட்டுப் போனார்கள்.

இதோ! முன்பு எழுந்த விண்மீன் தோன்றி குழந்தை இருந்த இடத்திற்கு மேல் வந்து நிற்கும்வரை அவர்களுக்கு முன்னே சென்று கொண்டிருந்தது. அங்கே நின்ற விண்மீனைக் கண்டதும் அவர்கள் மட்டில்லாப் பெருமகிழ்ச்சி அடைந்தார்கள். வீட்டிற்குள் அவர்கள் போய்க் குழந்தையை அதன் தாய் மரியா வைத்திருப்பதைக் கண்டார்கள்; நெடுஞ்சாண்கிடையாய் விழுந்து குழந்தையை வணங்கினார்கள்; தங்கள் பேழைகளைத் திறந்து, பொன்னும் சாம்பிராணியும் வெள்ளைப் போளமும் காணிக்கையாகக் கொடுத்தார்கள். ஏரோதிடம் திரும்பிப் போக வேண்டாம் என்று கனவில் அவர்கள் எச்சரிக்கப்பட்டதால் வேறு வழியாகத் தங்கள் நாடு திரும்பினார்கள்.

எருசலேமே! எழு! ஒளிவீசு! உன் ஒளி தோன்றியுள்ளது. ஆண்டவரின் மாட்சி உன்மேல் உதித்துள்ளது! இதோ! இருள் பூவுலகை மூடும்; காரிருள் மக்களினங்களைக் கவ்வும்; ஆண்டவரோ உன்மீது எழுந்தருள்வார்; அவரது மாட்சி உன்மீது தோன்றும்!

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 2:1-12

After Jesus had been born at Bethlehem in Judaea during the reign of King Herod, some wise men came to Jerusalem from the east. ‘Where is the infant king of the Jews?’ they asked. ‘We saw his star as it rose and have come to do him homage.’ When King Herod heard this he was perturbed, and so was the whole of Jerusalem. He called together all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, and enquired of them where the Christ was to be born. ‘At Bethlehem in Judaea,’ they told him ‘for this is what the prophet wrote:

And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,

you are by no means least among the leaders of Judah,

for out of you will come a leader

who will shepherd my people Israel.’

Then Herod summoned the wise men to see him privately. He asked them the exact date on which the star had appeared, and sent them on to Bethlehem. ‘Go and find out all about the child,’ he said ‘and when you have found him, let me know, so that I too may go and do him homage.’ Having listened to what the king had to say, they set out. And there in front of them was the star they had seen rising; it went forward, and halted over the place where the child was. The sight of the star filled them with delight, and going into the house they saw the child with his mother Mary, and falling to their knees they did him homage. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh. But they were warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, and returned to their own country by a different way.

It has now been revealed that pagans share the same inheritance

Ephesians 3:2-3,5-6 

You have probably heard how I have been entrusted by God with the grace he meant for you, and that it was by a revelation that I was given the knowledge of the mystery. This mystery that has now been revealed through the Spirit to his holy apostles and prophets was unknown to any men in past generations; it means that pagans now share the same inheritance, that they are parts of the same body, and that the same promise has been made to them, in Jesus Christ, through the gospel.
